The Fluvannia Hockey Federation is pleased to welcome the participating teams of the 15th World Junior Hockey Tournament to Fluvannia! The WJHC serves as the first opportunity the legendary skaters of tomorrow have to represent their respective homelands, and we at the FHF are pleased to welcome these Under-20 stars to the Federated Principality to showcase their talent.

This thread will serve as the location for all rosters, roleplay posts, and game results. Any OOC discussion is requested to take place in either the OOC (formerly signups) thread or the International Hockey Discussion Thread. Questions may also be directed to Fluvannia via either in-game TG or Discord.

Tournament Format
During the group stage of play, each win will be worth two points, each draw/tie one point, and each loss zero. Games will be played with a 3-on-3, five-minute sudden-death overtime period, after which if no team has scored the game ends in a tie. The top four teams from each group will advance to the Round of 16, where group winners will be seeds 1-4, second-place teams will be seeds 5-8, etc.

Ties in each group's points standings will be broken using the following criteria, in this order: head-to-head points; goal differential; head-to-head goal differential; goals scored; head-to-head goals scored. These tiebreakers will also be used where necessary to sort teams for seeding in the Round of 16.

During the single-elimination phase of the tournament, games tied at the end of regulation will continue to play 5-on-5, 20-minute sudden-death overtime periods until one team scores. Teams will be re-seeded for each successive round.

The tournament will be scored via xkoranate, using the SQIS Modifiers and no shootouts. Style modifiers, selected by each nation for their own team, may range from -5 to +5, representing a spectrum from very defensive to very aggressive play. Team skill values will be tightly grouped and determined using a combination of WCoH ranking and WJHC 14 performance.

Roleplay posts and rosters will be graded qualitatively, mainly on the basis of creativity. RP bonuses will be cumulative and fairly generous to compensate for those nations who may not have previous WJHC ranking off which to base a skill value.

Welcome!

On behalf of the citizens of the Federated Principality of Fluvannia, the Fluvannian Hockey Federation is pleased to welcome the participating national ice hockey teams of the 15th World Junior Hockey Championship! To ensure the enjoyment of all those who have travelled to Fluvannia for this tournament, whether as competitors, officials, spectators, or sightseers, the FHF and the Ministry of the Interior have partnered to release a guide to the nation as a whole, as well as the specific cities that will be hosting games.

Fluvannia

Basics
The Federated Principality of Fluvannia is a large nation, albeit one populated by only 19.4 million people. Blessed by an abundance of natural resources and a diligent, genial population, Fluvannia boasts one of the best standards of living throughout the Republic of Conservative Nations. A federation of three geographically separate and ethnically diverse regions, Fluvannia was for many years three sovereign nations ruled in personal union by the ancestors of the Crown Prince. Fluvan English is spoken throughout, though spectators in the capital city of Oshkosh and neighboring city of Appleton may notice traces of the Viinebeiko language in what is now the dialect in the Duchy of Winnebago. Similarly, visitors to the Piedmontese coast may notice the Umitaku syllabary as an auxiliary language in many places of business. While the Crown Prince serves as an active executive over the government, his powers are quite limited by the Constitution, as are those of the government over the general population. The House of Delegates and High Council, as the legislative houses, tend to hold the balance of power.

Paying for Things
The unit of currency in Fluvannia is the Mark, often simply written before the amount as M. Marks are issued in coins of 1, 2, and 5, with bills for 10, 20, 50, 100, and 500. Marks are divided into 100 cents, with coins of 1, 5, 10 (the "dess"), and 50c (the "half-crown"). Meals at smaller or fast-food restaurants are usually around M7-10 a person, with more upscale fare generally reaching around M30. A reasonable hotel room will usually cost around M50-70/night, and regular unleaded gasoline is usually in the range of M1.00-1.50/liter. Taxes are included in the listed price, so visitors need not worry about any unpleasant additions to the expected balance at the register.

Getting Around
Those who wish to get out and do a little sightseeing between their team's games may find it prudent to rent a vehicle. Generally speaking, this should prove easy as most foreign driver's licenses are accepted while on a valid visitor's visa. If you choose to do so, take note of three things: Fluvannia drives on the right side of the road; many vehicles here are equipped with manual transmissions, and the speed limits are displayed on signs in two units. Fluvannia recently underwent metrication, and speed limit signs currently have "SPEED" written across the middle, with the upper number showing the limit in miles per hour, and the lower number showing the limit in kilometers per hour. For those who do not wish to mingle with native motorists, all hosting cities have at least one type of mass transit available, including bus routes, taxi service, underground/elevated light rail, and even streetcar lines. Should you desire to travel between urban areas to attend all your team's games, doing so will prove very easy via passenger rail lines, but going from separate region to separate region -- which will be unnecessary until the knockout round -- is usually accomplished by air travel.

Sports
As one may expect, ice hockey is among the most popular sports in Fluvannia, and serves as the national winter sport. Played both professionally by the Fluvannia Hockey League and at the collegiate level in the Fluvannia Intercollegiate Athletic Association, evenings from October to April are often spent either at the local arena, or glued to the family television, the channel turned to Arena Sportsnet and the remote hidden exceedingly well. Given the expense associated with playing hockey, especially in warmer parts of the country, a popular variant is broomball, essentially a version played on ice with a ball, less protective gear, and sneakers instead of skates. The warmer months see many Fluvannians enjoying the national summer sport: hurling, sometimes referred to as "the fastest sport on grass". Soccer, baseball, and inline hockey also have noteworthy followings. While not as widely considered to be "sports" in the strictest sense, various motorsports are popular in a nation known in part for its automotive industry. Chief among these are various forms of rally racing on backcountry gravel roads, and Formula W, which uses purpose-built spec racers powered by the aircooled boxer engine from the Windmotor Bubble.

Climate
As a nation north of the Equator, this tournament is being held around the earlier weeks of autumn. Oshkosh and Appleton will likely be less warm than the other cities, with temperatures around 55F / 13C. Rochester is expected to be closer to 60F / 16C, and the four Piedmontese host cities will see temperatures around 70F / 21C. It is advised that all visitors dress accordingly, and remember that all host cities are near sizeable bodies of water and thus can experience unexpected weather.

What to Eat
Fluvannian cuisine is a rather eclectic mix that reflects its diverse geography and cultural heritage, as well as the various ethnic groups to have immigrated over the years. Though Fluvannia does not have an official national food or crop, many would likely assert with tongue in cheek that the potato would qualify. From gnocchi to mashed potatoes to poutine, Fluvannians incorporate the spud in numerous ways. Between the potato, other pasta forms, and an assortment of rice dishes -- including the bounty of sushi restaurants in the Umitaku communities on the Piedmontese coast -- do not be dismayed at smaller portion sizes when visiting Fluvannian restaurants, because they will not leave you wanting for seconds. Fluvannians are also known for having a bit of a sweet tooth; so much so that, much like those who only drive Windmotors engaging in friendly banter with loyal Sudatsuyo customers, the debate for supremacy between Furbish cream pie, key lime pie, and lemon merengue pie sees no end in sight.

Oshkosh
The national capital, as well as the capital of the Duchy of Winnebago, Oshkosh is among the northernmost capital cities on the planet. While not the largest city in the nation, it holds the crown -- no pun intended -- as the site of various monuments and parks, Foxmouth Palace, the official residence of the Crown Prince, and the Fluvannian Capitol Building.

Appleton
The largest city in the Duchy of Winnebago, Appleton is a city known for its historic architecture. Not all of that architecture is old however; Appleton is the home of early-20th century architect Richard Taliijesin whose achievements eventually won him recognition as the portrait on the 50 Mark note. On the sports front, Appleton is the home of the Appleton Bears, 2020 winners of the Union Cup, the Championship Trophy of the Fluvannia Hockey League.

Rochester
The seat of the County of Monroe, Rochester is Fluvannia's largest city, and the only metropolitan area with two teams in the Fluvannian Hockey League. One of these -- the Tigers, who play in suburban Henrietta -- made the 2020 Union Cup Final, only to squander a 3-1 series lead and lose to Appleton in seven games. Long ago a city of merchants located at the mouth of the Genesee into Lake Ontarijärvi -- not to mention the cultural boundary between the Viinibeiko peoples to the north and the Fluvans and Burgwieser to the south and east -- it has remained as the country's financial capital into the modern era.

Charlottesville
The capital of the Duchy of Piedmont, Charlottesville was for several centuries the seat of the royal family. It remains today home to what is arguably the finest institution of higher education in the country, Piedmont University, which also is known for being one of the more successful hockey programs in FIAA history. In part due to the school's presence, Charlottesville is also a city noted as having several advanced industries making it their home, including several software developers and biomedical engineering firms. The local FHL team, the Chargers, made it to the playoffs in 2020, but lost to the Harrisonburg Highlanders in six games in the first round.

Harrisonburg
A smaller city compared to most on this list, Harrisonburg is mostly known for one of two things, depending on who is being asked: either as the capital of the Fluvannian skiing scene, or as the home of the country's second-largest automaker, Sudatsuyo. Perfectly tailored to their native habitat, multiple Sudatsuyo models are popular for all sorts of racing -- of various degrees of legality -- up and down the mountain roads of northern Piedmont.

Scottsville
One of Fluvannia's largest port cities, Scottsville was once a town located at the point where the Jacobs River emptied into the Thessian Ocean. Now a port roughly 2 mi / 3 km inland due to silting, "Steelsville" was one of the quickest Fluvannian cities to adapt during the Industrial Revolution, and has remained the heart of the nation's manufacturing industry ever since -- including serving as the home and main factory complex of Fluvannia's largest automaker, Windmotor.

Palmyra
The ancestral hometown of the royal family, Palmyra's surrounding countryside still plays host to the Crown Prince's winter palace. Palmyra is also the unofficial "capital" of the Umitaku community, descendants of a seafaring people that arrived and settled on the Piedmont coast over a thousand years ago. Known for their indelible aesthetic and culinary influences on Fluvannian culture, the Umitaku historically placed great cultural importance on military service, and Palmyra's location fairly near the coast combined with its continued role as the home of the Royal Fluvannian Military Academy has led to Palmyra being the only major Fluvannian city with a majority Umitaku population.

Coach Martin Pelleur, age 49
Pelleur was tapped to manage the Junior Stars based on his work developing the coaching programme for Sarzonian junior hockey. Sarzonia's Incorporated Ice Hockey Federation realises the team would likely be behind the eight ball compared with other teams, so they lean on Pelleur's patience with what they expect to be a lengthy process. Pelleur's pedigree is working with offence.

Assistant Coach Brett Tanguay, Sr. Age 41
The team's defence-minded assistant coach will handle the defencemen and defensive forwards even though his son Brett, Jr. is an offensive forward on the team.

Goaltending Coach Todd Ranford, age 46
Ranford spent four years after his retirement as a goalie working as a studio analyst for Sarzonian Hockey Channel broadcasts, but is itching for a chance to go behind the bench. This is his first coaching experience.

Trainer/Team Physician Clayre Bennett, age 47
Bennett earned a medical degree after her five-year playing career in a women's hockey league in Delaclava ended. She is eager to play her trade with a competitive sport team.

Franks is a stand up goalie who plays the puck well and can be a weapon when the Stars are shorthanded. He scored a goal into an empty net during a college game last season.

Liut employs a butterfly style and relies heavily on his reflexes to make up for his lack of experience in goal. Needs work on his puck handling skills.
35 Connor Whalen, 20, 5-foot-11, 190 pounds
Tends toward the butterfly style of play. He has some puck handling skills, but is just coming back from an extended absence due to a torn knee ligament.

Defencemen
2 Joel Roessel, 20, 6-foot-1, 205 pounds
Makes up for relative lack of size with agility and a sixth sense of knowing where and when to play the puck. Can deliver terrifying checks.
3 Mike Stevens, 20, 6-foot, 200 pounds
Also not the biggest guy, nut is blindingly fast and reads the situation on ice very well. He has strong chemistry with Roessel.
13 Hunter Abrams, 19, 6-foot-4, 235 pounds
Abrams has the size and just enough speed to deliver powerful checks. He doesn't like getting into fights, but won't hesitate to in order to defend himself or a teammate.
19 Larry Rollins, 18, 6-foot 2, 200 pounds
He doesn't have the size of his defensive partner, but has more speed. They are roommates and get on well, though they are learning to play together.
25 Ashleigh Whitfield, 20, 5-foot-9, 175 pounds
Whitfield has been playing hockey almost her entire life and uses positioning and her ability to read the tendencies of her opponents to overcome her lack of size. She won't hesitate to mix it up in the corner or drop the gloves if necessary.
27 Christian Channing, 20, 6-foot-4, 225 pounds
Another heavy checker and aggressive presence on ice, he is quick to defend Whitfield or any teammate if needed.
36 Cal Isaacs, 20, 6-foot, 205 pounds
He's there to provide depth for the defence and could be an emergency goalie if all three goalies were unable to suit up or play.

Forwards
Left Winger 10 Josh Evans, 20 5-foot-11, 175 pounds
He's the guy who plays every shift as if his family's honour depended on it. He's frequently mucking up in the corner scrums and can score on occasion.
Centre 8 George Anderson, 19, 6-foot-1, 195 pounds
He wins faceoff and distributes the puck extremely well and is a key presence on the power play. He can be deceptive with his shot and score goals.
7 Brett Tanguay, Jr., 20, 6-foot-1, 215 pounds
He has skill and power, and fires a blistering shot from the point. The son of the defence-minded assistant coach is as offence-minded as it gets.
12 LW Jamie Preston, 20, 5-foot-8, 170 pounds
He spends a lot of time in the weight room when he isn't focused on hockey. He has some defensive skills and will work shorthanded shifts.
14 C Joyce Bradley, 18, 5-foot-4, 145 pounds
She uses speed and positioning to make up for lack of size. She can pinpoint passes right on the tape of just about any Junior Stars player.
17 RW Nate Tyson, 17, 6-foot-5, 218 pounds
He's an imposing presence, especially on the penalty kill, even though he's as gentle as they come off the ice. He has good puck handling and shooting skills.
18 LW Yves St. Louis, 19, 5-foot-10, 185 pounds
He has a laser of a lefty shot from the point and scored 26 goals in an abbreviated 50-game schedule for his junior league. He's coming off an injury to his hamstring that likely cost him a spot on the first line.
20 C Xavier Healey, 20, 6-foot, 197 pounds
He's likely to be called upon in late game situations in the event the Stars need to win a faceoff in a close match. At the very least, he can provide backup if the main faceoff centre gets kicked out of the dot.
21 RW Alan Wilkins, 19, 6-foot-1, 205 pounds
Wilkins is a regular presence on his team's penalty kill unit and is one of Sarzonia's best defensive forwards.
23 LW Quinn Hadley, 21, 6-foot-4, 225 pounds
Hadley is on the Stars checking line for a reason. He also serves as the team's enforcer and led his league in penalty minutes.
28 C Frank Teague, 19, 6-foot-1, 210 pounds
He is also a checking line player, but more because of his defensive prowess.

C Sebastian Svedberg - 18 (Ilmarcess Citadel) The focal point of the Snowy Owls, great speed and extremely precise passer. Could have a better scoring touch, but he more than makes up for it with his assists.
LW Anders Strandberg - 17 (Thorncliff Ravens) A sniper that has seen THL time already, very nimble on the skates and with superior stick handling skills.
RW Nicholas Perrier - 17 (Samakar Storm) More physical than the other two, Perrier can make room for other players to push into, not the fastest, but hard and precise shot.

2nd Line
C Gareth McLoughlin - 18 (Avanaroch Avalanche) Despite his young age he exudes calm and confidence, able to rein his wingers in when they get a little too enthusiastic. Decent goal scorer, but can read the game very well.
LW Olavi Simontaival - 18 (Fort Cafragilis Defenders) Another great talent from Viljamark, Simontaival is a natural born scorer. Not the fastest player on the ice, but his laser-precise shots have him in the notebooks of a lot of scouts!
RW Michael van Doren - 20 (Port Rhovanyon Kraken) Quick and agile, van Doren can avoid many hits like this. Has great stick handling and good drive towards the goal.

3rd Line
C Henrik Ågren - 17 (Skarraborg Tundra Thunder) Some say Ågren is wasted on the third line, but that's what happens when you have talents such as Svedberg and McLoughlin ahead of you. He has blazing speed that enables him to get to pucks first and set up behind the opponent's goal to distribute to his wingers.
LW Morgan Bouchard - 19 (Blakefield Razors) Likes to take chances with his shots, which often works great, but has led to some of his team mates complaining about him being selfish.

C Garth McMahon - 19 (Oriannor Skyhawks) Very physical centre with limited offensive upside, but tremendous presence in defense, trying to stop quick breakaways

RW Mark Spruce - 17 (Guillarim Lions) Befitting his name, Spruce is built like a tree, tall and wide. Goals of his are considered a super power, because they are so rare, but he will shut down the opponents with remarkable efficiency.

1st Defensive Line
LD Sakari Mäntylä - 19 (Istafyr Raiders) Hardest shot in the league, has caused injuries before. Has great blocking power and awareness to play the quick pass to the free team mate for a breakaway.
RD Dean Brathwaite - 17 (Peycarh Pumas) Less of a scoring threat, but a defensive monster. Delivers huge, but fair, checks, very secure with the puck.

2nd Defensive Line
LD Christer Törnqvist - 17 (Fort Cafragilis Defenders) Has played winger before, but has been re-trained to defenseman to take advantage of his speed and shotblocking abilities.
RD Mikko Louhivaara - 17 (Ilmarcess Citadel) A heavy hitter if there ever was one, Louhivaara has been likened to a brick wall when it comes to defending. Not the best stickhandler, but has a very heavy shot.

3rd Defensive Line
LD Brian Goodenow - 17 (Morannon Monsters) Fast skater that will try to get the puck off your stick before attempting to check. Needs to bulk up to avoid being shouldered out of the way.
RD Brent Stolarz - 18 (Meshdoy Saints) Surprising offensive upside despite being regarded as shutdown defender. Quick hands help with that.

GK Miska Immonen - 18 (Xanark Frostbite) Classic butterfly tender, very agile with great technique. Still has to work on high pucks.

Coach: Stepan Havel, Borograd Bulls

Stepan Havel has been the coach of the SHL’s Borograd Bulls for a few years now, and in that time has earned a reputation as a strong coach who is able to get the best out of his players, and emphasizes teamwork above all else. It’s allowed the Bulls to be one of the best teams in the SHL for the last for years, and recent results show it: 4 players picked in the first round of the most recent Ehrenliga draft. Only 1 of those players is available to join this team in Fluvannia, but Havel is eager to get to work with this team.

The team features 4 returning players from the team that captured the gold medal at the 14th World Junior Hockey Championship. These players will form the core of the team, however, they will also be joined by other drafted players and some of the top prospects from this year’s upcoming draft. The big-name returning player is defenceman Jaroslav Zevnik, the defenceman who was the only 17 year old on the team at WJHC 14. While last time around, the team was led by its stars like Aleksej Knejz, Evgeni Tomic and Leon Goss, this time there is more of a group dynamic - everyone here is a very capable player. Havel is therefore seen as the perfect choice for this group, as he emphasizes a hardworking, ‘lunch-pail crew’ of a team.

First Forward Line

Three Ehrenliga first round draft picks here, and the Goldhorns’ top line is certainly filled with talent. Slobodan Zuzek is an explosive winger who loves to score goals. He’s capable of setting himself up on the right side half boards, and has a cannon of a one-timer. He’s a great power play player as well. Down the middle of the ice is Danilo Krusic, who might just be the most creative player on this team. A little undersized, he’s a great playmaker and should do well on a line with Zuzek. Complementing them is Erik Spahn, the Saints draft choice who has a strong wrist shot. He’s a noted playoff performer at the junior level, and seems to step up in high-pressure situations.

Second Forward Line

Josef Schneider was the last cut from the team at the 14th WJHC, and he set a reminder on his phone afterwards for every morning: ‘Cut from World Junior team that won gold.’ It served as incredible motivation for Schneider, who led the TMJHL in goals for the rest of the year, and helped him become a top 10 pick in the draft. He’s continued to terrorize TMJHL goalies, and should be one of the top goalscorers at this tournament. Leopold Buhl is a two-way centre who will be served well on this line, the TMJHL’s reigning defensive player of the year pairing with two forward-minded wingers. Elias Borgen is the expected first overall pick in this season’s draft, and the strong playmaking winger will be perfect alongside Schneider.

Third Forward Line

Vaso Jelenko is the only player on this team with some Ehrenliga experience, having spent 7 games at the start of the season on Trkev’s fourth line. He’ll be hoping to bring some of what he learned here, the two-way winger adding a physical presence to the Goldhorns third line. Elias Nalder was the extra forward on the gold medal winning team, this time he gets a line of his own, centreing what appears to be the energy unit. With them is Rupert Kieber, who will be responsible for driving the offence on this line - but can also punish opposing players with his physicality.

This line can serve as a defensively-strong unit, another physical line, or a line that might be able to put up some points with limited minutes in the offensive zone. Kraus is one of the top draft prospects this year, and has put up points with the Jr. Admirals, while Potokar is highly-valued by Olympia Borograd for his play in his own zone. Hannes Simson is a tough, physical player good at winning pucks. All of these players are multidimensional, and we could see Stepan Havel deploy them in a variety of situations.

Jaro Zevnik is seen as the best defenceman in the upcoming Ehrenliga draft, and is well-regarded for his ability to both move the puck well and also play a physical game. Andrija Babic was the seventh D on that team in Stelburg, but he’ll get a chance to shine here. He’s a strong puck-mover who is also a good power play quarterback for this team.

Scouts were surprised when Emil Seidler fell all the way to the Stelburg Kaisers’ in last season’s entry draft - one scout saying “He has top 5 talent.” An injury in his draft year, however, saw him slide - and also saw him miss out on the World Juniors in his hometown. This year, however, he’s got a key role to play as a strong, smooth-skating defenceman on this team. Watch for Seidler to be a player who steps up over the course of this tournament. Beside him is Matko Pirs, a player Stepan Havel knows quite well from his time at the Bulls. Pirs is a solid two-way defender, and is also excellent on the penalty kill.

The duo of Seelowe Marlesee prospects make up the Goldhorns’ third defence pairing. Klaus Pilez was Marlesee’s first round pick last year, which was somewhat surprising as many scouts had him pinned as a second rounder. Pilez’s best strength is his size, and his ability to lay a big hit. Look out for his slapshot, too - it’s a real cannon from the point if he gets time to unload it. Thorsten Wegner, meanwhile, was the second round pick, and is a smaller, quicker player than his partner. Look for Wegner to join the rush and make smart decisions in the offensive zone, which he has more freedom to do alongside a stay-at-home player like Pilez.

On the back end, Vaclav Blazek is the 7th D - a great puck-mover, and one of the quickest skaters in the SHL, but a little lightweight. Look to see both of these players getting minutes throughout the tournament.

Zmagoslav Drevenzek, the Orlovi Stavropol draft choice, is the anointed starter here for the Goldhorns. He has been excellent in net for the Aces this season, and was the best goalie in the SHL statistically before departing for training camp. He’s a very athletic goalie who is also strong at playing the puck. Valentin Egger was the third string on the WJHC 14 team, he’ll be the back-up now to Drevenzek. His experiences from last time should have a key role to play on this team, as he will be expected to serve as a major character in the locker room as the backup. Daniel Kress is here as the third choice, unlikely to see any minutes but ready to go if called upon. He’s a very big goalie, good at covering most of the net, but his athleticism suffers a bit for it.

Group and Schedule

The Goldhorns have been drawn into Group A of the tournament, alongside some of the top hockey nations in the world. The biggest match here is arguably the clash with Banija, whom the Goldhorns faced in the Semifinal of WJHC 14, and a rival from Southwestern Atlantian Oceania. World Cup of Hockey 39 champs Cassadaigua are in the group as well, they were also semifinalists at WJHC 14 - with Donnacona not returning to the tournament, that’s the gold, bronze and 4th place finishers from Stelburg/St. Jakob in the group. Other strong hockey nations in the group include Kelssek, who hosted WCoH 39, and Lorenthia, who the Goldhorns faced at the senior level in WCoH 38’s Round of 16. Hosts Fluvannia will also provide a difficult challenge, there will certainly be energy in that game as the hosts look to make a big splash. The group is rounded out by international hockey newcomers Sylestone and United Osean States.

U20 HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP BEGINS TOMORROW

The 15th World Junior Hockey Championship will get underway tomorrow in eight cities around the country, with the best under-20 players various hockey-playing nations from around the multiverse have to offer. Our own Fluvannian Hockey Federation submitted a bid to host, and as it was accepted, these stars of tomorrow will be coming to our shores to demonstrate their craft. 32 teams will participate, and it is safe to presume that in particular one of them will be feeling the pressure. The Fluvannian junior team has some course-correcting to do -- not only did they fall a single goal short of advancing to the single-elimination round in WJHC 14, they also must do whatever they can to ease the pain brought on from seeing the senior squad come up a single win short of advancing at the 40th World Cup of Hockey. While that particular result is not their responsibility, three consecutive counts of "close, but no cigar" across both levels of international hockey -- the most recent coming on home soil -- may be too much for the populace to bear at what is by a wide margin the sport at which our citizens exhibit the most talent.

If advancing to the single-elimination stage is their goal, then they have their work cut out for them. The main drawback of being the host team is that it often puts you in a group with the toughest competition, and this particular tournament is no exception. The Cubs have slotted in to Group A, and boy -- what a group. Most noticeable would be Siovanija and Teusland, who are the reigning champions of this event and also happen to be the reigning champions at the senior level to boot. Cassadaigua, most recent bronze-medal winners at the WJHC. Banija and Kelssek, mainstays of the international hockey circuit's upper crust -- the former being the team who lost the bronze to Cassadaigua. Yes, we may also share a group with several nations who are new to the junior hockey scene, but our own debut at the WJHC saw the Cubs a single goal from crashing the Round of 16, so it would always be most wise to treat each team as an equal obstacle to the next.

That all said, there are also a few things working in the Cubs' favor, most of them stemming from their role as hosts. They will be able to play games in front of crowds of their own very passionate fans. They will not have any large bouts of travel before the tournament starts, and will suffer from no jet lag as a result. They will be accustomed to the climate for this time of year, as they are not leaving that with which they are most familiar. The food they eat will be familiar to them. They will suffer no culture shock, no nagging sensations of homesickness. While most players talented enough to crack an international roster are capable of buckling down and doing what it is they arrived to do, it should be noted that these players are still but teenagers, young adults; such homesick feelings may prove more difficult for them to process than for their elders.

For those fans interested in supporting their young representatives on this most accessible of international stages, it should be noted that Group A will be playing their games in Oshkosh and Appleton. Namely, they will be in Appleton on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday the 18th, and in Oshkosh on Tuesday, Saturday, and Monday the 19th.

Annual Introduction:

With the second version of the revived World Junior Hockey Championship, the Ministry of Sports and the Anthoran Ice Hockey Federation have announced a joint decision to send a team of representatives each edition, beginning with this one. The announcement was made at the conclusion of the first revival, the 14th edition, in anticipation for it's successor tournament and also to give time for the various staff and training to occur. AIHF President Valois announced that he has hired Hugo McClelland, former star winger for the Kervegeun HC side, as the head coach for the team, which has been nicknamed the Wardens in honor of an old pro-amateur collegiate level team from some decades ago within Anthor. McClelland was known for his commanding presence on the ice and offensive prowess, taking home a brace of MVP titles during his career and some playoff accolades, he elected to hire on Fabien Daniellson formerly an AC on the Ancinnes Rangers as his assistant coach. Both individuals have become known throughout the informal and often disorganized amateur scene in Anthor as quality developmental-focused coaches.

Initially, McClelland pushed for only players who had not yet been drafted into the AIHF to be allowed in the selection process, however a Ministry of Sport directive and policy prevents such a distinction and thus any player in Anthor under the age of 21 is eligible for selection. Regardless of this, McClelland publicly went on record that he would try to give priority to undrafted players, as he viewed this as the best chance for them to display their skills, further train on areas that need development and potentially raise their draft stock or even get them into the attention for the draft. Only three professional players ended up being selected, Joel Brenton of Anciness, Kenneth Ewart of the Pioneers and Rio Ferdinand of Yarmouth, although Rio is still a bench prospect who hasn't gotten many minutes all though both Kenneth and Joel have played very, very well so far in the current season, both received a number of All-Star votes though they did not win an official nod.

The remainder of the players come from the informally organized amateur and youth leagues across Anthor, with a few highlights though not many are known very well in the media due to the disorganized nature of the youth and amateur scene; there have long been talks of resurrecting an official organization under the Federation, the last one having run from 523 AL till 587 AL before the Federation shut it down to shift the funding elsewhere (namely into funding southern expansions) and it has long been missed, particularly in the north. Perhaps a strong performance here could help spark further discussion in favor?

The Sarzonian Under 20 national hockey team hopes that its debut appearance in the previous World Junior Hockey Championship will provide momentum for the current 15th edition.

The Junior Stars managed to slip out of a brutally difficult group called the group of death by hockey prognosticators with a 1-0-2 record and face a Terre Septentrionale side that was a dominant group winner and unbeaten and undrawn at 3-0-0.

The Junior Stars rode a dominant performance by Brett Tanguay, Jr en route to a 5-1 rout over the Nordiques and a second round battle against the top seeded host nation. Donnaconan media named Tanguay the player of the tournament by a wide margin, but Tanguay said the team's quarterfinals defeat would only make them even hungrier.

"We had a great couple of weeks of training and we want to prove to ourselves and the hockey world that we are a team to be reckoned with," he said.

Sarzonia will face the Nordiques again, this time as members of the same qualifying group. Goaltender Owen Franks said he's expecting the Nordiques to be fired up to seek revenge for the surprising beatdown at the hands of the debutant Junior Stars.

"They're going to be champing at the bit to get after us," Franks said. "We handed them their asses, so they're gonna want to prove something to us." Sarzonia will also face Savojarna, Graintfjall, Kohnhead, Elejamie, Tikariot, and Susuvi. However, it's Matchday 4 against the Nordiques that will provide the most intriguing storyline.

"That match has the making of a rivalry," manager Martin Pelleur said. "We have to make sure we're focused on Elejamie for Matchday 1 and all our opponents when we face them, but that match against the Nordiques is going to be circled on a lot of calendars."

The Tikariot Hockey Federation herewith announces the participation of the THF U-21 national team at the 15th World Junior Hockey Championship held in Fluvannia.
It is the first time a Tikariotian team will participate in a hockey event such as this and in an attempt to establish junior hockey as a viable alternative to other sports such as football, the THF commits to the fullest support to the young athletes in their first overseas tournament.

Our coach Andreas Samuelsson has nominated 32 of Tikariot's finest youth players in an attempt to measure the strength of our players against the world's elite. We have been drawn into Group C with Savojarna, Terre Septentrionale, Sarzonia, Graintfjall, Kohnhead, Elejamie and Susuvi and while we are aware of the strength and reputation of these nations, we are positive that we will be able to have a successful tournament.

Anders Sturesson: I did not say that either. For something to be a successful tournament it does not necessarily have to be a win. Sure, we would be more than happy, but given the very competitive nature of the World Junior Hockey Championship we cannot expect anything. It will be a great learning experience for our young playres to be able to compete with the best of the best in their age group and any win - of games, not necessarily the tournament - will be deemed a success.

Mikael Forsgren, Fort Viljan Courier. It looks like there is no sport we can escape Græntfjall‌ and our record against them is negative in each and every one of them. Are they like the boogeyman of Tikariotian sports?

Anders Sturesson: (chuckles) It almost looks like it, yes, but we will not let that influence us, in the end they are just an opponent like everybody else.

Mohamed Bin Wadani, Alcassar Observer. Will the outcome of this tournament influence if Tikariot will continue to pursue junior hockey?

Anders Sturesson: We started this team to support children taking up hockey and continuing to grow into it, so no, it will not influence it. Other than any successes actually increasing the interest in it.

ALL EYES ON THE TOURNAMENT
With the upcoming 97th OJL Entry Draft, numerous Ontorisan scouts have been spotted at the WJHC.

Mattias Corispan highlights the number of draft-eligible Ontorisans participating in the tournament. However, with a greater need for foreign talent, don't expect for scouts to be focusing on this skilled forward.

SCOTTSVILLE - The OJL is easily one of the most prestigious and valuable leagues in the hockey world. Despite an ongoing dispute between the World Cup of Hockey Federation and the OJL surrounding the participation of OJL players in the WCoH, the league has retained its value.

The World Junior Hockey Championships is one of the few events where the top prospects from Ontorisa can compete against foreigners, but it also highlights where foreign players can shine and potentially be signed or drafted depending on their eligibility. While domestic Isles players receive a considerable amount of attention, the OJL has recently put forward incentives for teams to be riskier with their drafting in order to increase the diversity of the league. These incentives have reportedly included small amounts of financial incentives as well as unmentioned others. There has been criticism that this would jeopardize the whole point of the draft, which is to select prospects based on their skill and potential, not because the league has given money to teams to draft foreigners.

Drama aside, scouts have flocked to the nation of Fluvannia in order to observe the tournament. The Big Four, Kelixsburg Legionnaires, Calvisburg Guardians, Tetorosburg Titans, and Recolosburg Tridents, have reportedly sent as many as eight scouts each to make sure no coverage of the games are missed. Once again, with the upcoming OJL Entry Draft, all eyes have shifted towards the tournament.

Despite being a warm Pacific Island nation, not only is ice hockey the most popular sport in Elejamie, followed by football/soccer (both are acceptable in Elejamie) and rugby [union], but they've also been quite a considerable force in it.The men's national side was a dominant side that won three World Cups of Hockey (29, 31 and 35), finished runners-up twice (30 and 32), finished third twice (28 and 37) and finished fourth once (34); however, this dominant streak would be cut short following their group stage exit at the 38th edition that also saw the EIHB withdraw from the World Cup of Hockey Federation due to some controversial goings on during that tournament. A B-team was assembled for the 12th Winter Olympics, where they not only won the gold medal (something the A-team would fail to achieve when they gave it a try the following contest) but there was also the whirlwind romance between third line right defenceman Jay Bailey and Kelly Morgenstern, a skier from Mount Pleasant, that sadly came to an end when they had to go their separate ways following the end of the tournament, especially as ice hockey's essentially non-existant in the latter's home country and she didn't want to leave. The junior team, however, hasn't seen much success, with a decent fourth place finish in their debut at the 8th edition before a group stage exit in the 9th edition (a controversial tournament when it was revealed that a few games were fixed), another group stage exit where they just sucked full stop and a third group stage exit at the 14th edition due to a lack of time given to prepare. Hopefully they don't suck this time.

15th WJHC preview

Charlottesville, Fluvannia - My uncle liked my work at the World Volleyball Expo so he asked me to cover the World Junior Hockey Championship. I'm so happy about that, it's my favorite sport! So, the WJHC is about to start and Terre Septentrionale is really looking for it after our early elimination by Sarzonia in the round of 16 at the WJHC 14. I was so pissed in my living room when they lost! Both teams are now in the same group and daddy says it might be the start of a new rivalry. I hope our players won't fight because I hate fights but I know we have some players who can fight including Alex-Olivier Châteauneuf, Carl-Olivier Groleau-Pinard, Radoslaw Wielkiewicz and Jackson Korczak.

Group C also consists of Elejamie, mommy says they're a 3 time World Cup of Hockey champion but they never won a medal in the WJHC. I'm too young for having seen any of their championship. Savojarna are also in our group and they're usually a good hockey nation too. The rest of the teams are newcomers Graintfjall, Kohnhead, Susuvi and Tikariot. Tikariot might be the better one of them.

First we play against Susuvi, a nation with weird names, in Charlottesville. Then we travel to Harrisonburg to play against Savojarna. On matchdays 3 and 4 we play against Tikariot and Sarzonia, so game 2,3 and 4 will be extremely important. Then we play against Graintfjall, Kohnhead and Elejamie, some teams who can surprise, especially Elejamie.

I believe we're better than anyone in our group and here's my predictions for group C:

Three of Kelssek’s players to watch at the World Junior Championships

The World Junior Hockey Championship attracts a certain kind of fan who claims – or wants to be able to claim – encyclopedic knowledge and blithe predictions about who the next superstars are. Some say it’s a purer version of the sport, full of energy and less of the cynical and dirty plays wily adult veterans have perfected over the years. Some say it’s just a bit obsessive to fixate on players under 20 years old too. We’ll just tell you that you can watch Kelssek’s matches live from Fluvannia on KBC2 and other tournaments streamed online through kbcPlayer.

Oh, also, it might be worth knowing some of the players that fans have a keen interest in watching.

Chris Brguljan (age 20, Inter Latrobe)
A lightning-fast skater with a quick release, Brguljan featured in 32 Premiership matches this past season and has shown signs he’s ready to step up to the first team. Internationale put him on the fourth line in the Desjardins Cup playoffs and he proved that he can beat top-flight goalies and terrorized less talented defenders. He turned heads on loan to Regional One outfit Saintsport Raiders two years ago when he racked up a 1.9 points-per-game average over 46 games as an 18-year old. The main fault in his game is that he struggles with board battles and often takes holding penalties in his efforts to win them. Given time and, one imagines, protein shakes, he will hopefully put on the bulk he’ll need in the KHL Premiership.

Mandy Bart (age 19, Burnaby Ravens)
A tenacious customer with a rapier-quick poke check. Bart broke into the first team this season on the third pairing but she’s expected to have top-pairing potential. The one weakness is with the offensive side of her game; while capable of a deadly point shot you can’t rely on Bart to make plays and spot the right pass. It’s something the coaches at Burnaby have really been working on and you can see some progress over the season – this will be a good chance to spot whether Bart can make it work at a high level.

Eunan Miyamoto (age 17, Escadron Dorval)
The youngest player on the team, he’ll be celebrating his 18th birthday in Fluvannia if Kelssek makes it past the first round. He jokes that he spent a lot of time in the driveway having to play goalie for his older brother Ian, but that’s probably played some part in his development. If anything, he’s even more highly touted than Ian and has already registered 7 Premiership starts, although he’s been turning out for the Elite League team which is far better for his development than sitting on the first team’s bench. Rated as being one of the strongest technical goalies coaches have seen in a while.
