The role play is centered around the state of the Milky Way Galaxy in the 26th Millennium. The all encompassing Galactic Imperium is crumbling. Economic and social stagnation, moral decay, the slowing of scientific inquiry, technology run amok to its own detriment. Knowledge being lost and forgotten in the fires of increasing amounts of conflict across the Galaxy. Humanity, founders of the Imperium, and the dominant species in the Galaxy is fading in power. As numerous sectors and constituent states splinter, fragment, while warlordism proves increasingly rampant. The central authority of the Emperor and the Imperial Government weakening as more and more power is handed over to regional and local rulers. The Imperial Senate, founded four thousand years prior to the start of the role play, has grown ineffective, lax, and hedonistic in their day to day running of the Imperium. Imperial bureaucracy once known to be uncompromisingly efficient in governing such a vast domain has grown fat, convoluted, and corrupt. Players will have to make a hard choice. To try and save the Imperium or work to their own ends, whether if it hastens the Empire's fall, or a resurgent revival. As such players are encouraged to take positions of power in the Galactic Imperium in order to keep themselves relevant in the role play. As a politician, head of a Great House, high ranking Imperial officer, or whatever interests the player most. Further I cannot stress enough the fact that advanced Imperial Technology is increasingly rare. Due to the gradual decline in technology, knowledge, and technical expertise as the Galaxy recedes into what could very well be an Interstellar Dark Age.

Humanity in these times is just as various and lords over various Xenos species. Humanity of the 26th Millennium has diversified heavily through adaptation to new worlds, genetic editing, cybernetics, and mutation. Nova Terrans for example sport reflective cat eyes allowing them to see in total darkness. As such Humanity is just as varied as the Xenos they've assimilated or dominated into joining their Imperium.

It is the 26th Millennium and the Tsaraj-Emperor sits uneasily upon The Celestial Throne. The Galactic Imperium stretches across the Milky Way Galaxy and even claims dominion over the Magellanic Clouds. An Empire of approximately thirty-five million worlds and even more space stations, outposts, and mining colonies. For over twenty thousand years it has endured; encompassing Humanity's Golden Age as a space faring civilization. Extending over a period longer than any except for Human pre-history. Emerging victorious against numerous foes of all sorts. Giving rise to an unprecedented Golden Age for Humanity. The Pax Imperialis having lasted for several thousand years. Yet, the façade is cracking. Being chipped away at an ever increasing rate. The Imperium is decaying, failing, as economic and social stagnation take hold. Wars ravage countless worlds from insurrection, rebellion, and civil strife. Technology having run amok to cause frightening levels of damage to the Empire's infrastructure as devastating weapons are brought to bear by more and more warring factions. Inadvertently, causing such internal damage as to lead to the loss of knowledge, prosperity, and hasten the spreading rot of a Galaxy sliding towards anarchy. Knowledge is being replaced by religious fervor and dogmatism, nurtured by fear and paranoia of hungry warlords. This may not readily perceptible to the average Imperial citizen, who may reside on a world yet untouched by all the horrors going on in the Galaxy, but it is happening.

The Imperium is centered on the world of Nova Terra, a city planet, and capital of the Empire. Home to two and a half Trillion people. A planet almost entirely covered in continent spanning city-scape. Stretching from dangerous Under Cities to the glittering gemstone encrusted spires of the top levels which are home to the Nova Terran elite. The Imperial District being the only region that still retains natural fauna and native wildlife. Covering a significant portion of the Northern continent and within it's confines sits the Imperial Palace. The Imperial Dynasty, The Imperial House of Val'Vaeniad, also holds residence on the Imperial World of Odin. A paradise world of beauty and untarnished environment. Opposite of the built up and completely urbanized world of Nova Terra.

The Imperium is the sole sovereign nation at the start of the role play. A Galactic political entity that stretches the breadth and width of the Milky Way Galaxy. Previously the bastion for civilization and all of its achievements in the Known Universe. However, it is not centralized by any means. Due the sheer size and scope of the Galactic Imperium the Empire is heavily decentralized and supported by a delicate balance of power. A balance grown more turbulent in recent centuries.

The Galactic Imperium is broadly constituted by four main political blocs:

Imperial Worlds which are governed by Imperial Governors. Their titles reflecting the level of jurisdiction they possess. Imperial Amtsbegs are Governors whose power is entirely civil in nature. Imperial Ambans are military governors and generally also hold rank in the Imperial military. While lastly the Imperial Siridar are civil governors also given control over military forces assigned to their region of governorship. A technical fourth type exists in the form of Imperial Palatine-Siridar whom have been granted hereditary control over their territories but still a technical Imperial Office and thus not accorded the same rights and privileges as the Galactic Peerage. Directly above Governors which oversee singular planets or star systems are the Imperial Gespan. Overseeing entire Oversectors of space approximately amounting to specific star clusters. Operating under the supervision of Imperial Viceroys overseeing entire Sectors spanning dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of Star Systems. The exact 'borders' of these administrative zones shifting and changing as the Emperor and Imperial Senate dictate. The title of Ispan also exists in parallel to Gespans in that they are Governors dual wielding civil and military power on an as needed basis. While Viceroys may have the additional title of Guvernadur bestowed upon them by the Emperor and Imperial Senate which effectively grants them governing autonomy over a specific region of space in the name of the Emperor.

Next are the territorial possessions of the Imperium's Dominai Majora. The Great Houses. The Galaxy's most powerful noble families who oversee private dominions confirmed by blood and charter. Some may be as small as singular worlds or moons. Others comprise hundreds of worlds across dozens of star systems. Further, not all of these interstellar fiefdoms are consolidated. These private dominions criss-crossing across the breadth and width of the Milky Way Galaxy. The result of millennia of political maneuver, colonization, internecine warfare, and strategic marriages. The Peerage of the Empire is multitudinous and powerful. Many host large fortunes and private military forces of their own. Their ambitions kept in balance by the other powers of the Imperium. Their titles in turn vary from lowly Barons who would be lucky to possess a single world to those of Count, Marquis, Duke, Bey and King. Though title does not always reflect power, it is a safe indicator.

Third are the Semi-autonomous states existing in a bewildering array. Effectively, Semi-Autonomous States or SAS are the non-peerage vassals of the Empire. Acquired through subjugation, created via legislation, or assimilated into the Imperium's larger political framework voluntarily. The SAS's have a seat in the Imperial Senate and are given the privilege of maintaining their own internal structure, most if not all of their cultural practices, and to an extent their own military forces to patrol their domains. SAS's may be as small as a single star system or stretching across entire star clusters. In the same category are the Imperial Protectorates. Polities forbidden from having their own military forces but possess their own internal self-rule.

The Fourth power which be are the Orders Ecumenic. The Ecumenical Council of the Imperium which was a recent addition to be officially recognized and given seats in the Imperial Senate. The Orders Ecumenic represent the major, state recognized, and often territorially sanctioned (given plots of land or even entire worlds) religions of the Galaxy. Such as Mahayana Cathericism, Bahai'Shido, Kalergism, Terranism, Evangelical Hatterism, and Zensunni.

There are of course various other powers, but often have to rely on lobbying and connections rather than having any voting seat at the Imperial political table, and these are The Galactic Commercial Combine (GCC) which is a major publicly traded mega-corporation and the Imperial Interstellar Spacing Guild (IISG)which is the largest guild of interstellar space travel servicers and companies to name but two.

Planetary Class:
Gaia/Alpha Class: Rare natural gems of worlds, paradise worlds.
Continental/Beta Class: Terrestrial planets
Terraformed/Epsilon Class: Worlds that have been terraformed through artificial means
Arid/Gamma Class: Planets that are terrestrial but arid climate
Barren/Delta Class: Most planets with an atmosphere are just barren rock
Alpine/Cheti Class: Mountainous worlds, often mineral rich
Artic/Omega Class: Freezing worlds of snow and ice
Dead/Zeta: Lifeless worlds that are either atmosphere less
Death/Theta Class: Worlds where the very environment is hostile to non-natives
Tomb/Iota Class: Technically a sub-class of a world that once had life or an atmosphere and now doesn't.
Volcanic/Yota Class: Hellish worlds of fire and unstable tectonic activity

The Galactic Imperium of past epochs used to be firmly in the hands of the Tsaraj-Emperor, advised by the Imperial Council, until the Act of Consolation in the 24th Millennium created the Rhaum Szenatus or Imperial Senate. A bicameral body with the upper house populated by the Peerage in the Rhaumsraad containing the Great Houses and the Lower House or Niedsenedd made up of representatives from each Sector, SAS, and the Representatives from the Orders Ecumenic. Divulging the legislative power from the Celestial-Throne. The Act of Consolation also separated the Tsaraj-Emperor's right to structure the Imperium's judicial apparatus. Forming the Imperial High Judiciary as a third branch of Imperial governance. However, the Emperor is still recognized as Supreme Justice and may preside over appeals and grant pardons. As such the Imperial apparatus is theoretically supposed to be in balance.

The Galactic Imperium is host to many cultures and customs. To detail each and every one would take a multitude of lifetimes. Even languages stretch into the many thousands. However, there are several which hold dominance. Lingua Imperialis or Imperial Standard is for all intents and purposes English, for the facilitation of the role play. This is followed by Nova Terran Basic which is the language of the capital and common in many sectors is a hodge podge of many past languages melded together. There is also Bicameral Cant the language of machines, AI, and those interfaced with them. This is followed by the esoteric language of Lingua Ancien which is the language of Old Terra according to ancient manuscripts and appears as a much more archaic form of Nova Terran Basic.

The Economy of the Galactic Imperium is massive and multitudinous from sector to sector make up. The Imperial Currency, as issued by the Imperial Treasury via the Imperial Mints located across the Galaxy, is the Aureus Imperial or Gold Backs as colloquially known. A physical paper or electronically formatted currency backed by Helium-3 and 4;. In fact due to the sheer mineral wealth of the Imperium it is not uncommon for Mints to provide Aureus Imperial in gold or silver bullion for a specific amount stamped onto the pieces. These currencies are by Imperial Decree to be accepted on every Imperial World or exchanged into the local currency. There also exists Credit Imperial or Imperial Credits which is an Imperial government sanctioned cryptocurrency popular in the Periphery. However, due to the volatile nature of cryptocurrencies one does not always get a good exchange rate or even cost when purchasing goods. Some planets may not even accept them as is. Alongside these official forms are a plurality of local currencies, that while pegged to the Imperial Currency, are tailored to the local economies of a Star Cluster or region. Generally, these are practical by the fact the vast majority of Imperial Citizens seldom leave their home star systems or Star Cluster. Indeed, the cost of owning, let alone maintaining, a star ship is beyond the means of many; nor, particularly necessary for private citizens to own them throughout their normal lives.

The Imperial Military operates under a universal, yet decentralized, command and control hierarchy; which, depending on branch can be more or less in terms of decentralization.
The Imperial Army, Jarheads, Mudsloggers, and a myriad other flattering or insulting names. The Imperial Army's history places it as the oldest branch in the Imperium under the technicality that Tsaraj-Emperor Augustian formally referred to the Imperial Army in the first year of his reign. The Imperial Army originally being the amalgamation and generic term for the extremely wide array of forces that came under the Imperium's banner. Originally having authority over their Navy counterparts till the Act of Separation under Tsaraj-Emperor Oserian in the 6000's of the Imperial Calendar formally dissolved any inter-rank authority save under specific monarch decree.

The Imperial Army has fought across thousands of star systems since the Imperium's founding, and went head to head with the The Shadow in over sixty-million distinct engagements across the Galaxy. The Army garrisons worlds and locations across the Imperium. Operating over one hundred Academies and specializing in dozens of terrestrial and EVA environments. It is the most diverse branch in the Imperial military, a common joke being, "The Army has a soldier for that!" A reference to the high degree of specialized formations existing within its organization. The Imperial Army is raised at the Sector level, but under the generic direction of Army High Command located on Sagittar Prime and has Chief of Staff sitting at Imperial High Command on Nova Terra.

The Army is organized into fireteams, squads, platoons, companies, battalions, Regiments/Brigades, Divisions, Corps, Armies, System Armies, Sector Armies, and Theatre Armies. The lowest unit ranging down to a pair of troopers at minimum to the top level possessing up to a few billion soldiers.

The Imperial Navy, Imperial Starfleet, Imperial Warfleet, and informally by dozens of other names across various dialects and planets. The Navy is the void arm of enforcing Imperial Will. At first it was simply the vastly enlarged and rapidly expanding Nova Terran Navy, itself borne from the Nova Terran Space Defense Force, and was not formally referred to as the Imperial Navy until twenty years into the reign of Tsaraj-Emperor Augustian I (circa 5800 Common Era). The Imperial Navy has grown, been reformed, and evolved over the course of the Imperium's history. During the reign of Tsaraj-Emperor Augustian I, it numbered several hundred thousand vessels of various classes and bewildering array of origins, having absorbed many of the leftover ships of defeated polities. As the early Navy was beset by a vaunted logistical nightmare on how to deal with patrolling a vast dominion. Augustian however laid the grown work of the Navy's organizational structure by tasking over half of it to specific Sectors or even Star Clusters, and the other half into strategic or reserve fleets.

The Navy under Emperor Siegan I, became the primary space enforcers of the Lex Imperialis when it was introduced during his reign, and in t he following civil wars dealing with the Imperial successions of Kysteria and Amadira a centralized academy system was formed across the Galaxy. The Navy escorted colonizing vessels into the Magellanic Clouds and were at the forefront with the war against the The Shadow. During which time the Rank of Grand Admiral was introduced and the Navy had to recover from massive losses despite ultimate victory being achieved. Losing tens of billions of spacers, pilots, and officers in the titanic struggle.

The Imperial Navy is organized from the top down into strategic, sector, and reserve units. The strategic formations of the Navy are not assigned to a specific region of space but usually given an Imperial Warrant to pursue specific goals, patrol specific regions, or conduct certain operations. These formations are known as Armadas (numbered) and broken down into several numbered Fleets. The Sector fleets are assigned specific regions of space to patrol. Often these formations adopt the name of the sector they are assigned too, many wearing them with pride as esprit d'corps or putting them on the campaign banners of their ships to show how many areas, battles, or actions they've participated in. The Reserve Fleets are numbered but always with the letter 'R' given before their numeric designation. Below the Fleet level are flotillas and squadrons. Squadrons typically number a dozen ships in total while flotillas are usually taskforces assigned for specific operations.

Marines
The Imperial Marine Corps, Gunheads (by their Navy counterparts), or Void Troopers are subordinate to the Navy and assigned to protect Navy ships, stations, installations, and property. Trained in Marine Corps Academies, first founded under Tsaraj-Emperor Archedammus I in the 7th Millennium of the Imperial Calendar, as before the Navy provided their own security and did not have a distinct organization specializing in it. Marines are often in competition with their Army counterparts when operating in the same theater since, on occasion, their actions may overlap. On more than one occasion full on brawls between battalions have occurred in the mess halls over trivial matters of whose unit has racked up more kills over their formation's history.

The Imperial Guard, Imperial Stormtroopers, and other names refers to the elite corps of troops fanatically loyal to the Tsaraj-Emperor, Celestial Throne, and Galactic Imperium. Routinely recruiting orphans into their ranks, the Guard is often fanatical in their devotion, which can put them at odds with other organizations. A Guardsman's life is a Spartan one, enduring a tough and rigorous recruitment and training regimen, followed by often being posted to the most hazardous warzones in the Galaxy. The end result is a cold, efficient, devoted warrior who will take orders without question and carry on fighting even if suffering crippling casualties. As such Guardsmen are often only sent in to deal with civilians when in extreme situations do to the fact they have a record for dispensing harsh, often casualty strewn, policies for those breaking Imperial Law. Guardsmen at the tactical level resemble their Army counterparts, organized into fire teams, squads, platoons, and companies. But as you move into the strategic realm they differ. Guard battalions are often purely combat formations, support battalions instead replaced by support brigades on Guard ORBAT's, Guard Regiments, Divisions, and Legions are often permanent formations with long campaign histories. Usually given honorifics by reigning monarchs for their actions. The top level organization is the Legion ranging from 150k to one million Guardsmen.

The Guard originated during the reign of Tsaraj-Emperor Valorian, replacing the older Imperial Palace, Household, and Royal troops (whom dated back to the Nova Terran Imperium or pre-Galactic Imperium nation).

The Praetorians, Praetorian Guard, Imperial Bodyguards, Palace Guards, Watchers of the Throne, Ten Thousand Gilded Dragons; the Praetorians go by many names. The official bodyguards and protectors of the Imperial family, Palace District on Nova Terra, and any major property like the Imperial complexes on Odin. They are as old as the Galactic Imperium itself and perhaps even predate it. Emperor Augustian makes mention of the 300 'Palatina' as the likely original core of warriors. Certainly by the reign of Emperor Valorian they took their canonical appearance and size at 10,000 Praetorians plus support, auxiliary, and automaton assets. The Praetorians are an intensively secret organization often seen as wielding arcane technology and even their exact recruitment methods are unknown to all outside of their number. Staunchly loyal to the Imperial family, Celestial throne, and reigning Emperor who directly pays and oversees their finance. Praetorian suits are themselves artifacts, the armor that is iconic of them being ancient Solarian suits of armor, and possibly even predate the Nova Terran Imperium (hence predating the Galactic Imperium by centuries if not thousands of years). Their weapons themselves are often artifacts or the most advanced of Imperial technologies and assets. For no expense is too much for the Emperor's guardians. They alone grant audiences, access to the Palace district, and protect the Imperial Vaults. Not even the Senate may command them nor demand inquiries unto them for they are beholden to no one but whomever sits on the Celestial Throne and even the Lex Imperialis is explicit upon their powers being beyond reproach. Praetorians may act as the Tsaraj-Emperor's authority and persona in absentia and wield imperium maius in regards to operations within their purview or warrant from the reigning monarch. In regards to Imperial citizens they are official arbitrators with extra-judiciary powers, and may wield tribunician powers in pursuit of their duties, for not even Senators may be except from them in regards to the Lex Imperialis. A Praetorians may be Judge, Jury, and Executioner in pursuit of their duties.

The Imperial Intelligence Bureau or II for short is the amalgamation of the various intelligence agencies in the Imperium. Until the reign of Emperor Valorian and his son, Valerius, the different branches had their own distinct Intelligence commands. However, in an effort for greater coordination they where all amalgamated into one central agency under the Emperor. The II is the most fluid branch in the Imperial military and as such its teams, sections, and divisions vary wildly from one to the other. Imperial Intelligence is thus very compartmentalized into sections for each branch, many sectors, and differing specialties.

Knowledge is power, guard it well-Unknown Ancient Terran Author

The History of Mankind, the Milky Way Galaxy as a whole, and that of the Galactic Imperium could fill truly untold pages. Indeed, one could spend lifetimes reading every volume, treatise, manuscript, and thesis contained within the vast archives of the Imperial Library on Nova Terra. As a result there are much summarization to be had and thus the most important events in the history of Humanity are told below. From humble beginnings to the present as Master of all they survey. The Imperium itself spans much of what is considered to be Human civilization itself. From simple fires and stone tools to agriculture, cities, and nations. Till the 1960's when Mankind first set foot on the singular moon of its fabled home world: Terra; or, to the ancients it was known as 'Earth'. That is if Terra, or Earth rather, even existed in the first place. Imperial scholars have striven for many years to locate the fabled home world of Humanity. The record growing more hazy as one looks back before the time of the Galactic Imperium while some may wonder if Humanity even lived on a world named Terra, Earth, at all! For the sake of ease we will look at Humanity from when the most ancient manuscripts, their accuracy disputed of course, detail Mankind first began to spread out into the cosmos.

Era of Old Earth
Prehistory-2200 Common Era (-3,586 Imperial Year and before)
Spanning from Pre-History to over 19,000 years before the current epoch. The Era of Old Earth was a time when Humanity was confined to the Sol System and the only habitable planet of Earth. Until by the Mid-21st Century Earth was plagued with resource wars, famine, and all manner of conflict. It was this desperation that launched the first automated mining stations and research facilities on The Moon, Mars, and the Asteroid belt. Progressing to permanent habitats on the Moon and Mars by 2080. By 2100 Humanity, according to the ancient texts, spoke of crisis on Earth and the first generation of Humans fled to a place called 'Alpha Centauri'. Many more would follow for other neighboring stars as per the ancient manuscripts words. Allowing Mankind some respite as the ancient texts speak of faster-than-light travel being discovered some time after. Many Imperial scholars reckon somewhere in the late 22nd Century by inference. However, the conservative range offered by the Imperial College of Ancient Humanity Research speculates it could have been achieved as late as -18,300 by Imperial reckoning. What is known through surviving scraps of artifacts retrieved from ruins and abandoned sites in the Sagittarius and Orion Arms postulate a primitive Alcubierre Drive capable of no more than Five light-years sustained acceleration per jump. These jumps being extremely inefficient and taxing on the ships not yet advanced superstructure. Confining Humanity to a small sphere no more than fifty light years across at most.

The United Federation, Corporate, and First Interstellar Republic Era's
2200 Common Era-2477 Common Era (-3,584 to -3,309 Imperial Calendar)

The limits of Human FTL and navigation limited Humanity to the local bubble of stellar systems. However, even then great leaps in colonization where forming. The ancient texts speaking such as the Zensunni Zsufik Canicle and the Mahayana Catheric Bible speak of a 'Red Planet' opposite Earth being inhabited by Humans. Of colonies in the clouds of others worlds and settlements on such ancient places like Tauron and Tau Cheti. Along with this came the first colonial wars as more developed worlds began to show signs of increased planetary consciousness of themselves as separate from Earth. Eventually, culminating into the damaging Great Colonial Schism as out lined both in the Mahayana Catheric Vedian Chronicles and the Bahai'Shido book Tale of Five Kingdoms and Thirteen Princes; which, was a series of wars from 2314-2347CE. Bringing an end to the United Federation and formally dissolving the "United Nations" and their parliamentary system. In exchange establishing the "United Earth Directorate" as per the writings of the ancient Terran known John Erikson-Stroud. The Directorate being much in the same way as a corporate conglomerate if these ancient chronicles are to be believed.

However, the United Earth Directorate would prove relatively short lived and just over a century later this regime was toppled by insurrection. The Bahai'Shido state it was the work of the Ancient Enlightened Human known simply as Zoroastri. The Terranists speak of the personification of one of their own Gods named Helios-Rah, born of virgin parents, who freed Humanity from the shackles of self-oppression. The secular texts paint a picture of mass revolt and the institution of Humanity's first true interstellar Republic. The 'Terran Republic'. An institution that according to archeology and historical literature lasted nearly a century. The Republic itself ending much as it had begun, in the fires of conflict, and this time the new order was solidified under an Empire. The Terran Empire.

Of Empire and Diaspora
2477 Common Era-2975 Common Era (-3,309 to -2,811 Imperial Calendar)

The Terran Empire proved quite stable and Humanity made significant strides during the period. Despite the first Human-Xeno Wars breaking out during this time. Humanity, through the discovering of improved Alcubierre engines, the discovery of Warp Drive, and primitive Luminal Drives managed to spread rapidly throughout the Orion Arm and even establish outposts in the nearer star clusters of nearer Galactic arms and spurs. Advancements in nearly every field caused a booming population and rapid increase in the power and prestige of Humanity. While it is during this time the 'Original Twenty' are mentioned. The Original Twenty being mysterious ancient worlds of largely myth and legend, founded beyond the reach of the Empire, and thus civilization evolved on there for generations until re-connecting with their Terran cousins. An event which proved shocking and led to eventual conflict as the Terran Empire grew jealous of these worlds nascent and growing power. Planets such as Aurora, Melpomenia, Sagittarian, Solaria, Polaris, and others soon found themselves in conflict with the empire of Earth. A confrontation which eventually led to the destruction of many ancient worlds, the loss of much knowledge, and possibly the loss of Earth. As Terra makes no more than a passing foot note mention from here on out.

The Spacer Era
2975 Common Era-5786 Common Era (-2,811 to Year 1 of the Imperial Calendar)

The Era in which followed was anarchic and confusing as Humanity continued to spread ever outward. Colonizing the Sagittarius Arm, Cygnus, Scutum, and even Perseus towards the end of this epoch. Nations coming and going with the sands of time. The definitive truths of this bygone era are often intermittent and occasionally contradictory. However, what is known is that the First Data Blight originated on the ancient world of Procyon Primaris in the Orion Arm. Spreading like wildfire as the virus infected ship systems, artificial intelligences, robotic workers, and even cybernetics. Destroying data and causing all sorts of havoc. Indeed, much of the knowledge loss of this epoch can be seen to originate with the Data Blight and subsequent Data Plagues which erupted periodically.

The Rise of the Galactic Imperium
1 IC-948 IC

The Galactic Imperium sprung from the older Novan Imperium centered on the world of Nova Terra. An idyllic, resource rich, world with a strong martial tradition that on the ascension of Emperor Augustian I embarked on a rapid era of conquest, assimilation, vassalization, and ever expanding influence. Augustian became the First Tsaraj-Emperor and absorbed via conquest or diplomacy the other major polities within 30,000 light years of Galactic Disc. Numerous treatises and songs of this era spoke of the great Imperial victories and of the subsequent Imperial Renaissance that followed along side them as order, safety, and social drive were rekindled in the wake of the advancing, growing, Imperial military.

FTL became more and more advanced as this era progressed. The advancement of the Luminal Drive, the practical application of Gravitic drives utilizing chartered space lanes, the establishment of consistent commerce and interstellar banking systems. Cybernetics and gene editing rendered many past diseases extinct while the overall population lifespan expanded to a healthy 250 year average. The discovery of the Khriszper Sequence in 179 IC during the reign of the second Tsaraj-Emperor Tiberan I allowed the stable cloning of the recently deceased through tissue samples retrieved within a a few hours of death. The first Galactic Stock Exchange was established under Tiberan's grandson, Flavian, in 414 IC; while the last ruler of the Augustian Dynasty oversaw the near complete urbanization of Nova Terra in 900's IC.

Expanding the Imperial Frontier & Consolidation
949 IC-7141 IC

While this extensive epoch could be broken up into several sub-eras for the sake of ease it will be consolidated by the overall themes of the period. The Imperial Frontier under successive Emperor's, and Empresses' following the Wars of the Pragmatic Sanction, would continually move the Imperial Frontier towards the Periphery. The Periphery being the effective Outer Rim of the Galaxy of space, more than 35,000 light years beyond the Galactic Disc. While the Core (the inner 15,000 light years from Galactic Center) would become heavily explored, colonized, and prosperous. Truth be told the Inner 15,000 light years from the Galactic Core are the most heavily populated, industrialized, and wealthy star systems by sheer number. Despite extensive regions of the Sagittarius, Perseus, and Cygnus Arms also having wealthy and densely settled regions. This era saw the gradual extension of the Human life span past three hundred years and extensive use of cloning and controlled Human mutation. Producing the earliest 'Imperial Savants', Humans synthesized with the computational power of advanced computer systems, while hundreds of Xenos species were assimilated or domesticated by the ever expanding Galactic Imperium. Indeed, during the reign of Alexaendyr I (r. 5359-5551 IC) thousands of planets in the Periphery are eventually brought into the Imperial fold through colonization, annexation, or outright conquest and subjugation.

This period was not without issue as no less than four Imperial dynasties came and went upon the Celestial Throne. More than one civil war and at least two succession conflicts erupted during this time period. None the less the crowning achievements are hotly debated, but a popular one is the creation of efficient and fast terraforming methods during the middle and later parts of this era. Allowing scores of previously inhospitable planets to be colonized or at least exploited by the Galactic Imperium in a more cost-effective manner.

The Shadow
7142 IC-7812 IC

The Shadow is a name given by later Imperial Historians and Scholars to the time period just before, and during, the greatest conflict in Human history. The war against The Shadow. The Shadow is not a thing so much as a species. First encountered as Imperial explorers and colonists began moving into the Megallanic Clouds under the orders of the Tsaraj-Emperor Balaerius I and his son Baelan III. At first, for some decades, Imperial explorers only found long ruined civilizations and locations in the Megallanic Clouds. Until abruptly, The Shadow flooded forth, spreading as if disturbed by the ever expanding grasp of Humanity into the Milky Way Galaxy. The Shadow is ill-known and in contemporary files and texts of the period their description is nothing short of abject horror for all those whom lay eyes upon them. True to form no singular account is consistent with another when regarding The Shadow and what they were or could be other than a hyper-aggressive, adaptive, and rapidly spreading menace which took the entire mobilization of the Galactic Imperium to defeat. At the cost of an uncounted worlds and what some Historians possibly estimate to be trillions of casualties among the Imperial military alone. The Shadow's stalemate and then gradual defeat occurring in the climactic Battle of Nova Terra in 7812 IC. For even the Imperial Throneworld came under siege and billions were lost defending it. The Tsaraj-Emperor, Baelan III, led the Imperial forces valiantly until he too was slain leading his forces in the defense of the planet. Supposedly, appointing a man who would become Tsaraj-Emperor Valorian as his chosen successor.

Valorian is poorly understood in any secular sense beyond events in his rule. His life before hand an utter mystery. Only that he was a military official of some capacity and at least in Baelan's presence or vicinity when his predecessor perished. Valorian, however, soon entered messianic status among the religions of the period and after. He was of fabled Solarian blood, pure even, and the traits of which still manifest within the direct bloodline of his own descendants. Valorian's reign was the longest of any Tsaraj-Emperor before, and so far after, spanning over a millennia. His rule was noted as just and good. Though this could be just his supporters speaking. In either case Valorian's reign set the character and course for the Galactic Imperium in more ways than one. Soon being beatified by over a dozen separate faiths in a variety of capacities.

The Second Imperial Renaissance
7813 IC-12,944 IC

The Second Imperial Renaissance is generally considered to begin with the reign of Valorian and pass through his son and descendants. During this era the perfection of personal shielding temporarily rendered many threats via ballistic weapons low to nil. The suspensor field was invented. The first entirely AI controlled shipyards were built for the Imperial Navy. The Imperial Guard was formed and expanded steadily into the stereotypical stormtroopers of Imperial might. Nova Terra officially became a giant Ecumenopolis while the Imperial Palace reached it's present scope if not entire scale. The Mahayana and Catheric faiths unified during this era while the religion known as Terranism, a polytheistic faith, was founded and swiftly became popular among many Human populations. While the Periphery was officially considered brought into the Imperial fold in full. Thus the Galactic Imperium truly extended from one end of the Milky Way Galaxy to the other.

Era of Stagnation & Decline
12,945 IC-19,923 IC, The Present/25,709 Common Era

The Terran Schism, between Terranist humancentric zealots and the rest of the Imperium officially brought the Second Imperial Renaissance to an end by Imperial Scholar reckoning. The Terranist Zealots even on some occasion having Imperial backing. Subsequent centuries saw the creation of the Imperial Senate in 13,820 IC, issued in the Proclamation Imperial by Tsaraj-Emperor Talaszar. The separation of power from the Throne continuing in subsequent centuries as the Galactic Imperium entered a period of stagnation, if not outright decline, as increasing issues assailed the empire.

Technology in the 26th Millennium is incredibly varied, however, there are some standards and categories in which to classify them. Most worlds are at the start of the role play relatively bound within Low Imperial and High Imperial technology. Ranging from clean and plentiful energy derived power grids, efficient mass transit systems, suspensor technology, and advanced medical wonders allowing Humans to on average live a few centuries with much delayed aging. Listed below are examples of what sort of technology is available, though not always common. There are certain technologies more advanced than the current Imperial tech level, such as Solarian Technology, but they are often poorly understood and exceedingly rare.

Examples of Imperial Technology in the 26th Millennium:

Khriszper Sequence: Discovered in 179 IC and perfected in subsequent centuries. The Khriszper Sequence allows samples of recently deceased organisms, where the cellular decay has not progressed far enough to render copying impractical or prone to high error margins, and allow cloning. Even more costlier procedures can be implemented, under the right circumstances via Kasper Mnemonic Imagery which is flash digital copies of memories, for said clones to even possess the recollective memory of their predecessors. However, there is a danger of Hawser Syndrome afflicting such clones where self-realization of their reality causes a progressively worsening and violent psychosis. Current Imperial Law requires such clones to be given extensive psychological barriers to try and prevent this, but should they fail the clones are to be destroyed.

Suspensor Field: The Suspensor Field has its theoretical origins in Pre-Imperial History, but was not invented and perfected until the Second Renaissance Era. It is a field allowing individuals and even vehicles to exhibit anti-gravity properties. Commonly used in the gear of Imperial Orbital Drop Troops or Imperial Guard forces assaulting from aerial vehicles onto a target. However, it has useful industrial and commercial applications.

The Asimov Shield: Starship, structure, vehicular, and personal shielding is an age old concept in Human history. But was always a suitably rare, expensive, and unreliable form of protection until the Second Imperial Renaissance saw the perfection and wider application of shielding technology. Usually preventing objects over a certain velocity threshold from passing through, these shields are able to be used on individuals or scaled up to impressive generator devices to protect starships. Such shields are often unable to be used by private citizens (save the rich or affluent) though inferior quality shields or half-shields (protecting only half or a portion of the body/vehicle/structure) are in more common use. Shields are also used industrially and commercially when operating in inhospitable climates. Typically by industrial vehicles or structures with their own oxygen producing systems and thus allowing the shield to be configured as to prevent toxic particles found outside the shields perimeter to pass through.

The Luminal, Jump, Gravitic, and Alcubierre Drive: The Luminal Drive is the most advanced Imperial form of FTL and suitably costly. Though it is in common use with Imperial capital ships. The Luminal Drive allows ships to do a two-step 'phase-fold' and thus cross many thousands of light years in a matter of hours. Indeed, anything under a thousand light years may appear instant depending on the route. It is considered the natural evolution to the much older, simpler, and archaic Jump Drive. The Jump Drive operates under the pretension of a 'warp' engine in that is shunts the ship into another dimension in which it can achieve super-luminal speeds. However, the lack of the second 'fold' step allows error margins to be much higher, it is far slower, but much cheaper and thus commonly used by those who cannot afford a Luminal Drive. The Gravitic Drive is reliable in function but even slower than Jump Drives. It is a simpler, cost effective, form of FTL for relatively short distances. Frequently used by intra-system trawlers or ships designed to operate within a specific Star Cluster. Utilizing gravity tethers to sling a ship at near light speed or even beyond light speed to cross significant distances in days to weeks. The most archaic however is the Alcubierre. Deemed the 'poorest of the poor' in regards to FTL technology. The Alcubierre folds space in front of a ship and thus allows it to speedily transit along.

Canopus Medicae Capsule: A limited AI run capsule capable of treating victims of burns, broken bones, and more. Limited only by the material given to the capsules AI and the instructions encoded. The Canopus, along with other medical machines, allows Imperial Citizens a much higher chance of full recovery from even grievous injury. Often paired with a Helican Class Organ Printer to replace lost tissue and even limbs.

FTL Communications: The Imperium makes use of many forms of FTL communications. From sending messages at super-luminal speeds through the same methods as FTL. To intra-system communication via the Know-Sphere or K-Sphere. A form of hyper-advanced internet that, through proper infrastructure, can allow communication between star systems at super-luminal speeds.

Artificial Intelligence and Automatons: The Imperium makes use of various Artificial Intelligence, graded from Limited (Dumb AI) to Tertiary (Sub-Human intelligence), Secondary (Human but lacking full sentience) to Full (Full sentience and freedom of thought). Robots, Synthetics, and Cybernetics are common throughout the Imperium in either the private role, commercial, industrial, or military application.

Advanced Energy Production: The Galactic Imperium has a wide array of energy production and distribution means. From simple fission to advanced fusion, solar generation, and Higgs-Generator (an efficient and miniaturized particle accelerator reactor) and everything in between.

Name: Baldor I
Nickname: The Old Man
Age: 330
Birth Date: February 25th, 25,380 CE
Gender: Male
Planet of Origin: Nova Terra
Race/Species: Human-Solarian
Height: 6ft
Weight: 225Ib
Physical Description or Image: Image
Social Class: Nobility
Titles: Emperor of the Galactic Imperium
Occupation: Head of State for the Imperium
Hobbies/Pastimes: The ancient game of Chess, Equestrianism, and Writing
Talents/Skills: Competent Administrator, able to play multiple musical instruments, and possesses good skill in combat (formerly, he hasn't engaged in any sort of combat in decades).
Religious Beliefs: Atheist.
Personality: Charming, polite, and a gentleman. Baldor was raised for Imperial Court life and plays it well. However internally he is a deeply conflicted man who knows the Emperorship pales to what it once was. Concerned over the erosion of power in addition to the bickering Senate and the increasing fragmentation of the Empire.
Biography: Born to -Tsaraj-Emperor Koronus I and his sixth wife Verina, Koronus' only child, and rumored that the previous Emperor had to have Medicinal assistance to get his wife pregnant. A common joke during Koronus reign was of his rumored impotence. Baldor was born on a cold morning on the planet of Nova Terra. Within the Imperial Palace. Raised more by Empress Verina and the Imperial Vicar (chamberlain) Ernest da'Zurgenfeld than his own father; this was probably a good thing. Koronus was lazy and let more of the Celestial Thrones authority diminish. However, Baldor was raised to become quite the astute young man. Entering service with the Imperial Army and then the Guard to earn military experience at age 25. He lived, ate, and slept in the same rooms as Imperial soldiers. Although under the watchful eye of the Praetorians who where ever close by. Until the age of 42 when he left service and entered the administration. Appointed as the military governor of the troublesome planet of Orsar XIV. Needless to say he managed to end the rebellious sentiment there adequately enough.

In a more detailed summary of his military career the young would be Emperor entered service as a captain in the 15th Nova Terran Heavy Infantry, 'Emperor Valerian's I Own,' Regiment. The 50,000 strong formation was a veteran formation with a battle history stretching back since before the War with the OSB. The Regiment was deployed to the Perdatus Gulf and participated in the Assault on Alkaesor VII, the Siege of Tehrus, the Battle of Bloody Peak, and the pacification of Iraqqa Secundus. During that time Baldor managed to take part in frontline combat on numerous occasions despite all attempts at withholding him from direct danger. He earned the Solar Cross on two separate occasions along with four other members of his company during the Assault on Alkaesor VII and the Battle of Bloody Peak. The Solar Cross being one of the Imperium's highest forms of military honors and given for extreme bravery, gallantry, or valor. After three years the Regiment was rotated out of the conflict and he was promoted to the rank of Major. A year later he was a full Colonel and placed in command of the 2nd Nova Terran Armored Regiment, 'Gunheads,' for their fearsome reputation which some commanders call reckless. However their list of victories stretched back since the 9th Millennium. The Regiment was sent as part of the 889th Imperial Army Corps attached to the 98th Imperial Army fighting over the Kalesis System from multiple insurgencies along with the rebel government. It was there that he was wounded by a snipers laser bolt and it took three surgeries for the wound to be fully set to heal. Leaving the military at the age of 42.

Ascending to the Celestial Throne amidst much pomp, Baldor could have lived a life of endless luxury as the wealthiest man in the Galaxy, but instead chose modesty. Not being a genius, but not stupid either, Baldor is a man of relatively modest intellect and undeniable cunning. Marrying Augusta Va Angelus of Great House Angelus, he has five children: Valerian, Valeria, Verina, Romeran, and Reman. Aged 29, 27, 25, 23, and 23 respectively.

Name: Valeria
Nickname: Lady Indigo
Age: 27
Birth Date: October 31st, 25,682
Gender: Female
Planet of Origin: Nova Terra
Race/Species: Solarian (though officially listed as half-solarian/half baseline human)
Height: 6ft
Weight: 180
Physical Description or Image: Image
Social Class: Imperial Family
Titles: Imperial Crown Princess
Occupation: Senatorial Representative for the Emperor (formerly), Emperor's Executor (current)
Hobbies/Pastimes: Fencing, solar sailing, reading
Talents/Skills: Survival skills, excellent pilot
Religious Beliefs: Atheist
Personality: Polite if a bit impulsive at times. Unafraid to speak her mind, however she has since learned to be a negotiator in the capacity of representing the Imperial Family to the Senate
Biography: Born on Nova Terra in the Imperial Palace, unlike her brother, she never went into the military. Instead she was thrust into the Senatorial scene. Working with the Senate and observing the legislative process. Baldor hoped that one day she would become a Senator or Imperial Judiciary in the Imperial Justice system. Her life as a result has been a mix of backstabbing, boredom, and yearning for adventure. Hearing the stories of her brother and those of her father only make this worse.

After Valerian vanished unexpectedly Baldor retreated from public life. Leaving the new heir presumptive as the Emperor's Executor.

Name: Verina
Nickname: Little Angel, Her Holiness (by Terranist followers), The Silver Lady
Age: 25
Birth Date: November 5th, 25,684
Gender: Female
Planet of Origin: Odin
Race/Species: Official Records state Half-Solarian and Half-Nova Terran
Height: 5ft 11
Weight: 133
Physical Description or Image: Image
Social Class: Imperial Family
Titles: Lieutenant (Training for Command Level Rank)
Occupation: Grand Admiral and invested as a Matriarch of the Terranist Faith
Hobbies/Pastimes: Social media, swimming, taking care of animals, and surfing on Odin
Talents/Skills: Good fighter pilot and tactful ability to execute orders in tough situations.
Religious Beliefs: Terranism
Personality: Largely shy to those she is unfamiliar with, introverted, but it capable of being charming and flirtatious when social arrangements allow. Otherwise she is known to be bookish and often found pouring of Imperial manuals.
Biography: The third child of Emperor Baldor and his younger daughter. Verina wanted for nothing, but yet she stood out, for she was most like Valerian in resemblance; yet, was garnered with similar qualities as her father and older sister. She was a kind and gentle child growing up, largely on Odin, and cried when Valerian left to pursue his military training. She was always more attached to Valerian than to any of her other siblings, and the two where largely inseparable during their childhoods save when Valerian was on Nova Terra or else ware. Unlike her younger brothers who where largely raised on Nova Terra, like Valeria before her, Verina was raised mostly on Odin. Like her older brother.

At the age of 16 she was enrolled into the Imperial Logisticae Academy at Raithon Prime. Raithon Prime being home to an extensive Imperial military training base for the Logisticae in the Inner Worlds. Her father initially allowing this for a short time. She graduated after a year, a year early, with certificates in Cybernetics and nanotechnology. Her learning having been accelerated by the intervention of Baldor. Seeking to place her in one of the larger branches. She was transferred to the Imperial Navy, but did attend an eight week Marine training at Corona-Skie in the Middle Worlds. Arriving at the Sayshelle Naval Academy on the world of Santonni, located in the Outer Territories. Located in the deep Galactic South many thousands of light years away from Nova Terra. Sayshelle was home to one of the largest Naval bases and training centers in the Imperium.

Transferring with the rank of Ensign she was spent two years at the academy. Graduating with certification to fly assault craft, auxiliary craft, and larger ships up to cruisers. She was admitted into the Sayshelle Imperial Officers Academy in her second year and exited with the rank of Lieutenant. Her heavy course load took a toll on her however and she did attempt suicide more than once, possessing few real friends, and feeling distant from her family. However, the intervention of Valerian and Baldor managed to halt this activity. Since then she has been invested with high rank as befits her status as one of the Tsaraj-Emperor's scions.

After the vanishing of Valerian and the rise of Terranism she was a convert to the faith. Becoming Protector of the Faith and head of its Holy Orders.

Darn, this looks good Imp. RL is pressing me against a wall for the next week or so, but I'll keep an eye on this and maybe try throwing up an app once I get a better sense of my free time! Initial ideas might be a Mongol-based SAS with plenty of internal strife, or a character involved w/ the Imperium's religious bureaucracy.

I’m thinking of making an accomplished admiral who has been named ‘Guvernadur’ but is of a non-aristocratic background and so probably has some enemies because of that. What would be the upper limit of a territory that someone of that rank would govern? I was thinking of putting him in the ‘Southern’ Sagittarius arm but I don’t want to be OP.

@Bolslania, I should have the OP finished today or tomorrow

@GCCS
Yes there are truly countless possibilities to suite a variety of play styles. Either heavily character driven And/or faction driven.

@Rodez
That is possible. Typically a Guvernadur will oversee multiple star clusters, multiple sectors, and possibly be responsible for the governance of hundreds or even a few thousand Imperial Worlds. Given their autonomy status they generally have total control over the civil and military assets assigned to their administrative zone. Similar to Grand Modf Tarkin or IRL mixed civil-military officials. Only the Senate or Emperor may countermand their orders in their territories. However, when dealing with outside problems they have to cooperate with neighboring officials, Imperial or otherwise. As to why they’re created is usually due to some need. A region of space that is two is troublesome or problematic and requires a much closer central figure to govern. Such as regions of space increasingly suffering from rebellions, insurrection, Xenos incursion, religious strife, economic collapse, or any combination.

As for the Sagittarius Arm; that is one of the oldest colonized regions an thus probably the most heavily populated by the time of the 26th Millennium. Many old human worlds with histories over fifteen thousand years old are there. This does mean that problems can also be more severe and impactful as well. Rebellion or Insurrection in the Sagittarius Arm could be much more damaging due to the level of infrastructure, number of heavily populated and economically productive worlds, and density of mapped trade routes being disrupted. Further such problem makers would be much better equipped and funded than some backwater pirates or brigands on the fringes of the Galaxy.

OP, is it possible to play a political/governor character, think in the way of Palpatine or Amidala? I think that a scion of a Dominai Majora would fit that type of character. For the territory, perhaps somewhere along the Cruz-Scutum or Perseus arms (Perseus arm is one of the closest arms to Earth/Orion Arm, while Crux-Scutum is near the Galactic Center)

Yes it possible to play as those types of characters and be based in either of those regions.

Planning a militant religious order that doubles as a humanitarian relief force in unstable areas of the galaxy, inspired in roughly equal measure by the early Knights Hospitaller and by the amazing pun in the OP: "Bahai'Shido."
For really, I think that the poorest he that is in England hath a life to live as the greatest he. And therefore truly, Sir, I think it's clear that every man that is to live under a Government ought first by his own consent to put himself under that Government. And I do think that the poorest man in England is not at all bound in a strict sense to that Government that he hath not had a voice to put himself under.

Interesting premise, makes me think of the Imperium of Man and the Galatic Empire was fused into one.

The conflict of stagnation got me thinking of doing a reformist movement led by unorthodox leaders that's on the verge of leaning towards radical revolution. Almost like a space Huey Long or space Jack Reed from Kaiserreich.

Ooooh I'm interested. Out of curiosity, who makes up the Imperial Senate? Is it the peerage, elected/appointed delegates from the constituent worlds or systems, a mix? And are there limitations, such as like in ancient Rome where only the patrician class could sit in the Senate?

its bicameral with two sections. The Upper House composed of the Great Houses (most powerful peerage) and the lower house made up of the SAS, Orders Ecumenic, and a representative of each Imperial Sector. As such the Imperial Senate is made up of tens of thousands of members. The limitations which will be also put into the OP sections are:

-One member from each Great House (pre-req. is the control of at least an entire planet) may cast a vote or attend sessions. Typically this is the head of the house, their spouse, or other family member. Alternatively a representative may be selected to stand in and vote in the family's stead. Anything less than a planetary fiefdom disqualifies a House from sitting on the Imperial Senate.

-Each SAS is allowed a single vote and representative. This is the same for each Imperial Sector. Protectorates may send delegations to the Senate but have no voting power, which is the same for the major mega-corporations and guilds.

-The Orders Ecumenic officially are allocated two representatives and thus two votes. However one appointee is done by the leaders of the respective faiths and one by the Emperor. Both need not be confirmed by the Imperial Senate.
