The Southern Sea History Thread

Hello and welcome!

This is a thread for discussing and developing history between the different nations of the Southern Sea, be that history about cultural connections, trade or more. Despite the name and the thread's focus of creating more historical connections between Southern Sea nations, outsiders from within the Western Isles are more than welcome to join us, in order to create further historical relations between nations outside the Southern Sea and nations in the sub-region.

I currently don't have much already planned out for my nation but I'm open to discussing pretty much anything.

The only thing that's been drafted (and it's not even fully set in stone yet) is that Shidei and Corindia are pretty close buddies. Historically something similar to Japan and the Dutch, where Shidei is off doing its own thing mostly self contained and then Corindia came along and was pretty much the only outside country handling a lot of the trade market (and by proxy foreign policy for a while). Shidei at some point got tired of Corinida/Spain and booted them off the island so we could take back control over our own economic policies, but it was more of an amicable change instead of a bloody one.

I know Athara Magarat is going to be stalking this thread at some point, but per the TG sent the other day if you still need an ancient people who wandered off into the mainlands of Argus and Raedlon to be Proto-Kirat/Keomoran I can probably cover that, though I'm not entirely sure why one random small island would be a swingin' hotspot for early civilizations when there are much larger landmasses nearby.

Not a fan of the idea of Shidei being used as a launching point for the invasion of other islands, as you'd be far more likely to be sent to the bottom of the ocean than getting a strong enough foothold on Shidei soil you could use it as a military jump site.

While I overall have an idea for Aprosia's history, it's just the big picture and a lot of things can fit into that; wars, trade, more obscure things et cetera. Considering the short distance between us all, we just need a bit of imagination to come up with things.

Depending on when the whole 'Corindia trade daddy' happened, trade is something that would definately happen, be it either between us two directly or with the Noronicans (who managed to get a considerable amount of power in my foreign trade after the 1500s) and Corindians trading our goods. You being half-way to Argus could make it so that Aprosian traders would use you as a stop-point from where to continue to Argus or a trading post where we'd sell the goods to Argus traders, but this again depends on when the Corindian trade thingy is.

So many things have changed in the region since I last thought through my history, so there's quite a few gaps to fill in regards to trade, foreign relations, wars, religion, etc.... This, however, is a rough timeline for what I've got so far.

  • c. 3000 B.C.E. - 2500 B.C.E. : Settlement of Kenamali and surrounding islands
  • c. 700 - 800 C.E. : Formation of Hisawa Confederation - First Stable Ethnostate of Kenamali
  • c. 1000 - ? C.E. : Keno-Madu Hangate
  • 1348 - 1912 C.E. : Linavian Empire
  • 1939 C.E. - Present : Linavian Republic

Not listed: Relations with Pre-Muslim Aprosia - need a time frame for that since the Kenicized Aprosians have to come from somewhere.

There's also some period of downright brutal conflict with Razgrizz during the Imperial period that I need to reformulate since the main point of tension that set things off involved Samudera quite heavily.

Not a whole lot to go on, but something closer to a blank slate might be beneficial here. Maybe.

As an overall history for the record here...

  • c. 2900BCE - Settlement of Aprosia by the proto-Aprosiatic people
  • c. 0CE-1000CE - The Aprosian Empire / Kunihár monarchy / first unified Aprosiatic state
  • c. 1000CE-1200/1300CE - Khas-Kiratis come knocking, Yakkhalen dynasty and a Yakkha hangate
  • c. 1200/1300CE-1700CE - Independent kingdoms, Shia Islam arrives
  • 1700-1950 - Noronican colony
  • 1950-1954 - Shortlived post-colonial republic, falls to civil unrest and instability, military coup
  • 1954-1968 - Military government, majority of the civil unrest is tackled with the help of foreign powers (maybe Miklania + others)
  • 1968-1971 - Revolution, provisional government
  • 1971-1978 - Civil war, Aprosian socialists win
  • 1978-ongoing - Current Aprosian state

Most of this is very barebones though.

EDIT: As a quick sidenote, I always pictured the hangate as a Mughal style state, mixing Khas-Kirati and Aprosiatic elements, potentially going as far as to adopt the title 'Kunihár'

I remember us talking about 400-600CE, with my 'empire' invading your northern part, which would cause the larger migration of Aprosiatics there? Seeing that you have the Hisawa Confederacy in 700, before or during the formation of the Confederacy could be a good point where your people would kick my empire out. That's what first popped to my head atleast.

Also the fact that both of us have a hangate starting at around the same time and, seeing that your empire was formed in 1348, potentially ended at around the same time. Potential history there too.

Are NPCs Charbagnia and San Javier counted as Southern Sea for this thread? They are not being used right now. They were quite important during Imperial War times.

I'd imagine? They have their own threads but I'd imagine those threads are mostly for the RPs that have happened in those NPCs.

Hey guys, sorry for not replying to a thread I asked to be created. In other news I both feel fine and got a negative covid test back! As far as San Javier goes, the Iza natives are very closely related to Corindia's native populations, so there could be something to do there. Of course, that's based on an RP from 2016 so it's probably not super fresh in anyone's minds.

Overall I think it would be benefitial to have some sort of cultural similarities between our people. Adjusted to history, geographical distances etc of course. While I doubt that our people would be extremily similar, it would be realistic to have some similarities in my opinion.

The Aprosian Isle

Postby Shanzie » Tue Sep 22, 2020 4:21 am

Hello, friends!

Aprosia, Bhikkustan (soon to return in an unknown fashion to our island) and Apella all share the same large island. Between Aprosia, Apella, and I we have some of the largest populations our region has to offer in such a small space. Most of us share some ethnic ties, be it aprosian minorities, aprosian related cultures, or simply the crap hole that is the Aprosian languages. (no offense, but it gets messy). Given this situation, we have an opportunity to create a truly unique place in TWI with four active players with a vested interest in our nations, a common historical tie for cultures, and our place in the region.

As such, I was hoping the three (soon to be four of us) could put together a solid history on how this may happen. In order to do this, we need to discuss getting rid of the strange borders not by modifying the map, but by common agreeance on what a "realistic" border situation would look like and tying that realistic border to wars, treaties, and agreements between players OOC and nations IC as well.

The best way to start this is by posting a short synopsis of what we want our nations to look like in the current phase, how our nations got to this point in our current cannon, and, finally, what our relations may look like now in terms of collective treaties, pan-island organizations or treaties, and any border disputes that may still be occurring to this day.

As a side note, it would be best to maintain all communication about this to this thread rather than discord or TG to keep our thoughts in order and on record.

That being said, I will go ahead and post mine!

The Shanzian Federal Republic

Relevant Factbook

Shanzie is, at its core, a religious federal republic with three states. Each of these states were once nations of various religious majorities. Today, Al shera in the North is Islamic, Sanghora in the south is Hindu, and Bamora in the East is "roman" Catholic. They were united in 1948 (a date that can change) after IW1 due to the threat that Aprosia posed in its unification agenda. The unification was preceded by several internal conflicts and treaties over the course of the 18th and 19th centuries. It's people share common ethnic roots, though many speak different languages and the nation is sharply divided by religion. That religious division defines the government, the nation, and the people.

Our government is a federal republic with a bicameral parliament headed by the Prime Minster as head of state and the Deputy Prime Minister as head of government in many ways. The political parties, seats in both the House of Representatives and the House of Citizens are divided by the states in the interest of maintaining representation of all the major faiths, cultures, and states in the Republic. The state governments vary in their religiosity, structure, and role in their citizens lives, though all work closely with the established religion of their state.

Economically, strife, language barriers, education and healthcare shortfalls, as well as basic infrastructure being in a state of disarray, have kept the nation poor and on its knees. GDPpc is a mere 7600 or so with a population of 34.8 Million. The population is also sharply divided by rural vs urban life. Most of the largest cities in Shanzie have only recently grown as the population continues to move to cities for opportunities not afforded to the rural farmers, miners, and villages.

Militarily, Shanzie is a paranoid nation due to the looming threat by Aprosia that was especially active in the 90s and 2000s. As such, we have a large, well equipped army with modern anti-air defenses. Conscription is a part of life in Shanzie with a mandatory service of 2 years from 18-20 or civil service if military is objectionable or not possible due to health. The air force, while small, is built to defend air space and provide CAS for troops. The Navy is the smallest of the branches, acting mostly as a coastguard and supports the army with a fleet of cheap riverboats to patrol the two major rivers of Shanzie.

Historically, Shanzie was united due to the common threat that IW1 exposed in Aprosia as well as the rest of the world. This is where I have nothing written down. Up until the late 19th century, the Shanzian states of Al Shera, Bamora, and Sanghora were bitter enemies until a war in the late 19th century produced the first anti-Al Sheran coalition which produced treaties pushing for cooperation between the Hindu and Bamori states which included Al Shera prior to the Imperial War.

What I am looking for are three things:

    1. A path from the late 19th century to 1945-1950 when I unify
    2. A way to give origin to my Catholic and Hindu sections of the population
    3. A current political situation which puts Shanzie into a political, economic, and social disadvantage compared to not only the rest of the island, but the region as well.
    4. Rational, realistic cultural ties are a must!!! :)

Mine is really long due to my short factbook entry and if you guys link your factbooks on history and culture, it would obviously help. But stating what we want out of this and what we want our nations to look like at the end of it is going to be the best way to start. Thanks!

EDIT: talking to Bhikk on discord and he will be a bhudist nation, so I'm changing Hinduism to Bhuddism despite news post lol

2nd draft of religious history:
When Apela and Grecia existed as the Apereisa Empire (around 1300s), the south (modern day Apela) was Oelasthiriasi, as it had been most converted by foreign countries in Argus. The north (Grecia) was Catholic as many Bamoran settlers moved south (going to have to explain this eventually) and Roman Catholic churches started to set up. After the extremely influential leader of the Apereisa Empire died (haven't decided a name or title), it collapsed into these two separate states because of religious tensions. Through history, they have NOT existed peacefully had have clashed in several wars while isolating itself to most countries except close neighbors and allies. Due to the Lathrimonos Purge of Secular Protacists, many who fled arrived in Apela, which was a relatively moderate for religion at the time. This people had a great effect on Apela, and even though the religious establishments disliked this change, it still took place, and within a generation, majority of the population of Apela was Secular Protacist. The unification of Grecia and Apela in 2008 reignited religious tensions once again, and terrorist groups attacked major cities in both countries, but in the modern day, things have mostly been peaceful. Around 62% of Grecia's population is religious, and around 21% of Apela's population of religious, the communist government (I'll talk more about this later) in the mid 80s to 90s has had an effect of Apela's religious population.
Extra Note: I also forgot to mention that in NW Grecia, there is a significant Shia Islamic minority. For most of Grecia's history, they were persecuted and sometimes killed on a mass scale at certain points. Even in modern times, they were discriminated against, and it is still a large political issue in Grecia. During the rise of nationalism across the globe, there was a push for the group's independence that continues today.

Grecia will probably be relatively peaceful with them and trade, for Apela it depends on Bamora's relations at the time but they will mostly be hostile until late 1800s.

Fair. That will be fun.

NA, My military could help put down your civil unrest. We were never socialist, so keeping the socialist threat at bay would be in our interests. Of course, that would lead to crap relations in your socialist Aprosia, but maybe better relations now? Would be just the rivalry I would be looking for to keep me good and paranoid.

If you are referring to the 1950s civil unrest (or outright conflict), the socialists were barely in it, mostly offering political support and limited armed support, based on what I currently have on it.

The unrest was much more about ethnic and tribal issues in post-colonial politics. Now, take this with a grain of salt since this stuff is not outright confirmed with Noronica, but following the First Imperial War, several things led to the end of Nyssic colonization of Aprosia after the start of a major colonial revolt. With the First Imperial War being as destructive (and expensive) as it was, Noronica agreed on Aprosian independence and in 1950, that independence became a reality. Aprosia was founded as a unitary government, based on the former Nyssic colonial governance, but now under a democratic system. Atleast an attempted one...

Now, this was all very new and a combination of ethnic and tribal distrust and rivalries created a situation where a lot of the tribes and militias simply didn't give out their weapons, but kept them to ensure their status in the new system. And when that new system gave very little power to ethnic and tribal systems that had been established, the unrest slowly started. Imagine a situation where the central government controls large cities and maybe some highways, with vast amounts of territories basically ignoring the central government. This situation would largely calm down during the 1950s and bring up a military junta.

The Aprosian socialists? I don't know much about them during this time and most that I have with them during this period is that they aligned with those wishing to give more power to the ethnic groups and through that, to the local tribes. I always envisioned that with the end of the unrest through 'pacification', the nationalist factions got more popular support during late 50s and the 60s.

I think me and Miklania talked about the potentiality of Miklania assisting a Lon Nol style military government, so if you want to get in it during the 50s, that's not a problem with me.

Okey dokey I'll give the basic overview.

Hangate of Bhikkustan
Bhikkustan is a constitutionnel monarchy with a nominally functional democratic system and which has maintained the same borders and political leadership institution despite colonialisation. Majority Magar, it represents a strong continuation of the old khas kiraru empire and is often seen in this light. As a broad and sparsely populated country, its economy depends on mining and tourism with some agriculture, but the central government's control is not absolute. This is most true of the regions bordering Aprosia, which are majority aprosian and which have seen unrest for almost 50 years. This conflict is ethnic (magar vs aprosian), religious (Buddhist vs muslim), and political (monarchist vs socialist), but has been relatively low intensoty in recent years as Aprosia has attempted to reintegrate itself with the international community. Most political issues in Bhikkustan stem from this issue.Religiously, Bhikkustan is majority Buddhist with a sizeable muslim minority, both among the aprosians and also in domestic converts.
Plans
Once on the map, me and Aprosia are gonna develop on that disputed area with a potential !Crimea situation
Sunni Muslim ۞ Shafi'i Fiqh ۞ Ashari Aqidah ۞ Wasatiyyah
illegible nutrition enthousiast - nomadism or barbarism
Crimea is Russia Ukraine Tatar

So I have an idea as to how I will be unified.

After an equivelant of the Franco-Prussian war ends in the 19th century, both Sanghora and Bamora will eye actually taking over Al Shera. They will work closer together economically, socially, and militarily to ward off the "pest" Al Shera. Meanwhile, Al Shera will suffer economically, finally forced into war by the other nations during the Imperial War.

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=442305&p=37695501#p37695501

My post there.

The tension would reignite in the late 19th century when Al Shera, facing a crop crisis after a major storm caused the nation to suffer of prolonged flooding, moved to secure the disputed territory in the center of the nation which was much less prone to the flooding seasons that Al Shera often faced. Initially, the Al Sheran forces were successful, taking holding the land for months before the Barimions and Sanghorans moved together to remove the Islamic threat from the fertile fields.
Following the war, Sanghora and Bamora both began to work together to counter small attacks by the Al Sherans. Over the next 70 years, the conflict raged with low intensity, never facing any large battles, but plaguing the center of the nations around Varshala with skirmishes over the decades. That changed in 1941 and the beginning of the Imperial War.

Throughout the 1930's, Al Shera had been building it's army up as its economy and people remained stagnant. Unable to attack west against the Hangate of Bhikkustan and blockaded from the economies of Bamora and Sanghora by their embargos, Al Shera felt it had to attack. When the war began in 1941, Al Shera saw an opportunity. It declared war on Sanghora and Bamora on the side of the imperial powers, forcing both nations onto the side of the free powers. With new found support from ________, Al Shera launched a full scale invasion of Sanghora. Throughout the following war, battle lines surged forwards and backwards, wrecking the heart of Shanzie and subjecting its people to untold horrors as the war became one of ethnic dominance. Civilians were jailed in camps simply for their place of birth, villages burnt to the ground for suspected support of one side or another, and mountain villages faced the constant threat of destruction as each army sought control of the summits that over looked the heartland of Shanzie. Each nation suffered greatly economically, socially, and politically.

The War finally ended in 1948 after a cease fire was declared in 1947. The League of the Western Isles brought all three nations together and they signed a peace treaty with the aim of never having such a destructive war again. This treaty created the Federal Republic of Shanzie from the ashes of the broken nations.

@Aprosia, do you want to be the nation providing supplies to Al Shera? I'm pretty sure Noronica was an imperial power

Noronica was a free power from what I know, especially considering that Aprosian divisions fought against Athara Magarat. Although you could get underground support by Aprosian independence parties and potentially even volunteers; AM had a division of Aprosian PoWs who had defected.

Especially if Al Shera made it a religious jihad

Overview of Apelan-Grecian Union

The Apelan-Grecian Union (commonly called Apela) is a Federal Republic and Semi-Constitutional Monarchy. It is split between the district of Apela and the district of Grecia. These districts used to be separate nations, with religion being the main reason for their divide. Apela was Protactist and Grecia was Catholic, during their history they were involved in almost constant war. They were unified in 2008, after over a decade of improving diplomatic relations after the fall of the SSA (Socialist State of Apela). The people of these districts share a similar history, language, and ethnic roots, which was a main reason for their unification.

Our government is a federal republic, as well as a semi-constitutional monarchy, and semi-presidential system. Our president is head of government, and prime minister is head of legislature who is accountable to the legislature. Our legislature is bicameral, and its houses include the National Assembly (lower house) and Federal Assembly (upper house). We also have 2 separate monarchies, the Apelan monarchy and Grecian monarchy. The Grecian Monarchy is a constitutional monarchy, with it holding only ceremonial powers, but the Apelan Monarchy is a semi-constitutional monarchy, holding significant social and influence, plus holds some political powers. Political parties maintain a significant role in the political climate in the country as well.

Our economy is emerging, and is soon to become a developed economy. Grecia is much more developed than its south with GDPpc on par with very developed Western countries, a higher standard of living, and higher income on average. Apela is an emerging economy, though quickly developing, with our economy slowly transforming to a service based economy instead of industrial based economy. Apela has a population much larger than Grecia (23.155 million vs 3.253 million), so they influence this nation much more. (which is a major concern for Grecians about this new nation).

Militarily, our nation is cautious with the communist threat. As Aprosia is to the north, we have to maintain a large enough military to protect us from these threats to our sovereignty. We maintain a large military, with modern equipment to defend us. Conscription is mandatory for 1 year between 18-25, civil service is required for those not able to serve in the military. The Army is the largest section of the military meant to protect Apela from and land invasion as well as now enforcing disputed claims, but the airforce and navy are also significant in size, meant to enforce our airspace and naval territory as well as supporting the army.

I am looking for
1. The further development of our country and history in the Western Isles
2. A disputed territory/naval space between one of our neighbors
3. Developing of foreign involvement in the collapse of the SSA
4. Developed foreign relations with several countries and joining similar minded alliance
5. Development of the current situation involving non-state endorsed persecution of Muslims in NW Grecia
6. Further development of the history of the SSA

I am also creating an overview of my history, so that will be coming soon.

History of Apelan-Grecian Union from Late 19th Century to Today

One of the critical points in the history of the Apelan-Grecian Union is the Great Peace of 1891. War between Grecia and Apela had been off and on for centuries, as Apela and Grecia fought for power in the region. These wars didn't benefit either side, and that became apparent in the Great Apelan-Grecian War of 1862-1863. This war had an extremely high death toll for both nations due to new military equipment and strategies. Even though the war was won by Grecia, no side benefited, and both sides were forced by this conflict to realize the war wouldn't be a long-term positive for either nation, and that peace was the only reasonable option. Relations between the countries continued to improve after this war, and an optimistic attitude in both nation caused the Great Peace, which was the first time an official state of peace existed between the countries since the early 1400s.

After the Great Peace, relations between the countries continued to improve and Apela and Grecia continued to gain power and rise as both countries benefited from the Industrial Revolution. The countries even discussed unification at times, as they shared a common language, history (both were part of the Apereisa Empire), and much more. During 1929, the countries entered the Great Depression with the rest of the world, but wasn't as badly impacted as some other nations in the Western Isles due to a not so large drop in market sentiment and consumer confidence, as a general sense of optimism continued in both nations about the future. This changed in 1932, as the Great Southern Apelan Fire devastated urban areas in the south, burning down large portions of cities. 2 hurricanes also hit Apela that year, including a Category 4. What caused these hurricanes to have such a devastating impact to Apela compared to other countries surrounding Apela was the earlier fire, reducing Apela's infrastructure to prepare for the impact, as well as the king's ineffectiveness preparing for the hurricanes and responding to them dramatically worsened their effect. These disasters plunged Apela into a deeper depression which it couldn't recover from. As Grecia was recovering from the depression and profiting from the outbreak of the Imperial War, Apela was still in a deep depression. This depression lasted from 1929 to 1947/48, and had an major effect on the country as the monarchy was shown as weak and incapable of dealing with crisis, and a stress test was put on Apela's stability and institutions. But even when Apela "got out" to the recession, the rich continued to benefit, while the poor and middle class continued to feel the effects. The rich from both Apela and abroad benefited from the recovery and continued to get richer, while the middle and working classes didn't feel a recovery with still high unemployment, rising wealth inequality, and stagnant wages. The monarchy also didn't do anything to fix this, comfortable with the situation in the country, and their minimal efforts in dealing with the wealth inequality were ineffective. Even as the economy improved, the working/middle classes were left behind. This changed in 1977, since a extremely lopsided economy and extreme levels of wealth inequality caused a depression , which was the final straw for many. Civil unrest had already been high, but this led to it boiling over, as conditions became desperate for much of the country, and the monarchy was as ineffective as ever with dealing with the economic crisis.

As the depression continued, several leftist groups appeared in Apela, and started calling for revolution. This ramped up in the late 70s, as the new king barely improved the situation, and after Aprosia formed a socialist state, these calls for revolution continued to get louder. Aprosia started to fund these groups in the early 80s after organizing their own state, and soon a coup removed the absolute monarch along with the leftist groups they had allied with before in 1984. The new nation, the SSA (Socialist State of Apela) had significant Aprosian influence, but at the end of the day, were controlled by a coalition of Apelan leftist groups from the coup. So, when Aprosia arranged for unification, since they recognized these lands as rightful Aprosian lands, the new government purposely delayed unification using insignificant excuses, as the Apelan population and leaders of these group weren't fond with the idea of unification with Aprosia. Eventually Aprosia gave up with the unification talks, realizing what was going on, and the new SSA shifted away from Aprosia, which cut most of its support, leading to an economic crisis. The new government wasn't able to effectively deal with this crisis, and when support for this government collapsed, they used force to maintain their rule. The SSA's time was limited, and uprising occurred in 1998, with large support for a new democratic government. The socialist government's fate was doomed with an Grecian invasion in the autumn of 1998, liberating Apela.

The new Apelan government had many of the same ideals as Grecia, and shared a common history, language, which led to the creation of the Grecian and Apelan Community in 2003, which grew the countries closer and closer. Freedom of movement was established in 2004, and a common currency in 2005. By 2006, they were a country in everything but name, and they formally united in 2008. Today, the Apelan-Grecian Union is tackling new threats like tension in Islamic communities in NW Grecia, the preservation of the union, and the looming communist force which goes by Aprosia.
