California Bans Sale of New Gasoline Cars by 2035

Postby Kanadorika » Wed Sep 23, 2020 10:14 pm

California’s governor signed an executive order on Wednesday that would ban the sale of gas-only cars within 15 years, in a bid to combat the effects of climate change crisis.

The move comes as the state battles historic wildfires, following a summer of record-high temperatures. “We can’t continue down this path,” Gavin Newsom said.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/california ... 1600882738

New gasoline powered autos will eventually be phased out in the state of California. Given how large California is, this could inevitably force a massive change in the lineup of automobiles sold within the entirety of the United States, as manufacturers must comply with the largest economy within the country to have access to its market.

Granted the push away from fossil fuels towards EVs is happening naturally, this could prove effective in hastening the move.

I don't fully trust electric cars yet, mainly because I still can't get a damn laptop with a battery that lasts more than a year. Hopefully by 2035, things will be different.

Having loved not driving or using a steering wheel at all in months, I would love making public transport (and sidewalks) available and convenient everywhere within reason (we don't need ferries patrolling Point Nemo, or bike lanes in all of Siberia).

Gasoline will run out eventually anyway. High speed underground maglevs and low speed electric trolleybuses (cheaper than most electric vehicles because the battery needn't last long) would be nice.

I despise driving, mostly because people expect me to go over 70 % of the speed limit outside of the city limits.

My $300 laptop made in 2014 and never worked on just died this year (mechanical hard drive fell apart literally). Trolleybusses avoid the batter issue mostly.

Well-intentioned, and certainly admirable, but it poses a lot of questions. Will EVs be affordable compared to gasoline cars by then? Will EV manufacturers be more committed to lowering their carbon footprint as well by then? I'm conflicted, part of me recognizes that extreme action is necessary to fight climate change, but at the same time, I know something like this that sounds great on paper is bound to have a ton of potential drawbacks.

Interesting news nonetheless.

Good Lord, to think Ronald Reagan was once Governor there. I live in NY and Cuomo wouldn't even propose something so.. Off-the-wall. :o I hope some incentive is offered to people who want to trade in their gas-guzzlers for something, anything.. Tax credit? Cash for clunkers?

There already is a Federal tax incentive for electric cars, and IIRC California also has a state tax incentive.

But yeah, bringing back Cash for Clunkers would be nice.

The nice thing about the 2035 limit is that it's so far in the future they don't have to ever meet it.

That's nice to know, actually. Asking motorists to give up gaz-guzzlers with nothing in exchange is a bit of an overreach.

My misgivings about hybrids amounts to a couple of questions.

Are they affordable for the everyman? (I'm not rolling in dough)
Are they maintenance-intensive? (My current beater is constantly in need of repair for some reason or another)

But yeah, bringing back Cash for Clunkers would be nice.

great, by then we'll have massively overshot our emissions targets so it won't really matter, but great

if you're going to try to stop climate change either go all in on preventive measures (i.e., putting something like this in place within the next couple years, along with a host of other massive efforts), or give up and spend the money on palliative care or treatment of symptoms (relocation of communities from fire zones, high-altitude sulfur dioxide spraying, carbon capture), but half-assing one and not doing the other is a recipe for disaster and waste

It's not that big of a deal by European standards. The real question is whether the infrastructure will be able to handle it.

Don't they predict climate change to destroy Earth by like 2030? They're overshooting this by 5 full years. By then it won't even matter.

We need to ban all cars (gas, electric, Flintstones-powered, etc.) and bring back good old horse carriages. Climate change wasn't an issue when those were around, now was it? (It probably was and I just look like a jackass).

Assuming the country isn't enveloped in civil war in 40ish days or whatever, US infrastructure (idk if you mean battery production infrastructure, automakers, or road systems?) isn't going to be the problem so much as the ability of countries like Bolivia and the DRC to sustain the necessary levels of lithium and cobalt production and export (especially given the simultaneous ramp-up of demand in other countries).
