Where are the best geographic locations to build a city?

Postby Occidens Praseodymia » Fri Sep 04, 2020 10:22 am

Geographically, not politically, there are many cities on earth, many in safe area, others in dangerous. But most cities deemed safe typically still have some threats.

The main dangers include earthquakes, floods, bad ground for building, tornados, hurricanes, volcano threats, rising sea levels etc.

A good city location would typically be easily accessible, flat, have good ground to build on, near water (but not too close too the sea), have a good climate, mineral wealth etc.

If I had to choose a place, it would probably be Atyrau, Kazakhstan. It's close to the Caspian Sea, just outside an earthquake prone region, warm climate, semi-arid*, located along a river, mineral wealth (oil, but in my case, I would not use it as a power source, I'd make vaseline and oil for hinges instead) and it's located in central Eurasia and thus good access to the rest of the continents.

But I know many cities are pretty safe, such as New York, Dubai, most cities in the UK and Scandinavia, but they are still not really safe. There probably isn't a perfect place, but what would be the closest?

*Semi-arid is good because if a city is built there with a large amount of trees, it attracts rain and becomes slightly wetter. This has happened in places like Las Vegas and Dubai.

A Valley with a river running through it. They are always the most prosperous, except when they get raided in Fantasy Books.

depends, why do you think the biggest or most prosperous cities are on the coast because places like NY and LA as well as Beijing, Shang Hai or Rotterdam have access to deep water ports and transportation hubs.

For me places like my home town Bryan College Station are in a prime spot no more then 2 hours from places like Dallas and Houston which has major oil and gas business as well as a major container port were not near Earthquake areas, or are in a fire prone area too far for hurricanes or tidal waves and such. plus with a major university in Texas A&M we have a thriving bio-medical industry.

Somewhere on the coast in my opinion, with decent access to ports. A lot of the more prosperous cities are (although not all).

LA is prone to earthquakes, NY's only threat is rising sea levels, East Asia is full of earthquakes and typhoons, Rotterdam is in Holland, need I say more. Dallas and Houston are pretty good, but don't they have tornados?

By "best", do you mean "most likely to become prosperous" or "safest"?

I'm not as active as I used to be (probably active once every 3-7 days) as I'm spending a lot more time on more important things. This has nothing to do with why I'm not as active, but I'm sad because a lot of ideas I thought of but never used in an F7 thread (e.g. the life simulator and make a multiverse) were used. Next time I think of something I should probably use it immediately instead of waiting a few months and having somebody else take it.

That is a good point actually.

Perhaps maybe slightly further inland. There's a certain point it which it might become a bit too isolated, so that's something to bear in mind. It all depends on how capable you are of tackling this sort of thing - Netherlands, which you mentioned, seem to be fighting back well.

Norway
Denmark, specifically Copenhagen

Find a navigable river estuary. Follow the river upstream to the first point you can build a bridge across it. Build your city there.

Chances are if it was such a great place to build a city somebody did it already.

I know it's earthquake prone and everything, but just look at San Francisco's location, it's own little tip of a peninsula in a bay, great place for a city.

Earthquakes are good for cities. They open up neighbourhoods for redevelopment that might otherwise stagnate. You want a modern thriving city constantly reinventing itself - build it in an earthquake zone.

Access to fresh water and trade routes, fertile land, preferably atop a hill. Not really relevant for defense these days but still helps with flooding.

Surrounded by mountains, which are surrounded by a lot of rivers. . This would make it castle like, and very hard for an enemy force to capture.

I have a feeling that being near to a forest will have other advantages as well, can't quite put my finger on it.
