1970s: Global Wrath

-----Current Map-----IC Thread-----

It's 1970. Three years earlier, the Summer of Love rocked the West while two years earlier the Prague Spring shook the East to it's core. Meanwhile non-aligned nations have increasingly been forced to choose a side with the choosing even being forced at gunpoint by foreign powers. The "wrong" choice is often fatal for those involved on the "wrong" side of the power and influence struggle. Foriegn interference is now rife as every nation pushes to get it's slice of the cake, no matter how meager it may be.

Both the USA and USSR dump vast ammounts into weapons and preparations for WW3 under the cover of Détente while both NATO and Warsaw Pact nations attempt to mend relations without provoking the ire of either major superpower. The global economy is on the upswing but it's major reliance on oil might very well doom it. The divides in the world are also ever greater as the technological gap between rich and poor, and East and West deepens.

The world was always a cruel place. But it is especially so now. The decade of the 1970s is shapping up to be a critical one. The balance of power is ever changing, and it's balance is delicate at best. Beneath the surface of materialisim and growing wealth lies the dark side of the world. A side that may very well rear it's head.

The World In 1970---The Major Differences

  • Berlin Undivided---While Germany was divided with the end of WW2 between East and West, Berlin was not divided. It was handed over to the GDR and has become the model socialist city. Berlin is a gateway for western goods to reach the east as well being the main economic and banking hub for companies doing buisness in the Eastern Bloc (not that there are many companies doing buisness in the Eastern Bloc). Despite this all, Berlin is also a major hub for illegal activity and is under constant Soviet scrutiny.
  • The First Oil Crisis---While in our timeline the 1970s are often associated with fuel rationing and the Energy Crisises, in this timeline, the first Energy Crisis came in 1968. After the humilation of several Arab nations at the hands of Israel in 1967 an oil embargo was impossed on the nations that supported Israel. While the embargo ended in 1969 oil is still a volatile resource. Because of this crisis, Eastern European nations (which primarily got their oil from the USSR) where insulated from the oil shock while many major western economies where hit hard by the 1968 Oil Crisis. The following countries/areas will still be recovering from the crisis and will have significantly reduced economic growth as a result of the crisis: Western Europe, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan/ROC, Scandinavia (save for Finland and Norway), the USA, and Canada.
  • Systemic Collapse---The Great Leap Fowards and the Cultural Revolution really didn't go well for China in this timeline. The CCP (Chinese Communist Party) runs an international pariah of a country that is starved, poor, and near rebelion. No mater what the PLA and the Red Guards do, the inherent fact that the CCP and Mao have failed is is clear to all. Rebelion is a constant issue with even the military becoming increassingly disloyal. The CCP and the PRC face an uphill struggle for their existence against reality and the people of China who are ever dissatisfied with the state of their nation.
  • Red Hegemony---The USSR is powerful. Very powerful in fact. It rules Eastern Europe under an iron thumb called the Brezhnev Doctrine. However the technological gap between the East and the West is ever growing. Quality of life in the Eastern Bloc is slowly improving but still is not on par with that of rich capitalist nations like those of Europe. Despite being insulated from the 1968 Oil Crisis, Eastern Bloc nations are still lagging behind their western counterparts in nearly all aspects. While the USSR may be able to subjugate nations with it's massive military, it will never be able to win the hearts and minds of the citizens of the Eastern Bloc.

Point of Divergence

All of the afromentioned changes are applicable to any nation your RP as. However, it you wish to craft your own nation with your own changes to history, here is what you must know. The point of divergence is 1950. Everything before that is exactly as it happened in real life save for Berlin not being divided in this timeline. All major changes stated above are also applicable no matter what.

If you're deciding to RP as a major superpower (USSR, USA, UK, France, Germany, China) you may change who your leader is, some of your policies, etc. But you may not have drastic changes like the USSR becoming Tsarist after Stalin's death. Note that any of the points mentioned in the major changes section are applicable to your nation no matter what.

If you're decide to go with a minor nation, you must follow the three following rules when crafting your nation: [1] No crazed alternate timelines. You may deviate from the real life timeline as long as you keep the afromentioned points from the major changes section; however you may not change the religious, demographic or ethnic makeup of a nation or region without an explicit explination why. [2] You must at all times keep relaity in perspective. As fun as alternate history may be, keep a sense of realisim and authenticity. For example, if you RP as Albania, you can try to create a Greater Albania. But if you decide to do so, don't be suprised when Yugoslavia and Greece steamroll you. Hence, keep an eye on what is realistic and probable even in fake scenarios. And [3], remember that you're still going to be economically reliant on a major power(s).

[1] The words and rullings of the OP and Co-OP are the law. Said decisions are final and will not be overturned without a good reason to do so and a proper argument to back it up.

[2] This is an advanced RP. You will need to create an ORBAT as well as a list of your nation's military equiptment, your nation's major industries, your nation's population trends, and other more advanced information typically not required in many RPs. It will take plenty of diligence and effort to create and aplication and to participated in this RP. So please don't complain when the RP seems to complicated because you where forewarned.

[3] Timing and time progression in the RP will be bassed one the activity of the participants in the RP and is subject to change. If you have any issues with the timing, let me know.

[4] The glorification of atrocities, cromes against humanity, and other horrible things is not allowed in the OOC and is discouraged in the IC. If you're RP-ing as certain nations, you may want to be as discrete about said topics if you must right about them in the IC And remember, not bloody details.

[5] Keep everything PG-13. Mild cursing is allowed in the IC. But in the OOC, keep things respectful and civilized as well as on topic.

[6] You may RP as up to one nation and one factio/terrorist group in this RP. It can be a made up group or an IRL group like the IRA.

[7] The point of divergence is 1950. Anything before that may not be changed unless specifically allowed by OP or the Co-OP. anyhting after 1950 is pretty much open the changes though it must be kept within reality and the changes must also be in accordance with the major changes in the timeline laid out in the previous soilered section.

[8]No godmodding or metagaming. If any of these issues occur, please contact the OP or Co-OP immediately by telegram with the incirminating evidence as well.

[9] All technologies are developed at the same time as IRL. You can introduce them into use earlier than IRL by cutting down the testing period by that will have negative side effects like increased failure rates and possibly higher injury rates too.

[10] Posts must be at a minimum three paragraphs long. If the post has dialouge, the dialouge must have at least two seperate parts spoken by two different people. Images are not mandatory, but are encouraged and if possible, feel free to use them to help convery a point in your posts.

[11] Failure to comply with these rules will result in a three strikes policy. Strike one is a warning, strike two is another warning, and strike three is removal from the RP for being a repeated rule breaker.

Remember to have fun!

How restrictive are you in terms of secessionism? Or for that matter playing as political parties, factions, groups, etc. I ask because I had a few ideas for China given it seems like you are implying they are going to collapse (unless some miracle happens).

I had an idea to reserve this as a contested area (minus Hong Kong, and Macau) forming into an emerging nationstate since the PRC is about to fall apart.

Secessionism all depends on the region. If the region you want to RP as has a distinct cultural identity from the rest of the nation, secession is going to be much easier (yet still relatively messy). If you want to be a secessionist movement, my tip is to ick an area likely to break away in the first place. But in terms of how restrictive I am on it all goes on a case by case basis. If there is good reason for the independence movement, I soo no reaosn for it to occur. But if it is something like a Soviet Republic breaking away, I will say no because of how [1] unlikely that would be and [2] the fact that any such independence movement would be crushed immediately.

Since you brought up China, here are my tips. [1] The CCP is the sole party of China. However, you can be a breakaway faction of the CCP or create your own party. But if you create your own party, note it will be an uphill battle against the CCP because while China is near colapse, for the moment most of the PLA is still on Mao's side (note for the moment). [2] If you want to do a more classical route, Taiwan/ROC is a good way to go since it gives you a stable military, economic and political base to medle in China with. Plus the KMT has name-brand recognition unlike an upstart new party, some small local party, or a CCP splinter group. [3] You could always RP as a KMT splinter in mainland China that is more democratic than Chiang Kai-Shek and Taiwan is at the moment since that too is not far fetched in my opinion.

Really the possibilities are pretty endless when it comes to China. But at the moment, China has not collapsed, yet; it is merely about to.

It's definitelly doable (and I do like the concept). The issue is, Taiwan still hold's the seat China has at the UN. And that may lead to issues in the long run.

This is understandable since Nixon hasn't really done anything to open up a door to China yet (if he is even President). I am guessing its more or so opposition based off holding (albeit titular) the mantle of China than anything ideologically concrete. While you are right about Taiwan holding onto the legal power in reality so long as they don't have proper authority over China economics won't be my concern. I won't claim the mantle of China, but merely be a secessionist region in the tinderbox that is a collapsing nation. The Republic of China out of Taiwan might be able to get some of its claims back by force, but realistically they are going to have to rely heavily on the provinces wanting them back as well.

History of the Nation: Born from the ideals of Pan-Arabism and Arab Socialism, the United Arab Republic in its current incarnation is a union of Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Palestine's West Bank, Yemen and, mostly recently Saudi Arabia.
The history of the current United Arab Republic begins in 1963 following the dissolution of the previous United Arab Republic of Syria and Egypt, when the governments of Syria, Egypt and Iraq signed an agreement forming a reconstituted Federal state. While all constituent states had a high degree of autonomy, the foreign policy and armed forces of the UAR was a unified front.
Following the reformation of the UAR, Egypt's presence in the Yemeni Civil War grew stronger yet against the Saudi-backed Royalists, crushing the Royalist forces in a matter of weeks. Facing enemies on all sides, in 1964 Saudi Arabia demanded that the UAR remove its troops from Yemen or face war. Knowing that they were more than a match for the Saudis, but not wanting to get caught in a protracted war with Saudi Arabia, Nasser contacted the Soviets in order to gain their backing, equipment and advisors. Receiving their backing so that they had a friend in the Middle East, after consulting with their new advisors and with the arrival of their new equipment, the UAR launched a pre-emptive strike against the Saudis, catching them off guard and sending the Saudi Army into a panic reminiscent of the Red Army of 1941. Seeking to push the advantage and remove the last threat to their domination of the Arab world, the UAR Armed forces launched a full-scale invasion of Saudi Arabia at the beginning of August 1964. After massive casualties suffered during the siege of Medina, the UAR Army were marching through the streets of Mecca by New Year's Day of 1965.

Following the flight of the Saudi Royal Family to the United States and the complete destruction of their power in the Arabian peninsula, the UAR officially annexed the territory into their republic. Meanwhile in Jordan, a group of revolutionary Jordanian Army officers titling themselves after the Egyptian 'Free Officers Movement', began plotting to overthrow the Hashemite Dynasty and have a republican Jordan join the UAR. After a failed strike against Israel by Jordanian forces, anti-Hashemite protests began in Amman. As the royal guard began cracking down on the protesters, the Revolutionary officers declared themselves for the protests and requested the support of the UAR to restore order. Agreeing to the request, the UAR joined the revolutionary officers in crushing the royalists and seizing the Royal Family before they could flee across the border to Israel; a fact which was widely publicized across the UAR to discredit the Hashemite cause forever.

Now in 1970, the UAR stands as the hegemonic power of the Arab world and looks to its only potential rivals in the form of Iran and Turkey with fearful eyes that their dream of a unified Arab state may be in danger.
National Challenges: Pan-Arabism - The Unification of the Pan-Arab identity is struggling to gain ground. While not a problem now, should the government become unpopular nationalist groups will be the vanguard of counterrevolution. Reliance on Oil - The epiphany of the double edged sword; Oil makes the otherwise barren Middle East rich, but should the oil prices drop, so will the economic strength of the Arab World. Our Red Friends - Abandoning the principles of non-alignment, Nasser and his Pan-Arabists sought the assistance of the Soviets in the unification of the UAR to great success. Now the Soviets expect our help when they need it.

So how big of a timeline change can we make in the apps? Like could the ideology of minor nations shift pretty drastically still since 1950 if there's room for them to? Or are they pretty static? I'm assuming for example West Germany couldn't go communist whether they want to or not, but what about something still nutty like Third Position in the event the Socialist Reich Party took over?

History of the Nation:

The Man of Steel: Under the leadership of Joseph Stalin, the USSR grew to an international powerhouse after the victory over the Nazis. The establishment of Socialism across Eastern Europe, and the success in keeping Berlin united under the German Democratic Republic gave the Union extra prowess. Reconstruction after the devastating war was swift and successful, causing enmity in the United States of America. By 1948, the so-called Cold War was in full swing.

The Doctors' Plot In 1951, the Soviet authorities started a campaign against Zionism and rootless cosmopolitanism, targeting a series of Zionist conspiracies that came to be known as the Doctors' Plot. The subsequent crackdown against counterrevolutionary agitators and conspirators brought to light some cracks within the Communist Party, most notably casting doubt on former NKVD director Lavrentiy Beria.

The Death of Koba: Joseph Stalin died suddenly on 5 March 1953, under suspicious circumstances. A troika consisting of Vyacheslav Molotov, Georgy Malenkov and Lavrentiy Beria took over leadership of the Soviet Union at first. Continued distrust between the latter and both Malenkov and Molotov, along with suspicious behaviour by Beria during the events of Stalin's death, caused the troika to collapse in June 1953.

The Revisionist Coup: In June 1953, an intervention led by Moscow's Party Secretary Nikita Krushchev and Field Marshal Georgy Zhukov, arrested Lavrentiy Beria. With Malenkov and Molotov turning against Beria due to surfacing evidences of the latter's sexually predatorial crimes and participation in various conspiracies, the former NKVD leader's powerbase collapsed completely. Found guilty of plotting the assassination of Stalin, as well as of various counts of rape, he was executed in December.

However, Krushchev soon turned out to be a threat to the Soviet Union himself. Ingratiating himself with some high functionaries in both the Party and the Armed Forces, in February 1954 the Ukrainian functionary attempted to remove Malenkov from the position of Prime Minister.

At an extraordinary session of the Politburo in February 1954; Molotov, Malenkov, Lazar Kahanovich and Nikolai Bulganin assembled enough votes to force Krushchev to abdicate. When Krushchev called for a new vote in the Central Committee, and tried to call upon his allies in the military, his main ally Marshal Zhukov, decided not to back him at this crucial point. This led to the downfall of the revisionist attempted takeover. Krushchev was arrested and jailed until 1956, when he was released and expelled from the Communist Party.

On 1 March 1954, a new troika was established with Vyacheslav Molotov as General Secretary of the Communist Party, Georgy Malenkov as Chairman of the Council of Ministers (also known as Premier) and Lazar Kaganovich as Minister of Internal Affairs.

Cold War: Under the new collective leadership, the Soviet Union pursued a staunchly Marxist-Leninist approach, defending Socialism with ferocity wherever necessary. Sending aid and military advisors to the DPRK, the Vietnamese freedom fighters, the Cuban revolutionaries and several independence movements in Africa, Moscow was at the forefront of fighting for the liberation of the Third World. Starting in 1963, the USSR furthermore became an active supporter of the new United Arab Republic, in order to support anti-Zionist resistance in the Middle East.

In 1960, Kaganovich rose to the position of Premier, with Malenkov assuming the position of Second Secretary of the CPSU and Interior Minister.

National Challenges (List between 3 and 5 major issue that plague your nation during this time period):

Arms Race: The continued hostility of the United States of America towards the Soviet Union and its allies, requires a constant effort to keep the military up to date. This continues to be a burden on the economy.

Legacy of '68: While globally, the Prague Spring has barely dented the power of the USSR and the Communist ideology, it has shaken Eastern Europe somewhat. Moscow needs to keep a close eye on its allies, in order to ensure that the creeping forces of counterrevolution don't become a major threat.

What is going on with China?: The People's Republic of China is considered an ally to the Soviet Union, and the legacy of Stalin’s close relationship with Mao is still en grained in the collective memory of the Soviet people. The growing instability in China, and rumours of separatists and counterrevolutionaries plotting to destroy the People's Republic have caused great anxiety in Moscow.

History of the Nation:

Johnson Tapes In May of 1966 several tapes of President LBJ were leaked to the media. In these tapes President Johnson could be heard using heavily racist, crude, and offensive language as well as describing other women and acts he had done with some outside of his marriage. These tapes destroyed the image of the President in most of the public’s eye and started a social movement to restore integrity and honor to the government.

Vietnam With the situation looking ever more hopeless and the South’s government increasingly unstable the LBJ administration had already been looking at ways to end Vietnam. However this was hastened by the Johnson Tapes. Seeking a way to salvage his Presidency, LBJ started the withdrawal of American forces from Vietnam in winter of 1966. This process was completed in April of 1967 when the last US official left Hanoi. This move, while supported by most, failed to help boost LBJ and the Democrats as it was clearly portrayed as a political move on President Johnson’s part and as weak by the more staunch War Hawks in Washington.

Rise of Reagan With the oil crisis of the late 1960’s combined with a perception of morale corruption in society and in the LBJ Administration following the Johnson Tapes scandal, an outcry for a morale and conservative leader grew. This movement found its man in the then Governor of California, Ronald Reagan, who had served in that position since being elected for the first time in 1967. Riding this wave of national discontent with LBJ and his liberal politics, Reagan won the 1968 Presidential election in a massive landslide against Vice-President Humphrey on promises of energy independence, returning to the morality of the 1950’s, and increasing the strength of America abroad.

National Challenges (List between 3 and 5 major issue that plague your nation during this time period):
Cold War: Ever since the end of the Second World War the planet has been split between three factions. The first lead by the United States and being staunchly anti-Communist. The second led by the USSR being staunchly Communist. And finally the third being the non-aligned movement that seeks to toe the line between the other two sides of the Cold War.

Oil Crisis: With the oil crisis of the late 1960’s the US economy took a large hit as prices soared. While this crisis is over and the economy is recovering there are still lingering effects from it as well as social unease about foreign dependence on oil.

Red Menace: Much like in the 1950’s a new wave of McCarthyism is sweeping the nation. While much more toned down than before, this harsh backlash on potential communist supporters in all aspects of life has disrupted the lives of average ordinary Americans and stoked fear in the population.

So I’m thinking of having it where, due to the earlier oil crisis etc, the country swings more conservative earlier than 1980 resulting in Reagan actually getting the 1968 Republican Party nomination and then going on to win in a landslide like irl pushing for energy independence and a stronger US foreign policy.

Wasi State wrote:So how big of a timeline change can we make in the apps? Like could the ideology of minor nations shift pretty drastically still since 1950 if there's room for them to? Or are they pretty static? I'm assuming for example West Germany couldn't go communist whether they want to or not, but what about something still nutty like Third Position in the event the Socialist Reich Party took over?

Timeline changes depend on what nation you want to be. Major powers aren't allowed to massively deviate from their IRL timelines save for in certain areas like in terms of the economy. Samller countries are more free to have major ideological shifts since they are [1] less important to the world as a whole, and [2] because it makes the RP more interesting.

West Germany really couldn't go communist because of the USA and the Western Allies not really allowing it. But a more ultra right wing anti-communist nation makes complete sense since as long as it [1] doesn't become Nazi because the USSR would blow an aneurysm over said nation, and [2] it isn't a nation that is against the western allies.

Reagan for president in '68, now this is something I've got to see!

Yeah I was reading up on it last night and IRL his name was thrown out there to be a contender and I think some even tried to draft him like they did in ‘76 where he almost beat President Ford to get the nomination.

Just make sure to explain how Regan managed to get the nomination. And note that depending on how you're crafting the USA, Reagan might still have to contend with the Vietnam War.

Interesting, I'm definitely curious enough to look into seeing what nation I might want to play if I end up apping
