He is of course referring to the dementia patients who are in the final stages of the disease, have become so mentally and physically infirm they're completely dependent on others and are no longer capable of quality of life. Covid is speeding up a process which is horribly protracted by medical intervention, and I know because I've seen it happen.

It's far better to have open discussions about it in the arts as it has a filtering effect to make it more palatable to people, it sublimates it and makes it far less incendiary; as if a truth is left unexpressed then it turns toxic.
