[SUBMITTED] Royal Rage

Postby Daarwyrth » Tue Aug 04, 2020 2:34 pm

This is an issue draft that I had worked on in the past, but never finished. As I am endlessly intrigued by the topic of monarchies, I have decided to pick it up again in a somewhat renewed form. Now, anticipating that options 4 a and b might cause some remarks about player autonomy, I'd like to take issue #1157: Rodney and Julietta as an example that there is precedent in the issue base for @@LEADER@@ to become a monarch. Like in option 5 of that issue, @@LEADER@@ is not assumed to be a monarch, but the option is there should the player want to take it. I believe it can work in a similar fashion for this issue draft :)
EDIT: The issue serves as a form of commentary on the royalty obsession that longstanding republics like the USA experience whenever something grand involving the royals of different countries happen. This article serves as a form of inspiration for the idea, to a certain degree.

[Effect 4] "So, our little playthings are all about royalty these days, eh?" poses your brother, looking down on the people in the streets through the window in your office. "I say we grant them their wish for once. After all, it'll only unpack even better for us," he says, turning to you with a sly grin. I have reworked the first draft to hopefully address the concerns that have been expressed in the GI Discord. I have rewritten the premise a bit and changed options 1 and 3 to be more relevant to the issue as described in the premise.

I also hope the new option 1 addresses the concern as raised by Australian rePublic :) I'd love to know what people think of the new draft!

Unfortunately, I've gotta say that I still agree with Aussie. It just seems unlikely that a country would re-factor their entire system of governance around a phase ( :p ), no matter how long-winded or dramatic said phase may be.

For a country to become a monarchy now would involve major re-factoring, and even if it's just a figurehead, how do you decide who gets to be the monarch? In non-monarchial countries, there isn't any "significant figures" who you can just point to overnight and say "you're the king/queen now".

Consider Australia. (purely because it's the easiest for me to make an example of. Ignore the fact that we aren't a republic.) If we were to become a self-sufficient monarchy tomorrow, with our own royals, how would we decide who gets to be said royals? Making it the current PM would be nepotistic and dumb, and there are near-infinite numbers of other famous people that we could bestow the title onto. Even doing a referendum of the people to decide would be ridiculous - there are just so many historical and famous figures that could be monarchs that it's impossible to choose one to head the ruling family, especially considering that family will then hold power for the rest of, well, eternity!

Alright, so, I have worked your feedback into the newest draft and changed a fair bit about it. Essentially, the main focus of the issue has become how to deal or what to do with the royalty craze that republican nations experience when royal events occur. The "become a monarchy" has become a crazy/silly last option, pretty much the same way it is in issue #1157: Rodney and Julietta.

Feedback and comments on the new draft are welcome!

I think there needs to be a problem caused by the Royalty Rage, rather than the issue framing the Royalty Rage as the problem, seeing as I don't see very much of an issue with Royalty Rage at the moment outside of extreme circumstances. Currently, it seems only extremist republicans would have a problem with this, so I think there needs to be a bit more of a problem for this to be a government issue outside of "some people don't like this thing".

Would you have a suggestion as to how to approach royalty rage causing a problem? Because I'm racking my brain about it but I don't know if the ideas I have will be any good.

I'm not entirely sure - I haven't seen or read about many negative effects of royalty rage. Reading through Altmer's comments on your other draft and the news article they linked, perhaps you could focus on what negative psychological effects this obsession has on people? While general anxiety and irresponsibility might not be great topics, maybe fans stalking the royals, or an extreme form of celebrity worship that conflicts with your nation's view (i.e. a celebrity that has opposing views, causing dissent). Both of those peel away from your current narrative, but (again) it feels as of right now there's no actual problem.

Hmm, the bit about a celebrity or another influential person causing problems sounds like an interesting angle to use in approaching this issue. I'll see if I can construct a premise around that, as that sounds like a good idea!

I have finally been able to produce a new draft, with (hopefully) a new premise that offers an actual problem around the topic of 'royalty craze'. I have adapted the first two options to fit the new premise, and tweaked options 3, 4a and 4b accordingly. As such, I would love to know what people think of this new version of the draft! :)

New draft is up with some alterations made to the effect lines, in light of feedback I had received on them in the GI Discord! As such, any new feedback on the whole would be more than welcome :)

I'm really sorry that I keep critiquing your tenses and nitpicking wording, haha! I feel this might read better as

"many of your citizens have been harboring a dormant yet intense fascination with royalty, which burst open like a dam upon the arrival of the royal pair. During a private meeting with you in your office, the noble couple has raised concerns about the blatant intrusions of privacy."

Your draft already frames the meeting as private, thus the formal -> private change. And I feel "intrusions of privacy" would sum up the problem better than "their lack of privacy", which just implies there's a problem with something like their accommodations (sorry, there's a better word there - I just can't seem to grasp it). Also, it implies previous fiascos already, which you could perhaps play on instead. The rest are just wording changes, and I'd like to note "burst open like a dam" just feels like flourish-ey writing - unless this is a reference I'm missing, I don't really like the placement of that comparison.

Daarwyrth wrote:whispers a shaking, sleep-deprived Princess Harriet

I like "quivers a trembling Princess Harriet, as she tightly grips her husband's arm."

Daarwyrth wrote: she bursts into tears in the arms of her husband, who continues for her

I'd also suggest maybe changing this to "she begins to sob and buries her face in her husband's shoulder, as he continues for her." Might sound a bit smoother and forgoes the repetition of "arm" should you choose to take my above suggestion. Well-done and thank you for trying out a dual-speaker option though :p

Daarwyrth wrote:Our security can't cope with this mad furor of your citizens anymore.

Perhaps you should replace "Our security" with "we", since the problem isn't really with their security, and they're the ones being harassed.

Daarwyrth wrote:suddenly screams a @@MAN@@ with @@HIS@@ face pressed to the window of your office

This is a personal writing style thing again, but you mention "pressed to the window" twice. A slightly altered description - "who appears in the window of your office" perhaps, though the transition from "suddenly screams a @@MAN@@ is kinda awkward anyway, might work better. Maybe change that to "screams a @@MAN@@ who suddenly appears in the window of your office"?

Looking better and better!

Daarwyrth wrote: Yet as it turned out, many of your citizens have been harbouring a dormant yet intense fascination with royalty

I think the transition at the beginning of this sentence is a bit confusing. I think "However, it turns out many..." would probably work better. Also, maybe a different word for "royalty" would make sense here, seeing as their obsession is with the couple moreso than actual royalty.

Daarwyrth wrote:"Last night, I was about to take a bath when I saw them. I saw their faces pressed to the window.

You can probably combine these sentences into "Last night, I was about to take a bath when I saw their faces pressed against the window!"

Daarwyrth wrote: or the Immortal Queen will hear of our displeasure with you

"Displeasure with you" is kind of a weird phrase. "hear of this" or something similar might work better, but in general if you can find a way to take out the "with you" or word it in a less verbose way that'd be nicer.

Daarwyrth wrote:, held up by a wall of jubilantly screaming people

While a fun detail, I don't know if you can actually see the "wall of jubiliantly screaming people". You can still keep it, though I think maybe you could do better. If you do keep it, maybe change "wall" to something like a "pillar" or "pile"? Those might not be the right words, but you get my point.

Daarwyrth wrote:after the royal couple had been escorted out of your office.

"had been" -> "has been" here, I think.

In general, I think you're still a bit flowery with your language, which is causing a few tense mix-ups and strange discrepancies in your writing. I think as you finish implementing changes, a few read throughs of the sentences around the edit wouldn't go amiss. Looking good though, keep it up!

I changed the sentence to fit more with the royalty craze theme again. As to the "however" bit, my professors at uni always express their annoyance at people using 'however' when there is no contradiction in the sentence. The way the sentenced flowed, there wasn't a contradiction, and so, "however" wouldn't have been correct there. They tell us 'yet' is always a safer bet :)

Westinor wrote:You can probably combine these sentences into "Last night, I was about to take a bath when I saw their faces pressed against the window!"

Done! The intent there was to convey the Princess' distraught state, in the sense that she spoke in static sentences. However, this way it's more succinct.

Westinor wrote:"Displeasure with you" is kind of a weird phrase. "hear of this" or something similar might work better, but in general if you can find a way to take out the "with you" or word it in a less verbose way that'd be nicer.

While I changed it to be less wordy, according to the Cambridge dictionary expressing displeasure with something/something should be correct. Note the example "politicians have expressed their displeasure with the decision".

"Pyramid of people" should capture the intended image better! :)

Westinor wrote:"had been" -> "has been" here, I think.

I changed it to "had left". "Has been" wouldn't be correct here, as the Present Perfect Continuous signifies that an action has started in the past and is still continuing. The intent of the sentence is to convey that the couple was already escorted out when the speaker asked his question.

With all that said, new draft is up with several of the changes you proposed implemented! Hopefully the language will appear less flowery now :)

That makes sense, mistake on my part, mostly due to my style of diction. I like to use "however" as a transition even if the contradiction is not obviously clear when I speak or write. A better suggestion probably would've been just removing the "as" and changing "turned" to "turns". In any case, the new rendition of the description is extremely wordy. Could you maybe revert it, or reword it in a way so that it doesn't explain the fascination with royalty, but perhaps exhibits actions that imply this?

I understand that it's grammatically correct, but I meant that there were better ways to word that, since it didn't sound very natural in that case to me. Should've mentioned "here" in my comments.

Also my mistake, was switching some things around when I wrote this section. Can the current rendition be switched from "had left" -> "exits"? It changes the meaning slightly, but it's worded better that way.

The current form is indeed less wordy, and conveys the same intent :)

My personal preference goes to "had been escorted out of your office", but I agree that "had exited" is much more succinct, and so have opted for that one :)

As such, new draft is up!

I'll see if I can come up with something, but if not, I'll leave it at this. Thank you for all your feedback though! It was a huge help :)

Actually, hold on. I think it's fine, considering you detail it in the first option.
Stay safe, be kind, and have a great day! :)

Yeah, I was thinking the same, hence why I wasn't sure how to approach it in more detail in the premise, since option 1 holds a specific action already, so I'll keep it as it is :)

Any new thoughts or comments on where the issue draft is at, now? :)

Option 3 is a good ending point for the issue, so personally I'd drop Option 4.

You have to wonder though why these royals are relying on you to provide their security and privacy. Most royals tend to see to these things themselves, and the issue is more about what level of security they're allowed to bring into your nation.

I have added a line into the premise, that hopefully addresses the point you make about the security and privacy. The idea is that the intrusions from the royalty crazed citizens is so high, that the royals' security is no longer adequate enough to cope with the situation alone, and so they ask for help from @@NAME@@.

Also, personally I'd really love to keep option 4 in, as I think it makes sense as a "crazy" fourth option here :) it would also be nice to have an additional acquisition point for the monarchy policy, I think. There are only 2 issues in the whole base that can give a player the monarchy policy, so it is my hope this issue could add one more!
