UK Politics Thread XIII: The Brexit Ship Departs

“This thread is just a place for foreigners who hate Britain and self-hating British lefties to shit all over the UK.”
― Old Tyrannia

-

A gray day, and the gulls are gone.
Visor of mist o'er the sun is drawn.
The cordage creaks and the sails all strain,
The deck is drenched with the rushing rain,
The waves leap strong at the struggling keel,
And the ship rides madly with plunge and reel.
But the sailors shout as they haul away,
And merrily sing, for it's naught care they
For the wind that screams on the lee,
Or a gray day out at sea.

On a more serious note, polling has now indicated that the Tories and Labour are tied.

Opinium's poll is unusually high for Labour, we need way more data before we can confidently say that they're now tied.

the fact of the matter is that kier starmer would already be prime minister with 400 seats if we had listened to the enlightened centrists and shot jeremy corbyn out of a cannon (with a parachute of course) to libya and the sooner the labour left stops denying this and buy the damn cannon the better
ask moderation about reading serious moderation candidates TGs without telling them about it until afterwards and/or apparently refusing to confirm/deny the exact timeline of TG reading ~~~ i hope you never sent any of the recent mods or the ones that got really close anything personal!

We've had the snooper's charter, now there's the Nimby/road rage/Karen charter

I don't envy the policeman who is tasked with sifting through the videos; having to sit through things titled 'Crazy bikers create chaos in built-up area!!1!' only to realise that it's yet another video showing a couple of motorcyclists conducting some perfectly reasonable & legitimate filtering.

Back in the early 2000s I spent a lot of time cataloguing grey literature with titles like Further Education 2020: A Vision, Britain 2020: A Vision, Youth Work 2020: A Vision. Pretty much every quango, ngo, charity, government department, and lobbying group was setting out its blue sky thinking of what their area of interest was going to be like in the future, and to my amusement they all hit on the same play on words for the title - 2020 vision, geddit. Funny how blue sky thinkers run on the same fixed track.

I rather wish I'd kept some of them to laugh at how different 2020 has actually turned out.

I think you'd just end up hugging your knees cowering in the corner because of the tidal wave of shit you'd need to grasp at once: 9/11, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, terror attacks, memes, social media, smartphones, climate change, Brexit, Trump, Coronavirus, social distancing, everyone wearing masks, the recession, the deaths of various celebrities...

Ah, that new thread smell.

Of course, we must debate the biggest issues of them all. Like, say, should Greggs be nationalised?

Conserative Morality wrote:"It's not time yet" is a tactic used by reactionaries in every era. "It's not time for democracy, it's not time for capitalism, it's not time for emancipation." Of course it's not time. It's never time, not on its own. You make it time. If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. If the fields aren't furrowed, plow them. If the iron is not hot, make it so. If society is not ready, change it.

I think it's time to seize the means of sausage rolls and organise Greggs into worker co-ops ;)

In response Wilson wrote that he did not dispute that the deficit – as estimated within the UK model – is higher than that in other small countries which Scotland would wish to emulate under independence.

But he added: “The GERS assessment reflects a structural problem with the UK: it is one of the most unequal countries in the developed world. Every region and nation outside the southeast and east runs a large deficit on this measure.

“This is not cause for celebration but a clear sign that the UK is not working for most of the country.”
