I don't trust Elon Musk to finish his latest very crazy project, but I think having an implant to speed up the thinky think would be pretty neat.

There's not even research pressure towards self-aware AI.
People only want an artificial intelligence to solve very complicated but also niche problems for them. Why would a physicist concerned with cosmology waste precious AI resources on a machine that's also a great conversationalist? Specialization saves us again!

And also why anyone would waste so much effort and resources on developing not only an AI, but one capable of self-awareness, to put in control of nuclear weapons would also be beyond me.
