Winter, 1909.
United Kingdom

One misty morning, you weak up to the sound of your ratling windows. A magnificent, white owl is standing outside, holding a small letter in its beak. As you walk closer, it waits patiently for the window to open, at which point it lets go of the latter, looks at you inquisitively for a few seconds, perhaps to make sure he got the right person, and then flies away.

Whats the meaning of this?

The stamp on the letter depicts an old lady in a pointy hat brewing something in a claudron.
Would this have anything to do with that strange dream you had one night. It was a full moon, and you got the sudden idea to play a witch, got on your mothers's broom and to you surprise, begun floating midair. The brew flew you out the window and rose above the clouds. The stars glimmering above, the city sleeping below, smoke rising from the forest of chimneys, rooftop windows going dark one by one. It was exciting, and cold, and dizzying. It wasn't long before you lost your balance and plummeted downwards, crashing into the churchtower on the other side of town. It felt quite real... but after knocking over several gargoyels and breaking through the stained glass, you awoke in your bed, thinking to yourself:
"What a dream"

You open the letter. It reads:

Dear Magically Gifted

Your application to Arcwald School of Spellcasting and Enchanting has been denied. Your lineage is not deemed sufficiently pure for safe use of magic. Please keep in mind that the statute of secrecy still applies to you, and you are not to use any kind of magic outside of the wizarding districts. You are also prohibited from using any kind of magic within the wizarding districts, since you lack the qualifications from any certified wizarding institute.

Consequently, you are hereby prohibited from using any and all magic under any and all circumstances.
This includes: spellcasting (all schools (especially elemental magic)), mixing of potions, enchantment, flying, making prophecies, breeding magical creatures.

This decision is final and irreversible.

College Greymore is a wizard school roleplay set in the last years of the Belle Epoque.

There are light rules/mechanics accompanying the game, but no advanced knowledge is required.

Some clarification on some stats.

Heart


A strong heart means strength, courage and determination.
Your heart will help you push, pull, carry, slash and stab, stand firm in the face of danger and weather the storm. Your health = your heart x 3, your inventory space heart x 6.


Wit


A strong mind means reason, intuition and mental prowess.
Your Wit will help you think, study, analyze, interpret, memorise, calculate, craft, brew and translate. Your knowledge cap = Wit. Wit also contributes to max spirit.


Hex


A strong magical ability translates to the amount of magical essence flowing in your veins.
Your Hex will help you practice, fly and cast spells, resist magic and increase the volume of magic you can perform before collapsing from exhaustion.


Haste


Haste means speed, agility and precision.
Your haste will help you run, climb, dodge, react in time, take the initiative and outmaneuver your opponents.


Veils


Veils means awareness, trickery and skulldoggery.
Your Veils will help you observe, evesdrop, deceive, sneak, hide, pick locks, cheat and blend in with a crowd.

Health


HEALTH POINTS - HP for sort. You start with Max health points, which is 3* Hearts Stat. At 0 HP, you may no longer take any actions and if bleeding, will go into negative health. If your character does not receive any help, or if your character is injured by additional attacks and reaches negative health equal to or greater then max health in absolute value, he or she is dead, and there is no way to bring them back alive.


Magical Flux


MANA & ARCANE POWER - Mana is short for magic energy, which is equal to Hex*3. Hex stands a wizard's understanding of magic and the flux of magical essence in his or her veins. At the start of any encounter, you will have as much Mana at your disposal as your Hex!

For every 5 different types of spells you have casted in your lifetime, you gain +1 Hex.


Knowledge


KNOWLEDGE - The spells and alchemy recipes you have in your mind. These you can cast any time without having to refer to a book, as long as you have a wand and the mana required. Knowledge also includes knowledge of the magical word that might help you avoid dangers. Knowledge is also required to pass school tests and such. Your Wits score limits the amount of knowledge in your mind. 5 + Wits = Total knowledge cap. You can use it to store spells, alcemical recipes or information learned from books or classes.


Spirit


SPIRIT & MAX SPIRIT - Your characters happiness, willpower andd physical energy, gained from eating, resting and having fun. Equals Wits + Haste + Veils by default. Reaching 0 spirit leaves your character weak and exhausted. Non-destructive cast spells typically destroy your opponent's spirit, rather then health. Your ability to cast spells and past tests is impacted by spirit.


Joy

Joy and Spirit have been merged, no longer relevant.

JOY - Your character's overall Happiness. Lost when studying, gained when playing and eating sweets. Low levels Joy can cause crippling depression (which in turn can make your character more inclined to join the forces of darkness).


Items


ITEMS - The stuff you carry around. You have Hearts * 6 Inventory spaces (as visible on your character page)


Silver Shillings


SILVER - Silver coins are the unified currency of the realm. The more you have, the more you can buy. They can be exchanged for Gold Pounds (7 Shillings eaach) or copper pennies (get 5 / shilling).


Corruption


CORRUPTION - The influence of evil upon your character. Difficult to get rid of. Gives you destructive magic extra power, but your healing spells become less efficient. Not to mention, corruption will gradually consume your mind, turning you into a tool of the forces of evil.


9 points to spend in on each of the 5 stats, at least 1 point in each (or else your character will automatically fail all relevant tests).

If poor, 2d6 starting copper pennies (5 pennies = 1 shillings).
If neither poor or wealthy, 2d6 starting silver shillings.
If rich, 2d6 starting gold pounds (= 7 shillings).

From the following list choose:
3 areas of talent in which you get a + to your roll.
2 areas of drawback in which you get a - to your roll.

Ss part of the wizarding education act of 1912, all tuition fees and travel costs to and from the college are covered by the ministry of magic. Your attendance at our school will come at no expense to you or your family.

If you wish to attend our school, please arrive at Edinborogh station by 9 o clock in the morning. The Greywood express departs from platform -7. We are very much looking forward to your attendance.

Bio:Talinus was born into a large and poor wizard family. Growing up the youngest of five children he knew what it was like to struggle, eating scraps and surviving in a rapidly industrializing and changing world. He doesn't know it, but his father was disgraced from the wizarding world and forced to move to America some time ago, where he fell in love with a non-magical woman and started a family in Newport. Because of this the Jorthars are sneered at in the magical community and considered lower class amongst wizards and witches. Talinus doesn't know why he's hated by the upperclassmen of the wizarding community and doesn't care. When he got his letter he wasn't even excited and protested but his parents told him this was an opportunity and that he had to go. Not particularly excited about trading his friends and life in America for a life dealing with elitists and rules he packed his few meager belongings and left to begin his education at College Greymore, unaware of the perils and adventure that awaited him.

Would you be interested in roll20 sessions or just stick to NS?
Also, one of your secondary attributes has a + on the same stat as primary. I'm okay with it, I'm even okay with having 2x the same secondary attribute, although it is recommended to have a + in as many areas as possible. By default, your character has 1 in each stat, which gives 1d6 for checks, with 16% chance of success.
Additional traits can be anything you'd like. I'll give it some mechanical implications.
I also recommend adding fears as additional traits to give your character more flavor.

Noted I already changed the trait once I took a closer look :)
I think people would be more comfortable with NS and the game would get more attention that way, but roll20 does sound interesting, but for now I think it's better to stick with NS .

Oh I know. An older student is always an interesting dynamic to play.

I intended Magically Twisted to mean that to a certain extent his Hex moves beyond his control, his fluxing enchantment causing spells to strike with greater lethality than intended, or killing intent instead of disarming. Tainted would mean that he struggles with 'light' magic, while obviously being distrusted by those professors and others who stick to more pure forms of magic. Both tied to his fits which come from an... interesting source.

None of his family have any magical heritage, not that Arthur knows anything about his family. He was always an odd boy and nobody ever looked at him twice when deciding which orphan to adopt. He is a pathological liar and a thief (though he's never been caught). He is extremely curious about the magical world and all the different branches of magic he can learn, but he's not as powerful magically as he thinks he is (he's only average, but he's never met another wizard so think's he's powerful), and he would hesitate to put himself in the slightest danger, even for an astronomical reward.
