PVP Rule Out Pres. Election 'Boycott'

Ruud Beuse, the leader of the largest opposition group in parliament, the Pomeranian People’s Party (PVP), has ruled out his party 'boycotting' this November's presidential election. Earlier this year, Beuse had called for the election to be postponed by 6 months due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, a government minister ruled out the idea and stated the election would go ahead as scheduled. This led to speculation that the right-wing party was considering a 'boycott' of the election.

That speculation was put to rest today when Beuse confirmed that his party would contest the election. Speaking to a socially-distanced parliament, the PVP leader said, "If this election is to happen, then it is important that voters have the choice of a real alternative." Beuse noted, however, the rising number of cases in the country meant that the election could land right in the midst of a second wave.

"This government is not being reckless," responded Prime Minister Dirk Borst, "the date of the presidential election is fixed by law and, pandemic or not, it is important the people's voice be heard." The prime minister also reassured parliament that "appropriate measures" had been taken, including social distancing, hand sanitizer, and compulsory wearing of masks. He added, "This election is actually one of the reasons people need to follow the restrictions: so that we can continue to freely exercise our rights."

Following Beuse's comments, PVP secretary-general Tian van Nuil, batted off questions from journalists asking who the PVP candidate would be. “Our party has a process to follow for choosing a candidate," said van Nuil, "that is my focus, not the potential candidates themselves." Van Nuil is himself considered a front-runner for the PVP nomination which will be decided by the party's approximately 25.000 members sometime next month.

Pomeronians are set to elect their largely ceremonial figurehead president over two rounds, with the first taking place on 3 November and a second taking place 2 weeks later if no candidate secures a majority of the vote in the first round. Incumbent President of Pomeron, Diederik Boer, is eligible for re-election and is standing for a second term of 5 years. Opinion polling projects, any dramatic upsets aside, Boer is favoured to win in November.

Nation Marks Bicentennial Despite COVID

President Carlos Vega leads the nation today in celebrating its bicentennial, marking 200 years since Entre Rios became an independent republic. However, celebrations will be overshadowed and dampened by the COVID-19 pandemic which, since the end of lockdown in May, has seen cases begin to rapidly rise.

Originally millions were expected to join public festivities but now it's expected most will watch from the safety and comfort of their own homes. The Grand Parade through the capital, Montevideo, will go ahead as scheduled albeit with a reduced itinerary and with social distancing among the participants. Attendance is also limited to official invitees who must stick to strict areas and guidelines.

Festivities were initiated at the mouth of the Yaguarón River, where daylight first hits the country, and will continue in a chain across the nation throughout the day, followed by public and private fireworks displays throughout the night. A large fireworks display on the seafront of the nation's capital will be televised due to public attendance being called off altogether.

Roads are also expected to be busy as many families head to beaches, mountains, and national parks to spend time with their families; though many will be foregoing the traditional asado, a type of socialized barbecue.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, many festivities have been scaled back or even cancelled, including all celebrations in the nation's oldest European settlement of Colonia where cases are rapidly rising since lockdown restrictions eased. A 2,000-strong Independence Day naturalization ceremony has also been cancelled.

An additional public holiday has been declared for the occasion, with most workers having Monday and Tuesday off to celebrate the historic date. The President has urged people to "celebrate our nation, its history and its future" by going out and enjoying themselves, albeit responsibly; though some have decried the move as reckless. The lockdown from March through May has severely impacted the economy, and it is hope the extra long Independence Day weekend will get people out spending in bars, restaurants, and shops.

BREAKING: Smith calls election for 16 Nov

Prime Minister Dean Smith has confirmed Monday 16 November as the date of the country's long-expected general election.

Speaking to the media shortly after meeting with the Governor-General, Smith declared Neragua had a "once in a lifetime decision" to make over who governs the country amid the ongoing COVID–19 pandemic and its social and economic fallout. His centre-right National Party has been widely praised at home for its handling of the pandemic and is currently polling at near record highs. This will be Smith's first election as leader of the National Party after he ousted predecessor Charlotte Alban 2 years ago.

The news will not be welcome in the centre-left Labour Party headquarters which saw its support nosedive earlier in the year. Leader Lyn Williams was widely regarded to have "misjudged the public mood" when she criticised Smith's government for the lockdown and economic stimulus package. It was rumoured the party's national executive had been hoping for an election early next year to afford them time to find a new leader.

Politics pundits expected the prime minister to call the election some months ago, with sources within the National Party pinning 21 September as a possible date. The delay may be a telltale sign of the leadership's discomfort in calling an election mid-pandemic. The currently scheduled 6-week campaign is longer than the usual 4 or 5 week campaign due to Remembrance Sunday falling on 8 November this year.

It's expected the parties will formally set out their election platforms in the coming days.

Election 2020: Smith wins 'historic' landslide

Prime Minister Dean Smith has won an 'historic' landslide election, securing a record fifth term in government for his centre-right National Party. With all but a handful of expansive rural seats reporting, Smith looks set to achieve the biggest election victory in almost 40 years.

The result is doubtless a vindication of Smith's strategy in handling the country's coronavirus outbreak and the subsequent hit to the economy.

It was a crushing defeat for the opposition Labour Party, which suffered one of its worst ever defeats. Its leader, Lyn Williams, announced that she would step down. Once hailed Labour's best chance for electoral success, a series of political missteps and PR blunders saw her support stagnate and her centre-left party fall behind in the polls. Last night saw swathes of Labour's traditional seats in the northern "rust belt" go blue – many for the first time ever.

The night was arguably worse for the populist Reform Party, which is set to lose all of its seats as the Nats sweep the board in the southern provinces. Firebrand leader, Lloyd Owen, who was a fierce critic of the national lockdown and other efforts to curtail Covid, remained locked up in his party headquarters as projections showed him losing his seat by a sizeable majority.

By Tuesday morning, with 223 of the 235 seats officially announced, the National Party had secured 146 seats in the House of Assembly, to the Labour Party's 78 seats. The remaining rural seats are all expected to return National MPs as Smith's "blue wave" rolls on. It gives the Prime Minister a large majority in the House and paves the way for his bold 'New Dawn' economic plans to pull the nation out of its sharpest economic decline on record.

Smith is expected to make a victory speech sometime on Tuesday morning before heading to the capital where the Governor-General will ask him for a second time to form a government.

Vinícius Garcia becomes President of Santa Thereza

Vinícius Garcia became the youngest ever-elected president in Santa Therezan history. After the election results were broadcasted live during the afternoon of 15th of January, protests erupted at the Palace of the Upland in Campinas. The building's armed battalion clashed with civilians outside in the main junction, where so far 23 injuries were reported. Garcia, member of the Tupi Party, defeated Alejandro Chal's Trabalhadores Party with over 58% of the votes.

Although the Electoral Tribune announced the majority in the morning, civil unrest was already rampant throughout the nation. Therezan political stability is, while at an all time high, fluctuating ever since the passing of Antero Silvestre, who was replaced by Jose Alvaro. Garcia will be the seventh president of the Republic since the abolishment of the Fifth Institutional Act of 1968 in 1985. Santa Thereza has been a republic for only just 35 years, and by now an envoy of the South American region and benchmark leadership to other Latino nations.

Garcia's inauguration is set to take place on the 22nd of January, in the Campinas Cultural Hall, followed by a motorcade across the capital while following ongoing Covid-19 restrictions. Son of the renowned political family Garcia Zanella, Garcia was one of the earliest stockbrokers in the country, soon after graduating in the 1970's. Active during the dictatorship Era and serving in the Civil Army, Garcia was arrested by the Government and accused of opposing the regime. He was only released in 1983, after serving 7 years in State Penitentiary.

The Tupi Party have prioritised a lot of reforms in military spending and the expansion of the Therezan market in the globe. Garcia was the party's lead advocate in the vote for the creation of the Truth Committee, who investigate human rights abuses during the dictatorship. The Academy of Portuguese Letters had Garcia as president during the 1990's before he entered politics. Many educators and teachers are excited to see Garcia in office, as his literary and economic background could provide Therezan education some support during 2021.

Around 15000 Rio Cana citizens have forcible overwhelmed four border patrol guards that were checking the Rio Cana border with Aurea. This happened at the foot of Sierra Plata Verde which is located in a remote jungle location in the SW of Rio Cana by the Aurean border. The four border guards say the 15000 crossed illegally into Aurea where it is believed they quickly scattered in order not to be apprehended by Aurean border guards. It is expected that at least half of those illegals will remain in Aurea while the rest travel on to Calimera, Entre Rios and possibly Neragua. When asked how 15000 people traveling all together to this remote border crossing could be overlooked in the first place, authorities said they were looking into it.

Government divided over migrant crisis

The government of Prime Minister Marco Basurto is said to be divided over how to address the migrant crisis unfolding at the northern border with Rio Cana. The center-right Social Democratic Party of Mr. Basurto wants to rapidly increase border patrols and security in the area -- which has been officially closed since 2019 -- while the centrist parties his minority government relies on for support are said to prefer a "humanitarian" approach.

Within the last few days, up to 15.000 migrants have illegally crossed into the northern Aurea from Rio Cana. While the majority have been caught and detained at processing centers, a substantial number has evaded detection.

The conservative wing of Mr. Basurto's SDP as well as the populist and nationalist parties in parliament say that the migrants are an economic burden, a security risk and during the pandemic, a health risk also and have called for immediate action from the prime minister.

However, the centrist and especially left-wing parties in parliament, while agreeing the migrants present a potential COVID-19 health threat, say they are also concerned about the potential for exploitation and crime as well as stability in Aurea's northern neighbor.

Speaking to TVA Prime Minister Basurto said, "This is a desperate situation that needs due consideration and response. We will make announcements on Monday regarding this. People should not worry, however."

"Miracle of Monteverde" comes undone
as COVID cases soar

SAN FRANCISCO — Monteverde, once the envy of South America for its low numbers of infections, transmissions, and fatalities during the COVID-19 pandemic, has seen cases soar in recent weeks. The so called "Rio Cana strain" is thought to have first arrived in the country 2 weeks ago and has since seen an explosion in numbers infected, helped in part by the government's refusal to lockdown the country.

Bars, restaurants, cinemas, and shopping malls are as busy as ever, with very few wearing masks. Despite the increasing numbers, the government of President Jorge Santiago Solís has refused to instigate a national lockdown. Speaking on Sunday the President said, "We cannot be held hostage to a virus." Though he reminded people to maintain social distancing where possible.

It marks an almost total U-turn from last year when Monteverde was one of the first South American nations to instigate a complete national lockdown, including border closures. Critics of the President accuse him of not wanting the first national lockdown to be seen as a failure in an election year.

The opposition has increasingly criticized the President for "lacking a plan" and have accused him of not caring about how many die. "The President has shown a reckless disregard for people's lives," said Congresswoman Alessandra Ortiz Cortez who also doubts there ever was a miracle of Monteverde, "There is no mass vaccination plan. There is no clarity on numbers of infected or numbers who have died. [President Santiago] is hiding the truth from the nation."

A spokesperson for the president dismissed the criticism and accused opposition parties of "spreading conspiracy theories and disinformation". The spokesperson restated there would be no national lockdown saying, "Social isolation and economic suicide will kill more in the long run."

Despite weeks of discussion and announcements, there has so far been no update on any mass vaccination program—or even if any vaccines have been ordered. President Santiago has been condemned by science groups in the past for propagating "anti-vaxxer" theories, including the widely debunked claim that the MMR vaccine can cause autism. "None of my kids have had a single vaccine nor will they," he boasted in 2013. It is not the first time Santiago has been accused of being "anti-science," being a prominent skeptic of climate change.

Official government figures—which are often delayed and out of date—stated over 3,000 Monteverdeans have died as a result of COVID-19. However, independent sources, including the World Health Organization, estimate almost 4,500 COVID-19 deaths in Monteverde.

The government has signed an agreement with the Russians on vaccinating everyone in Rio with the Sputnik 5 vaccine. Around 70% of the vaccine will be imported from Russia while 30% will be manufactured in Rio Cana under license by the private company "Vacunas Tropicales". Currently Vacunas Tropicales is retooling part of there production line in order to produce the Sputnik 5. All the injections will be produced locally by private company "Agujas-Med". Both are subsidiary of Rodriguez Industries SA.

In other news, the government has prohibited Rio Cana citizen currently in Aurea from re-entering Rio Cana. Only way for these citizens to re-enter Rio Cana will be if they enter via third nations. And they must bring a certificate of health which shows that they are free of the Virus. The certificate must be no more then four days old.

Lockdown extended, opposition unconvinced

SAN FRANCISCO — President Jorge Santiago Solís has announced a 30-day extension to the current national lockdown, citing concerns over COVID. However, the announcement has been criticized by opposition parties who believe the pandemic is a convenient cover story for an increasingly autocratic regime to seize power.

Announcing the lockdown extension, President Santiago—who opposed any lockdown just 6 weeks ago—appeared to contradict his own medical advisers when he said there was no sign the virus had abated and that only a longer lockdown was needed to shutdown spread of the virus. On Wednesday a government spokesperson said that the lockdown was beginning to take effect with the number of new hospital admissions levelling.

In a complete U-turn from the president—who has long been accused of "lacking a plan" over COVID—the current lockdown was put in place on February 16 and has been one of the severest in the world, let alone the region. Everything from schools to businesses to banks have been ordered to close immediately. Only "essential businesses" have been allowed to remain open and have been forced to do so under extended hours so that customers do not crowd. Millions faced unemployment overnight and, despite government promises, no assistance or relief has been provided. The government says it is "weighing up the options." The government had previously said it would not commit "economic suicide" with a national lockdown.

Opposition parties, however, are crying foul and claiming the lockdown is a poorly disguised cover story for Santiago consolidate his power as president. They cite the populist "strongman" Santiago's profound constitutional changes: the Supreme Court has been packed with sympathetic judges, term limits on the presidency have been removed, and congressional oversight committees have faced pushback and misdirection. A spokesperson for the president has dismissed opposition claims, accusing their leaders of "spreading conspiracy theories and disinformation."

Indigenous rights campaigners clash with police


Police and indigenous rights campaigners have violently clashed in the rural district of Sipaliwini over plans by developers to build a new eco-tourism resort. Police in riot gear arrested 21 protestors as they tried to disperse what they termed "an illegal gathering" under COVID-19 regulations.

The campaigners were at a site earmarked for development by multi-billion dollar Belgium-based GVG Consortium, which has petitioned the national government for almost 5 years to allow it to build a 5-star eco-friendly resort. The company insists it will create hundreds of jobs in the area as well as generate money for the local economy and publicise the environment. It has also ensured regulators that it will abide by strict environmental standards and preserve the forest.

However, local indigenous peoples oppose the vacation giant being allowed to build the site. They claim that not only will the forest be irreversibly damaged by the development but that it is also on land explicitly preserved for the local tribes in treaties signed between them and the national government. "People before profit," yelled one masked protestor. Another punching the air shouted, "Hear our voice or feel our wrath!" It is estimated up to 150 people in the small populated district turned out. Police have defended their actions and said the protestors were breaking COVID-19 rules on public gatherings and social distancing.

Legal arguments continue in the courts over the resort but tensions heated up this week when site inspectors for GVG arrived in the area. The government has said it will not comment while the case is before the courts. In a brief statement issued today, it condemned the protests as reckless during the pandemic but added that it understood the concerns of the indigenous tribes of the area.

Alejandro Chal becomes second elected President in 5 months

The Supreme Court of Campinas has decreed the election of Alejandro Chal to overlap the current elected president, Vinícius Garcia's, term. The decision comes after tumultuous protests around the country in the span of 20 violent weeks. The Pandemic Investigation Panel has stated that Vinícius Garcia's decision-making against the virus spread was undemocratic and placed the whole nation under severe danger during quarantine. As a result, the PIP presented to the Federal Senate the official request for elections on a democratic basis, signed by over 23 senators. Santa Thereza was the last country in South America to initiate the vaccination process for Covid-19, which has already claimed the lives of 230 thousand Therezans.

Vinícius Garcia is charged with state-sanctioned neglect, abuse of Congressional power, and racketeering. It is suspected that the Empire of Aurea is backing this new state in order to establish a second front war against Rio Cana if war should come in the future. If is for this reason that an economic and military embargo of North East Brazil will be put into action. The military will also be sending 25000 heavily armed troops to the most northern point of our Republic. Our navy will also be involved. P.M. DOES NOT RULE OUT "PASVAC"

Prime Minister Cesc Alenya has said he is "not comfortable" with the idea of vaccine passports (widely called "pasvac" in N.C.) but has not ruled it out as a way to control the virus. Lawmakers in New Catalonia has just this week been discussing plans that could see certain venues and activities limited to those who have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine and who would have a government issued "pasvac".

However, some parties and businesses as well as civil rights groups have expressed their opposition to the plans arguing it might create two classes of citizens. Some businesses are worried the extra work confirming pasvac statuses, and the turning away if those without, will cost them money.

The government said there are no definite plans and every option is being considered. New Catalonia has had a slow vaccine rollout coupled with high hesitance. It also is currently experiencing a "fourth wave" of the virus with some calling for a new lockdown.

Covid-19: Vaccine Shortage, NHD Heavily Scrutinized

ARICA, It is 7:30 in the morning. Benicía Huerta, and her youngest child aged 3, are waiting in the street outside a clinic. The street lights are still the only illumination around. A handwritten sign on the door reads, "We are sorry but the vaccine is no longer available at this time...all appointments have been canceled". As the minutes go on, and the sun begins to peek over the tops of buildings, a crowd begins to gather. Some wearing disposable masks while most sport bandanas made from discarded rags or cloth; they all keep their distance while reading the note. 8 am arrives and so does the doctor and his nurses. The crowd moves closer to each other, yet they try not to swarm the clinic doors too much as fear still holds them back.

"Please keep three meters apart!", one nurse reminds the crowd, "If you had an appointment for the vaccine please go home and call us later...", another nurse says, "...We will let you know if and when we can reschedule you." The disheartened crowd begins to dissipate.

This has become the new normal for Montesidro. Vaccine stocks are seemingly empty despite an initial count of 80,000 doses of Sinovax and 10,000 AstraZeneca vaccines by the National Health Department (NHD) and their repeated promises to acquire enough to vaccinate the entire country by late June, a deadline which has very much come and gone.

I asked Benicía why she had waited despite the sign?—"I had to. I have to help tend the animals at my job, cook and clean for my four kids and husband. We lived on a decent income before this pandemic, but me and my husband can't afford to get sick. He was able to get his shots back in May because of his pre-existing condition but I was not....If I get sick, or die, how is he going to handle a young one, work, and take care of the other kids at night? The hospitals closed their programs so I have had to come to clinics before my older ones have to go to school. I pray every night that the next clinic will have enough to take me."

In Isidro and Tacna, police have arrested groups for violating anti-congregation orders while waiting outside hospitals and closed clinics. Arica has chosen not to extend theirs. The Nurse's union and several Congresspeople have put out ads denouncing the NHD and its Director, Juan-Filipe Querertes, for repeatedly failing to deliver on promises about vaccine procurement and lying under oath about a rise in asymptomatic cases. Senate leader Juliáno Lucco (PNO) has set a date in two weeks to begin formal impeachment proceedings against Querertes; although, political pundits have claimed they do not have enough votes for his removal due to his rank in the Frente Republicano (PFR).

PM Rules Out ‘Vaccine Passports’; Provinces Protest

There will be no national ‘vaccine passport’ scheme, the prime minister said today; though he confirmed each province may choose to implement its own. Taking questions in Parliament this afternoon, Dean Smith said that, while he ‘encourages everyone who is eligible’ to get vaccinated, enforcing ‘vaccine passports’ would ‘create a two-tier society’.

The remarks have been heavily criticised by the opposition Labour Party who have accused Smith of undermining his own government’s vaccine rollout. ‘The Prime Minister is sending out mixed messages,’ claimed Labour’s health spokesperson Katherine Flynn. She went on to say, ‘[Smith] encourages people to get [the vaccine] but then says there will be no repercussions against those who decide they have no responsibility to society.’ The PM dismissed her claims as ‘exactly the kind of attitude we want to avoid’.

Opposition parties are not the only voices expressing frustration with Smith’s stance. A handful of provincial governments mid ‘vaccine passport’ rollout have accused the prime minister of hindering their progress. Will Crichton, Premier of Lagos and a member of Smith’s National Party, attacked the PM on Twitter, saying, ‘This is a real chance to encourage uptake and let us return to normal. Disappointed [Smith] decided instead to undermine provinces.’

Neragua’s vaccine rollout has been among the most successful in South America with 70% of adults having received their first jab and over half of adults now being fully vaccinated. First shipment of Toxic wastes on route to the Rio Cana-Aurea border

Trying to protect the health and beauty of Rio Cana from contamination, the government has passed legislation requiring all companies which produce toxic wastes to send them to a newly built toxic waste storage facility located on the Rio Cana-Aurea border. The facility is located in SW autonomous Marina province in an isolated area (at least in Rio Cana) 200 meters from the Aurea border. The first shipment left today. A facility to make the toxic waste harmless is planned for in the future if and when a private company is found that specializes in these things.

Ten Thousand Vaccines For Montesidro

Health Minister Kay Truman announced to the House of Assembly yesterday that Neragua will send 10,000 COVID–19 vaccines to the small Andean nation of Montesidro, as the nation struggles with a so called 'fourth wave' of infections. It's understood the vaccines are already prepared for departure from RNAF Limay in the nation's northwest.

Neragua is well ahead of most South American nations in its vaccine rollout. Almost 90% of adult have had their first jab while just under two-thirds of the adult population have received both doses of the vaccine. The government estimates that is has enough vaccine stocks to provide booster shots in autumn.

Meanwhile, several poorer nations in South America have yet to begin nationwide vaccination programmes. Several richer nations have argued that the pandemic in the continent (and wider world) cannot be fully curtailed until and unless poorer nations can also begin mass vaccination of their populations. Political leader in Neragua have also toed this line in recent months.

Covid-19: Vaccination Rate Increases

At a press conference on Tuesday November 2nd, President of the Nurses Union, Anita Gomez, applauded the increase in vaccinations. Earlier in October, the National Health Department (NHD) receive foreign aid of 10,000 doses from Neragua, 2,000 from other nations, and 91,300 in purchased SinoVac doses that were delayed by nearly 3-months.

Deputy Director of the NHD, Maricio Ubalto, oversaw the unloading of the much-needed doses alongside the Neraguan Ambassador. Ubalto has been acting as the head of the NHD since the Director, Juan-Filipe Querertes, who has placed himself on unpaid leave since escaping impeachment by a singular vote in the Senate. "We cannot afford for any more mishandling of vaccines," Ubalto said to reporters who asked why a private security firm would be handling the transportation and storage of all government acquired vaccine vials.

Aureans marching in Marina

The autonomous province of Marina, located in the southern half of Rio Cana and which has a long border with the Kingdom of Aurea, today has had a military parade in its capital city of Marina. What was strange about the military parade was that the parade involved only ordinary Aurean citizens. Aurean citizens who have fled the corrupt and despotic monarch and his cronies running the Kingdom of Aurea. These brave, liberty loving Aureans seek to free there land. While the central government of Rio Cana frowns upon this, this group of Aureans have found support from the autonomous leadership of Marina. Some say parts of the Kingdom of Aurea and Marina share a common history.

DA threatens to quit gov if COVID restrictions kept

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has threatened to quit the government of Prime Minister Dirk Borst if it extends emergency COVID-19 restrictions which have been in place since the start of the pandemic in 2020. The National Emergency (COVID-19) Law was passed in March 2020 and gave the government broad powers to lockdown the country and ban public gatherings. It originally expired in March 2021. However, the government agreed to extend the law so it could continue to dealing with the pandemic while a vaccine was developed and rolled out. The law is set expire again on 31 March 2022 but Prime Minister Borst suggested that the law may need another, though smaller, extension due to the slow vaccine program in Pomeron. However, the DA has threatened to quit the government if that is done.

The DA is the junior partner of the three-party coalition alongside the National Democratic Party of Dirk Borst and the Socialist Workers Party of Vice Prime Minister Marjolijn Beumers. The coalition has a bare majority of 51 to 49 in the 100 member parliament. If the DA did walk away from the government, it is possible the remaining coalition can survive as there are some other parties that support the extension of restrictions. However, the greater possibility is that the government would collapse and an early election take place. The current parliament's term is set to expire in 2023.

The prime minister called crisis talks over the weekend to avert the possibility saying that the country's health was more important than political arguing. The SAP has said it will not quit the government over any extensions of restrictions.
