Campaign Season Kicks Up High
In the one of the most strangest things in political season, a moderate Liberal is being primaried with an ad. "Jake Lee. He lowered taxes for the rich. Cut social programs. Leaving our police and firefighters to bleed dry when they retire. The answer is clear. Jake's not working." What's strange is that the ad for is not bought by the progressives but the Conservatives, the Conservative Action PAC.

In other news, the Supreme Court has recently decided the issue where Liberals are trying to challenge the Citizens Districting Commission which draws up boundaries. They argue that the constitution allows only the legislature to draw up boundaries. The Supreme Court ruled on a 5-4 case that the Citizens Districting Commission is legal. Justice Sadie Deerut was the swing vote that voted with the liberals surprising everyone. Valley Wells, a wealthy Biologist and millionaire donor to the Conservative Party applauded the decision, "This was a great decision for good government! No more of the dumb Liberals rigging gerrymandering to their favor!"

Little Red Riding Hood
Kristen Torres The Cosmopolitan
July 19

Who knew that the pop star, Kristen Torres lived in my neighborhood? The singer is known for her lyrics, pertaining to city life and romance was controversial with her choice in music. Where other Latinx artists or musicians pursue reggaeton, cumbia, salsa, corrido, or ranchero music, Kristen decided to pursue pop even if there weren't many artists following the route since the 1990's. Latin pop has been on the decline since the late 2000's as artists pursue either more urban music or the traditional. However pop is questioned of whether it has any merit, as critics argue everything is dumbed down to autotune, meaningless or simple lyrics, and repetitive tunes.

Her neighborhood that she lived in used to belong to a bunch of whites but after a series of riots related to Black Lives Matter, property values have plummeted and a few upper class whites have fled to escape the ensuing chaos. In an interview, she was asked what was her opinion on the issue, "I think that it's a divisive issue. Many people are angry yet you can't stop them coming. It's a great that crime used to be low but the pushing of people of color out of our communities is bad. And now it's starting to be reversed because Latinx are starting to come out again and rent or buy property." When asked if she had any influences on her music, "My boyfriend! He's been an inspiration. My crush on another boy has also been an influence. The lines of my music relates to the emotions I feel when I'm with him and my worry, fear, and anxiety when I'm not with him. A few of my lyrics is also based on the city and my experiences."

Her home, located neatly up on the end of a steep hill lined with residential homes not too far overlooking an expanse of space down over a cliff. The house was fairly quaint, modest unlike many celebrities who ended up having million dollar homes. "It's really beautiful up here. I would take my boyfriend when it's more quiet up here and he would place his hands around my waist, and we would gaze down looking over the trees."

No Delay To Pres. Election – Minister

Sunday 2 Aug. 2020

Minister of the Interior, Gertrude Pietersen, has stated that November's presidential election will not be delayed, despite worries of a 'second wave' as coronavirus cases increase. Speaking on Staat van de Natie, a political talk show, the minister confirmed the election is set to go ahead as planned, though stated the government is investigating measures to make it easier to vote while observing social distancing rules.

The first round of the presidential election is set to take place on 4 November with a second run-off round on 18 November if no candidates wins over 50% of the vote. There have been concerns over its conduct, however, after COVID–19 cases began rising again after a further reduction in lockdown measures from the beginning of June.

Remaining lockdown restrictions, such as the closure of cinemas and suspension of all public events such as sports, are currently scheduled to be lifted on 1 September. However, an increase of cases in the last week has led to many questioning weather the lockdown was lifted too early and, if it was to be reimposed, what effect that would have on the presidential election.

Ruud Beuse, leader of the largest opposition group in parliament, the Pomeron People's Party (PVP), first raised the prospect of a delay, suggesting that the election be shifted to May 2021. The PVP leader's remarks were widely scoffed at in parliament and Beuse criticized. Some opponents suggested Beuse wanted the delay to give his party a better chance of winning it; suggestions he vehemently denied.

Pietersen, of the governing National Democratic Party (NDP), insisted that the election would not be delayed. She cited the constitution which sets the date of the presidential election to the first Wednesday of November in every year divisible by five and added that, for the election date to be changed, a constitutional amendment would be required which the government has insisted will not happen.

The discussion parallels that in the United States where Donald Trump suggested the presidential election there, also this November, should be delayed. Pietersen laughed off the comparison saying the two scenarios were very different and that Pomeron's related solely to public health.

Incumbent president, Diederik Boer of the NDP, is running for a second five-year term and opinion polling suggests he will win reelection.

Sweden to Purchase Nemea Tanks

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - The Swedish Ministry of Defence, in a bid to bolster its armed forces, has agreed to purchase a total of 40 Nemea tanks at a price of 60 million HIC (49 079 382,02 SEK) apiece, or a total of 3 billion HIC (1 963 175 280,90 SEK). The tanks would be delivered in batches of eight per year, and the Swedish government would pay 600 million HIC (392 635 056,18 SEK) per year.

The tank already uses the Rh-120 found on the Leopard 2 and the M2 Browning machine gun, with the only non-standardised weapon being the 7.7 mm machine gun, which will be replaced to one to fire 7.62×51 mm NATO rounds. It will also come with an APS system.

This deal would bolster the Swedish tank force by 33%, based on the 120 Strv 122 tanks currently in service.

"After seeing its performance, this may be the greatest tank I've seen in action, and may seriously rival the likes of the T-14 Armata," Peter Hultqvist, the Swedish Minister of Defence, said in an interview. "We may order more if we have the money."

The Army of DxD is an army tasked with defending the world from supernatural threats that aim to bring chaos to or destroy it. It is, for the most part, neutral in human politics (though it does slightly favour NATO), but will actively try to prevent a world war, and, in a war, will take a side if its bases, puppet territories and/or concessions are attacked enough.

Federal States fighter jet shot down by Colombian military
Amid rising tensions on the South American continent, a Federal States fighter plane was shot down yesterday after responding to a border skirmish. For the past month, the state of Venezuela’s National Guard and Federal States Border Service officers have been sporadically exchanging fire with Colombian troops. 5 Colombian soldiers, 1 American soldier, 1 American Border Service officer, and 2 American civilians have been killed.

American civilians near the border have begun carrying personal firearms, which is usually enough to scare away Colombian forces, as most Colombian border units wield outdated equipment. Yesterday’s incident comes as the Colombians brought heavy machine guns and RPGs to the fight. With no ground units able to respond quickly enough, two American A-10 Warthogs were called in to assist the civilians instead. Colombian forces fired a surface to air missile, taking out one Warthog and killing the pilot, however the strike killed 2 Colombian soldiers and forced their retreat.
Don’t use NS stats except for changes in economics, political freedoms, or civil rights which may eventually make their way into written canon if I get tired of worldbuilding.

Conservative Party renamed, now known as the National Populist Party

Harold Lawson, the party leader and Prime Minister, announced the name change in a press conference at the Conservative Party Office. The change must be approved by the party membership before the annual party conference in October. The Conservative Party, formally Her Majesty’s Party of Conservatism and Islamic Democracy, will now formally change to Her Majesty’s Party of National Populism and Islamic Democracy.

More than just a name change, the proposal, widely expected to be approved by a landslide, changes the internal structure of the party, concentrating power in the party leader, who will have the power to appoint his successor according to the new rules, meaning that Lawson, 52, will be able to lead his party for life. Support for the change comes from the hard right of the party, the dominant faction to which the Prime Minister belongs. Few critics within the party spoke out against the change, however the most notable critic is Jackson Webb, Lawson's former Deputy Prime Minister who was dismissed in May. Webb, 46, was previously a member of the Prime Minister’s inner circle, yet they fell out over the issue of bailouts, with Webb strongly in favour and Lawson strongly against the idea. Webb is expected to be expelled from the party once the change is approved.

NB marks 75th anniversary of liberation

SANDAKAN — Solemnity and social distancing marked the 75th anniversary of North Borneo's liberation from Japanese occupation during World War II on Saturday, as Governor-General John McCuddin paid tribute to military and civilian victims and called for "reflection".

Liberation Day celebrations have been widely scaled back, cancelled or even moved online as the former British colony moved out of lockdown restrictions imposed earlier in the year during the coronavirus outbreak. A virtual concert featuring favourite national musicians and the national orchestra will be broadcast on Saturday night.

People flew the current national and former colonial flags – and even Britain's Union Jack – from their balconies and gardens, and public squares and streets across the country were also draped in red, white and blue bunting and ribbons.

Speaking to a sparsely populated and socially distanced square in central Sandakan – which served as capital until 1946 – on Saturday morning, Governor-General McCuddin drew parallels between the sacrifices the North Bornean people made during the war and the lockdown imposed earlier this year to halt the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus.

"In these exceptional times, we have all had to give up some of our much cherished and hard won freedom. Our country hasn't known anything like this since the war,” he said in a nationally televised speech after the nation had observed two minutes silence in honour of the war dead.

Only the Governor-General, Prime Minister Seb Abel, and a handful of other officials were present at the wreath-laying ceremony at the National Memorial that would usually draw thousands of people.

While praising the British, Indian, Dutch and Australian soldiers, resistance heroes and civilians who opposed the Japanese occupiers, Governor-General McCruddin said the country should recognise its failures too.

"[Some people at the time] felt abandoned, insufficiently heard, insufficiently supported, even if it were only in words. Including from London,” he said, striking an unusually candid and personal note for the usually strictly neutral position.

London, preoccupied with the war in Europe, was unable to adequately coordinate or respond to – let alone repel – Japanese threats of invasion and, although a small, mostly Indian force held out for some weeks, the colony was nevertheless invaded leading to a swift surrender. The apparent lack of action from the British government was considered akin to abandonment by some in the colony. Despite the British continuing to strongly oppose the Japanese occupation, they proved largely unable to assist and it was a predominantly Australian-led effort that liberated the British colony some 4 years later, leading some to feel greater loyalty to Canberra than London in following years.

In the early hours of Saturday, dignitaries began the official start of remembrance events by lighting a giant beacon torch on Layang-layang beach in Labuan where the Japanese surrendered on 9 September 1945.

At least 5,000 North Bornean people died under Japanese occupation, with many more undocumented natives and minorities presumed killed – many in death marches or massacres conducted by the Japanese military government.

As of Saturday, North Borneo had reported 410 cases of, and 8 deaths from, COVID-19.

Alicia Wenton-Sewell dies aged 91

Actress and civil rights activist Alicia Wenton-Sewell has died in her sleep, aged 91.

Born Alicha Katangi on the 2nd of May 1929 in Yellowrock, Dutch Joija, she was dubbed the 'Queen of Joijan Film', and starred in over 200 movies and TV shows in her lifetime, from the 1940s up to the mid-2000s.

She passed away in her home in Kanesa, on the island of Mahgalo, and was found dead Saturday morning by her granddaughter Hana, who released a statement on her official pages on Instagram and Twitter. Sewell suffered from a congenital heart condition which almost killed her several times throughout her career, but the cause of death is yet to be determined.

She had major roles including Annabelle Kingsley in 1958's 'Mr. Magnetism', directed by Giles Jungéa and Holly Baker in 1963's 'Summer in Mahgalo', an iconic comedy directed by Benjamin Rompton, and she starred alongside future President Rowan Elland (who played 'The Man, Al Tor') in 1959's 'The Man from Outer Space' as Mathilde Decraux, Elland's love interest.

Ever since her teenage years, she also campaigned for the right for mixed and Indigenous women to vote, as a mixed woman herself. Before 1947, ethnic minorities were not allowed to apply for mortgages, vote, apply for loans for cars, houses or business and were segregated from the Caucasian community. She was also typecasted as a damsel in distress in her earlier films, based on the stereotype that Indigenous and mixed Joijans were helpless and wards of the State. She also supported the LGBT+ community from the 1960s after a visit to San Francisco's gay community, and divorced her husband of 22 years Harold Wenton to live as an open lesbian. She had no children with him, but instead adopted 3 children alongside her lifelong partner Janice Mutanga (1922 - 2017). Her popularity dwindled, but the counterculture saw her as a cult hero. Recently, she came out in support for the Black American community, especially as Black Joijans have been affected greatly by racism as well.
