A Trimester among the Selkie (IC, CLOSED)

Postby The Selkie » Sun Aug 02, 2020 9:02 am

Hello and welcome to A Trimester among the Selkie!
This RP is closed to Members of The Strategic and Economic Alliance, the OOC can be found here (which includes the profiles of the foreign exchange students). Although it is very likely, that you can not participate, you are of course very welcome to read along!

Professor Zane Fuip of the Tribe of Cork.
Eseir Inn, Leuda.

People usually described me as a wardrobe of a man and with 1.94 meters in height and the width of a wardrobe, I wasn't exactly suited to be shy. As a Professor for Archaeology and Head of the Exchange Programs, I couldn't be.
Teaching required a bit of volume in the chest, as to take in air so that even the smallest sod of a student in the last row of the lecture hall could understand me.
This Summer Trimester, we had a lot of foreign students and that deliberately: The Strategic and Economic Alliance was all about cooperation and peace and such stuff and what better way to ensure, that future generations would have a solid grasp about their nation's partners, then having them go on an exchange?
That, and people might learn a thing or two from each other.
For this batch, I knew of eight students from the PPC, Lillorainen, Shamsiyya and Mervay, which were supposed to come and spent the Trimester, the next three months, with us, learning, teaching, generally having fun, making friends and hopefully take with them knowledge.
And souvenirs.
One could never have too many souvenirs.
They would all be housed in a small inn near the Campus of the University of Leuda, the Eseir Inn, together with three students and an Assistant to the Faculty, who all four were their Elaísi, Helpers or Guides. There shouldn't be too much of a language barrier: Kids around here learned English starting in Elementary School, with admittedly varying degrees of success and skill by the end of their schooling, and if everything else fails, there's always trying to communicate via hands and feet.
The Eseir Inn was a good house, with a taproom, a good kitchen, a second and a third floor with more then enough rooms, an attic above that and a stable. The staff was nice, although quite small: The Eiseir Inn had hit some rough times as of late, with many of their main customers, tourists, staying home due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
There hasn't been much of a Pandemic around our parts, but it never hurt to be careful, which was why at every port and airport the arrivals were tested immediately. Those negative were let go.
In any case, the UoL had decided to rent the entire Inn for this exchange program and with only eight students coming (at least which I knew of, who knew, if there might not be a very late arrival or two), the remaining staff was not too stressed out. There would be breakfast, there would be dinner, there would be materials to fix oneself a breaktime snack before university started, there were two maids, who did the beds and cleaned. Each room had a small bathroom with a shower, sink and toilet, the room itself consisting of a bed, a desk with a chair and a wardrobe, all made of sturdy, good wood (except for the mattresses, those were actually imported). It was not a plush hotel in Hochheyde, but it did its job and it did it splendidly.
Including this here place: When one entered, one was right in front of the reception desk with a portal leading left, into the tap room, where I had asked all of the Elaísi and exchange students to assemble for dinner.
On the other side of the tap room, opposite to the portal, were the stairs leading up into the second floor, the bar underneath that.
As we were only thirteen people, plus maybe a late arrival or two, so we were all at the same table, the smell of a freshly cooking Stobhach, Selkie-Stew, was wafting over from the kitchen. It would take a few more minutes, until that was ready, but there were already a few crackers on the table as appetizers and a can of hot, fresh tea, Peppermint Tea, if I was not completely mistaken.
I looked at my wristwatch and then cleared my throat, hopefully getting everyone's attention.
"Alright, everyone, good evening.", I began in English, using the typical melodic cadence we Selkie had in our accent, making it sound a bit as if I was singing my words to the students. Dropped vowels and rolling Rs did enhance that effect. "Welcome to the Free Lands and Leuda. You should already know me, if not by my deeds, then at least by my letters, which you received." I smiled. I had been in letter-contact with the students in case of questions or clarifications required from them for specific points in their forms, and they might know my name from there. "I am Professor Zane Fuip of the Tribe of Cork and I head the UoL's Exchange Programs. It's a pleasure to meet you all - and I know, that some of you want to take my courses this semester, so you'll see me a bit."
I let a beat pass.
"Four other faces you should remember...", I began and motioned to a blonde young man with grey-blue eyes, he said opposite to me, which was why he was first. "This young chap here is Berkant Breis of the Tribe of Cork, Assistant to the Faculty and one of the Elaísi - your guides through this Trimester, if you need them."
I motioned to the next person, a blonde woman mid-twenties, blue eyes, her hair pinned up. "Ida Ardscoil of the Tribe of Wicklow." Ida waved and said a merry good evening. "She actually belongs to the Seminary, but volunteered to help. Besides that, to my understanding, you are doing many courses at our faculty this year anyway?"
Ida nodded. "Indeed.", she said in a soft, light voice.
I spotted the next woman, a woman, who might as well have been the chromatic opposite in all but gender. Black hair, brown eyes, a pair of wolf-ears standing on her head, it was none other then... "Elin Blaidd, of Tralee Descent."
"Pleasure to meet you.", she said, her voice a bit deeper then Ida's.
"And finally..." I looked around, did not find, who I was looking for immediately. "Ida?" A hand waved from all the way down at the table, another black-haired young woman, blue eyes shining. She was quite shy. Her having volunteered was a bit of a surprise back in the day. I smiled. "There ya are, lass! People, Ida Leabimád of the Tribe of Cork, Ida, people."
"Pleasure to meet you all.", her voice was mousy and small, far removed from the other Ida's calm and soft lightness or Elin's self-assured mezzo-soprano, the young woman almost retreating behind her long bangs a moment later.
"Alright, everyone...", I said, "...now it's your turn. Please, introduce yourselves!"

My people are called the Selkie, the nation is usually called the Free Lands in MT-settings. Thanks.

Eseir Inn, Leuda, Free Lands of the Selkie.
The Eseir Inn quite did seem to be an excellent location to spend a longer time in. While nowhere near the Bentesröd Beach Hotels or the Jazirat Albarakin Island Resort in terms of size, it apparenly did have more than enough rooms, and certainly good ones, to offer space for the foreign students arriving, and with a good kitchen and a taproom, all basic needs were served as well.
Indeed, there were few better occasions to make future generations of member states of the Strategic and Economic Alliance, or SEA for short, aware of one another than a student exchange program - and even though the foreign students present didn't exactly overrun the University of Leuda like Berserks, it was still a solid start for a pilot project. No one wanted to miss the chance of gaining knowledge, experience, new friends, lots of fun - and, of course, a metric heckton of souvenirs.
In Lillorainen, English had been taught to every student starting in primary school for a long time now. Shamsiyya had made English classes optional already during the era of the Sultanate and eventually mandatory after the end of the Cold War. People from Prussia-Poland and Mervay seemed to be proficient at English as well. So, with English being taught to elementary school children in the Free Lands, and also being a lingua franca in the Free Lands' academic world, there would be no language barrier - even though there was the remarkable Selkie-Accent, with dropped vowels and rolled Rs, which all students would hear for a while now, and some even might adapt over the time.
Of course, everyone was aware of the caution of many people in here in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, even though these parts hadn't been hit too hard by the coronavirus. There had been a larger case in the Lillorainian State of Thulia, and a few minor cases in the Shamsiyyan Canton of Khadra, but these, so far, had been the only loopholes. Still, people were cautious, and bringing a fresh, negative COVID-19 test, or being tested at the point of arrival, was quite helpful to get around in here.
Professor Zane Fuip of the Tribe of Cork, a wardrobe of a man, whose name indeed did ring a bell, introduced himself and welcomed the exchange students to the UoL. Then, he went on to introducing the Elaísi, Guides or Helpers, to them - Berkant Breis of the Tribe of Cork, a young chap, certainly older than he actually looked, with short, blonde hair and grey-blue eyes. Ida Ardscoil of the Tribe of Wicklow, a blonde, blue eyed lassie in her mid twenties, with a soft, light voice. Elin Blaidd, of Tralee Descent, a Spiorad and one of the well-known Blaidd Sisters, especially well-known to those who tended to kill time on social media. Ida Leabimád of the Tribe of Cork, a black-haired, blue-eyed woman with a mousy voice, seeming a bit shy.
Professor Fuip now asked the students to introduce themselves.
A lad with blonde hair and blue eyes made the start. "So, good evening, everyone" - he said. "I'm Frederik Leverdal." His last name would certainly ring a bell with any equestrian, whom there were plenty of in the Free Lands, who hadn't slept under a rock the last couple of years. "Fred's fine, though. I'm twenty years old and study History and National Economics at the University of Lysköping, in Lillorainen." He didn't grin or even smile overly brightly, but kept friendly and calm, his deep voice making it hard to imagine how he could possibly not stay calm at any time. "Pleasure to meet y'all."
A young woman, also blonde and blue-eyed, continued. "Hello! My name's Imke Hagedorn, I'm twenty-two, and I study History and Politics at the University of Pontrath, Lillorainen!" - she said. Her voice was around as high as Elin's, her tone made her sound lively and kind of solemn. "It's a pleasure to me as well! Oh, and I'm not exactly in love with my first name, so unless you're professionally obliged to address me as 'Miss Hagedorn', everyone's warmly welcome to just call me Immy."
The next one speaking up was a lassie as well, brunette, with green eyes making her look a bit scrutinizing. Yet, she smiled. "Lydia Hedderich, it's a pleasure to be around!" - she introduced herself. Her voice was deeper than Immy's, her tone was relatively calm, but also assertive. Yet, just like Fred, she kept it brief for now. "I'm twenty-one, and I study Archaeology at the University of Nienhagen, in Lillorainen."
Then, another lad spoke up, with dark hair and dark eyes, a black beard and a moustache. "Hi! I'm Atif Baylaoui!" - he introduced himself, smiling, talking in the most friendly tone some in here possibly had ever heard, his voice emphasizing this perfectly. As it would turn out later, some of these features did give him a distant advantage with the ladies. "I am twenty-three years old, and I've studied History at the University of Adirnabul, in Shamsiyya, for three years now, and well, I just thought, that it certainly wouldn't kill me to broaden my horizon a tiny bit. Pleasure to meet y'all!"
Then, another lassie spoke up, brunette, with brown eyes. "I'm Shirin Qahtan" - she said. Her voice was around as high as Immy's, her tone was friendly, but not overly so. She kept it brief, which could let other assume, that she just wasn't the person to make a huge fuss about herself. "I'm twenty-four, and I study History and Literature at the University of Junaira, Shamsiyya. Nice to meet y'all!"
Then, the next one would speak up, whoever that might be ...

Since Lillorainen's geography is currently being overhauled a 'tiny' bit, most information on it posted before December 12, 2018, is not entirely reliable anymore. Until there's a new, proper factfile, everything you might need to know can be found here. Thank you. #RetconOfDoom (Very late update, 2020/08/30 - it's still going on ...)

Liutgard "Lily" Fischer
On my way in, I thought I would have it down pat. Just get in, stay quiet, take notes, pass tests, and go home, hopefully unburdened by anything but learning materials.

No dice.

Instead I had to sit through this fucking bullshit. I hated these things. I had to learn names and faces when realistically I would only ever talk to maybe one or two, let alone 'form lasting, lifelong friendships' or whatever bullshit this was meant for. Let's be honest; there's no point making friends if you can't keep 'em, and there's no way to keep friends unless you can focus what precious little time you had on-and with-them.

At least the inn and it's rooms were alright. No bullshit and a good view. Less stuff for me to clean, the easier it would for me to clean it, after all.

The Pandemic had left a bit of a mark on the Commonwealth, sure, but that wasn't too much. There were a few infectees, and then the government shut everything down. A few riots broke out, mostly targeted at the small Chinese population in the urban areas, but those had been put down quickly. I even managed to watch one get broken up in person, but that's a story for another time.

The best news, by far, was the fact that the locals spoke English. The language of the Selkie had been a persistent source of rage, frustration, and at least one breakdown for me. I fucking hated it. Oh, sure, it was a wonderful language, but it mocked me with it's smug, melodic sounds that would remain forever beyond my comprehension.
English was a different matter entirely. I hung around a cafe in secondary school, frequented by a couple of American troops. One of them, an enlisted-man by the name of Elias, had slowly imparted some English unto me. Books, school, and an obscure roleplaying forum run by some Australian author had done the rest, and now I could speak English well. Or, at least, well enough. Gah! Tangents, tangents! Always my worst enemy. A story for another time, as always.

In any case. Regardless of my own personal contempt for pleasantries and bullshitting, I still decided to keep my yapper shut and listen in.
One after another; first, Zane Fuip of the Tribe of Cork(I remembered that name, vaguely, from some of the letters and emails I had written). Then Berkant Breis, Ida Ardscoi(Where had I heard that name before?), Elin Blaidd(Who was, apparently, wearing a headband with wolf-ears on it, making her a woman of great, ahem, culture), and finally, another Ida, this time an Ida Leabimad.
Then the other exchange students. Lillorainens and two Shamsiyyans. Fredrik Leverdal, Imke Hagedorn, Lydia Hedderich, Shirin Qahtan, and Atif Baylaoui.
And then they finished, and now...well, fuck me. Looks like it was my turn.

"Fischer, Liutgard." stated the ashen-haired girl, sounding like she was merely rattling off ticker-tape readings. She paused for a second to wipe away a straying strand of hair, and then continued on. "Student 4155851, University of Zielona Góra, currently studying Architecture and minoring in History."
Her face darkened for the slightest bit of a moment, before reverting to the previous poker-face. "I request that there be no attempts to come up with any nicknames for me."

Unlike everyone else, Liutgard's tone was monotone and robotic, and her speech seemed brisk and to the point, at best, with little room for pleasantries and common courtesy. It didn't take a psychologist to tell that she didn't want to participate in this sort of thing.

Theomer Eorling
Eseir Inn, Leuda, Free Lands of the Selkie.

In Theomer’s mind, one can have too many souvenirs. Of course, being brought up on a ranch out in Rohan, he was never greatly attached to material trinkets-save for any he himself made or was bequeathed to him. The greatest accommodation was of course time, more specifically moments. Moments spent with those you cherished, moments spent fashioning a legacy...and the smell of lamb stew brought him back to the little ranch house out near the Entwade. Arriving here, he had hoped to take advantage of the University’s degrees on sociology and economics-something that his mentor would state would serve him well when he would become King. The political intrigue was far and beyond him, and not something he would easily divulge, for frankly, it was nobody’s business but his own. Indeed, he had come to the Free Lands to get away from the comforts of his home, to see the world, and to delve into the unknown...

But for now, let’s see what he did know...

Prof. Zane Fuip of the Tribe of Cork; a gardener or at least someone whose hands were often enough in the dirt. Theomer’s former profession as a farmer meant he had a keen eye for such details. Truth be told, he had not known much of Prof. Fuip’s deeds, having only been introduced secondhand(or third, as his mentor Rev. Galanais had scouted ahead for prestigious universities for him to study at), but he was certain to read up on him...the gentleman was an apparent veteran and a horseman. Something that Theomer would admire and come to respect.

Berkant Bries he had heard of-or rather, the Bries and Uther name; fellow industry professionals as far as his father was concerned. Just another cow baron from a distant land, who seemed to come off as more “baron” than “cow”, much to Theo’s distaste.

It was Ms. Ardscoil of the Tribe of Wicklow’s eyes, and the way her voice sighed out of her throat that placed a slight pressure on Theo’s chest. He knew those eyes, the eyes of loss, the desire to be strong when something was lost...he had seen it in Aceus when he studied a bit with Princess Erika-the two having a bit of a nebulous relationship. Not exactly enemies, but not exactly friendly due to a variety of circumstances. Theomer tried not to look at her too long, he did not want to come off as presumptuous or disdainful.

Keenly he noted Ms. Elin Blaidd, of Tralee Descent as a Spiorad Ainmhithe. Something he considered mildly momentous, as they were reputed to be as reclusive and wise as the Elves of his homeland. In fact, he drew many parallels between the Elven-folk and the Spiorad. Of course, it is a good rule of thumb to never assume a lady’s age-one can live for centuries yet not always be centuries old…

At the last minute, a Ms. Leabimád of the Tribe of Cork, also caught Theo’s attention. She was mousy, atypically shy in demeanor, perhaps bookish...perhaps just social anxiety. Once he acquainted himself with the library, he may see her more frequently.

Unto his fellow students...

He would have to enquire about “Frederik Leverdal”, if any relation to a “Ms. Hilda Leverdal”, the lad knew much about horsemanship and the name rang true. He also seemed to be studying Economics like he was, so perhaps he may find at least a speaking-companion, or someone to study with if nothing else.

Miss Hagedorn was bubbly, a student of politics and history. Though she carried herself with lively demeanor, there was a bit of...solemness. Perhaps not as obvious as Ms. Ardscoil’s, but still there. The dissonance may nag at him if he dwelled overmuch, which he did not intend to.

The first Shamsiyyan spoke, a low and friendly voice, almost intentionally friendly-a Mr. Atif Baylaoui. The next two women spoke briefly, though with exceedingly different energies. Shiren Qahtan, another Shamsiyyan was friendly and to the point-while a Prusso-Pole who spoke with the almost stereotypically monotonous and efficient recitation. Liutgard Fischer (or Liuty, or Lootbox, he was a Dancerian and they were old allies-whom can razz on each other once in a while) was remarkably different. She was an architect…

When it came time for him to speak, he seemed to be like Ms. Leabimád, coming from the throng to make his place known. “Theomer Eorling.” he stated, the name holding power and meaning-if only to those who resided back in Danceria. At first glance, the lightly tanned, blond haired figure stood stocky and tall, bronzed and built by years of hard labour on the farm. His heterochromic eyes, blue and green, shone with determination and power...before relaxing. “I’m from Rohan, in Danceria. I study economics and politics, moreso the former as long as I’m here.” he bowed slightly, the form softening to that of a salt of the earth farmer. “Thank you for having us here, Professor.”

Jakari was very excited to be traveling abroad for the first time, he had grown up in a small town out in the country so had never had the opportunity to experience another country and it's culture before now, so when he found out that his university was offering this program to study in the Free Lands he jumped at the opportunity. Though he noticed quickly that it was a very strange feeling for him to be the only Drailen in the room, or in fact the only one he had seen since he arrived here. Humans were exceedingly rare in his hometown, and even on the diverse university campus in the big city of Harboard where he studied they were still a minority. So it felt strange to find himself in the reverse position. Not that he particularly minded, he was a social butterfly by nature, and had an abundance of confidence when faced with new challenges. Standing out in the crowd like a sore thumb suited him just fine so once the initial awkwardness past and a few other students had finished introducing themselves he eagerly raised his hand for attention and stood up with confident authority to follow. suit.

"Hi everyone! My name's Jakari Lutalla, I'm from Ru, and I'm studying theology and ancient and feudal Ruvian history at Harboard City College. I'm 20, single, I like sports, especially basketball, and I look forward to getting to know all of you a lil better and finding out what this town has to offer!" He flashed a cheerful self assured grin before returning to his seat.

Santino Contarini and Cieline Hoffnung
So here they were, Leuda. A long travel was for sure, but one that would be worth it considering that they will be here for three months entirely before going back home.
Of course they saw the beauty of the Free Lands thanks to the nation being known as one of the main tourist spots for Mervayans, that meant, that everyone around home knew about what the nation will offer you as soon as you land in their shores. And that's what this couple saw in Leuda, they came here to study for the entire trimester after a long time in virtual classes because of the COVID-19 Pandemic around the world; Mervay just returned to normal like a few weeks ago and to a limited degree since some areas are still to wait for a month or heavily restricted, travel abroad was an example as you had to do quarentine two weeks before travel, then keep your distance and take all precautions before travel and then once in the airport take your distance even during the flight which could only take half of it's capacity until government authorities say so.

This couple gladly got able to travel after being accepted to the program, they saved a great amount of money for this travel to pay their expenses out of those offered by the University of course. They have been together for four years now, it seemed it was a strong relationship. Nice couple certainly.

After so much travel and effort, the fact they were in the Eseir Inn for this program made them happy, albeit to a different degree since one just smirked as the other was with a wide smile. They noticed to their surrundings the students that were besides them, Dancerians, Lillo's, Polish-Prussians, Ruvians and Shamsiyyans.

It seemed everyone from The SEA decided to go here certainly, most of them already presentimg themselves to their guides and professors. Leaving the couple as the last one to present themselves.

As such the blonde haired girl was the first one to present herself with an smile.

"Hello! My name is Cieline Hoffnung from Sudentor, Mervay. I study History, Politics and Archaeology at the Selumna Royal University. I hope I can get along with everyone of you all." She grinned warmly at everyone present before sitting down. Next, it was the turn of her boyfriend, which looked at her and the rest before presentimg himself.

"Santino Contarini, it's a pleasure to meet you all. I study History, Politics and Economics in the Selumna Royal University in Sudentor. I hope everyone here can get along with each other for the betterment of our stay here since we will all be together here for the next three months."

He said respectfully smiling at everyone before sitting down too, it was clear he was more... Cold, or respectful if it had to be said. At least everyone presented themselves.

Professor Zane Fuip of the Tribe of Cork.
Eseir Inn, Leuda.

I smiled as everyone introduced themselves - many promising young minds all around, that was for sure. Some seemed less interested to be here, as in here at this table, then others, but that would soon change.
At several introductions, Elin's wolf ears either perked or twitched and the woman herself was all smiles herself.
There were students from the PPC, Danceria, Mervay, the two of them looked a bit like a couple, Lillorainen, Shamsiyya, even a Ruvian. Some were a bit sparse with their introductions, but that was all right, they had a long trip behind them, while some seemed to almost burst with excitement.
I had the feeling, that Miss Fischer and Mister Breis would get along swimmingly, though.
"Pleasure to meet you all.", I said with a smile, "And, again, welcome." I let a beat pass as a woman suddenly stood at the end of the table, a blonde with pale skin and blue eyes, a mole under the left corner of her mouth and under her left eye. She wore a maid dress, not one like one saw in a certain movie genre, but an honest to the Gods Maid Dress, black with a floor length skirt and a white maid apron with frills all over it. A mob cap and a white ribbon around her neck completed the look. I smiled. "And, last, but certainly not least, if I may introduce our gracious hostess, Madame Asteria Glantar of the Tribe of Wexford."
She bowed her head lightly, curtsied slightly. The Historian in me called her whole style and mannerisms 19th century.
"Good evening.", she greeted politely with a bit of an accent in her voice, "I am pleasured to have you all here and I wish you a good and successful semester. As Professor Fuip already mentioned, I am Asteria Glantar of the Tribe of Wexford and this is my inn." She smiled. "I am dropping by to make a few announcements before dinner, namely, one, feel free to approach me or one of my boys or girls at any time. Someone is always at the reception desk and someone is always in the kitchen." She smiled slightly. "Two, breakfast will be available from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., with ingredients for you to make your own breaktime snacks provided. Dinner is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., the bar will open at 8 p.m.. If you want music to dance to, I must confess, that you'll have to bring your own instruments or speakers for the next two weeks, as our sound system is getting a long-needed overhaul."
She let a beat pass.
"Three. My girls will go into your rooms starting at 11 o'clock a.m. and start cleaning and maintenance work, like changing covers and so on and so on. Please do not be surprised. Only exceptions are Saturdays and Sundays.", she continued, "Four, if you break anything, do not be ashamed to tell us. We are insured and we will clean it up, which also has something to do with the insurance."
She then took in air.
"And five, this goes especially to the young men among you...", she added and smiled so beatific that Christian saints looked like the deepest and worst sinners. "...my girls wear maid uniforms, yes, but try not to ogle them. If you are interested in one of them, be upfront and honest with the young lady in question." She smiled and clapped her hand. "That'd be all. I'll now leave you to..."
She glanced into the direction of the kitchen door, which opened to allow passage to two more staff people, one of them a lad, the other a woman, dressed similarly, both carrying huge stainless steel pots, which steamed, a second maid behind them with two baskets of bread.
"...dinner.", Madame Glantar finished with a smile, "It's Stobhach, both vegetarian and not. We were not informed about any culinary issues, which might arise, so we made them à la maison. If there is something, which someone..." She gave me a pointed glance. "...failed to inform us about, now's the time."
Meanwhile, the pots and bread arrived, distribution started.
Stobhach was a stew so Selkie, that the image of a cast iron pot bubbling over a fireplace was so much of an ingrained cliche, that quite a few inns actually had one of those for show and that it was a staple in the movies to show that, yes, these people are Selkie.
It was also a good and filling meal, lamb meat and carrots and onions and parsley were in it, as well as the House did it with kohlrabi, potatoes and more spices. The vegetarian version just left out the meat. The bread was a normal oat bread, nothing too fancy.
It was enough Stobhach on the table to fill a starving Céad of the Younger Militia.
The young man in butler uniform began to distribute, looking to Elin as it was custom to serve the oldest non-host at the table first - she softly shook her head, as she would, one day, be older then any of combined, but right now, wasn't. She instead motioned to the blonde Ida, vintage 1994, and from there, it would go up in the vintages.

Eseir Inn, Leuda.
After Shirin had introduced herself, an ashen-haired girl from Prussia-Poland had spoken up, sounding more like a robot, Liutgard Fischer, even naming her student ID (of course no one was trying to come up with a nickname for Looty, noooho, why would you think that?!), and generally giving the impression, that she would rather be working on a potato farm in Idaho than sitting at this table. She certainly rocked all parties ...
Theomer Eorling, from Rohan, Danceria, seemed to struggle for a second, but managed to get himself introduced; a student of Economics and Politics, probably not the worst guy for some shoptalking for Fred.
Jakari Lutulla was a Ruvian, which wasn't hard to see, and even though he was the only one of the species in this room (as far as one could see), he seemed quite confident and cheerful - not quite at the level of the living sunshine that was Immy, but neither overly shy, nor overly nervous.
Cieline Hoffnung, a blonde-haired lassie from Sudentor, Mervay, introduced herself with a warm grin. Santiano Contarini was a bit colder and more respectful when introducing himself; they studied at the same university and seemed to know each other. They could even pass as a couple.
Professor Fuip welcomed everyone again, then introduced a young woman in an old-fashioned maid dress, Madame Asteria Glantar of the Tribe of Wexford, who bowed her head and curtsied lightly. Her style and mannerism made her seem like she had stepped into a time machine back in 1870 and made her way into the modern era only very recently.
She introduced herself again, then made five important points clear. One, she, as well as the Elaísi, could be approached around the clock with whatever questions might be bugging anybody. Two, breakfast was available from seven to ten o'clock in the morning, dinner was from six to eight in the evening, the bar would open at eight in the evening, and the sound system was currently under overhaul, so the students would need to bring or make their own music. Three, the maids would clean the rooms up at eleven in the morning, with the exception of Saturdays and Sundays, so if anyone happened to still be in their room, there was no reason to be surprised to see a maid with cleaning rags and a bucket of water entering. Four, if anyone broke anything, the hotel staff was to inform, for the reason of insurance matters. And five, if openness and honesty weren't the young men's strong suit, they were better off keeping their hands off the maids.
With that said, she left them for dinner. Stobhach, a stew with lamb meat, carrots, onions, and parsley, as well as kohlrabi, potatoes, and more spices in this case. The vegetarian version just left out the meat; the bread was normal oat bread. A typical stew among the Selkie - to be precise, a stew so Selkie, that some inns made the cast iron pot bubbling over the fireplace a feature for tourists, and in movies, Stobhach was displayed as a staple, virtually screaming, 'In case seeing them on horses, wearing Geansai, speaking with a melodic accent and rolled R's, as well as drinking whiskey while singing We're Selkie of High Renown still doesn't suffice to convince you, that these people are genuine Selkie, here ya' have the ultimate proof!'
Being asked for culinary concerns the hostess hadn't been informed about, no one from Lillorainen or Shamsiyya said anything.
The young man in butler uniform apparently mistook Elin Blaidd for the oldest one around here, most certainly because she was a Spiorad, but in fact, Ida Ardscoil was older than her. It was customary around these parts to serve the oldest non-host first.

Liutgard Fischer
It was over relatively quickly. Thank God.
Just two more people from Mervay. Santino Contarini and Cieline Hoffnung...both from...
"Sudentor?" I asked, confused. "Isn't that a city from...well, Ace Combat?"
I had played a few AC games back as a kid. Mainly 0 and 5; I didn't really like 7, and 6 was, from what I had heard, a travesty.

And then, finally, the sole person I would likely talk to at all; our host, Lady Glantar.

It was chiefly utilitarian information she imparted on to us. When there would be cleaning(11 am daily, except Sat. and Sun.), a warning not to ogle the maids, and finally...supper.

A damned good supper. Stobhac; what pierogi was to Prussia-Poland, Stobhac was to the Selkie. A good, hearty, mutton and potato stew with vegetables, with bread on the side.
I could feel my stomach rumbling already.

Elin nearly got served first, but apparently Ida Arscoil was the oldest, and thus got her portion first. Which was a bit of a surprise, but oh well.

The thought of a good meal was enough to take my mind off of the impending nicknaming...

Enough, Liutgard. This isn't Ochjno. The people here are generally decent people. Right? Just ask them politely, and for the love of God don't put them in the ER like last time...

A slight twinge of pain ran across Liutgard's face as she recalled something. It was gone in a flash-too fast for most to notice, although some might.

Theomer Eorling

Eseir Inn, Leuda, Free Lands of the Selkie.

A hearty mutton stew, something both the Selkie and any ruralite Dancerian can get behind. Theo intended to be one of the tidiest denizens of the dorm, and waited patiently his turn for a hearty bowl of stew. Between his early morning runs and any other activities, he would definitely put the local cuisine to good use.

Crossing himself and the food subtly, a silent grace was said and health wished upon the hosts and his fellow students, and thanks was said to the butler once served; his selkie surprisingly crisp and well rounded, though his vowels seemed to bow in in the throat-but that was more his own manner of speech. Between the syntaxical nature of Sindarin and the sounds of any Temple and Church in Danceria rung with chants to their divine patron-doubly so for one of the Eastfold, where church and ranch were the two pillars of the rolling plains.

While the honorable Madame Glantar brought about the seemingly common-sense (at least to Theomer) that maids should neither be ogled nor patronized, a strange line of thought entered Theomer’s mind. How much of his own happiness would he set aside for the sake of Galanis’ vision…?

He had trusted the man, who practically raised him, gave him opportunities beyond an irrelevant cowhand from the shores of the Entwash. Yet it was clear that the reverend had hoped that Theomer and Erika would find some relationship. Needless to say, the opportunities for speaking face to face were few and far between. Theomer was sure that Princess Erika was a nice lass...he thought. But marriage was to be of love...right?

Banishing those thoughts aside, Theomer turned to… “<<Ms. Blaidd??>>” the blond man asked quietly, as to not draw attention to himself or the conversation, his Selkie equally as subdued but perhaps overly crisp. A habit for someone uncertain of their own skill in language. “<<Do you know if there are any introductions for the clubs?>>”

The Selkie wrote:Professor Zane Fuip of the Tribe of Cork.

Cieline Hoffnung and Santino Contarini
Odd name for a city, yes. But it had a long story to why it is called alongside it's location around the south of the mountains. And presentations were more important now so; Santino gave only a quick reply respectfully to Liutgard.

"Yes, our city has the same name than the city in North Osea of Ace Combat. It's a long story to why the city is called like that even if it's a millenium older than the one of the game..." He replied to her respectfully. It was indeed a long story that could take quite a while, more considering it's history.

Meanwhile his girlfriend looked at their hostess in the Inn, Ma'am Asteria Glantar. From what it could be seen, she was kind and someone nice, having something like an mother's aura in a way surprisingly. They heard what she was saying, well since they were to be staying here as guests it was clear that they would be treated as such.

After she talked about the maid issue, they were free to have their dinner, gladly since they haven't nothing since their flight. It seemed they got themselves a feast for the looks of it, and their professor got a glare from Asteria that said about who was to blame in case they had any problems with the food; it got them laughing a bit before finally waiting for their turn to eat for their first time some local cuisine, which they were gladly waiting. The first ones to be served were the elders, Ida being the first one since she was the oldest of all presents after the butler went first to Elin since she was an animal spirit which speaking of, they should ask about their origins now that they can.

Meanwhile, they were reciving their food, they heard Theomer asking about the clubs; which made Cieline ask too.

"True, I would like to know too..." Meanwhile she talked, Antonio noticed that Liutgard had a quick headche or so he believed to since it was so quick. It would be bad to not ask since it could be serious so...

"Did something happened?" He asked, showing concern while keep that cold and respectful attitude of his.

I stood at the door of the Eseir Inn. I was late, sure, but that didn't worry me. I had a valid excuse; my flight had been delayed.
Of course, that wasn't the real reason I was late. In reality, I had taken some time after arrival to buy a good bit of coffee. I would need it; the flight over had been hellish and turbulent, and I had gotten a grand total of 30 minutes of sleep. Hopefully, I had enough caffine in my system to last me until the night.

My name, in case you couldn't tell my the little bold text above, is Charlotte Northam, of Bayerland. Bayerland's a decent place to live. It's a little like America, except with a sensible firearms policy, a British accent, and a political system that doesn't devolve into a shitshow every 4 years.

We even have hamburgers and obesity.

That aside, I was born in Sheepshead Bay and all told had a pretty normal childhood. Learned English as a kid, ran around doing kid stuff, yadda yadda yadda.
So, why was I here? Well, the Selkie had come up during a middle school history class. Nothing more than a passage and a few references, but my intrest was piqued, and I did more research, and more, and more, ended up teaching myself a bit of the language, and now here I was, in the Free Lands, on a student exchange program.

During COVID-19, you might ask? The Spanish flu of the modern era? Well, yes. Bayerland had been spared the worst of it by simply locking the borders during the first wave, and heavily scrutinizing the people coming in after that. A few people had died, yes, but the medical system should be able to cope.

Right, enough exposition.
I took a deep breath, and entered. "Hope I'm not too late?" I asked.

While the stew was distributed, the first ones already digging in, and the first conversation already began (Miss Hoffnung and Mister Eorling were questioning Miss Blaidd on something, Miss Fischer was having a short flash over her face, Mister Contarini asking her if everything was alright), someone arrived: The young woman came in through the main door, the lass at the reception desk directing her left to the Main Portal.

"Not by too much.", I said and smiled welcomingly, motioned to one of the free chairs, "Lay down yer stuff and join us for dinner. We'll introduce you later. I'm Professor Fuip, by the way, we were in letter contact, Miss... Northam, right?"
I was not sure, if it was her, but I had the feeling, that it was her. We asked the students to send along photographs for a reason...

As Theomer asked me about introductions to the clubs, I had a spoon full of Stobhach in my mouth. I smiled, especially as Celine asked, too, and raised a finger, asking for a moment as, well...
...I still had my mouth full with Stobhach.
It took me a moment to swallow.
Theomer's English was quite good, though.
"Sorry.", I said and smiled, answering both of them in a volume for a normal table conversation between three people. "So, the Clubs... there aren't any formal introductions, mainly because not all clubs are represented here, but you should have gotten a list of clubs with the brochures. There should be persons of contact listed as well - some of which are at this table." I thought for a moment. "Well, technically one... myself. I am the person of contact for the UoL Swordsman Team. You are interested in joining? You talk to one of these persons and they take you along to a meeting." I used my spoon to stir one the stew in my bowl, used the other hand to take out the list's copy I had. "I'm not sure, if we have a spot free on the roster, but you can come along and see, what you are made of - if you want to join our team, that is. Which clubs would you two be interested?"

Liutgard
Oh for fuck's sake. My mental and emotional baggage was my own buisness, thank you very much, mister. Although I should probably practice my poker face better.
Of course, I couldn't say that to him publicly(at least, not without risking beatdowns), so I took a gulp of the stew, swallowed, and then replied. "Couldn't be better." I replied, a little too quickly, before taking another swallow. Hopefully, he would take the hint and quit pressing it.
Then a new girl arrived. I didn't catch her name, but something was off about her. I couldn't put my finger on it, though.

In the meantime, Cielene had responded to me, and after mulling over her answer, I spoke up.
"South Belka, you mean." I replied. Death to Osea. "Still, intresting. Your last name is...Hoffnung, correct? As in, 'hope'? I didn't peg Mervay as especially Germanic."

I nodded as I took a seat at the table. "Och, aye. That's my name. You are...Professor Fuip, correct? I do apologize for the delay, I had some complications."
It was somewhat true, at least.
"So, erm, Professor, did I miss anything vital?" I asked. "Any information on classes, clubs, people I ought to know, etc?"

I noticed one girl-an ashen-haired one- staring at me. I flashed her a smile and a brief wave, to which she responded only with a frown, followed by her going back to her soup, and then talking to someone else.

Huh. Odd. I should probably keep an eye out for her.

"Furthermore, I submit that Carthage NSG must be destroyed." t. Marcus Porcius Cato

IC name is "Blauveldt-Ryszana".

A traumatized, but recovering, MT-Early PMT/FanT constitutional monarchy consisting of a personal and constitutional union of two Realms. Features: near-universal gun ownership, governmental dysfunction, terrified Christinaslander Air National Guard personnel counting down the days until they rotate back home, and an eternal standoff with the last of it's former oppressors.

Cieline Hoffnung
It seems Elin was caught just in a bad moment considering she was busy eating her Stobhach; ouch... It certainly was a bit embarassing to interrupt around that moment, but thankfully it wasn't important.

"No need to apologize for that." Cieline smiled at her, it's not like what happened was a big deal for the three of them.

She begun to explain them about the clubs which was a small recap of what they should had readed when they enrolled in the university, it included some of the clubs and who's person to contact to see if they could join, but nothing more. Of course she then added that as soon as they talk with that contact and tell them their interest to join said club to then be invited into a meeting where you come to the conclusion of joining or not.

Cieline grabbed the copy of the list and readed for a minute before handing it over to Theomer. Thinking about the spirit's question while returning back to eat a bit for a minute before answering.

"Well..." She moved her finger to her chin while thinking about it. "If my mind doesn't betray me, I remember well that I could join two clubs at most, and I was interested in the archery team and the society for the establishment of a Sensha-Do team. Sadly swordsmanship isn't my strong suit, my apologies for that."

Santino Contarini
He did noticed the hint, if she wanted to be alone and face those issues on her own was up to her, he won't get involved if that's what she wanted. He just sighed as she told him all of that.

"Whatever you say, if you say so..." Santino just glared at her sighing and returned back to eat silently.

Meanwhile Celine put her focus in what Liutgard told her, answering her question.

"Correct, my surname is Hoffnung. And yeah, there's some Germanic population but it isn't especially Germanic since there's other groups there that are more majoritarian. It's a long story to tell you in a single sentence or talk and would require a much in deep conversation..."
