Hm. Why did Constantinople get the works? That'a nobody's business but the Turks.

...I get that joke.

That being said, here's a few reasons:

Constantinople's name wasn't officially changed to Istanbul until 1930, during the reign of Mustafa Kemal's republic.

The Ottomans didn't like changing names that much. For all of Ottoman history, they kept using Konstantinyye, or Constantinople. However, there were other names that they used. Asitane ('the capital'; as in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan), and Der Saadet ('the door of happiness'). Most people called it Stanbul or Istanbul, but the name used when the Ottomans slowly started declining was Der Saadet in official correspondence.

There are two major theories as to why it's named Istanbul.

Theory one is that it was originally called Islam-pol, as in 'the city of Islam', or Islam-bol, 'there is an abundance of Islam', and that the name just changed over time. I find this theory hard to believe, because with such an emphasis on Islam, it'd be hard to change its name even over hundreds of years (see: Mecca, Medina).

Theory two is that it comes from the greek Stin-poli, which means 'To the city'. This theory is also pretty hard to believe, because giving a major trading port a name that's literally directions to a city is basically a non-explanation.

A theory I found on Quora which makes a lot of sense is that it comes from the word Stan, a Slavic word meaning 'a flat', but it was originally used to mean something similar to a yurt (in Altaic). Since it was such a major city, northern tribes began calling it Mikligardur, which means 'home city' or 'standing city'. In Greek, this would be Histampolis. As Turkicization took place under both the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey, the name slowly changed to Istambol, and then Istanbul.

Macau is also Irish with an Irish population. So are Australia and New Zealand but that's just par for the course.

I bought it from China thinking it could make me some money. That never really panned out and with the wealth coming from New Ireland over in Amerikay I didn't really care. So without anything better to do I just made them Irish.

Oh and the English Monarchy is Colombia with a Fitzgerald at the head of it.

Anyone seen any Islamic/Russian/Byzantine portraits be revealed yet for CK3? I have seen plenty of Western Europe and Scandinavia, but none out of the more easterly regions.

One thing that annoyed me back when I used to play EU4 was that when american culture spawns its fixed into the English culture group. And who you conquered the continent with does not matter at all. Even if there are literally no english related settlements on the whole thing (which was not a problem to do back than) you'd still have your empire wrecked by having an unaccepted american culture suddenly appear out of nowhere that's completely opposite to your own on account to being hardcoded as english. Has that ever been fixed?
Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

As far as I know they only spawn as part of English settlement in the new World nowadays. Your Castilians will become Mexican and Portuguese Brazilian wherever they settle. But no Cajuns or Québécois for the French for some reason.

So an all French america remains French? That's good to know. Sucks to conquer the english and exterminate their nobility only to have them come back in EU4 as america.

Bralia wrote:I went to 100, my brain was highly arbitrary about what got chosen at any given moment.

I originally gave myself ten minutes to do this, but after ten minutes I was still remembering new cities every few seconds, so I worked on it for another ten minutes. Here's 20 minutes of me wracking my brain:

192 cities. There are definite gaps in my knowledge in southern and eastern Europe - I remembered more city names in Denmark than in Spain, even though by any reasonable metric Spain is a much more important country than Denmark. I suppose this is also a reflection of what regions I tend to play lots of PDS games in. :p Furthermore, some of these cities I got purely by accident - Komi, Greece and Kemi, Finland, to point out two examples, are both the results of me fumbling around trying to spell some city in East Karelia I vaguely remember hearing about once.

I think people who play a lot of Crusader Kings II or Europa Universalis 4 have a disadvantage to those whose favourite PDS Grand Strategy is Victoria II or Hearts of Iron 4, because the latter two - perhaps understandably given their era - have a much greater focus on cities whereas the first two generally deal in province and region names.

All in all, a fun timewaster. Thanks for the link!

There are small communities of Irish Travellers, an itinerant ethnic group, living in South Carolina, Mississippi, Texas, and other parts of the American South. They still speak Shelta, the secret Irish Traveller language, though it's developed some distinctions over the last 150 years from what's spoken here.

Stream was pretty solid despite it not quite being your average "feature stream". They just . . . played the game. And in doing so they showed off a surprising amount. Even with a lot of sister-banging on the side.
