We have ruled in this past that people who are not technically politicians would not fall under political nicknaming so I don't think this would apply (viewtopic.php?p=36934752#p36934752). It is a flamey comment, but looks only towards that individual who is not in the game. So based on that, looks to be not actionable.

Can I have a second opinion on this please? He has been made a Life Peer which by its very nature is an entitlement to a seat in the House of Lords, which is a political institution. I'd argue that very much tips him into the side of being a political figure.

Life Peers were created by the Life Peerages Act 1958, and its long title is "An Act to make provision for the creation of life peerages carrying the right to sit and vote in the House of Lords", hence why his status as a Life Peer makes him a political figure.

I cannot rule on the substance of the report given my regular involvement in that thread; so I will offer no opinion on whether the comment constitutes trolling or not.

However, as one of the resident British mods, I will confirm that a life peerage is today equivalent to an appointment to the upper house of the UK Parliament; it is also a political appointment made on the recommendation of politicians.

Appreciate the additional thoughts from you both! Another uninvolved mod will take a look when they can.

Can I please have a clarification on whether this is due to language or whether it is because he has been classed as a politician by becoming a peer.

Reason being is that currently he has not as far as I am aware been invested as a peer as Parliment is currently in recess. So far the list published is comcerned it is just a notification of intent. Previous to this he was not a politician.

So if the ruling is because he is considered a politician on becoming a peer he has not yet become a peer and thus should not be considered political nicknaming. I made the comment on this basis that he is still just a newspaper man, I do not make a habit of making disparaging names for people considered politicians but if this is now considered the limit it would be useful to know for the future.

Thanks in advance to whoever makes the clarification.

Both, really. As to his peerage ... https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/p ... 48701.html Note the language, "The Independent’s largest shareholder Evgeny Lebedev has been made a life peer after being nominated by the prime minister Boris Johnson for his work in the media industry and support for conservation charities," past tense, "has been made a peer." And, just so you're clear, I didn't mention political nicknaming, I said trolling. It's a nuance, perhaps, and political nicknaming is a subset of trolling, but as I said in my warning post, "Contributes nothing, isn't funny, and has a sexual connotation."

Fair enough on language.

Athough I will say the news article is factually wrong if that is the past tense basis used. I understand why the media talk this way as to all intents and purposes the distinction does not usually matter in the slightest. But the official document which maybe I should have included above indicates it is yet to happen.

"The Queen has been graciously pleased to signify Her intention of conferring the following Peerages of the United Kingdom for Life."

However thank you for responding Farn, wish you a good evening. :)
