Meanwhile, Iran was caught wet by a BBC investigation for publishing fictitious Covid figures. The deaths in Iran are almost three times higher than health ministry records.
BBC wrote:The number of deaths from coronavirus in Iran is nearly triple what Iran's government claims, a BBC Persian service investigation has found.

The government's own records appear to show almost 42,000 people died with Covid-19 symptoms up to 20 July, versus 14,405 reported by its health ministry.

The number of people known to be infected is also almost double official figures: 451,024 as opposed to 278,827.

The official numbers still make Iran the worst-hit in the Middle East.

...Since the outbreak of the virus in Iran, many observers have doubted the official numbers.

There have been irregularities in data between national and regional levels, which some local authorities have spoken out about, and statisticians have tried to give alternative estimates. .

A level of undercounting, largely due to testing capacity, is seen across the world, but the information leaked to the BBC reveals Iranian authorities have reported significantly lower daily numbers despite having a record of all deaths - suggesting they were deliberately suppressed.

Did China have a transparent government with good human rights when the SARS outbreak occurred? I think the political situation was better in some ways, but it was still the CCP and Westerners were still harping on them as if nothing had changed since Tiananmen Sq.

If you maintain that SARS outbreak was contained because the Chinese government was better back then, it means the West needs to rethink the way they talk about China.

If you maintain that the West has been right to criticize China so harshly all along, then you must also acknowledge that the difference between SARS and COVID is in the virus itself. (The viruses do behave differently and COVID is much easier to spread unknowingly. SARS is easier to track because there is not a lot of asymptomatic or presymptomatic spread.)

Comparing with MERS is just ignorant. MERS is still around. It was never contained, and yet it doesn't infect many people because it just isn't very contagious.

I know about MERS, and don't call me ignorant. I'm referring to an event on a similar scale: maybe it sticks around for a while but doesn't really do too much damage to societies as a whole.

Meanwhile, about two thirds of Trump's covid bailout for small businesses apparently had just flowed to China. Good job.
NYT wrote:Millions of dollars of American taxpayer money have flowed to China from the $660 billion Paycheck Protection Program that was created in March to be a lifeline for struggling small businesses in the United States. But because the economic relief legislation allowed American subsidiaries of foreign firms to receive the loans, a substantial chunk of the money went to America’s biggest economic rival, a new analysis shows.

According to a review of publicly available loan data by the strategy consulting firm Horizon Advisory, $192 million to $419 million has gone to more than 125 companies that Chinese entities own or invest in. Many of the loans were quite sizable; at least 32 Chinese companies received loans worth more than $1 million, with those totaling as much as $180 million.

“The extent and nature of P.R.C.-owned, -invested and -connected entities among the P.P.P. loan recipients indicate that without appropriate policy guardrails, U.S. tax dollars intended for relief, recovery and growth of the U.S. economy — and small businesses in particular — risk supporting foreign competitors, namely China,” wrote Emily de La Bruyère and Nathan Picarsic, the co-founders of Horizon Advisory, referring to the People’s Republic of China.

It seems the coronavirus might be the nail in the coffin to populism both in the US and worldwide

Thoughts? Populist leaders, left and right, seem to have mishandled the coronavirus mores than moderate leaders, examples are Bolsonaro, Trump, Mexico’s socialist president AMLO, Nepal’s communist Prime Minister Oli, Putin, and Indonesia’s Jokowi. I don’t know if Boris Johnson can really be considered populist, but he screwed up as well.

At least 40 passengers and crew on a Norwegian cruise ship have tested positive for Covid-19, officials say.

Hundreds more passengers on the MS Roald Amundsen are in quarantine and awaiting test results, the company that owns the ship said.

Operating cruises in the current situation is grossly negligent. And shame on the passengers also, who thought it was a good idea to go for a cruise right now.

Indonesia is a little bit different as all political blocs can be considered populist, but all of them are also hypocritical opportunists willing to form coalition with anyone if it serves their interests. In the last election, Jokowi isn't the populist candidate; it was Prabowo, a chauvinistic ex-general from military dictatorship era backed by radical Islamists. Now, Prabowo is the minister of defense.

Other potential 2024 candidates are probably Governor Ganjar Pranowo, which is basically Jokowi's successor, and Governor Anies Baswedan, governor of the capital who came into power through the mobilization of Islamism and actual racism.

Holy smokes, I did not expect such a number. For manipulations of case numbers, you’d expect a few thousand to tens of thousands being hidden, but no, the numbers are actually two or three times higher?

I have not read, but I definitely agree with the sentiment already. We’re observing a similar phenomenon over here with Duterte. The pandemic is bringing out more flaws and issues with how the supermajority and the administration handles the spread and how they rule over the country in general.

I used to believe that Duterte had at least been doing his best ruling the nation with considering options from both sides, but his admin’s handling of the pandemic has thrown that in the rubbish bin.

No; I meant how social distancing is a cause of it.

Because you don't go to your job, you think you don't have to get up early, so you stay up way longer than your normal bed time, so you wake after lunch time and either stay up way past your normal sleep time again, or your body goes into "rest" mode and you go to bed early and still not feel rested etc.

Will it end it? Nah. There are still enough people who will ignore the evidence and what not or worse believe in the conspiracy theories.

Trump could very well loose the election due to his incompetence over managing covid. The tanked economy and preventing social assistance will add to it as well.

If Trump looses, he will most likely go on the “I was robbed by deep state” conspiracy channels which will keep populism alive.

Operating cruises in the current situation is grossly negligent. And shame on the passengers also, who thought it was a good idea to go for a cruise right now.

People actually went on a cruise right now? I don't blame the crew, who probably didn't have a choice, but the passangers? Well, you can't fix stupid

We must be forgetting all the disasters that happened under establishment leaders, like Katrina or the war in Iraq.

No thanks, I'd rather not go back to the bad old days of the fake status quo.
