Saladon Nomads
First year in the Saladon Northlands
This land was cold and the wind chilled the nomads, but was not particularly harmful. Strange beasts dotted the plains, stranger then that was seen before in the south. Varrus felt like he and his fellow nomads could make due. This would be their new home for the following few years. Even if it wasn't the ideal home.

Varrus continued that what he had always done, forage. Fara continued her work on designing the idea Lana had provided, and Lana began collecting tubers to trade. Fortunately Varrus had noticed a strange tribe in the south east, back when they first came to the plains. They held up in a canyon, filled with large and beastly creatures. Varrus thought that perhaps he could trade the food of the plains with the tribe in return for hides. He knew that it would probably be beast to get something to keep him and his fellow nomads warm. All was well on the verdant plains.

Fara (scholar, F): attempting to make a bow
Lana (worker, F): collecting tubers to trade.

Lu and Bo go try to plant breadfruit in order to farm it
Manu and Ing go hunt child birds
Vinta goes gather breadfruit for eating
The children are being watched, taught about their culture and playing with megablocks
Carn'e is starting to help work on scholarly work on farming breadfruit

Seventh of Chillwind, Year Ten of the Reckoning

The pieces of broken stone Varya laboriously stacked atop one another, before bending down to take up a large glob of the black-gray sludge at her feet with a length of bark and slather it atop the construction. At her side Istvan grunted, placing another stone, and then another, in a careful line atop the sludge. Jarn and Maria both said that this lurid concoction would dry as hard as the stone itself, and though Varya was skeptical, she could trust their words at least decently, for the flecks that had touched her hands were already tough and unyielding.

Stone and the bones of the earth. To shape them was to touch the power of the Maker, and the lowly worker felt blessed to enjoy such a privilege. Istvan did not share their belief in the Father and the Mother, but he too was impressed with the many strange and wondrous things the Deepkin could accomplish, and moreover with Sylvia's golden locks. Varya did not begrudge him the attention - the younger woman had gone many years without a man where she had already had Petyor, and it was good to see a young happy couple in the village once more.

The village. Yes, it was beginning to look like a village. With the low wall around the Mother Tree offering a lee to shelter in against rain and wind, and the rising dwelling that the two were shaping soon to be more than just that, they were no longer nomads huddling under the protective branches of their revealed deity.

Jarn (Scholar) tends nut-grass planting, naming it 'einkorn', and exploring why it grows where it does further
Maria (Scholar) continues her work on the spear-projection implement
Varya (Worker) labors with cracked stone and mortar to raise a small dwelling
Petyor (Warrior) hunts bison with hand-blade and spear
Sylvia (Scout) hunts bison alongside Petyor with the same implements
Istvan (Wanderer) aiding Varya in her work, training to be more competent as a Worker
Natalya (Worker Aspirant) learning how to mix mortar and where to place shaped stones for stability
Tanya (Worker Aspirant) fires leaves and detritus for ashes for mortar
4 Children

Seasons come, seasons go...

If there is ought that troubles any tribe this year, it is unnoticed by the humble villagers and wanderers upon the face of the earth.

Warclyfe: There is ample food to eat this year. The efforts to transplant the breadfruit from the high mountains are unsuccessful, however, unfortunately. It is one thing to understand what is necessary to harvest the trees effectively, another to get them to grow in this foreign climate.

Deepkin: There is just enough food to eat this year - and Varya and Istvan have completed a small sturdy hut of the stone built into the palisade. No children are given to the village this year. The einkorn planting has grown in size, carefully tended, and the heads of the seedlings seem to be more productive than was previously the case.

The Corvidians: There is a grave shortfall of food this year, even with the aid in hunting that is the kinspirit wolves. In a near miracle, despite the starvation which afflicts all, only Corvan and Janon are taken ill during the winter. Casa, however, is not recovering, and her body seems to be growing weaker, burning away all fat and muscle which were her reserves of energy.

Cavon swiftly realizes that there is a peculiar collection of rain, wind, and soil quality which allows the verdant yellow grasses with edible seeds to grow where they will. If he finds other places such as these, he might be able to plant it close to the tribe, where gleaning the seed-heads for consumption would be a trivial affair.

West of north of north, Ceston roams. This is a wide country with immense forests that fall toward a distant coastline. North the forests continue marching, and south the familiar plains stretch. Boars snuffle about the roots of the trees here, and outcroppings of common shale jut from the woodland floor at intervals. Green stones with burnished sunlit cores are scattered about here as well.

The Aederfolk: There is plentiful food for all to eat. Cigfa has turned out another bone spear, and bears a happy girl-child at year's end. Cyhr is making a miraculous recovery, shaking off her illness swiftly, and is hale by autumn - whereas her young child continues to suffer from death's touch.

Khortuun: There is not quite enough food for all to eat to satisfaction this year - the small bean plot not yielding nearly as much food as harvesting in the wilds would do, and shrinking as hungry hands taken even young beans for hungry mouths. Fortunately, none of the tribe suffer for this lack, save the already stricken Seypelli, whose illness is growing more acute. Harro has managed to cobble together a woven-grass net despite the distraction of his hungry belly.

Machaka: There is more than enough food to eat. Indeed, there is much to be thankful for - Obi bears a healthy boy child in the summer.

There is good news this year. The Machaka have perfected some simple midwifery techniques, such as using rags hot with boiled water to staunch bleeding, to aid in the mysteries of childbirth.

Huanca: There is ample food for the tribe this year. Ninan has established a small potato planting near the village, which will no doubt be a boon for the future. Ynti also bears a child, a boy, though her labor if difficult and leaves her weak.

The Huang: With the tribe's attentions divided, not enough food is harvested this year, even after consuming their reserves. Chao and Tang both fall ill, though through the use of the tribe's last preparation of bitterroot Chao is prevented from developing a true sickness.

The Riverlanders: There is ample food this year. Disaster, however, strikes - a hot wind out of the west is blamed for the difficulty, but perhaps it is just ill-luck. At any rate, despite Bronwen's best efforts, the maize planting is shrinking.

The Pennenthelli: There is ample food this year. Despite the tribe's best efforts, however, Kathrilda's recovery is slow. As they feed and dote upon her a rosy color returns to her face, and her skin seems less like a hide stretched over a skeleton, but she is still weak and feverish.

The Nirari Band: The band eats well - quite well - and Lilitu is once more hale and hearty, able to move beyond her tent. The children are growing wild and strong, after the fashion of the tribe.

The Saladonian Band: The band eats well, dining on plentiful meats and the fat of the land. The tubers they gather are a welcome change from meat and horse, but it soon becomes apparent that if they mean to use them as a trade good they will need to find some way of preserving them, for those held across the seasons rot soon enough.

The theory is simple enough - to store might within a bent wooden object, and release it at will. It will take work to turn out a weapon with such characteristics, but the Saladonians understand the basics well enough now in theory.

The Hesukar Band: The band grows and flourishes, eating well on the meat of their many hunts. They decide to ignore the smoke in the south, for their numbers are still few to hunt men as the Black Kings command. Soon though, soon.

Thus ends the first decade, and so begins the second...

The Huang had known hunger before it was a harsh and unforgiving omen.Years had passed since the clan last suffered from malnutrition. These past few years they had known prosperity and full stomachs. Now hunger gnawed at the people of the Liu Clan a result of them not keeping the balance between their needs and desires. Both Chao and Tang would become sick by years end. They were kept in the hut and watched by the elders. Chao who seemed closer to death's door was given the treatment of the bitterroot and was soon hale once more. Tang while seeming more healthy was was still sick and needed treatment. His body shivered has sweats ran over it and his skin was pale. Liu Ming placed her hand on his forehead, it was burning hot.

The boy felt like a hornet was jamming it's stinger into the side of his skull. He coughed and sneezed and his body felt heavy all over. Ming comforted her child and did all she could. Most importantly she crafted a concoction of bitterroot. The medicinal herb had been a blessing to her people for countless generations turning away death and breathing new life into those who suffered from the spirits of disease and decay. Ming prayed to her ancestors for better and brighter days. The whole of the Liu Clan prayed to their ancestors for better and brighter days.

The Liu Clan carried onwards in heavy subsistence. If brighter days marked this year and food was plentiful like years past, they would celebrate and enjoy each other's company. If not well they didn't want to think of that in all honesty.

The Canyon-Dwellers
Year 11

Seypelli shivered. Shuddered. His body felt cold and clammy. Not his own, in a sense. But at least the air was warm. Or perhaps he was warm. The young boy didn’t know it, of course – didn’t have the sense or reason to truly grasp it – but the fever that burned beneath his skin was dangerously high. He did sense the wrong of it, however. It made his thoughts a jumble and his head a warm, lightheaded mess. He wasn’t hungry anymore either, although his belly was still as empty as ever.

When he blinked, he was somewhere else. Or somewhen. Time, too, had become a jumble. It was worst in the long span of hours in the middle of the day. Words were difficult then. His mother was there, mostly. In brief, broken moments. Helping him sip water from her cupped hand. Holding him. His father too – a shadow in the background – face pinched and eyes worried.

Then he blinked, and they were gone. Time shrank and shrivelled before his fever. Boiled and stretched beneath his skin, until his world spun and the only thing that made sense were his fever-drenched bed-skins.

And then, all of a sudden? There was a man, there in that dim, shallow little cave. Right there, by the far wall. A stranger.
Who did not move.
His mother was out, most likely – gone to fetch berries or water, or perhaps seeking respite from the cloying stink of his sickbed. The others had sought labors outside the cave long ago, Seypelli thought bitterly. They did not like watching him die.
But.
Blinking, Seypelli could see that what he thought was flesh was cool, milk-pale marble. A statue. A statue? …What? Before this. Before the heat of the fever and his mother’s soothing murmurs, his brother and he had drawn figures together in the mud, down by the water hole. Crude, gangly, faceless things. The stone figure by the far wall was nothing like that. Its face was the study of a man in contemplation; tall, gracefully poised, head tilted just so with a frank and thoughtful expression. The face was marbled grey and white though, with eyes – though Seypelli did not know the words – like alabaster and onyx. The artist who had shaped this creation had applied incredible detail; crow’s feet around the eyes and little lines in the lips.

Seypelli lay there, fevered and dying, and he knew beauty when he saw it.

But the statue was not there a moment ago. In fact, he was certain of this.

“Would you like to leave?”, the statue asked.

“…What?”

The man of stone had spoken. He had!

“Would you,” repeated he, with lips that did not move, “like to leave?”

And Seypelli grew cold. For though his fever-sick mind did not understand how something vast and mountain-still could speak and not move, there was a note of grinding finality in the stone-thing’s question.

He’s asking if I want to die.

“Nnnh… No!” Seypelli could barely muster the strength to move - let alone do more than bleat an answer. His body ached. His head swam. This was not real. It could not be!

By the far wall, the Stone Man sighed a sigh that was not a sigh and flecked alabaster teeth in something so very unlike a smile.

“I will return," he rumbled - with a sound like the scrape of stone lid. "Later.”

And then he was gone.

Harro (Male, 31, Scout) dedicates himself to the hunting of Brother Bird and Father Lizard; and puts his woven net to use capturing live specimens.
Kadima (Female, 31, Warrior) hunts – flint spear to hand - whatever creeps and crawls and flies.
Wylla (Female, 32, Scholar) redoubles her efforts to nurture poor, fevered Seypelli back to some semblance of health.
Matha (Female, 30, Worker) gathers mushrooms and beans in the wilds; and toils, in her spare moments, on the widening of the tribe’s poor, benighted bean plot.
Zebas (Male, 29, Scholar) joins Wylla at his son’s sickbed to offer what care and comfort he might.
Ohan (Male, 9) follows in his mother's footsteps, picking mushrooms with the best of them.
Yantewe (Male, 8,) gathers mushrooms as best he can, and joins Kadima on successive hunts.
Seypelli (Male, 8, Gravely Ill) wallows in fever-sweat, his shivering body still a plaything for vile spirits.
Ykka (Female, 3) draws crude mud-circles on the cavern walls, and picks mushrooms, wide and fleshy, for the cookfire.

The Pennenthelli

"I'm okay Av, really, come on there's work to be done. Let me help." Kathildra said with a weak smile and slightly tired tone as she tried to convince her bondmate to stop hovering around her at all times. "Nay love, you must rest. You're still feverish, some evils still linger within you and I won't rest until they have been driven far away, it's the only work that matters right now." He said tersely and covered her with another warm fur pelt as she laid in the bedroll. "I'm going to fetch you some more boiled water, you need to drink warm to get better." He said and squeezed her hand, planting a kiss on her warm forehead before leaving their teepee. He shuddered as he heard Kathildra cough back in the tent, it still rattled him, it still woke him from the deepest sleep. He sang praises to the Gods, thanking them for their aid to him. The year had been terrible, with his beloved slipping in and out of fevered hallucinations as the evil spirits that inhabited her took control of her mind from time to time. She wasn't fully recovered yet and he would still need to be by her side, as he swore to himself, the would not dig another grave in that little woodland glen where his daughter rested, one grave was quite enough.

As he went to get some hot water he could see Jenwin standing with her son, trying to teach him how to spin the sling and fling small rocks at a nearby fir. That brought a smile to the chieftains face as his own son was bubbling about the settlement. Little Ahleth has his mother's deep green eyes and a small tuft of his father's mousy brown hair, the chief was looking forward to sitting with his son and feeding his developing mind with knowledge that he would one day wield like Henimen wields his weapons for the benefit of the Pennenthelli. When the situation starts stabilizing and his beloved was healthy, Avunan was considering to move the tribe southward along the river to where Jenwin had gone on to find a land similar to their current home, wide vistas of green and yellow grasses broken up by woodland copses and the occasional rocky hill and escarpment. There was no Sundrop ore but there were also no serpents, so it would be safe to fish the river and there were sweet berries in great abundance. But that was an issue for the years to come.

Avunan (Scholar - M - 26): Cares for Kathildra day and night, treating her with the medical knowledge they have and trying to refine it.
Kathildra (Scholar - F - 25 ): Laying in her bedroll in hers and Avunan's tent, resting and gaining her strength.
Henimen (Warrior - M - 27): Hunts game in the plains alongside Jenwin armed with the spear and bow.
Jenwin (Scout - F - 26): Hunts game alongside Henimen armed with the sling and work-blade.
Latozar (Worker - M - 26): Forages for food in the woods. Crafts a second Bow for the tribe using the axe to get good quality wood for it in his spare time.
Ronan (Kid - M - 8): Playing, learning how to hunt (warrior training) with his parents and being taught the culture and faith of his people.
Ahleth (Infant - M - 2): Doing toddler things, being watched over by the adults.

The Nirari Tribe
Land of Plenty, Habitation Year 4

Lilitu finally had recovered from her difficult birth. She was up and helping the tribe as she typically could and went off to explore down river to see if that region would be more suitable than the plains to their south for the coming migration. As she went off, it left Niun and Melein with the children and an interesting scenario. With three young boys, they knew that for the tribe to survive in the coming generations, they would need to find other tribes for them to have their sons wed with. For now however, the tribe would have to make due with their current numbers. Knowing that in the near future they would be deciding where to migrate to again, Melein began to work on creating bone spears. While Niun and Lilitu already had exquisite bows, should they need to find other tribes, they wished to be better armed in case of a fight. While they haven't found another tribe in some time, they had to be prepared. They were too small and with too many children to be unprepared for such an event.

Niun - Male (24) Warrior: Crafts Spear from bone, Hunts near the camp
Lilitu - Female (23) Scout: Explores Down River (direction North?)
Melein - Female (25) Worker : Crafts Spears from bone
Isrid - Male (5) Child - Child Things, camp chores
Tyris - Male (5) Child - Child Things, camp shores
Varys - Male (2) Child - Child Things

Saladon Nomads
Second year in the Saladon Northlands
Unfortunately, their attempts to obtain tubers to trade was all for naught. They spoiled and rotted, long before the nomads attempted their journey to trade. If they wanted to do such a task, they would need to work their way to preserving such plant life. Fara began scheming up her own plans to preserve the brown like plants. As Lana began crafting her long awaited bows. Varrus would do what he needed to do for their group like always. All was quiet on the verdant plains.

First of First Seed, Eleventh Year of the Reckoning

The pale white cloak which Sylvia wore was not as white as he would have wanted. That was the thought that ran through Jarn's mind as he considered the two people before the base of the Mother Tree. It was an ancient cloak, descended from his father's fathers, of a great white wolf that had stalked the clan during the First Winter. It looked resplendent on her anyway, for all that the years had dimmed its brilliant beauty.

It was not often that the people of the Deepkin got to perform the Ceremony of Joining. It had been nearly a dozen years since Jarn's own Joining, and that had been the last. But Sylvia and Istvan, though he was a foreigner, were besotted with each other, and as such it was only right that they be bound in the bonds of sacred tie. Better to acknowledge love and leave it requited than allow it to fester. The master of the small band advanced on the beaming couple, a short length of rope bound with copper ornaments in his hands.

Slowly he wound it around both of their forearms as they gripped eachother close, a complex pattern winding over both elbow and about their wrists.

"As these bonds tie you together, so may your spirits be tied in eternity, before the witnesses here today, and the Mother close, and the Father far. Bear these bonds with honor, with love, with patience, and with passion. As the Creator bound man and woman together in the first Joining, be now joined today!"

With that he slashed the last strand of rope between them, and the bands separated, now merely an intricate and beautiful webwork that covered each of their dominant forearms. The marriage bands would not be severed in this life, and in the field, in the village, and all other places any who looked upon either member of the joining would be aware that they were taken by another, inextricably bound together as the Creator first willed it.

And then they all fell to feasting, on hearty bison meat, on spiced einkorn gruel, on herbs of the field and tubers and pork from the distant boars just for flavor. It was a good day.

Jarn (Scholar) tends the einkorn planting, seeking to understand it more fully and the conditions where it grows
Maria (Scholar) continues her work on the spear-projection implement
Varya (Worker) is gathering the Healer's Hand
Petyor (Warrior) hunts bison with hand-blade and spear
Sylvia (Scout) hunts bison alongside Petyor with the same implements
Istvan (Wanderer) aiding Varya at her labors, training to be more competent as a Worker
Natalya (Worker Aspirant) learning how to distinguish the vital medicinal herbs from wild flowers and poisons
Tanya (Worker Aspirant) observes how the adults dry and carefully press the blue-green leaves of the Healer's Hand for later
Ivan (Warrior Aspirant) stays in the village, learning how to butcher a kill from Petyor
3 Children
All three couples are seeking children

Another child is welcome into the Huanca and brought joy to its parents. Though at the cost of Ynti's health, she is weak and is resting after her ordeal. With Koyakusi taking up the task of tending to her until she gets better and Jaylli helps him with this. In his spare time, Koyakusi prays at the shrine and made offers to the gods that Ynti gets better. Praying in particular to Izotl, the sun god and leader of the gods. He hopes she gets better soon and not get worse. Meanwhile, the tribe has continued their tasks laid before them. Achik still hunts for food, and with Jaylli busy helping to tend to Ynti. He has taken up the task of caring for his children when he is not on hunts. Ninan tends to the newly created potato farm while caring for her two children. Sons of Corvus, Year Eleven

Hard times fall upon the sons of Corvus this year - Casa's helping hands are sorely missed in the harvest, and their stomachs go empty for large portions of the year. Thankfully, the deity ancestral spirit of Corvus has lent his generous helping hand to them - only two children go sick during the long and difficult winter. Unfortunately, Casa does not grow better. She grows weaker and thinner still, and Corvin fears that she may not be able to recover.

Cavon, however, has made a small breakthrough. In his investigation of the yellow seedplant, he and Juvon discover that the seeds are edible. While not the most delicious food, they are filling enough, and they are numerous beyond measure. If they could plant some close to the tribe...it would be like plucking food straight from the earth.

Unfortunately, this project must be delayed. With multiple members of the tribe growing sick from starvation and hunger, food is the first and only priority among the sons of Corvus this year. In the back of his mind, Cavon worries - it will still be many years until the children are able to contribute helping hands. Will they be able to provide for all these hungry mouths? If Casa dies...he shudders to think of what may happen to their settlement.

Ceston has a strange dream - of a river that flows from the real world into the far horizon, beyond where his eyes can see - travelling into the spirit world. And this river...is in the plains. Is it a vision? Is it a dream? Or is it merely his desire to wander among the familiar lands of his people once again? Regardless, he departs to the South, quickly bounding over territory previously explored and traversed. He searches for a spouse among the plains, though he has steeled his heart for disappointment yet again.

Corvin (M, Warrior, 31) continues to hunt gazelle with the Sling with his pack of loyal companions. Even they grow thin this year, and they whine incessantly for scraps and bits of tasty meat.
Corvan (M, Warrior Trainee, 9, Ill) rests, not following his father on the hunt this year.
Cavon (M, Scholar, 29) realizes that there are too many mouths to feed with Casa being ill, and forgoes any research to gather yams with his wife Juna. The secrets of the wheat can wait.
Juvon (M, Scholar Trainee, 8.) gathers yams with his parents, attempting to assuage his own hunger.
Casa (F, Worker, 31, Gravely Ill) lies in the shelter of the dugout, her life seemingly a mere hand-breadth from becoming unwound...
Juna (F, Worker, 29) is reluctant to leave her sister in law relatively unattended, but does so to gather yams.
Ceston (M, Scout, 25) scouts Southwest of the tribe, quickly bounding over previously explored acres of grain.
Janon (M, Worker Trainee, 6, Ill) rests.
Jana, Lupen, Lopen, and Cara (Children) play in the safety of the fence.

Cavon and Juna attempt to have another child, though they both know that the end of her child-bearing years is coming soon.

In case of scarcity, food is prioritized as follows: Casa > Janon/Corvan > Juna > Children > Corvin/Cavon.

The River Folk, at the Mouth of the Riverlands

O, the fickle lady that is Fortune! The farm in peril, at no fault of the Riverfolk but simply misfortune rearing its ugly head. Despite this, they had no choice but to continue onward, Bronwen determinedly tending to his crop.

Magnus (M, Scholar) - Spends time amongst the stalks of maize in the planting, seeing how different plants grow and which are better or worse. (Selective Harvesting)
Eliana (F, Scholar) - Gathering food for the clan, a mix of maize and any other edibles available.
Katrina (F, Worker) - Gathering food for the clan, a mix of maize and any other edibles available.
Bronwen (M, Worker) - Tending to the maize planting, caring for it and letting it grow.
Varin (M, Scout) - Gathering food for the clan, a mix of maize and any other edibles available.
Fiona (F, Youth) - Helps her mother Katrina gathering, learning the best ways to harvest maize.
Anduin (M, Child) - Does baby things

Both couples try for a child.

Lu and Bo go try to learn how to smith copper or at least comprehend it
Manu and Ing go hunt child birds
Vinta goes gather breadfruit for eating
The children are being watched, taught about their culture and playing with megablocks
Carn'e is starting to help work on scholarly work on farming breadfruit

Seasons come, seasons go...

The storms rumble over the plains when they ought, and sunshine falls from a dappled sky in life-giving rays. In the grasslands of the Corvidians and the Deepkin, plants sprout with wanton abandon, making one year do for three. There will be a bountiful harvest of all growing things this autumn, a boon for those who live in the flatlands.

Warclyfe: There is ample food to eat this year. The scholars of Warclyfe have also had a breakthrough - almost as soon as they have turned their minds to the puzzlement of the beautiful copper ore, they realize that it can be heated over a low flame to make it malleable, or held in a slightly hotter fire and it will melt completely into a viscous liquid.

Deepkin: There is a great bounty of food this year. The workers have gathered many medicinal herbs, which sprout in great numbers beneath the spring rains. The einkorn planting has expanded, spurred on by the good weather. Sylvia and Istvan welcome their first child, a boy, and Istvan has completed his training as a worker.

Maria's work on a sheath for the spear, to launch it at great velocities, has born fruit. The gleaming ivory contraption she presents to the hunting band is welcomed for its ability to pierce the thick pelt of the bison over a great distance. Perhaps now the tribe will not have to drive them over cliffs to their deaths in order to make a kill.

The Corvidians: There is plentiful food this year, mainly on account of the good harvest and weather. The yams are succulent, and larger than any the tribe has seen before. Tragedy, however, stalks the village. Mere food is not enough to hold back the hungering spirits. Though Janon and Corvan recover as many have before them, Casa's illness proves to be too great. One day the gatherers return to the village to find her body still and cold, all spirit and verve removed from within. Darkness hangs over their heads as they weep the fallen.

Ceston, of course, knows nothing of this sorrow. Venturing south and west of his homeland, he comes to a place of wide grasslands, grasslands which extend both south and east. Away to the west the lush warm plains grow thick with brilliant emerald trees, trees above which a mist seems to hang endlessly and over which storm clouds rumble and roll. Brilliant veins of pitch-black metal mark this landscape, and lustrous dun gray ore in equal measure. Stands of fluffy white seedlings can be found here too.

The Aederfolk: There is plentiful food this year. The Aederfolk take advantage of this downtime to finish the hut that has stood ready for completion for some time. Their ill child has also recovered nicely.

Khortuun: There is ample food this year, a welcome occurrence for the canyon-dwellers. Harro's attempts to take some of his prey alive have been successful, capturing three of the large fat lizards that like to sun themselves on the broken rocks of the valley floor. Though the tribe's straggling planting of beans is not growing as they tribe would wish, it does not seem likely to perish from the earth in the immediate future, and is recovering. That is not all there is to be thankful for though - Seypelli's strength is gradually returning, and though he babbles still in fever-dream, the worst seems to have passed him by.

Machaka: The tribe has ample food to eat this year - Furaha Eze's goals, however, seem difficult to achieve without a specific focus.

The Huanca: There is plentiful food for the tribe to eat this year. Though the potato planting is not expanding, Ynti is hale once more and up and about the village, her birth sickness dispelled by either the gods or simply lots to eat and rest.

The Huang: There is plentiful food this year for the tribe to eat. Ming has prepared a new dose of medicinal poultice for the tribe's use, and treats Tang with it during the winter, for his recovery is slow. By the end of the season he is feeling hale once more. What is more, Liu Ming bears a healthy daughter come springtime, a fortunately easy pregnancy as the tribe has no poultices in stock to treat any birth sicknesses with.

The jadegrass is a strange thing, living entirely below the water's surface at most times, and growing a small nutritious bulb at its base where it is anchored into the soil. It is not like the edible grasses the Huang were looking for, but it soon is clear to Tao that if he works hard at planting and nurturing this crop, it might form the basis of a sustainable food system for the tribe. The conditions it grows in will limit it to the river depths, or to flooded fields, but it is tasty enough and nutritious if gathered in large quantities.

The Riverlanders: The Riverlanders eat well, their food plentiful. Under careful nurturing the maize planting is growing in size once more. Unfortunately no children grace the tribe this year.

By carefully selecting which families of maize seem to grow best, and only harvesting those which grow small and less strong, the Riverlanders believe they might soon be able to make sure all of their maize is strong and hearty. This will no doubt reduce temporary food stocks, but have great implications for the future.

The Pennenthelli: There is plentiful food for all to eat this year. The villagers thank the gods that Kathrilda has now made a full recovery, from what was once a very serious chance of death. Latozar's attempts to cut a bow out of the young trees he gathers have to be delayed until the next year, the cold winter making him reticent to work on the tool when the chance of it breaking is so high.

The Nirari Band: There is not quite enough food for all to eat to fullness this year - a fact no doubt to blame on their expanding tribe. Their youngest, Varys, has taken ill with a winter cold, his weakened body not able to fight off the chills. This shortfall though is no doubt temporary, for with the weapons the tribe now wields, hunting will be quite easy.

Lilitu heads north, following the flowing river. The land here continues much as it does near their homeland, with the river running yet northward, a forest away toward the sunset, and the plains continuing both north and west. The orange gourds grow also in this land, though low lumbering bears with black fur can be seen here and there feasting on the vegetables. Beautiful tall blue flowers bloom in this place, atop tall stems.

The Saladonian Band: The band has plenty to eat, and Lana has managed to craft a simple bow. Fara tries many methods, but feels she is making little progress, her attentions unfocused on one method or another.

The Hesukar Band: Into a wild and strange new country the band ventures, gleaning and hunting as they go. Here the trees grow wild and tall, and forests surround this region to both the south and the west. North the endless taiga beckons, their old home. Great pines that stretch ten times as tall as their brothers are the most noticeable facet of this region, each so wide that it takes several minutes to walk around. Their rings of needles are so immense that they form wide natural clearings of brown soft forest floor. Beautiful clear rocks can be found in this region also, and the mammoths appear to come to this place to birth their young in the secluded forest depths.

Thus ends the tale of the year. Another now begins...

The members of the Liu Clan celebrated in a brief moment of enjoyment and leisure under the moon. Then it was back to work, fish wouldn't catch itself, and medicinal poultices wouldn't appear out of thin air. Everyone would work hard and do there part, even little Han and Chao would bring a fish or two, from time to time spurred by boyish competition to see who could bring the most food and who was the best out of the two. Meanwhile, Tao was interested in his working of the jadegrass. It turned out it wasn't a grass at all but some type of tuber. Even more so he had come to learn that the jadegrass was nutritious and delicious when eaten in sizeable quantities. He would keep the name even though their assumptions were proven wrong, it was not a grass but a tuber but the name amused him nonetheless. The jadegrass would make a wonderful break from the usual fish and water-buffalo meat they ate. He only wished that Ming his wife could help him in such matters but she was too busy crafting medicinal poultices. A worthy effort one that he couldn't complain about. Still, he could use her bright mind to figure out more about the jadegrass. Tao had been taught by the elders that hope was an illusion while he respected them and their wisdom he couldn't help but feel a tinge of it now. Especially now that the clan had a new potential source of food, one that would no doubt be extremely useful in the future.

The Canyon-Dwellers
Year 12

With slow, steady movements Harro hacked and heaved and dug. The blistering heat of noon was long behind them by then, and now the tall shadows of the rift lay deep and cool across the valley floor. His fellows had wondered at his doings at first, for it was a seldom thing to see the lanky wanderer till the earth of heave broken stone. “It’s for the lizards,” explained he. “To keep’em.”

Long, fat lizards sometimes enjoyed sunning themselves on the heat-soaked rocks. Harro could usually pick them off with a thrown rock. Kadima, spirits bless her, could even skewer one with a thrown spear if she got close enough. With hunger dogging the Khortuun as it did – and every year a new scrabble for survival – lizard meat was a welcome break from chewy beans or the mealy, flesh-coloured mushrooms that usually graced the tribe’s cookfire. Lizards, fat and succulent, were a delicacy.

The work was hard, of course. And done mostly by hand. Harro’s only tool was a lean, flint-knapped work-blade – a tiny thing better for scraping and cutting that hacking broken rocks from the earth. But all Harro needed was an edge. Enough to give his fingers a grip. Then he’d heave and haul and tug and, bit by bit – he’d be that much deeper, that much farther down into the cool, sandy earth.

“Are you sure this’ll work?” Kadima groused. She was the one who usually offered Harro the closest aid in these things. The two hunted together as often as not, after all – and when one had a plan or plot or ploy, the other was seldom hard to ask for aid. This, though? Heh. The wry glint in Kadima’s eyes even lingered ‘round her mouth as she squatted at the edge of Harro’s pit. “If you’re so sick of hunting you’d rather take up farming – just say so. We’d understand.” Harro, work-blade in hand, just straightened from his stop and fixed the war-woman with narrow, flinty eyes.

“It’ll work,” he drawled. “You’ll see. They’ll live down here. Breed down here. And we’ll pluck them at our leisure. Like beans.”

“Uh-huh,” nodded Kadima. It wasn’t actually a poor idea. In fact, the war-woman, thick of hair and black of brow, was actually sorry she hadn’t thought of it herself.

Ah, well. If it’d keep their stomachs from kissing their spines – and the fever-spirits from stealing their minds – hacking a pit from the broken, sun-scorched ground was worth doing.

Harro (Male, 32, Scout) dedicates himself to the hunting of Brother Bird and Father Lizard. In small moments however, he uses a flint work-blade to hack a pit from the sandy earth. Deep, dark and presumably lizard escape-proof.
Kadima (Female, 32, Warrior) hunts – flint spear to hand - whatever creeps and crawls. And if Harro requires help to finish his latest scheme, she'll lend her aid accordingly.
Wylla (Female, 33, Scholar) redoubles her efforts to free her son from the last of the spirits' grasp.
Matha (Female, 31, Worker) gathers 'shrooms and beans in the wilds; and toils, with her flint work-blade, on widening the tribe’s poor, benighted bean plot.
Zebas (Male, 30, Scholar) continues to assist Wylla at his son’s sickbed.
Ohan (Male, 10) follows in his mother's footsteps, picking beans and mushrooms with the best of them.
Yantewe (Male, 9) gathers beans and mushrooms as best he can, and joins Kadima on successive hunts.
Seypelli (Male, 9, Ill) tosses, turns and seems determined to cling to life. Hard and meager though it is - the spirits cannot have it. Not yet.
Ykka (Female, 4) sings songs of stony men and fire-forged women - and picks mushrooms, wide and fleshy, for the cookfire.

The Nirari Tribe
Land of Plenty, Habitation Year 5

The first year that there wasn't enough food, and the result was young Varys growing hungry and ill during the winter months. The young child was wrapped in the hides and furs that had been collected by the tribe to keep the winter chill off of him. Melein spent most of her time this year helping to keep the young boy safe while directing her twins to bring in some of the pumpkins to eat. Lilitu again went exploring after finding more bears along the river north of them. She went Northeast, into the forested region that she'd spotted there. Knowing full well that a camp with several children would be in danger with bears roaming about, she knew that it wouldn't be a safe option for the whole tribe to wander through.

Niun for his part, had gone back to hunting full time to provide fresh furs and meat for the tribe. The furs could help keep Varys warm and the meat could help the whole tribe in eating. He knew that they would be needing to move soon, and the health of Varys was quite an issue. If they moved while he was still ill, there could be some complications. However, if they didn't move, the whole tribe could be facing complications as the land they were on needed time to recover before being settled again. It was a slippery slope and the long term future of the tribe had to be considered before the decision was made. For now, Niun and Melein awaited Lilitu's return from the northeast to tell them if it would be better to go there or south for the next few years.

Niun - Male (25) Warrior: Hunts for food and furs
Lilitu - Female (24) Scout: Explores Northeast
Melein - Female (26) Worker : Cares for Varys, directs Isrid and Tyris in dealing with the pumpkins.
Isrid - Male (6) Child - Child Things, Rolling Pumpkins to camp with Tyris
Tyris - Male (6) Child - Child Things, Rolling Pumpkins to Camp with Isrid
Varys - Male (3) Child (ill)- Recovering in the Shelter

Huanca

Another year in Talagua and some good news for the tribe. Ynti is healthy again and walking around the village. Koyakusi thanked the gods for this and with his partner safe from illness. He has taken to study the potato more. Just learning how to grow things was not enough and for the farm to do well. He wants to learn more about the potato that provided for them for years. Ynti after a couple of years staying close to the village has finally got her wanderlust back and seeks to explore the land once again. Only this time before she heads out, Jaylli had a request for her. After years of being alone, she asked Ynti her to perhaps find someone out in the world for him. Ynti agreed to this request though is not sure if she can find someone in the wild. It has been years since coming to Talagua since the tribe has seen an outsider but, she will keep a lookout for someone. Meanwhile, Achik continues to hunt and care for his children and Ninan sets out to build another hut so everyone has a place to rest in the village. Leaving the job of tending the small farm to Jayll who takes this up dutifully. Things have been going well for the Huanca and Koyakusi hopes that things stay good for the tribe.

The Pennenthelli

Another year went by in the lands of the Pennenthelli as the lived, laughed and loved in their quiet existence. Their chieftain was fascinated about the lands in the south, but before that they had some things to do here. The Sundrop Ore, so plentiful in these lands could not be found in the south, indeed, Jenwin could not find it no matter how hard she looked and searched during her ranging two years ago. Somewhere deep within, he felt that he was not done with the working the ore. Before Kathildra's terrible sickness after birthing his heir, he had devoted every waking hour to make sure she would live, the work they had been doing had to wait. Aye, one grave in these lands was quite enough for the chief he thought as he brought back a few loose rocks of Sundrop Ore he had gathered from the rocky hills back to the settlement. He smiled as he saw his beloved bondmate sit and tend to the fire, holding an arm around their son as he looked around the camp with a bored look. She smiled back as he approached. He thanked the Gods, each morning before he left the tent and every evening before huddling up next to her in their bedroll. His focus had paid off, her life had been saved. He still didn't want to think back to the state she was in, but they would one day have to talk about the sickness, perhaps some of the things he did in the treatment could be used of Gods forbid another child, or any other member of the tribe for that matter was to fall ill.

Other than that things went silently as ever. At least in the day, with Jen back from her rangings and the atmosphere in camp less tense now that Kathildra was all well and good again, Henimen and his bondmate Jenwin were at it, as loud as ever as the rest of the tribe tried to sleep. In the day they took their son who was slowly growing into a strong youth in their hunts while he practiced with the sling that his mother let him use from time to time. It could however not be denied that the tribe's ranger was looking forward to Latozar finishing the bow he had begun working on last year as she always pestered her beloved bondmate to let her try and use it on their hunts. No doubt impressed with the capability of the mighty weapon able to strike from so far away. The Chieftain hoped that they would find a way to make something useful of the Sundrop ore, then they would have to try and work out if there was something of dire need for the journey southward that was at hand in one of the coming few years.

Avunan (Scholar - M - 27): Attempts to find a way to shape copper in order to make useful items out of it.
Kathildra (Scholar - F - 26 ): Helps her bondmate in his work to find a way to shape copper into tools and weapons.
Henimen (Warrior - M - 28): Hunts game in the plains alongside Jenwin armed with the spear and bow.
Jenwin (Scout - F - 27): Hunts game alongside Henimen armed with the sling and work-blade.
Latozar (Worker - M - 27): Finishes the second Bow and goes on to try and make some Work-Blades
Ronan (Kid - M - 9): Playing, learning how to hunt (warrior training) with his parents and being taught the culture and faith of his people.
Ahleth (Infant - M - 3): Doing toddler things, being watched over by the adults.
Henimen and Jenwin spend many nights together trying for a baby.
