The American Eviction Crisis: Countdown to Doomsday

Postby Kowani » Tue Jul 28, 2020 10:18 pm

 Source

On July 31, approximately 25 million people across the U.S. will stop receiving weekly $600 federal unemployment checks. Under new proposals by Senate Republicans, those benefits would be cut by 43% and replaced with a reduced weekly payment of $200 through September. That could have serious repercussions for tens of millions of Americans who have counted on the $600 payment as a crucial financial lifeline amid the economic havoc wreaked by the pandemic across the country. On top of that, the Federal Eviction Moratorium has expired, placing renters with federally backed mortgages at risk of losing their homes. It is estimated that they account for just over a quarter of all U.S. renters.

Even though White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow has hinted on an extension, the provision's expiration has allowed landlords to file eviction notices, though they won't be able to push people out of their homes for at least another 30 days. Combined with the cut in unemployment payments, it is likely to create the perfect storm for U.S. renters. An analysis from global advisory firm Stout Risius Ross estimates that more than 40% of renter households in the U.S. are going to experience rental shortfall during the Covid-19 crisis with just under 12 million facing eviction over the next four months alone. Around 17 million are likely to be impacted throughout the pandemic.

The analysis is based on Household Pulse Data from mid-July and it found that some states will be hit harder than others. For example, West Virginia is estimated to have the highest share of renter households facing eviction at close to 60%. Tennessee, Minnesota, Mississippi, Florida and Louisiana are all among the states set to be worst impacted with shares at 50% or higher. Elsewhere, Vermont is the state where renters will be at the lowest risk of eviction, though 22% of them will potentially lose their homes over the course of the crisis.

28 million people. The US is expected to see 28 million people out of their homes by October. 40% of all renters, expected to be unable to make their payments.

Image

Edit: Shofercia has informed me that 28 million is incredibly optimistic.
Shofercia wrote:Those numbers are way off: https://www.cnbc.com/2020/07/08/32-perc ... ments.html

Renters are especially vulnerable. About 36% of renters, who are more likely to work in industries devastated by the coronavirus, missed their July housing bill, compared to 30% of homeowners.

Presuming a 60-40% owner-renter ratio, and presuming that half of the homes are paid off, or soon to be paid off, that leaves 23.4% of Americans as being potentially homeless. Out of a population of 328.2 million, that's 76.8 million people, and that's before the nadir of the downshift economic spiral. If this isn't dealt with, by then end of 2021, as many as 100 million Americans could be homeless. So 28 million is incredibly optimistic.

So do you think President Trump will address this issue or will he just ignore it instead? Because if this isn't addressed we're going to have lots of homeless people walking the streets and it will also be a problem for the current pandemic that we're in.

I was wondering when this would make it to NSG.

This is an unprecedented socioeconomic cataclysm that's about to happen, and yet another indictment of rentier capitalism and the political system which has allowed it to transform into such a white elephant for public welfare.

I don't have a lot of faith in Trump's attention span or capacity for understanding. Both parties have presented ideas to deal with it in Congress, IIRC, but both alternatives are predictably meager in their reach and ambition. Palliatives for a chronically ill system.

Rent should really be abolished, but we could at least suspend it as well as evictions for the time being.

In fact, there's enough housing in the U.S. for everyone, only because they're "private property" it would be a crime to enter them. We should let anyone in need into these homes.

Hmm...maybe I'll be able to get a better place! ;)

Seriously though, rent is too damn high nationwide. Its been that way for years. Rent should match some proportion of the minimum wage or something. You should be able afford...fairly easily...at least a studio apartment working 40 hours a week on minimum wage with money left over for food, insurance, car payment, other things.

Actually I think this is so stupid they won't do it. Homelessness is a visible sign of social collapse, and not even saving some money would make Republicans think it's a good move.

Though I suppose there's the Gridlock Excuse. "We're not doing anything wrong, by not doing anything".

That's my point. By doing nothing at all now, they can precipitate a budget crisis for households. And probably blame it on Democrats too (the Gridlock Excuse).

Not all renting is passive income however. It's only the huge landlords that get to do that. A small landlord that has maybe an apartment or two very much has to work to keep these in a livable state, make sure the people living there don't do any damage etc. It's very much a full time job. Its only when you have so many that the income is so large you can farm these jobs out to a firm you own that your income becomes passive.

Really private property is not the problem here. The problem is accumulation of capital. It's only when people have so much private property that it becomes ridiculous that they become a problem.

To ask the cause of the problem, to then provide a solution to the problem, is to invite more causes for more problems.

Most certainly one will claim "Party X" or "Official Y" is the "cause of..." or "solution to..." And seemingly always at a federal level.

One wonders at the comprehension of "Federal" versus "Confederal" versus "Unity" when it comes to government types - especially the American type. "Trump" or "Obama"... legislators...

One is reminded of when Homer praised alcohol: "The cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems!"

There are many @sshat landlords, there are many genuinely honest and kind landlords.
There are plenty of #$#kwad renters, there are enough honest and responsible renters.

Forcing honest renters out of work (with broad lockdown, as opposed to targeted quarantine)...
Enabling abusive and destructive renters to squat - and refuse to use that $600 for its alleged purpose...

Asking government for anything - when in America it government who is to do the asking - is always the elevation of the sociopath.

The honest do not win elections - in any government, ever. Why in God's name would anyone trust someone seeking POWER?

Hand wringing over this or that issue - this or that "prophecy" of doom cause by "Party Y" or "Official X" (or "Race Z", or "Generation W"...)... that is infantile, solves nothing, and serves only to further the real rot that is gutting all of western civilization:

"Nothing is MY fault, so who do we blame, and force to fix it?"

"Save us Mr. Government! You caused this with your last salvation, so save us again!"

These are the marks of a people who have lost the capability for liberty - party affiliation being irrelevant.

These are the problems of cattle - not of a free people.

Cattle are protected and fed.

Private property is necessary though. Without private ownership over stuff people would be forced to share everything with everyone. And that is absolutely horrifying to no end given how bad people actually are. I mean, maybe if humans were actually good by nature that might work. But the very idea anybody would even contemplate such an eventuality is laughable.

I mean, can you imagine a world where anyone can just walk up to you and take anything. He is hungry so he just takes from your fridge. He is tired so he just sleeps in your bed. What are you to eat and where are you to sleep? Well go find someplace else. Take from someone else. Or worse yet live in some sort of communal hive. That literally sounds like hell to me.

How you can live in a developed country that's a Welfare State and has dozens of social safety nets like UHC and the like yet you're willing to make the same arguments that The GOP makes against those systems baffles me.

Just a few days ago you were arguing that the US is corrupt to the bone and now you're preaching the messages of the ones responsible for said corruption.

1. How you got to that interpretation from what I wrote is beyond the pale. 2. Like, seriously, are you drunk right now?
3. I am making an argument against the guy who wants to abolish all private property.

1. Because what you wrote and what the GOP tends to screech about every other month or so if you even mention expanding The ACA or Welfare are the same things.
2. No, I don't drink because I like to stay cognizant when people make stupid fucking arguments that deserve to be ridiculed, like your post is deserving of right now. :)
3. Yes, and those arguments happen to be word for word the same arguments a lot of the GOP makes against any form of social safety net.
