Have there been editors who never written issues? I wonder if that's ever been the case.

They even edited some of my previous issues (like the one about athletes doing drugs).

I'm not sure about the timing, but Sleep authored 4 issues.

How many of the shortlist issues weren't drafted on the forums? I know I didn't draft mine on here.

There was Kindly Professor Hell, who had the title of "Issues Tech", which I think carried the same powers as an "Issues Editor", just without the expectation of having to actually edit stuff.

I believe Sanctaria became an editor without any published issues.
Aibohphobia wrote:Thank you. A shame I didn't make it. More proof I suck as a writer while being great at editing.

A lot of us in the Top Ten weren’t immediately very good at issue writing. It takes practice for most of us mere mortals. If you keep writing and drafting on this forum, chances are good you can get issues into the game.
Outer Sparta wrote:How many of the shortlist issues weren't drafted on the forums? I know I didn't draft mine on here.

I drafted one almost entirely here, one entirely without the forums, and the one on the top ten I put the first draft here, but reworked the second draft without posting it here.

Sanctaria became an editor through an issues contest which necessitates having written an issue to get the job.

Bah, still never had one published.

By the way, in case anyone else is curious, there are 32 unique authors on the 48-issue shortlist.

I feel like your answer is a little pedantic when the question that was asked was if there were editors who hadn't written issues. I'm not sure of the timeline of events, so maybe Sanct didn't have one published at the time he was made editor, but he got the job because he wrote a publishable issue.

I know it’s pedantic, I don’t ever use "Bah" seriously :p

Actually, I vaguely remember hearing there was an editor who got a job without having an issue published because their contest submission was high quality but had an overlap problem or something. Not sure who, though.

That’s probably the closest you’ll get, though. You’ve gotta show you know something about issues before you can be put in charge of dealing with them.

In case anyone is curious, and just because it's an interesting little fact, I had actually edited and published two issues before the issue I wrote to win the position was edited and published.

But I became an Editor because of my writing was publishable, yes.

I did notice it was exactly 1.5 shortlisted issues per shortlisted author...

I had tried that in the past, but, and I don't remember the exact specifics now, there was a discussion with one of the editors that didn't go well. It was either about the use of commas or a singular/plural verb with a collection of entities (for example, "a bunch of citizens is" versus "a bunch of citizens are"). Overall, all the new issues I've seen in the past 2 years or so had absolutely nothing to pick on. If one disregards the inconsistency between British and American English, they're absolutely fine (I think even the "--", " - " and "—" issue has been fixed). I imagine the Editors these days mostly deal with incorrect census effects, which is significantly more difficult than just being good at grammar-nazism.

Outer Sparta wrote:Have there been editors who never written issues? I wonder if that's ever been the case.
I don't know. I'm working as an editor for another text-based game, and I've only ever written 1 text for it, simply because I don't have the imagination.
Maybe the other NS Editors know the answer to this one.

After Australian rePublic's responses to my last drafts submitted to the forum, I don't feel very comfortable sharing them. I would much rather discuss them privately with SherpDaWerp who shares the region with me and has been a long-time friend.

I'm pretty sure grammar-nazism is still important, it just mostly happens behind the scenes and you only see the end result.

(Should "nazism" be capitalized when it's being used metaphorically rather than to refer to the actual Hitler-run political party? For that matter, should it be "naziism" because the "i" is part of the name even before adding the "-ism"? I'd certainly be inclined to pronounce them separately: "nat-see-izz-um".)

EDIT: there are other submissions that weren't shortlisted that still showed promise and may well end up in the game.

If you submitted one that wasn't in the shortlist yet have received no telegram saying it will not be integrated into the game: does that mean it's still being considered?

Or does not being on the shortlist mean you were rejected straightaway?

There are a number of issues that are not shortlisted currently under consideration for potentially being added to the game. As I said in my initial GI announcement, the standard was very high this year.

That said, the team does not send telegrams informing authors if their submission has not been accepted. Whenever you submit an issue, whether for a contest or otherwise, the best thing is always to move onto another draft and let it be a pleasant surprise if you hear anything more.
