Is it time for Europe to unite?

Postby Ansarre » Mon Jul 20, 2020 3:37 am

European federalism is one of the most controversial terms in EU politics. For many it is a good thing, the opportunity for Europe to unite and strengthen itself, allowing for us to once again establish a strong place in the world. On the other hand, many are skeptical or outright oppose it on the grounds that it will create a "European superstate" that will impede on individual cultures and nationalities. Europe is facing many problems today that could easily be countered by federalism/unification. Count Richard von Coudenhove-Kalergi published his manifesto Paneuropa in 1923, and noted that Pan-Europeanism is the only way that Europe can remain truly independent of the USA, Russia and China. Of course, Europe hasn't unified and now we've became more and more reliant on and subservient to those three countries. Our relationship with America before was fine, but the dangerous isolationist rhetoric of President Trump is seeping into the mainstream, and we don't know how reliant we can be on the United States for much longer. In addition, the migration crisis has shown the weakness of Europe's security apparatus, and the ineffective leadership shown by the EU and EU countries has emboldened eurosceptics. Every single issue of note that comes up in the EU doesn't just cause damage, it absolutely paralyzes the institution.

EU constitutional development has left the EU in a mess. It isn't a federation, or even a confederation. It's a weird hybrid between a political & economic union and federal ideas. This system means that member states can just pick and choose what they want do and skirt about their responsibilities. The EU is supposed to be about mutual cooperation for the common good, but that's just an image it projects while the reality is member-states are selfish and unwilling to go the extra mile. This is where federalism comes in.

In the interests of promoting European civilization, Europe must unite into a single political entity. This entity would promote our treasured values of constitutional government, democracy, and property rights, and uphold our common heritages. This Pan-European state, henceforth referred to simply as "Europe", would provide in my opinion the best opportunity for Europe to move forward in the modern day. It would solve our constitutional issues and increase our prestige and influence on the world stage. We are a continent of free peoples surrounded by tyrannical dictators, and with the USA in decline, the world looks to us to provide the global leadership that the United States once did.

With all this mind I ask the question to all of you: do you agree with me?

A few years ago I would have said ''no'', but nowadays I personally wouldn't mind a federal Europe, as together it would be a stronger power. Of course, right now it is still a long road ahead, but perhaps in a further future that could be a possibility.

Europe should definitely unite. It is the only way we can keep our identity and our culture. Even if there are huge differences between the North and the South, the East and the West, I believe there are more things that unite us. If we separate, we will become weaker to the point of being mere pawns of America, China or Russia. Eastern Europe knows that too well. If we united into a federation of some sort, we could expand our own sphere of influence with our own values, which, although Western, differ from those of the USA.

of course. But it's like the president of Serbia said,"The European solidarity does not exist. That was a fairy tale on paper."If the EU really wants to be a whole, it needs each country to be willing to sacrifice for other countries, the EU and the same goal.At the moment, France and Germany are at loggerheads with the "stingy four" who oppose funding to save southern Europe's economy.Oh,but they, France and Germany , were robbing masks all over Europe.

Despite 42% in the opinion polls. But,If every country has one vote, if it's more than 50 percent, they will vote, than 7/27 neer 0.259%.Any resolution adopted by the EU must be supported by 55% of the EU countries and representing more than 65% of the EU's total population. So if you vote in the EU to decide if you want to unite, the answer is "never!"

Will this EU superstate crackdown on illegal migrants or continue to have open borders?

My take on the Europe unification

Postby Midterra » Mon Jul 20, 2020 4:59 am

Ideally, I'd reply "Of course it should".
But pragmatically, basing my viewpoint on the political discussions our national medias usually shows us about EU related topics, along with a still supported history of divisive, nationalistic behaviours, it's far from being a thing.
Because the positive responses on the poll should all be true: yes, it should unite as soon as possible to confront international problems, crisis and have a fair role between the world's strongest powers; it should, though, be united with a strong majority of its members naturally agreeing on it, as well as after reaching some benchmarks, deals and pacts to convince its members on following the path of unification.
We saw how incapable are the actual EU nations to follow the Parliament's common directives, and how furthest is the will of being an example to other fellow members.
But we saw also how weak and ineffective the EU is now in dealing with responsibilities greater than their single members could confront on their own.
If the internal politics of the nations, revolving around this EU project, don't stop the course of actions they are following, and the EU doesn't try to step up in the international matters and take risks and initiatives to strengthen its position and popular appreciation, this idea risks to become an impossible outcome in the near future.

By that logic, the USA should not be united because they sometimes have a government shutdown because congress and the president can't agree on budget/funding.

Disagreement in political bodies is a good thing. We're not China. And yes, this does sometimes mean that certain topics do not move forward.

My opinion is that yes, Europe should unite into one large country. Now what countries are actually in Europe and which aren't, is another story entirely. (for example, would Iceland be included, or Russia? Would we even include Turkey?)

Europe is way too diverse to function in any sort of centralized manner without the interests of smaller, marginal countries being subverted in favour of those with more weight to throw around. Which is probably why pan-Europeanism is so popular among white nationalists who don't understand that "white" is not a nation and crypto-imperialists aiming to secure hegemony for their nation/faction over the rest of the European continent. The more centralized the EU gets, the less its going to function.

I'm not a fan of governments in general, but given that a revolution probably won't happen in the time it takes for me to make this post I'll give my opinion. 8)

Personally I don't think it'll too bad of an idea so long as the majority of people in each country want it, which happens to not be the case here. It could help to increase some sort of internationalisation in my opinion, should the people want the offer.
Anatoliyanskiy wrote:Hm. I find it interesting that 59% of Poland, a country that has seen quite a rise in nationalism, voted that Europe should become one federated state. That, is strange.

My actual opinion is that yes, Europe should unite into one large country. Now what countries are actually in Europe and which aren't, is another story entirely. (for example, would Iceland be included, or Russia? Would we even include Turkey?)

Iceland is a firm Europe in my opinion despite its placement, but yeah we'll leave it up to those transcontinental bois for this one. Cyprus is another tough one: shares a lot of ties with Europe but its physical placement makes it seem to be in Asia.
