The Great Divide (IC/OPEN/PT)

The great civil war has begun. Troops had begun to be recruited and plans were being made. New heroes would rise and old ones would fall. New tactics and weapons will come into use and old ones discarded. Meny people will die of blunders and of pride. And those who work diligently will rise with the ones who work dirty. The great divide has come

Robert Siegel woke early in the morning sighing as he shuffled off the bed, looking towards the door. "What is it?" He waited for a response then groaned as he got up and dressed while shuffling to the door. He undid the latch and grabbed his pistol out of habit as he slowly opened the door to see that there was no one there. He looked around curiously, it was even earlier than he previously thought. He went to the midnight crew that was inspecting the canons, it was almost time for shift change, and for once in the past week, of bad sleep he was earlier then most of the troops, especially the strict lieutenant under him.

John Hakor's men were marching into the wilderness of Tennessee. They had fled Florida when the secessionist movement grew more powerful, both in the general populace and in politics. They numbered 856 men in all. All in their dark green and blue uniforms. They were marching with good uniforms and great morale. Hakor kept his hand to his '58 colt. They were going close to the pro-union side of Tennessee. They were heading to Pulaski to set up their base. They were going with other regiments from the deep south. John hoped it would end quickly and he could return home.

William Jackson, General-in-Chief of the Confederate Armies, understood very well the difficulties he faced. The North had the advantage, and a long, drawn out war would end with the South defeated and the abolition of states' rights. "This cannot be allowed to happen," he stated to the President of the Confederacy as he explained his strategy. "We need to defeat the spirit of the Northerners, to make them lose the will to fight. The way to do is to destroy their industries, their means of livelihood. We need to make the cost of the war so damn high, that they will have no other option but to sue for peace. We cannot wait for the North to attack. We need to go on the offensive."

His orders made this strategy clear. The Confederates would go on the offensive and strike at the heart of the Union. William had already given orders for the formation of the Army of the Potomac in northeastern Virginia, made of six divisions of about 8,000 men each. In total, 48,000 men at arms. It represented the largest force of the Confederates, as the war had just broken out and it would take time to marshal more men and resources.

Orders to the Army of the Potomac

The Army of the Potomac is to begin by next week a march into the state of Maryland. The goal is the capture of the rail hub of Baltimore. Each one of the six divisions shall take a different route, with rendezvous point being the city. The divisions are to avoid combat with Union forces, with orders to change route if necessary to avoid to a battle. Exceptions can be made in case where the enemy units are outnumbered by more than two to one.

The march is to accompanied by the complete destruction of rail services, farmlands and facilities in their way. The primary goal of the march is to inflict as much financial damage on the Union as possible, hence looting and burning are mandatory, albeit in an organized manner rather than being left to the discretion of individual soldiers. Baltimore, upon capture, is to be razed to the ground. Upon completion of the operation, the order is to retreat back to Confederate territory.

Signed,
General in Chief of the Confederate Armies William H. Jackson

Upon sending the letter, William returned to his study, preparing draft plans for the next operations in the war. His plan was to wage an 'unrelenting war', as he liked to call it. To devastate the North's industry, so that they would be forced to make peace. "The key to warfare isn't to destroy the enemy's armies, but rather to destroy the means through which the enemy maintains those armies," he used to say. "If the enemy cannot maintain his armies, then he has lost the war."

It was later in the day and Robert was more awake. He had seen 2 shift changes since being awoken and inspected the fort for the first time in daylight. It was not the biggest of forts, and it had a skeleton crew for now, but it was the place he, and his men would take a stand in. He saw that the canons were placed tactfully as a 4th one was in transit along with more troops to bolster the ranks.

The placement was akin to a triangle, set in a way to cover 3 points, with more men to make up for the lack of coverage in the weaker sections. He could safely place 5 men around the fort, at each point, and use his own 11 for shift relief, so far the plan worked, but with need of more men he was unsure of how much longer it would last. He looked out the town and Called over his Lt.

A tall brown skinned man with long tied back hair and equally long scruffy beard came forward. His breath smelled of whiskey and he looked darn near out of uniform, but he was brutal and efficient soldier while still being kind and fair to his men, in fact one could hear talks of the Lieutenant joining the men in drinking contests; and wining. “Thorik my good man. I think it is time to scout the town were… “occupying” and see if we can’t find some men to help bolster our effort.

A nation divided

Colonel William jäger woke from his tent in Tennessee near the town of Franklin with a population of 1237. His regiment of 1 thousand was also camped near the town and luckily the townsfolk were welcoming to the 20th infantry regiment the townsfolk even gave them some supplies but the soldiers had to leave soon so colonel Jäger ordered the regiment to pick up everything because they were going to march southwards so he ordered his men to ready the wagons and horses, colonel Jäger and his regiment moved southwards unbeknownst to them a Confederate force twice their size was moving to Tennessee.

Laurence McDonnel pondered the report he had recieved. Supposedly a group of volunteers from Florida were coming to join the Union, along with Texas irregulars and some Tenessee units. He decided to grab them while he could.

"Lewis!" He called down the hall. His aide came in

"Post bulletins in the confederate States saying this:"

From the Office of Major General Laurence McDonnell of the Union Army

To any loyal man to the Union, your presence is requested at the Washington Mustering Yards in Washington D.C for service in the Union Army.

Meanwhile, he went to the department of the Navy to see of he could requisition some gunships to patrol the Potomac

the run

Colonel William Jäger had just ordered his soldiers to turn around and march northeast after a young boy no more than 16 ran towards them and handed the colonel a piece paper it read "From the Office of Major General Laurence McDonnell of the Union Army

To any loyal man to the Union, your presence is requested at the Washington Mustering Yards in Washington D.C for service in the Union Army." Jäger's men were confused by the sudden change of movement but kept going only Jäger and the lower ranked officers in the regiment knew of the orders.

As McDonnel was preparing to head to the Department of the Navy to meet with the local admiral, his aide came in

"Sir, the 2nd Florida reports that they are going not going to be arriving soon, and a group of Texan Irregulars known as the vaqoius say that they are held up in a fort on the Texas-Arkansas border."

McDonnel slid his sword into his sheath, tightening the scabbard and flipping it reversed.

"Very well, send return telegraphs saying that the request is an ASAP, so that they know where I want them to be but that they don't feel a need to rush out stupidly. And say, is there a railway near them? If so, get a train out there to pick them up."

Eastern Virginia,

The 1st and 3rd Corps of the Army of the Potomac was position on both sides of the river from which it had received it's name. Each bridgehead had about 3 divisions, 2 deployed and 1 in reserve. Cannon were readied at all times to help defend against a confederate attack. The 4th Corps was held in reserve about 4 miles back to help supplement casualties. The total battle strength of the Army of the Potomac was 70 thousand men

John Hakor and his men started to march more north as the Tennessee became more hostile to the union. They were aiming to go to southern Kentucky to help hold off any actions. Second Florida was coming in with 3 batteries and 2 Calvary companies to help stave off the invasion. The colonel got the message from the Major General. He was surprised by it. The Major General wanted to abandon the West to the Rebels. That would mean the steel and coal and the food industry would lay wide open to invasions. He decided to write back saying they would have to help hold off attempte in Kentucky.

Robert and Thorik were walking around the town as they preached about defending this city and freeing slaves left and right, they finally made it to the local tavern, and held a recruitment drive, where they managed to pick up 10 more able bodied people bringing the total capacity of the Fort to 36. They were happy of the recruitment done but needed more people so started to head towards the church and sway the "god fearing" people. Things were going well till they saw gray round the corner. "Shit." Robert thought as he tapped Thorik on the shoulder and doubled back towards the fort. They let the mayor of the town know what was going on and hit up the post office to get the mens letters and orders. While they ran back to the fort he read the orders form this unknown general and rolled his eyes.
"I'm sending a response to this bucket head, about needing aid ourselves. If need be perhaps we can meet in kentucky but we are going to try to hold the fort long enough to bring the canons with us." Robert thought for a bit as they finally made it to the fort. He ordered the clsoing of the fort and posted the new men around the walls along with others int he dried moat and focused the canons to be ready for invaders, wicked, powdered and loaded for the first wave. "Be ready men!"

McDonnel twitched his lip at the response from the Texas Irregulars. Apparently he was unable to move, and was wondering about meeting In Kentucky. He had secured the gunships from the Navy, no way in hell the Confederates were getting through that way without some serious firepower. He was in Eastern Virginia now, it was just a matter of time before the action. Massive recruiting drives were going on in Washington, units being apportioned to various armies all over the Union.

To Robert
Of course, there are several units of ours in Kentucky, and you will be able to meet up with them to head to Washington

The rest of the Floridian Loyalists had caught up to them. In total they numbered 2 Infantry regiments, 4 batteries and 2 Calvary Companies. The were shown as the Floridian Brigade. They had arrived in Cornersville as the tensions in south Tennessee exploded. They were aiming to go to Kentucky, wait to see if the rebels tried to make a run for it. Then they would start moving down into reb territory.

Major General Jeriamiah Easing had been tasked with the command of the Army of Tennessee. His current assignment was to secure Tennessee and move into Kentucky. Supposedly some Floridians had betrayed their state and were running to Major General Laurence McDonnell of the Army of the Potomac. He had been ordered to stop them from getting there.

His 1st Corps was closest, and closing with the Floridians. General Hewletts brigade would reach them in the morning

Marion, Illinois
Cyprian Waldemar Zagorski

The morning sun illuminated the paper as Cyprian's eyes moved across the lines of text. "Washington? They want us to go to Washington?"
Brigadier General Mirosław Rutka responded "Yes it would appear so. Something about needing us to muster there, I presume they want to meet the rebels head on in Virginia."
Cyprian took a brief second to think... "No, I can't agree to that, we'd be leaving the Mississippi open to attack, I have to assume the worst case scenario and in my eyes that means the rebels diverting attention to the east in order to take the Mississippi and cut the Union in half. I may be wrong, but I want us to move to the Mississippi-Ohio confluence, we can set up a fort and protect both rivers from confederate attack, securing the agriculturally important midwest."
"I wholeheartedly agree sir, but what are we supposed to do? We can't exactly just disobey an order from the commander of the military."
"Wouldn't be a first." Cyprian and Rutka both chuckled, they had served together in Russia and were both involved in the Polish soldiers strike. "Nevertheless, you bring a valid point, we'll have to plead with the commander. Lest we leave the entire nation undefended in hopes of capturing a handful of cotton farms. I'll have a telegram written, in the mean time notify the other Brigade Commanders, we are continuing our journey to the confluence."
"Very well, Mój Pan"

Military Telegraph
Cypher No. 17

"Major General McDonnell, while I see the merit and reasoning, that the coast must be protected, I cannot leave the west unguarded. It was my intention to continue south toward the Mississippi-Ohio River Confluence in order to keep both the important Ohio Industrial region, and the Midwest Agricultural Region protected from rebel advance. I ask for your pardon to disobey these orders so that I may do so and begin any necessary preparations for a possible Trans-Mississippi campaign, should your actions on the coast prove unfruitful. I'll send you a telegram once we have established a position at the confluence, however, until then I await your reply. Best regards my American Brethren."
