Does fish which is caught in fresh water count as seafood?

Postby Australian rePublic » Fri Jul 17, 2020 3:46 am

You're in Albury on the banks of the Murray River. You go to the lcoal pub and you sample the local produce. On the menu you see cod, locally caught. You're more than 400 kilometres from the ocean, and you see local fish on the menu. It's fresh water. It comes from the river which runs through the city. You decide to order it.

You're in Ontario, Canada on a snowy day, hundreds of kilometres from the sea. You're warming up in and dining in a restaurant overlooking Lake Michigan, one of the largest fresh water bodies anywhere on Earth. You order some local bass, which comes from the lake that you're staring at.

You're in an inland Greek town overlooking a fresh water river. You go fishing. You just caught tonight's dinner- that is- a giant rainbow trout

In any of those three scanarios, are you eating seafood?

In my opinion, no. How can be seafood if it comes from many kilometres away from the sea? Hundreds of kilomtres in the case of Canada and Albury. And in the case of the Greek fish, the trout would die if you tried to put it in the sea. How call a wild fish seafood if it can't survive in the sea? Isn't the very definition of "seafood" food from the sea? How can Murray cod be classified as seafood if it comes from hundreds of kilometres from the sea? How can Lake Michigan bass be considered seafood considering that you're nowhere near the sea? It's not seafood, and calling it seafood is a travesty!

What's your opinion, NSG?

EDIT:
Does any of this really matter? No, not at all,not in the slightest. But just like the "is the hot dog a sandwhich" debate, just because it doesn't change the fact that it's fun to take a break from all the horrible shit happening in the world world all the time and poke holes in English, the world's lingua franca

Honestly it doesn't matter a damn. If you want to coin a new term "river-food" to distinguish those things from a river from those things from the sea, go right ahead. Be aware of farmed fish though, you'll have to distinguish that from river-food, good luck coming up with a word for sea-food farmed on land.

Pedantry is the sport of small minds.

Considering that we had a thread discussing whether or not a hot dog is a sandwhich, how is this any different? Why shouldn't we wind back and have a discussion which pokes holes in English, the world's Lingua Franca? Does whether or not trout counts as seafood really matter in the grand scheme of the things? No, of coarse, not in the slightest. But it's still fun to have a discussion about it

It's not seafood. Not that it matters much.

Perhaps a more pertinent question would be: are the vegetarians that eat fish and other seafood being silly or just trolling when they adamantly and forcefully say they are still vegetarian?

I can see an argument for regarding salmon, sea trout, and eels as sea food. Everything else no, always called them freshwater fish.
Everything is intertwinkled

If it matters that much to you, then here’s the answer. I Googled it, don’t know why you just didn’t do that:

Seafood refers to all fresh and salt water fish, crustaceans and shellfish. Examples of common seafood include: Fish: Anchovy, bass, bluefish, carp, cat fish, char, cod, flounder, haddock, halibut, herring, orange roughy, mahi-mahi, sardines, salmon, trout and tuna.

Does that answer you question?

Well I had a look for some solid definitions for what 'seafood' and 'sea' are. From what I have gathered, it wouldn't count if it's not from salt water.

I don't like a militant vego either, but in my experience vegos are far more offended-against than offensive.

A vego will politely ask if there's meat in something, and some carnivore will have at them about why? Are they a real vegetarian? What about the rats and voles in a wheat field? Do they want to extinguish the species of Cow?

No. If it doesn't come from the sea then it's just sparkling fish.

In short, "fascist" is a modern word for "heretic," branding an individual worthy of excommunication from the body politic. The right uses otherwords ("reverse-racist," "feminazi," "unamerican," "communist") for similiar purposes, but these words have less elastic meanings. Fascism, however, is the gift that keeps on giving. - Jonah Goldberg, revisited.
