Paris

Five years. It had been nearly half a decade since the end of WW2, and it was nearly a decade since France was brutaly humiliated by the German Blitzkrieg. But that was not going to drag the French nation down. If anything, it was going to make them more determined than ever to rise up from the ashes.

But how to do so was the great question. The parties on the left of France suggested sticking to the post-war dirigisme that had worked well enough for the past five years. The center and right however pushed for a more Germanic economic practice with greater involvement of the free market as well as corporate welfare. And eventually it came to the French president to decide which economic theory would work best to aid in the recovery of France.

But neither system would be chosen. Instead, a sort of middle ground was propossed. The middle ground was that the industrial sector would be forced to rationalize. Meanwhile in the Saarland, the coal and steel industries would be merged into Saar Coal and Saar Steel respectively. Both would be publicly trade companies. In a nod to dirigisme, many of the formerly nationalized companies would remain government owned but would also sell 45% of their shares on the stock market. But the pièce de résistance was to be the unprescedented move of opening up the French market to foreign competition. Namely, American competition. This was being done for two reasons. One, was to improve the competitiveness of French companies, and the other was to allow cheaper consumer goods to be sold in France, with the goal of having the goods be produced under license in France.

And so, it seemingly was decided. That France would certainly follow a more liberal path, but with safeguards in the form of government regulations and government owned companies as to prevent a return to the fragmented and chaotic capitalisim of the French Third Republic. But with thid decission, a clear message was being made. The Saarland is French. Sure the French government knew it would anger the Germans if France kept the Saar. But Bismark, then Wilhem II and then Hitler had all trampled on France and caused imense suffering on the French people. So keeping a little peace of coal and industry rich land was in the eyes of the French people 'a small price to pay.'

French Governmental Communique

For the last five years France has rebuilt herself from the destruction wrought upon her my a second world war in less than fifty years. And it should be duly noted that as in 1947, the industrial levels of 1939 had been acheived. However, plenty of work remains to be done in rebuilding France. The state of French infrastructure leaves often much to be desired, and the French economy still can perform better. As such, it is the announcement of the French government that France is open for buisness.

Any company as long as it gains aproval from the French governent may begin to sell their products in France. Tariffs on said goods will only be 10% of the products value if it is a consumer good and 5% if it is a food product. Automobiles will have a 15% tarrif on them reduced from 35%. To circumvent these tarrifs, the establishment of production facilites in France is encouraged. The French workforce is highly skilled and motivated, and if production is established in France, for the first five years, no income taxes will be levied.

The ultimate message from the French government is that above all, France is open for buisness and is ready to allow companies in to compete and expand in the European market.

After Hitler had seized power, Europe had been torn apart by one of the most violent wars in history, 60 million people having been consumed by the dogs of war. France had been decimated, England had been gutted, Germany ripped apart. America and the USSR had risen from the ashes more glorious and triumphant than ever, rising as the new superpowers. It was now the task of the rest of the world to choose sides. Germany, crippled by war, famine, and genocide was left to pick up the pieces of half of its former size, one half being under the boot of Stalin. The Erhard plan had established new currency and was helping to bring Germany back up, people were working, Germany was rivaling England and France in the vehicle making industry, and German goods were being exported to the world. Germany was back. But it was the job of Germany to pick up Europe to unify it against the threat of the Eastern Block. Germany had to repair it's relations with France and England.

The UK was in debt. Sure, they had won WW2 but the cost had been tremendous. The only way to get more money was from the US or the USSR. Ever since its independence, Brazil's history has been marked with revolution and coups. Getúlio Vargas helped in creating a modern Brazil, trying to turn it from slave and plantation economy to a industrialized economy, he reduced our foreign dependency, protected local industries and businesses, and helped develop our industries. He also helped every day citizens by introducing increased welfare, labor rights, and a higher minimum wage. With all of these positives, there was also negatives. To develop our industries, he created state monopolies in several sectors. He influenced the the 1934 Presidential Election, and used fears of communist uprising to create an authoritarian state, modeled on fascist regimes in Europe and gradually went right during the Estado Novo era. After the war, there was strong pressure for democratization following a general trend of democratization after the 2nd World War, Vergas tried to set elections, but couldn't keep support for his presidential, and was couped by the government on the 29th of October. After José Linhares (Brazil's President of the Supreme Federal Court) set up elections, Eurico Gaspar Dutra got elected in 1946, and will continue to serve as president until 1951 when there will be the 1951 Presidential Elections. He is a pro US president, as he has outlawed the Brazilian Communist Party and closed relations with the Soviets, while improving relations with the US which has led to increasing western and American investment in Brazil, and foreign industries entering Brazil. He has also created the Salte Plan which has further developed Health, Food, Transportation and Energy. This has led to several roads and railroads in the country, connecting key parts of the nation through road and railroad, it has also further investment in oil and natural gas in the country as well as investing in other forms of energy like hydroelectricity and experimental nuclear energy, it has further supported farmers and led to greater outputs by them, and improved health in the countries by investing in hospitals, and reducing tuberculosis and malaria in the country. Vargas has seemed to be gradually reentering politics, but it even with everything he has done, it seems like Dutra is more popular after what he has done to the nation. Dutra has led to a period of prosperity never seen before in this nation and along with this stable democracy, who knows what could happen in the future.

(OOC: Sorry this came out as more of a history lesson, but it is important as Dutra is obviously important to our nation because he is our head of state and Vargas will continue to be important to Brazil throughout this decade.)

Pretoria, South Africa
New Years 1950

It was a whole new year and a whole new decade in the Cape, with fireworks illuminating the night skies as Prime Minister Malan watched from his balcony while drinking cognac and chomping on a cigar. It had been over a year and a half now since he won the 48' General Election, and brought victory to the National Party who now hold wide control over much of the Union of South Africa, or so they wanted to believe. Jan Smuts' United Party and James Moroka's ANC were already making problems for Malan's administration, with both opposing parties having heavily criticized the implementation of Apartheid following the Election. It was becoming a constant cycle of ANC led demonstrations one day, and United Party led internal protests the next. Even Malan could sense a growing problem was beginning to rise, one that could have dire consequences for his Union late down the line.

After stepping back inside to his office with the rest of constituents, he was immediately greeted by his Minister of Defense, F.C. Erasmus. "Prime Minister, it is key that we formulate a reevaluation of the defense budget during this first quarter."

"Christ Frans, the decade just started and already you're talking about the military's budget, can't you let me enjoy my drink first before making plans to sequester more diamonds to fund new tanks or aircraft." Malan responded annoyed, after begrudgingly sitting down at his desk to listen to Erasmus' reasoning for this time.

"Well it's my job, Prime Minister. Especially when we're about to have some internal issues spring up on us." He then pulled up a chair next to Malan's desk, and laid down a folder with proposed contracts to various NATO nations for military equipment orders on them. "I suggest we ask for some aid from our benefactors in London first." He then added.

Groaning a bit, Malan read and flipped through the papers the Minister had just given him, partially not paying as much attention given how inebriated he was at point in the night, but overall still getting the general idea. "So you want permission to order tanks, plane, and ships, is that it?."

Erasmus then nodded to Malan in response.

"Also the prospects of developing a nuclear reactor given our vast amounts of uranium." Minister of Finance, Nicolaas Havenga, then added in. "Alright, alright you two get on with your telegrams then, and let me enjoy my night." Malan then dismissed both of them and puffed his cigar back to life with its embers glowing.

It has come to our attention that in order to ensure security in the Cape Region, and by extension the Southern Hemisphere. The Union Defense Force is in need of a gradual transition into more updated hardware that'll replace equipment made for the last war in mind. With that in mind, we request:

-A order of 250 units of Centurion Main Battle Tanks (paid and shipped over a course of 5 years, with 50 units per year).
-A order of 50 units of De Havilland Vampire Jet Fighters (paid and shipped over a course of 2 years, with 25 units per year).
-A bulk order of 50 CAS planes and 20 Tactical Bombers.
-5 Destroyers and 3 Frigates class warships.
-Requested models for evaluation on the EM-2 Rifle.

Further payment plans can be discussed, and will come in the form of diamond bonds.

-Minister of Defense, F.C. Erasmus.

It comes with eagerness that we wish to collaborate with your atomic energy division to conceive possible plans of facilitating a nuclear reactor in South Africa, given our country's vast amounts of uranium deposits. We can further strike an energy deal of more uranium shipments to the US with the request of investors and atomic engineers in return on America's end. We can turn this into a very lucrative deal for both parties.

We are pleased with Parliament's approval to the equipment deal. We likewise agree to joint operations in the Cape Region, and will recommend that base be facilitated in Port Elizabeth, being the most central coastal port on South Africa's southern coastline. We also request an extension of operations in the South Atlantic, including the Falklands and South Georgia Islands, that'll act as training bases for UDF Marines.

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics
Moscow, 1950

It was a cold, January day in Moscow. Fear and pride manifested themselves into every Soviet heart. They had triumphed in the Second Great War, but at what cost? Millions of comrades were dead, widowing all but the lucky. The Soviet Union had quickly become the global powerhouse, except for the United States. The Americans were hated with the hatred of an iron bear, ripping apart the blue eagle like it had attacked its kids. The Soviet kids. And in a way, they did. Unrest rippled throughout the Comintern, and the puppets strongly desired to live the American Dream. And what a dream it was. Unfortunately, that dream didn’t include the USSR.

Most Americans simply referred to the Soviet Union as The Red Menace. A menace it was, and it was certainly red, but why couldn’t it be treated with respect? It was a glorious uprising as the people overthrew the imperial overlords, like the American Revolution itself. Granted, the Stalinist regime isn’t exactly as integral as it claims to be, but Stalin is old news. The future of the Soviet Union and it’s leader lies with the future of the Soviet people. Only the great can lead the Soviets to greatness.

Stalin knew his time was almost up. He lived quite a regretful life, but his name was forever sealed in history. He was important, and he cherished that. Not to mention industrializing Russia in only two decades. Stalin wasn’t exactly a pacifist, but he knew for the USSR to survive, it needed to establish peace with the states that comprise it. To be known as The Red Machine, perhaps. Of course, if the Americans rejected de-escalation, aggression would be necessary. However, the USSR needed to slash corruption. Stalin sighed. “But I’m the source of corruption,” he moaned. “The end of corruption is the end of me. But, the near end of me, is hopefully the near end of corruption.” And with that, Stalin headed home, to fall asleep quickly. It had been a long, tiring, cold, and January day.

Rio de Janeiro: January 1950

At the moment, President of Brazil, Eurico Gaspar Dutra is writing a telegram to the US after a meeting with his advisors. After several meetings with his advisors including this one, it was finally agreed upon that with the USSR's power increasing, Brazil had to do something to protect the interests of itself and protect Latin America to keep stability in Latin America high, or just as high as possible. If Latin America falls to communists, Brazil is soon to be next, it had a significant Communist Party a few years ago, it could reappear if the USSR decided that a communist Brazil was in their interests. Dutra's Brazil had been growing close to the US ever since he became president, and if any nation hates communism, it is the US. This led him and his advisors to this decision to protect Brazil and keep Latin America from falling into the USSR's hands.

Ever since the Inter-American Conference of Peacekeeping and Security of the Continent of 1947, the threat of communism has rose. The USSR is looking to spread communism across the globe as seen after the Chinese Communist won their civil war, and if we aren't careful, it could reach and the Americas. We must not let the Americas fall to the same fate as Eastern Europe and China. This is why we propose a Brazilian-American Meeting on Peacekeeping and Security of the Continent, as the US is the dominant power in North America and Brazil is the dominant power in South America. This conference would only include our 2 nations, and a meeting location would be agreed upon soon. This conference would mostly focus on the security of the continent against communism, but would also include protecting both our countries against communist revolution in the future. This conference would be known by the public, but the contents of the conference would be kept secret. The conference could happen in the next few months but the exact date can be agreed upon later. A 2nd Inter-American Conference of Peacekeeping and Security of the Continent could also happen again later this year, which would invite every nation in the Americas that wanted to participate, which could include the communist threat but would also include the further development of Latin American nations but this can be decided upon later. We hope you can agree to this, as it would provide further security to the Americas and our 2 nations.

Belgrade

Draža Mihailović stood in the middle of the podium, flanked by his loyal commanders, while he addressed the population which laid before him, celebrating that date. His speech was being broadcasted all over the nation in Serbo-Croatian, Slovene and Macedonian.

"Five years ago the last nazi holdings on our land fell to the Balkans United Army. We have united the people of the Balkans and neither the capitalist degenerates of the West nor the communist tyrants of the East will prevent our glorious rise to glory."

While he addressed the people, the Balkans United Army was conducting mop up operations against the remnants of titoist hardliners and Fascist Chetniks that had rejected the "National United Front" proposed by the current leader, Draža Mihailović, to defeat the Germans after Tito's execution. The United Front had welcomed moderates from both the Chetniks, the Partisans and the Royalist militas. The Germans were now gone, and the Balkans Federation controlled all land from Ljubljana to Tirana.

The Balkans Federation had adopted radical centrism as it's ideology, making compromises and adopting ideals from both left (secularism, federalism, mixed economy) and right (fiscal conservatism, militarism) under the autocratic guidance of President Draža Mihailović. Even in the international stage, the Balkans had adopted a neutral stance, hostile to both sides of the Iron curtain.

Dutra has announced another reduction of tariffs and quotas on the US, which were mostly put in place by Getúlio Vargas as part of his protectionist policy. He has also announced more possible tax breaks for US business, to the point where Brazil is almost giving US business money to be here. Getúlio Vargas, which has gotten back into politics and announced his running for Brazilian President in December 1949, has said the move by the Dutra administration is a mistake, and reversing his protectionist actions and continuing to offer tax breaks and other offers to foreign businesses is going to affect domestic industry and cause the breakdown of the domestic economy. Citizens who once supported welcoming US business and investment, are now starting to wonder if it is too much after Vargas's comment on this. Dutra has not responded to this criticism.

Citizens who once supported welcoming US business and investment, are now starting to wonder if it is too much after Vargas's comment on this. Dutra has not responded to this criticism.

OOC: Yes?

OOC: meaning your stuff about 1949 presidency is void.
Behind the free market lies the iron fist of the state - the one thing I learned from The Blaatschapen, excluding how to say sheep in dutch.
Update: apparently it’s bleating sheep.

Paris

The cabinet of President Auriol had convened to discuss the future of France as well as the future of Europe. Everyone seemed to share different ideas of the future. All agreed that France should be the leader of Europe, but the dissagreement was over Germany. Some wanted a strong Germany as an ally against communisim, while others wanted Germany to remain weak as payback for steamrolling France thrice in the past eighty years. While others wanted a middle ground of a militarily weak, but economically strong Germany.

"Alright, as you all know, Germany is claiming to have returned." Auriol told his cabinet.

"Mr. President, do not underestimate the Germans. They never cease to amaze." Robert Schuman---the Foreign Minister---said.

"Of course not Mr. Schuman. Lest we forget what happened three times in the last eighty years!" Paul Ramadier---the Minister of National Defence---stated sarcastically.

"Clearly a strong Germany would be a threat to French hegemony, even if we are allies now. How to we maintain the strenght of the French nation while keeping up with the Germans?" Asked Jules Moch, the Minister of the Interior.

"The obvious answer is to make Germany dependent on us." Prime Minister Henri Queuille suggested.

"Mr. Queuille! Dependent on us?! Have you seen the state of our nation?! We're barely reaching our pre-WW2 levels, and now you think we can make Germany dependent on us?! You're mad!" Eugène Claudius-Petit---the Minister of Reconstruction and Town Planning---said with great vigour as he shot down Queuille's argument.

"Frankly, I think the best option is to make Germany be our ally. Whether they like it or not, we're on the same team now, and we still can exert immense influence over them." President Auriol said.

By the end of the meeting, no concensus had been reached. But a plan had started to take form.

It is the view of the French government that deeper ties with the USA are necessary. As such, the French government has requested the purchase of 850 M47 Patton tanks as well as 350 M46 Patton tanks, and 1,500 M24 Chaffee tanks. To aquire these vhicles however, France would need a mutual aid grant of $3.5 billion. The aid will be aminly spent on defence as well as upgrading French infrastructure in the interests of national security. In return from this grant, tarrifs will be lowered on American goods.

Pretoria, South Africa

It was the 96th anniversary celebration of the End of the Great Trek throughout the Union, and while celebrations were more modest compared to the centenary celebration of the Great Trek years prior in 1938, it wasn't without both its protests and heightened Boer nationalism. Having been more politically charged since 1948 in the aftermath of the election that year, and with the implementation of Apartheid by Malan's administration. To the ANC and Anglo centric United Party, the Great Trek in recent years had become a symbol of infamy representing Boer supremacy and the wrongs committed by the National Party.

While Malan was at attendance in the capital to deliver a speech commemorating the occasion, protests and public demonstrations grew to unprecedented size outside of the event and throughout other cities in the Union, with a record tens of thousands of native Blacks, Indians, Coloureds, and even supporting Anglos actively speaking out against the National Party and to the oppressive racial segregation brought about through Apartheid.

As Malan continued his speech trying to ignore the distant protests, the opposing crowd only grew more agitated until it reached the boiling point that riot police had to get involved to make sure they didn't disrupt the event in the capital any further. The Prime Minister was soon no longer finding himself distracted as the crowd against him occupying themselves outside of his event grew smaller and more distant as the police pushed the protests to further away backstreets that were out of his view, and have preceded to do their dirty work of beating them with batons and blinding them with tear gas. The Police Department of Pretoria later justifying the callous brutality as "Keeping the peace on a momentous occasion." A young Black man was then later reported to have been killed in the police's counteroffensive after being kneeled on his neck to death to the point of asphyxiation as a riot officer was 'making' his arrest on him.

This caused immediate public outcry and backlash from the ANC and Black sympathetic United Party members. Malan later that day would then try and downplay the murder as a, "Tragic accident made in the heat of the moment," which only seemed to enrage his opposition more upon hearing.

"What a shit day." Malan only thought to himself as he sat in his office drinking a glass of cognac, as he received more grueling reports coming in from throughout the country of more protests and cases of rioting met with heavy police response.

Pyongyang

The Vanguard Republic (Daikorea)

The Vanguard people, a hardworking and industrious sort, worked hard to upbuild their country after Japan's occupation, and WWII. The Japanese were a cruel, stubborn, and annoying people - ofcourse, they were punished, but the Vanguards still were very vengeful.

Japan, oddly enough, was now aligned under the US, and being invested in - which deeply annoyed President Sung and Vice-President Chi-Song. The Soviets, to the northwest, also got under the Vanguards' skin.

The US, or American Empire, had a bad taste in the Vanguards' mouth, but atleast they were better than the Japanese fat controllers and abusers who stole from Daikorea and used all their assets to better and boost-up Kyoto, Tokyo and the other main Japanese towns and cities.
