All the money in the world, a quality piece of film making, Ridley Scott films always look so good, though maybe the character motivations could have done with more examination.

Psycho-Pass: The Movie

Not as deep or as enjoyable as the show, sadly.

I just watched the movie adaptation of Les Misérables and I have to say - it does not deserve the hate it gets. It was absolutely fantastic. I adored Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway, and Russel Crowe is one of the best Javerts when it comes to acting even if his singing isn't the best (the ending of Stars wasn't that great).

Spoilers ahead, because I just have to talk about this movie.

The scene where Valjean dies is absolutely brilliant - I cried for like 10 minutes straight solely because of Hathaway and Jackman's acting. I don't remember it being like that in the play (though I may be misremembering), and the way they used a stunt double to cover for Jackman as he walked away from Valjean's corpse was absolutely great. I love the attention to detail; Javert helping a guy at the barricade, the letter to Cosette from Valjean that says "Cosette" in cursive, hell, I even liked the actors for the Thenadiers (who I absolutely despise as characters), and I love the fact that they're not made into slave traders in the movie. It makes that ending where they get punched by Marius and thrown out so much more satisfying.

Russel Crowe as Javert was a very solid choice. His singing isn't the best in some parts, but in others it's absolutely the best in my book, especially when Valjean frees him, and he sings

"Shoot me now, for all I care!
If you let me go, beware!
You will still answer to Javert!"

That sent chills down my spine.

His singing of Javert's Suicide was also pretty good, though I don't like how they skipped a pretty good portion of the song (going immediately from the fast beginning to "And my thoughts fly apart..." He brought a human side to Javert which I absolutely love - Javert's meant to be portrayed as a clinically depressed person putting on a mask, and I think that Russell Crowe played it perfectly.

The only actor I didn't really like was Eddie Redmayne as Marius. His singing's good enough, but his acting didn't really convince me as Marius and the only parts I really fell like he fit into the role was at the wedding and Valjean's confession.

The sewer scene wasn't terribly good. I'm not a fan of how Valjean and Marius got covered in muck, and throughout that whole scene I was thinking "how is Marius's wound not being infected by this?!" To add onto that, the beginning of Javert's Suicide was sung very badly by Jackman. Jackman's singing began to fall apart after the second act, though it recovered for a great climax with his last song.

Overall, it was a great movie (and my favorite of all time), but I feel like some parts could be improved and some lines weren't sung or acted properly. It earns a good 8/10 from me.

I watched the 1984 Dune movie after reading the novel.

It sucks if your a big fan of the book, and it will be so confusing for anyone who hasn't read the book but feels interested in watching it. This is a warning. Do not let this persuade you not to watch it. I feel it's better if you do watch it so you can see for yourself. I am much more hopeful for the 2020 Dune movie coming out in December.

Das Boot. The 1997 director's cut, I think. Excellent movie. I think it's a new favorite of mine, in all honesty.

Underwater! a colour RKO Radio picture, a bit disappointing. I was hoping it was a film that ends with a massive bell being rung by an earthquake as it collapses, a film whose title I have forgotten, I think Victor Mature may be in it. Suggestions welcome.

The Taking of Pelham 123 a really good heist film from 1974, just shy of being a great film.

Hm..maybe 1917?

Good movie, although it kind of had a plot that was a little too simple, and drawn out over 2 hours.

Same. It was decent, although I’m not sure what all the fuss was a few years ago. Like, if you got a ticket, you’d be set for life or something. It was decent, but not THAT insanely good.
