Her Majesty, Empress La'akea, speaking with journalists in Jiasing
Bi-annual Wargames to be held in Songha

Thursday July 9 2020, 8:40 AM | Liu-Hu, Songha

Her Majesty, La'akea Yunga-Seung, arrived in Liu-Hu earlier this morning, alongside other high ranking members of the Imperial Council, and members of the royal family, presumably to oversee the start of the bi-annual Songhese Wargames, coined the "Songhese Practices of Sovereignty and Dignity" by some in the Government. The wargames are to take place on land, sea, and air. Naval forces will conduct live-fire practices in the Bay of Padmer, while Land Forces will conduct practices in multiple places spanning up and down the Western Seaboard of Songha; the largest of these will take place to the Southwest of Liu-Hu. Air Forces will coordinate in the practices of both divisions, while also having smaller performances of their own.

These wargames will coincide with the 77th Anniversary of the end of the Great War of Qes, or the Second Great War as it is called in Auressia. Taking advantage of the mobilised force numbers, many of these forces will march in parades and celebrations along the coast alongside local forces, in a show of force and respect to the world. Similar, but smaller, celebrations will take place across the nation - the largest celebrations will, of course, take place in Liu-Hu and Jiasing.

Some question the function of these wargames in the 21st Century, posing the perspective that surely the modern world has moved past the need for combat-ready armed forces at a given notice; however, nonetheless, the government pushes forward with these exercises, insisting that with the history of aggression Songha has faced, that the nation must be ready to defend itself ruthlessly in all situations. Nonetheless, whether you support or oppose the wargames, all must admit it's a great show of patriotism and unity for the whole country in coordination with Unity Day.

Sunrise house, in which Morris lived and the letters discovered
Hidden stash of letters finally answer long-held questions on Robert Morris?
News of the Republic

Thursday July 9 2020, 11:02 AM | Elland's Island, Audonia

In many academic circles, the most famous Founding Father, Robert Morris, is one of the most controversial figures to exist in Audonian history, but not for his legacy or actions, but rather for his sexuality. Starting mere months after Morris's death, rumours would abound about a relationship with the Tyrnican general, Adelar Sigmund, who was rarely spotted from Morris's side during the Wars of Revolution. While many historians claim that the two men were lovers, many also dismiss the possibility, claiming that Morris acted no different than many men from that era or that the presence of Adelar was a necessity due to his military expertise having fought in wars previously. Most strikingly is the fact Sigmund was exiled from Tyrnica for actions related to attempting to seduce fellow noblemen's wives.

However, in recent days during routine restoration at Sunrise House, the longtime home of both Robert Morris and the Morris family, a compartment was discovered that held a number of intensely personal letters from Morris and Sigmund, as well as other Founding Fathers. The letters themselves are dated between 1820 all the way to 1830. The revelation has certainly rocked the historian community as historians race to read the letters to fully get a better grip on both who Morris was as a person and the nature of his relationships with his fellow officers were. In the letters, it has been reported that the language used by Morris is highly personal, quite irregular as Morris was known to short and concise when talking in public. Additionally, Morris refers to Sigmund as his 'Brother of my heart', which historians are citing as indisputable proof of either Morris's homosexuality or bisexuality. In addition to this, many are questioning that, if the letters were not scandalous or proof of a relationship, why were they hidden in the first place and who, for whatever reason, hid them to begin with.

Despite this, other historians have dismissed the claims as being sensationalist, stating that while Morris was short and concise in public, he was regarded to have been a remarkably emotional man in his private life, most notably in his resignation from the presidency following the death of his wife. Additionally, historians claim that Morris refers to all the Founding Fathers as 'Brothers of my heart' due to their unique experiences together in fighting several wars of independence and the difficulty such a thing would pose would likely cause the men to be closely bonded as a result.

Regardless of which side of the debate a person falls on, the letters found earlier this week are no doubt ones of great importance as they allow the historians to try an understand what type of person Robert Morris was during this period of his life following the end of his presidency, and the increasing isolation he would have felt as more and more of those he fought his wars with began to die of old age.

Her Majesty, Empress La'akea, at a public celebration in the morning
Songha celebrates Her Majesty's birthday

Thursday July 14 2020, 11:57 AM | Jiao'zi, Songha

Across Songha today, celebrations are expected in commemoration of the reigning Sovereign's birthday. Indeed, this morning, Her Majesty was seen attending public events in her hometown of Jiao'zi; other royal family members, including her heir, His Highness Shan'tan Tan'ali-Seung, attended various celebrations around the country.

This celebration marks the 68th year of the Empress' life. This represents an oddity in the history of the Imperial Family; it is customary for reigning sovereigns to abdicate in favour of their heir on or shortly after their 60th birthday. However, her heir is quite young, even by Imperial standards, where incoming sovereigns tend to be on the younger side, being 30 years of age. Some have speculated she may wait until her 70th to abdicate, at which time, Songha will get its first Male Sovereign in over 80 years. Spokespersons of the Imperial Family have simply stated that Her Majesty wishes to wait until she feels it an opportune time to pass the torch, before stepping down.

Happy birthday wishes to Her Majesty!

Dumont Hotels lays off 50 cleaning staff in Pointe-à-L’anse location
The Dumont Pointe-à-L’anse says financial situation means a slimming of staff
Éloi Lavasseur | 11 August 2020

The Amandine-based hotel chain’s Pointe-à-L’anse location has cited a tourism downturn
for recent layoffs, while former staff accuse the hotel of anti-union behaviour.

Pointe-à-L’anse — The Pointe-à-L’anse location of the multinational Dumont chain of hotels has officially announced that they will be laying off fifty members of its cleaning staff after September 1st. The announcement comes after weeks of speculation after the hotel barred a representative of the Saint-Baptiste Labour Federation from talking with staff about unionizing. The hotel’s manager, Gaëtan Kléber, stated that the layoff was not due to fears of unionizing, but a downside in the hotel’s second quarter. “The FTSB representative showed up without notifying us, and demanded immediate access to our facilities without booking, so we were in the right to deny his request. This is not an issue of association”, stated Kléber.

According to recently released reports, the Dumont Pointe-à-L’anse has been seeing a financial downturn since September 2018, and it is this issue that management has “decided to limit our operations and release some of our employees”, according to the official memo. Despite this, many of the laid off staff have stated with our reporters that both the hotel’s poor profit margin and attempts to unionize with the FTSB have been issues with management for years. As such, a small group of the cleaning staff have stated they will attempt to sue Dumont for damages and breaking the constitutional right of free association.

Despite the Dumont Pointe-à-L’anse's recent performance, Dumont International has stated to numerous media outlets in Amandine, where the company is based, that the Baptistois hotel still remains a flagship location in their operations, and that the Baptistois tourism industry is not facing a downturn.

Citizens casting their vote on the morning of the 24th
Capital of Mòrainea to move to Arrdea following referendum
Kinross Times

Thursday August 25 2020, 12:07 AM | Kinross, Tìrmon

Following a referendum in the Constituent Country of Mòrainea, the capital city is set to move from Beltra to Arrdea. The referendum, taking place on the Morning of the 24th, was called last year following heated tensions in the Central Belt. A number of other issues were addressed as well, including a 1% raise on the Sales Tax, and laws to designate both contract drivers and sex workers as workers, thus requiring ride-sharing businesses and brothels to establish unions.

While the former capital of Beltra overwhelmingly voted against the move -- those in Arrdea and in the countryside voted for the move, due to public perception that due to Beltra's close proximity to Ùrraon, that it is too heavily influenced by corporate and federal interests. The legislature is to move to the Palace of Roscrea, a former royal palace used by the disestablished Monarchy of Tìrmon. The move is expected to be finalised by the end of 2022, in time for the Mòrainean Elections in 2023.

Not sure why they voted on such a minute issue.. Honestly, the tax and unions deserve the headline more than this.

Cool. Beltra felt super disconnected from the rest of Mòrainea, so this will be positive methinks.

Amand Ambassador Daphnée Sara Caron (above)

Pierre Vidal | Monday September 7 2020, 8:25 PM | Colette, Amandine

On Sunday, September 6th, the State Department released a public statement nominating Ambassador Daphnée Sara Caron (née Robert) to the Amand Mission to Tìrmon. While President Simone Lachance has frequently swiveled between diplomats over her three years across missions, this replacement is a significant move for her administration and for Amandine's foreign policy at large. Since the syndicalist Tìrmoni Revolution in 1917, Amandine claimed the Democratic Republic as an illegitimate government "unrepresentative of the well-intentioned citizen" (Secretary of State Manu Vidal, 1921). While this precedent was set for the following decades, it was only until 1949 when President Henri Philippe's administration altered Amandine's stance, finally recognizing the state in a limited capacity. Even though Philippe was on record discussing his support for a Tìrmoni government involved in a post-Second Great War Auressia, his actions were far more moderate to appeal to a growing faction of conservative parliament members who reluctantly agreed to any change at all. Only five years later, Amandine once again struck against the Democratic Republic, placing harsh embargoes and pushing allied powers to do the same. Finally, Les Démocrates Libéraux in 1989 lifted economic sanctions and established a permanent mission in Ùrraon; even with this progress, relations persisted with unsubstantial support as Tìrmon slowly faded from Amand foreign interests.

Following her foreign policy commitments of expanding market access to governments outside of the liberal sphere, President Simone Lachance has replaced the current ambassador with Mrs. Caron, arguably one of Amandine's most experienced diplomats. As a seasoned figure in the Foreign Service, Ambassador Caron first began her career in 1986 with a position in Saint-Baptiste. Since then, she has led missions in Rocia, Aiyaca, and Rythene (for a short period), with her name on the shortlist for Secretary of State in 2010. With her tenure, the Lachance Administration hopes that Tìrmon's government will be closer to normalizing relations in the near future. Ultimately, the two parties seek to collaborate in consumer technological and medical research, foreign market opportunities, and trans-Hesperian commercial flight access. Even though these proposed goals are not concrete, Ambassador Caron recently stated:

"Under this Administration, I have seen foreign policy decisions that truly give people like me the necessary resources to make real change in an ever-connective world. Tìrmon is a nation that deserves the full attention of Amandine's Federal Republic, and I will ensure that President Lachance's goals are met in a timely and lasting manner".

Now-former Ambassador Edgard Planque has been relieved of his duties for the time being and gave his congratulations to the new leadership change hours after the declaration was made. Planque, the Ambassador of Tìrmon since 2002, and President Lachance have had a contentious relationship over the years with fundamental ideological disagreements stalling developments in Lachance's foreign policy plans in Western Auressia. While it is unknown if Ambassador Planque will have a newfound role in the Administration, President Lachance did not rule out such an idea. L'Ouest will continue to monitor the situation over the coming weeks.

Pierre Vidal is a senior political analyst for L'Ouest. As a dedicated staff member since 2012, Mr. Vidal has written on Amand foreign policy related to Western and Northern Auressia, while also spending time on the ground in Tìrmon and Rythene. In his free time, Vidal enjoys drawing, notably of Tyrnican wolves and Albrennian ospreys. He also loves to spend time with his family and enjoys taking long hikes with them along the Adrienne Sea's Amand beaches. Read more.
