MAVINET'S OFFICIAL DOMESTIC FOOTBALL NEWSWIRE

After a fairly successful entry into international football, with a 3rd place finish in the 47th Di Bradini Cup and a trophy to bring home in the 72nd Baptism of Fire, the Mavinese Football Association (MFA) announced their plan to reform the domestic football system with the goal to further professionalize the league and incentivize clubs to improve their performance. The M1 League and M2 League will now replace the National League as the domestic league system in Mavinet.

Mavinet’s domestic football system started in the mid-1970s, when several semi-professional clubs across the country formed the first A1 Football League. The original league had 8 clubs competing but with very loosely defined rules and regulations, changing its name and the number of club participating several time during its existence from 1976 to 1990 as more clubs entered the scene.

From 1990 to 2000, the A1 Football League expanded to 16 clubs and was split into two groups based on geography, with the winner of each group play each other in a championship match to determine the champion of the season.

From 2000 to 2019, due to increased expense of holding regional groups and to open up the league to more clubs, the A1 Football League was reformed into the National League. The reorganized league had 20 teams all competed in a double round-robin format with no promotion or relegation.

With the advent of the new league system this year, the 20 teams competing in the previous season are again split into 2 groups. The top 10 teams will compete in the M1 League, while the bottom 10 will play in the lower M2 League. Each team will play every other teams 4 times a season, which adds up to a total of 36 rounds and 180 games per season, going from July to May of next year. The clubs will have a 1-month break in between the two halves of the season. At the end of the season, the league winner along with 3 other top teams will be qualified for participation in the multiverse IFCF competitions. The bottom 2 teams will be relegated to the M2 League, replaced by the top 2 clubs from the second division. There is no relegation in the M2 League for the time being.

Running alongside the leagues is the Mavinet Cup. The bottom 4 clubs from each division will play among themselves in the preliminary round to pick out 4 clubs, 2 from each division, that go on to play along with the rest of the clubs in the proper tournament. Matches from the Round of 16 to the Semifinals are played over two legs on a home and away basis. The aggregate score determines the winner and the away goals rule is applied in case of a tie aggregate. The final will be played at Thang Long Stadium in Dai Hoa in one match.

SEASON 1 PREVIEW

The inaugural season of the new league system in Mavinet features 10 teams that ranked on the top half of the National League last season. The usual excitement will now be complemented by the extra tension coming from the threat of relegation should clubs not performing to the best of their abilities. Who will come out on top, who will stay up and who will come down at the end of the season? Let’s take a look at our 10 competitors.

Based in the city of Vĩnh Thủy, ALT Vĩnh Thủy are one of the biggest sides in Mavinet and a main contender for the league title, along with Vĩnh An Đại Hòa and Phúc Châu Port. Formed by bankers and wealthy merchants after Vĩnh Thủy became a new industrial and commercial center in the later half of the 20th century, ALT Vĩnh Thủy build themselves on the deep pockets of their founders and sponsors. The team spare little with regards to recruitment of the best players and most talented youngsters in the league. The club share a local rivalry with MCB Đại Nam and a national rivalry with Vĩnh An Đại Hòa due to the many times the 2 clubs compete for the league title and national cup.

BAC BINH FC

Capacity: 7,500

Team colors: Bright green and red
Predicted finish: 10th

The only football team representing the Northern region, Bắc Bình FC focus on building their team with minority ethnic players from this mountainous region. The team receive strong support from the ethnic populations, especially the Thai and Tay, and their home matches always see a fully filled stadium. However, the lack of financial strength and the relatively low level of infrastructure in the region mean that the team don’t have a lot of money or facilities to build up their strength, resulting in their constant struggle at the bottom of the table. Their tendency to recruit and use physical players also makes them unappealing to lowland people who like attractive football.

LOKA TRUNG SON
Location: Trung Son District, Dai Hoa

Capacity: 15,318
Manager: Phạm Hùng Thuận
Team colors: Cyan and white
Predicted finish: 7th

The youngest of the 3 clubs based in the capital city Đại Hòa, Trung Sơn FC started out as the football team of the Trung Son University of Sport. The team played in the inter-collegiate league in its early days, gradually building up their history and reputation as a strong team in the junior level. Graduates of the university, with permission from the management board, formed a senior, professional club to compete in the newly-formed National League. The young club often find themselves in the lower half of the table. With an origin as a junior-level team, Trung Sơn FC have been steadfast in their focus on young players and youth development. This approach is further complemented by the club’s access to Trung Son University’s high-quality training facilities and talented pool of young players.

MCB DAI NAM
Location: Vinh Thuy, Dong Kinh Province
Stadium: Khánh Hội Stadium
Capacity: 18,256
Manager: Kha Quang Hiền
Team colors: Orange
Predicted finish: 5th

MCB Đại Nam are the other half (or one third, due to their inferior status) of the football culture in the city of of Vĩnh Thủy. Formed only shortly after ALT Vĩnh Thủy, Đại Nam FC found themselves struggle to compete with their financially powerful neighbor. Several years of mismanagement added to their difficult situation. Recent acquisition from the Minh Châu Bank (MCB) and a restructure of the management board brought the club back on their feet. MCB Đại Nam have consistently stayed in the mid-table region, with recent developments suggest they are fighting their way into the top group of the league. The local derbies between MCB Đại Nam and ALT Vĩnh Thủy are usually heated occasions.

NAM QUAN STEELERS
Location: Nam Quan, Thuan Nam Province
Stadium: Thiết Thành Stadium
Capacity: 21,256
Manager: Đinh Phụng Hiếu
Team colors: Red and blue
Predicted finish: 6th

Based in the industrial city of Nam Quan, the Steelers’ origin is embedded in their name. A fairly average team among other big names, Nam Quan Steelers do live up to their moniker with a heavily defensive style. Nicknamed The Steel Wall of the South, the club focus primarily on the art of frustrating opponents’ attackers and waiting patiently for the right opportunity to break away. Some of the best defenders in the country started their careers at this club. However, unimpressive records in recent years caused some of their best players to leave in search for higher glories.

PHUC CHAU PORT
Location: Phuc Chau, Phuc Chau Province
Stadium: Phố Quán Stadium
Capacity: 32,400
Manager: Đặng Xuân Dinh
Team colors: Red and white
Predicted finish: 2nd

Another giant of Mavinet’s football and the traditional rival of Vĩnh An Đại Hòa, Phúc Châu Port originated from group of harbor workers at the city of Phúc Châu. One of the original clubs in the first league of Mavinet, Phúc Châu Port have locked horns with Vĩnh An Đại Hòa since their early days. Almost everything about the club’s backgrounds build up to their rivalry: Phúc Châu’s importance as a seaport contrast with Đại Hòa’s power as an in-land capital, while the harbors compete with the railroads in the age of industrialization. Phúc Châu Port’s personnel and fans take pride in the club’s independence from big sponsors, but that also means they lose out somewhat to their rivals in terms of capitals and ability to easily secure the best players. Their reputation as one of the best teams in the league makes up for that as the club continue to build themselves with prudence.

SONG TRANH FC
Location: Tan An, An Phu Province
Stadium: Đồng Diều Stadium
Capacity: 8,562
Manager: Nguyễn Hào Phong
Team colors: Purple and white
Predicted finish: 9th

Representing the agricultural core of Mavinet, Sông Tranh FC are one of the younger members of domestic football’s scene. Formed out of the desire to bring football to the poorer agricultural workers, Sông Tranh FC are well-liked in the Four An Delta Region (the main rice growing area of Mavinet). They have a rivalry with Nam Quan Steelers the agricultural workers’ dislike for heavy industrialization and encroaching big corporations. Despite being laughed at as a “backward race” by fans of the big clubs, the competition between these two teams at the bottom of the league is just as intense as that at the top.

TELCOMMAVI FC
Location: District 7, Dai Hoa
Stadium: TelcomMavi Stadium
Capacity: 28,052
Manager: Hồ Đắc Đông
Team colors: Green
Predicted finish: 4th

The third team based in the capital Đại Hòa, TelcomMavi FC started as the football team of the Mavinet’s Armed Forces. They competed in the first league of Mavinet, and is one of the clubs still operating until the present. The management of the club was later transferred to Telecom Mavinet, a telecommunication group majority-owned and operated by the Ministry of Defense. TelcomMavi FC are a strong team with a rich history of winning several league titles and competing regularly with Vĩnh An Đại Hòa and Phúc Châu Port. A combination of physical and creative players in their squad makes for a well-rounded team. The recent slump in performance, however, means that their competitiveness has taken a hit and it remains to be seen whether they can regain their edge with the new manager Hồ Đắc Đông.

Predicted finish: 8th

One of the lesser teams of the league, Thương Giang FC are based in the city of Nhị Hà in Hà Tiên Province. The first team to form in the eastern region, Thương Giang FC finished mid-table for a few years in the National League. Their golden generation brought the team to third place and into the cup semifinals in 2014. The loss of half of their lineup afterward to bigger teams in the league left the club unable to adequately replace them and led to their drop to the bottom region of the league.

The oldest football club in the country, Vĩnh An Đại Hòa was formerly known as Railway FC and were founded by a group of employees at the National Railway Company. The club played in the first football league of Mavinet before the formation of the National Football League, when the club changed its name to Đại Hòa FC. Vĩnh An Corporation has been the title sponsor of the club since their fourth season in the National Football League. Based in the populous and economically strong capital city of Đại Hòa, Vĩnh An Đại Hòa established themselves as the leading powerhouse of Mavinet’s domestic football. MATCHDAY 1
Vĩnh An Đại Hòa 4-1 Bắc Bình FC
Phúc Châu Port 2-0 Sông Tranh FC
ALT Vĩnh Thủy 1-3 Thương Giang FC
TelcomMavi FC 2-1 LoKa Trung Sơn
MCB Đại Nam 1-1 Nam Quan Steelers

The first matchday of the newly-formed top division is much anticipated by football fans across the country. After several months of break, the clubs are ready to go back and get off to as best a start as they can. Last season champions Vinh An Dai Hoa started off strong with a dominant 4-1 win against the Northern region’s representatives Bac Binh FC.

Another title contender, Phuc Chau Port, also record their first win against the underdogs Song Tranh FC. Young striker Phạm Thái Gia tentatively leads the top scorer list with a double, while Phuc Chau’s defense easily keep their clean sheet with a no-nonsense display.

An opening day upset in Vinh Thuy sees Thuong Giang FC take down ALT Vinh Thuy with 3 goals to 1. Mavinet’s international Vũ Tiến Linh proves his quality with 1 goal and 2 assists against the southern giant.

MATCHDAY 2
Sông Tranh FC 0-1 Vĩnh An Đại Hòa
Thương Giang FC 2-2 Bắc Bình FC
LoKa Trung Sơn 0-2 Phúc Châu Port
Nam Quan Steelers 0-1 ALT Vĩnh Thủy
MCB Đại Nam 3-1 TelcomMavi FC

Unlucky Song Tranh FC continue to face another title favorite in Vinh An Dai Hoa and suffer their second successive defeat despite a brave performance. Vinh An Dai Hoa are dominant for much of the match but only manage to fire 1 into Song Tranh’s net thanks to Hồ Vũ Thanh Hoàng’s deflected shot in the 63rd minute.

ALT Vinh Thuy get their first win after a disappointing first round against Nam Quan Steelers, while on the other side of Vinh Thuy City, top 4 contender TelcomMavi FC are fell by MCB Dai Nam.

MATCHDAY 3
Vĩnh An Đại Hòa 2-1 Thương Giang FC
Sông Tranh FC 0-1 LoKa Trung Sơn
Bắc Bình FC 1-1 Nam Quan Steelers
Phúc Châu Port 2-2 MCB Đại Nam
ALT Vĩnh Thủy 3-1 TelcomMavi FC

A defeat at home for Song Tranh FC against LoKa Trung Son makes it 3 loss in 3 matches for them. Not a good start in the new league, although to be fair, the fixtures have not been kind to them.

Phuc Chau Port were held on to a draw by a persistent MCB Dai Nam, who equalize the score with just 2 minutes on the clock. This is a setback for the Port as Vinh An Dai Hoa continue their streak with a close-fought victory over Thuong Giang FC.

Meanwhile, another trip to Vinh Thuy ends in disaster for TelcomMavi FC as the side lose 1-3 to ALT Vinh Thuy.

MATCHDAY 4
LoKa Trung Sơn 2-2 Vĩnh An Đại Hòa
Nam Quan Steelers 1-0 Thương Giang FC
MCB Đại Nam 1-0 Sông Tranh FC
TelcomMavi FC 3-0 Bắc Bình FC
ALT Vĩnh Thủy 4-5 Phúc Châu Port

Vinh An Dai Hoa’s winning streak ends with the first capital derby of the season. 4 goals are shared between Vinh An Dai Hoa and LoKa Trung Son in a match that features 2 of the most promising young wingers of Mavinet – Hồ Vũ Thanh Hoàng of Vinh An Dai Hoa and Mai Quang Phuoc of LoKa Trung Son.

TelcomMavi pick up 3 points at home after a sluggish start to the season, while a 9-goal tug at Vinh Thuy between ALT Vinh Thuy and Phuc Chau Port presents the most exciting match to date. The defense of both team will have a lot to answer after the match, but the head coaches can at least be pleased with the quality of attacks.

MATCHDAY 5
Vĩnh An Đại Hòa 4-0 Nam Quan Steelers
LoKa Trung Sơn 1-1 MCB Đại Nam
Thương Giang FC 0-0 TelcomMavi FC
Sông Tranh FC 5-0 ALT Vĩnh Thủy
Bắc Bình FC 1-2 Phúc Châu Port

Nam Quan Steelers – dubbed the Steel Wall of the South – fail to stop the momentum of the giant locomotive Vinh An Dai Hoa, as the latter demolish the southern wall with ease. But even their 4-goal margin can’t beat the massive upset happening in Tan An City, where Song Tranh FC fire into ALT Vinh Thuy’s net as many goals as they have conceded thus far. 5 goals from the front duo Cao Trung Sơn and Lê Minh Quốc leave ALT Vinh Thuy shell-shocked as the money-filled club fail to respond even once.

MATCHDAY 6
MCB Đại Nam 0-0 Vĩnh An Đại Hòa
TelcomMavi FC 2-1 Nam Quan Steelers
ALT Vĩnh Thủy 1-1 LoKa Trung Sơn
Phúc Châu Port 1-1 Thương Giang FC
Bắc Bình FC 1-3 Sông Tranh FC

A fairly drab round with not a lot of goals or significant events to report. The most interesting thing is all 3 big clubs, Vinh An Dai Hoa, ALT Vinh Thuy and Phuc Chau Port were held to a draw. TelcomMavi take the opportunity to close down the gap with the top dogs and get all 3 points against Nam Quan Steelers.

MATCHDAY 7
Vĩnh An Đại Hòa 1-3 TelcomMavi FC
MCB Đại Nam 1-1 ALT Vĩnh Thủy
Nam Quan Steelers 1-2 Phúc Châu Port
LoKa Trung Sơn 1-0 Bắc Bình FC
Thương Giang FC 4-0 Sông Tranh FC

Vinh An Dai Hoa’s record in capital derbies is not looking great with a loss to TelcomMavi FC. The army club got a huge win over their local rivals and reduce the gap between the two down to only 1 point. Phuc Chau Port, on the other hand, extend the lead on top to 3 points with a 2-1 win over Nam Quan Steelers.

On the other end, Bac Binh FC continue their woeful run with another loss to LoKa Trung Son. Head coach Lò Thanh Thảo’s position is on fire, although the expectation for Bac Binh FC was not high. Still, 2 points in 7 matches is not acceptable at the top level, and Bac Binh FC may consider other alternatives if results are not improved soon.

MATCHDAY 8
ALT Vĩnh Thủy 4-2 Vĩnh An Đại Hòa
Phúc Châu Port 1-3 TelcomMavi FC
Bắc Bình FC 1-2 MCB Đại Nam
Sông Tranh FC 0-2 Nam Quan Steelers
Thương Giang FC 0-2 LoKa Trung Sơn

Second loss in a row for Vinh An Dai Hoa see the capital giant fall to third while TelcomMavi FC continue their impressive recovery from a slow start with another win against a title competitor. TelcomMavi FC’s squad is hitting high form with Phan Đức Nghĩa being the brightest of the bunch, leading most of the club’s lethal attacks from midfield. The result also means that Phuc Chau Port are held back. Although the Port are still holding the lead, the gap between the top and the fourth-ranked club is only a win away. The last match of the first quarter can change the landscape at the top if results are decisive.

MATCHDAY 9
Vĩnh An Đại Hòa 2-2 Phúc Châu Port
ALT Vĩnh Thủy 0-1 Bắc Bình FC
TelcomMavi FC 0-1 Sông Tranh FC
MCB Đại Nam 5-0 Thương Giang FC
Nam Quan Steelers 2-0 LoKa Trung Sơn

Matchday 9 witness the first Clash of the Titans between Vinh An Dai Hoa and Phuc Chau Port. Both teams come into the match determined to get a win, not just to improve their position in the league, but also to extend the record against their biggest rival. This time though, the honor is shared as the teams draw 2-2 on Vinh An Dai Hoa’s Phú Hòa Stadium. Hồ Vũ Thanh Hoàng again gets on the scoresheet for Vinh An Dai Hoa, but his industrious display is not enough to secure 3 points. Phuc Chau Port’s Phạm Thái Gia shine for the western port’s club with a stunner from 18 meters out.

Elsewhere, MCB Dai Nam put 5 in Thuong Giang’s net to claim second place, pushing a frustrated TelcomMavi, who lose to Song Tranh’s late penalty, down to third. Bac Binh FC and Nam Quan Steelers get much needed 3 points, but their positions are far from good.

M1 League Standings after 9 matches:

Pos. Team P W D L For Ag GD Pts
1 Phúc Châu Port 9 5 3 1 19 14 +5 18
2 MCB Đại Nam 9 4 5 0 16 7 +9 17
3 TelcomMavi FC 9 5 1 3 15 11 +4 16
4 Vĩnh An Đại Hòa 9 4 3 2 18 13 +5 15
5 LoKa Trung Sơn 9 3 3 3 9 10 -1 12
6 ALT Vĩnh Thủy 9 3 2 4 15 19 -4 11
7 Nam Quan Steelers 9 3 2 4 9 11 -2 11
8 Thương Giang FC 9 2 3 4 11 14 -3 9
9 Sông Tranh FC 9 3 0 6 9 12 -3 9
10 Bắc Bình FC 9 1 2 6 8 18 -10 5

One fourth of the season has passed. Phuc Chau Port takes the pole position going into the second quarter, but the lead is extremely narrow. MCB Dai Nam, TelcomMavi and Vinh An Dai Hoa, 1 point separated from each other, follow the leaders closely. Vinh An Dai Hoa could have done better at times, but everyone knows that competition will be much higher than previous seasons when teams have much more incentive to do their best on matchdays.

On the other end, Bac Binh FC and Song Tranh FC are finding themselves in tough situations. The difference in players quality and investment level is starting to show. No actions have been taken by the management board of these clubs, but things will need to look a lot better from now on if the head coaches want to keep their seat until the end of the season.

The biggest surprise, perhaps, is how far down the ranking ALT Vinh Thuy are. Despite heavy spending on players and training facilities, it seems the results are not up to par with their investment. A disappointing 11 points after 9 matches and losing more than winning are facts that certainly will not please the upper management. Head coach Lê Văn Định should remember that ALT Vinh Thuy will not hesitate to give him the sack if they feel the trend won’t improve soon enough.

MATCHDAY 10
Bắc Bình FC 1-1 Vĩnh An Đại Hòa
Sông Tranh FC 2-3 Phúc Châu Port
Thương Giang FC 2-0 ALT Vĩnh Thủy
LoKa Trung Sơn 0-0 TelcomMavi FC
Nam Quan Steelers 1-1 MCB Đại Nam

A couple of unexpected results on matchday 11 as Vinh An Dai Hoa fail to subdue a stubborn Bac Binh FC while ALT Vinh Thuy are made to rue missed chances with a 0-2 defeat at Thuong Giang FC. The poor form streak continues for ALT Vinh Thuy.

MATCHDAY 11
Vĩnh An Đại Hòa 2-1 Sông Tranh FC
Bắc Bình FC 0-1 Thương Giang FC
Phúc Châu Port 1-0 LoKa Trung Sơn
ALT Vĩnh Thủy 2-0 Nam Quan Steelers
TelcomMavi FC 2-0 MCB Đại Nam

A round with no draw! And no surprise either. TelcomMavi jump up to second with a convincing win against current top 4 team MCB Dai Nam. Phan Đức Nghĩa provides another 2 assists for TelcomMavi, topping the assist chart and getting some attention from the national team folks. It will not be a surprise if he gets a call-up from the impressive displays so far.

Phuc Chau Port extend the lead up top to 4 points, but should be wary of the next few games against direct competitors.

MATCHDAY 12
Thương Giang FC 1-5 Vĩnh An Đại Hòa
LoKa Trung Sơn 3-0 Sông Tranh FC
Nam Quan Steelers 1-0 Bắc Bình FC
MCB Đại Nam 2-2 Phúc Châu Port
TelcomMavi FC 0-1 ALT Vĩnh Thủy

The race at the top is getting more heated as the matchdays go by. League leaders Phuc Chau Port are held to a draw by MCB Dai Nam, who are doing a lot better than expected up to this point. TelcomMavi lose their second spot to Vinh An Dai Hoa after a loss to ALT Vinh Thuy.

Vinh An Dai Hoa, on a clear evening, assert their dominance over Thuong Giang FC with a 5-1 win and climb up to second. New striker Trần Trọng Trí has a field day on the Nhi Ha City Stadium, scoring his first hat-trick of the season. Trần Trọng Trí was second-choice striker for Vinh An Dai Hoa last season, but get his chance to start after the club loan their best striker Võ Thanh Hải to Banija’s Igulu City FC. If he can continue his fine form, head coach Vũ Thế Phong will have serious headache next season when Võ Thanh Hải return.

MATCHDAY 13
Vĩnh An Đại Hòa 1-1 LoKa Trung Sơn
Thương Giang FC 0-0 Nam Quan Steelers
Sông Tranh FC 1-1 MCB Đại Nam
Bắc Bình FC 2-2 TelcomMavi FC
Phúc Châu Port 4-4 ALT Vĩnh Thủy

Another drab capital derby between Vinh An Dai Hoa and LoKa Trung Son end in a 1-all, but a bizarre evening would see that all matches end indecisively. No club get all 3 points, and the table won’t change for another week.

MATCHDAY 14
Nam Quan Steelers 1-3 Vĩnh An Đại Hòa
MCB Đại Nam 1-0 LoKa Trung Sơn
TelcomMavi FC 0-1 Thương Giang FC
ALT Vĩnh Thủy 1-1 Sông Tranh FC
Phúc Châu Port 2-1 Bắc Bình FC

Thuong Giang stage an upset on matchday 14 with Vũ Tiến Linh again provide the winning goal for the eastern club. TelcomMavi’s defense fail to contain the pacey winger and suffer for it. Elsewhere, Vinh An Dai Hoa continue to follow the league leaders closely with another win against Nam Quan Steelers. The Steelers are not looking great, staying only 5 points above the relegation zone with 2 difficult matches coming up.

Bac Binh FC are finally giving head coach Lò Thanh Thảo a deadline to improve the club’s standing: at the mid-season point. He will need to get Bac Binh out of the relegation zone by then. A challenging task with only 4 more matches to go and a gap of 9 points to close down. His assistant Cù Thế Lân is set to take his place as interim head coach in the event of a termination.

MATCHDAY 15
Vĩnh An Đại Hòa 2-2 MCB Đại Nam
Nam Quan Steelers 0-1 TelcomMavi FC
LoKa Trung Sơn 2-1 ALT Vĩnh Thủy
Thương Giang FC 2-2 Phúc Châu Port
Sông Tranh FC 0-0 Bắc Bình FC

Both the leaders and the second place are held down this round. Vinh An Dai Hoa are lucky to keep 1 point at home after going 2 goal down at half time, thanks to Hồ Vũ Thanh Hoàng’s explosive super-sub performance in the second half and Trần Trọng Trí’s composure on the spot 10 minute to time. MCB Dai Nam will be complaining for a while with the referee’s decision to award the penalty as Hồ Vũ Thanh Hoàng seems to have dived in the box.

A bit less lucky is ALT Vinh Thuy’s head coach Lê Văn Định, who is sacked after the loss on LoKa Trung Sơn’s ground. Assistant coach Nguyễn Khánh Trung will take the hotseat temporarily while the club reassess the situation and look for an alternative.

MATCHDAY 16
TelcomMavi FC 1-6 Vĩnh An Đại Hòa
ALT Vĩnh Thủy 0-0 MCB Đại Nam
Phúc Châu Port 0-0 Nam Quan Steelers
Bắc Bình FC 1-1 LoKa Trung Sơn
Sông Tranh FC 1-2 Thương Giang FC

Vinh An Dai Hoa finally find their fortune in the capital derbies with a 6-1 thrashing at TelcomMavi’s. The army club will wonder what went wrong after scoring a goal just 2 minutes after kickoff. A fairytale becomes a nightmare as Trần Hoàng Minh and Hồ Vũ Thanh Hoàng work hard to make sure there is no doubt to the black-and-yellow’s victory.

The victory proves vital to the title race as Phuc Chau Port hit their heads against a steel wall. Nam Quan Steelers put up a performance worthy of their reputation, shutting down every Phuc Chau’s attempts to find a goal. The gap is now down to 1 point.

ALT Vinh Thuy and MCB Dai Nam provide more heated occasions than goals in their second Vinh Thuy derby. A red card for Trần Lê Nguyên Vũ and Nguyễn Hữu Nghĩa will be a heavy blow to both teams’ efforts to get in the top 4.

MATCHDAY 17
Vĩnh An Đại Hòa 1-0 ALT Vĩnh Thủy
TelcomMavi FC 1-2 Phúc Châu Port
MCB Đại Nam 1-1 Bắc Bình FC
Nam Quan Steelers 2-0 Sông Tranh FC
LoKa Trung Sơn 0-1 Thương Giang FC

The matchday see direct confrontations between the traditional top 4 teams. Vinh An Dai Hoa continue their upward momentum with a 1-0 win over ALT Vinh Thuy, who have yet to improve under interim coach Nguyễn Khánh Trung. Nearby in Dai Hoa, Phuc Chau Port steal 3 points from TelcomMavi FC with Nguyễn Quang Khải to thank for a neatly-placed header in the second half.

The Hammer-Sickle Battle between Nam Quan Steelers and Song Tranh FC end with the industrialists claiming bragging rights. It’s 2 in 2 for the Steelers, but their positions are not too far apart. Meanwhile, head coach Lò Thanh Thảo will surely be sacked at the end of the next matchday as there is no possibility for Bac Binh FC to end the second quarter anywhere above the relegation zone.

MATCHDAY 18
Phúc Châu Port 1-1 Vĩnh An Đại Hòa
Bắc Bình FC 0-2 ALT Vĩnh Thủy
Sông Tranh FC 2-2 TelcomMavi FC
Thương Giang FC 1-0 MCB Đại Nam
LoKa Trung Sơn 0-0 Nam Quan Steelers

The last matchday before the mid-season break sees another draw between the top two clubs, this time only 1 for each. Except for the few goals between them, there is no shortage of exciting moments as both clubs bring their best formation to the match. In the end, Trần Trọng Trí’s 25th minute goal is cancelled out by Phạm Thái Gia’s 67th minute freekick masterpiece.

MCB Dai Nam and TelcomMavi both fail to capitalize on the top dogs’ result. Most noticeably, Thuong Giang FC stage an unlikely rise to the upper echelon of the table with a win against MCB Dai Nam. Bac Binh FC terminate the contract with Head coach Lò Thanh Thảo but will likely not looking for a new head coach immediately.

M1 League Standings at mid-season:

Pos. Team P W D L For Ag GD Pts
1 Phúc Châu Port 18 9 8 1 36 27 +9 35
2 Vĩnh An Đại Hòa 18 9 7 2 40 22 +18 34
3 Thương Giang FC 18 8 5 5 22 22 +0 29
4 MCB Đại Nam 18 5 11 2 24 17 +7 26
5 TelcomMavi FC 18 7 4 7 24 25 -1 25
6 ALT Vĩnh Thủy 18 6 5 7 26 29 -3 23
7 LoKa Trung Sơn 18 5 7 6 16 16 +0 22
8 Nam Quan Steelers 18 5 6 7 14 18 -4 21
9 Sông Tranh FC 18 3 4 11 17 28 -11 13
10 Bắc Bình FC 18 1 7 10 14 29 -15 10

Phuc Chau Port continue to hold the lead coming into the mid-season break. The gap is not wider with the chaser Vinh An Dai Hoa only 1 point behind, but the distances between the clubs in the top 4 are widened somewhat outside of the top 2 positions. A series of good results propels Thuong Giang into the top 4, while ALT Vinh Thuy are still trying to find their way back to the top with their head coach gone after just 15 matches this season.

The lowest two positions are looking more and more consolidated, although there is still another half a season to change things around. Bac Binh FC, unsurprisingly, decide to part way with their head coach at the half way point. Unless there is heavy personnel changes happening over the break, however, their outcome isn’t likely to change dramatically.

Only 8 points between the 3rd placed team and the 8th placed team. Enough good results can push a club from the lower half of the table to the top half, but the opposite movement can also happen with a series of bad performances. Clubs in this region can’t afford to be complacent now that the season is entering its crucial second portion.

MATCHDAY 19
Vĩnh An Đại Hòa 2-1 Bắc Bình FC
Phúc Châu Port 4-0 Sông Tranh FC
ALT Vĩnh Thủy 3-2 Thương Giang FC
TelcomMavi FC 0-0 LoKa Trung Sơn
MCB Đại Nam 1-0 Nam Quan Steelers

The second half of the season commences! Phuc Chau Port show that they had a good break and was raring to go off strong again. Vinh An Dai Hoa don’t give up an inch either, although they have much more difficulty subduing Bac Binh FC at home. In the end, it’s striker Trần Trọng Trí’s goal that separate the sides.

The top two clubs start to build up some distance to the rest of the pack thanks to Thuong Giang FC and TelcomMavi’s slip-ups. 8 points separate the heads and the rest, but as we have seen so far, everything can change rapidly in just a few rounds.

MATCHDAY 20
Sông Tranh FC 2-2 Vĩnh An Đại Hòa
Thương Giang FC 1-0 Bắc Bình FC
LoKa Trung Sơn 3-3 Phúc Châu Port
Nam Quan Steelers 0-1 ALT Vĩnh Thủy
MCB Đại Nam 1-0 TelcomMavi FC

Just as we predicted in the last round, the gap at the top again is reduced to 6 points between the second and third teams. Both Vinh An Dai Hoa and Phuc Chau Port fail to get 3 points, while Thuong Giang push ahead with a win. ALT Vinh Thuy also get another important 3 points to keep up their hope to break in the top 4, now only 3 points away.

MATCHDAY 21
Vĩnh An Đại Hòa 6-0 Thương Giang FC
Sông Tranh FC 0-0 LoKa Trung Sơn
Bắc Bình FC 0-1 Nam Quan Steelers
Phúc Châu Port 1-0 MCB Đại Nam
ALT Vĩnh Thủy 1-1 TelcomMavi FC

A season record is broken! Vinh An Dai Hoa prove that they can be brutally efficient with their attacks on a good day. 6 goals to nil against an in-form Thuong Giang FC is as good an indication of the capital giant’s firepower as it can get. Vũ Tiến Linh puts in an admirable effort to regain control of the match for Thuong Giang, but his squad’s collective performance is much inferior to that of his national teammate Ho Vu Thanh Hoang’s. But even a 6-goal demolish is still not enough to get Vinh An Dai Hoa the top spot when Phuc Chau Port continue to win at home to MCB Dai Nam.

MATCHDAY 22
LoKa Trung Sơn 3-4 Vĩnh An Đại Hòa
Nam Quan Steelers 2-0 Thương Giang FC
MCB Đại Nam 0-1 Sông Tranh FC
TelcomMavi FC 3-0 Bắc Bình FC
ALT Vĩnh Thủy 4-0 Phúc Châu Port

Vinh An Dai Hoa finally take pole. Even better when it comes after winning a capital derby, although LoKa Trung Son have been unimpressive thus far. Still, the two teams provide much entertainment to the fans with a 7-goal chase. Phuc Chau Port, on the other hand, fall victim to one of ALT Vinh Thuy’s best games this season. The southern giant blast 4 past Phuc Chau’s goalkeeper on a day where both of their strikers hit top confidence. With just 1 win at the right time, ALT Vinh Thuy break into the top 4 and will now look to consolidate this position.

Elsewhere, TelcomMavi also win big with 3 goals against a dispirited Bac Binh FC, who have now on a streak of 13 winless games.

MATCHDAY 23
Vĩnh An Đại Hòa 3-0 Nam Quan Steelers
LoKa Trung Sơn 4-1 MCB Đại Nam
Thương Giang FC 1-3 TelcomMavi FC
Sông Tranh FC 0-1 ALT Vĩnh Thủy
Bắc Bình FC 0-1 Phúc Châu Port

Thuong Giang FC, after a quite successful run at the end of the first half of the season, seem to have hit a slump in their form after the break. A third loss to TelcomMavi at home see head coach Nguyễn Hồng Minh’s side slide down to 5th. ALT Vinh Thuy continue their upward trend with the interim head coach, securing all 3 point with Phạm Thông’s 70th minute strike.

Vinh An Dai Hoa further extend their winning record against Nam Quan Steelers to 3 in 3 this season. The home fans have been enjoying matches against the Steelers, chanting “Can we play Steelers everyweek?” on the stands when Nguyễn Hoàng Sơn scores the third goal for capital club.

MATCHDAY 24
MCB Đại Nam 2-4 Vĩnh An Đại Hòa
TelcomMavi FC 2-0 Nam Quan Steelers
ALT Vĩnh Thủy 0-2 LoKa Trung Sơn
Phúc Châu Port 2-1 Thương Giang FC
Bắc Bình FC 0-1 Sông Tranh FC

LoKa Trung Son, who are having a rather average season, get a rare upset against ALT Vinh Thuy. U-21 nationals Mai Quang Phước and Lâm Văn Đại shine for LoKa Trung Son on a day ALT Vinh Thuy’s defense forget some basic communications principles.

MATCHDAY 25
Vĩnh An Đại Hòa 3-1 TelcomMavi FC
MCB Đại Nam 1-4 ALT Vĩnh Thủy
Nam Quan Steelers 1-2 Phúc Châu Port
LoKa Trung Sơn 1-1 Bắc Bình FC
Thương Giang FC 1-2 Sông Tranh FC

The standings continue to stay the same after matchday 25. Vinh An Dai Hoa extend the winning streak to 5 with a derby win over TelcomMavi. Phuc Chau Port keep the distance within 1 win with the leaders. The distance between them and the third place team is now 12 points, and the season is boiling down to a two-horse race between the two traditional giants.

The race to the top 4 is heating up also. 3 teams just outside the top 4 are having the same 32 points after 25 matches, while only 4 points away. The landscape in the middle of the table can change a lot over the next few rounds.

MATCHDAY 26
ALT Vĩnh Thủy 1-0 Vĩnh An Đại Hòa
Phúc Châu Port 3-3 TelcomMavi FC
Bắc Bình FC 2-1 MCB Đại Nam
Sông Tranh FC 1-0 Nam Quan Steelers
Thương Giang FC 0-2 LoKa Trung Sơn

Vinh An Dai Hoa drop points at a crucial point of the season, falling to ALT Vinh Thuy’s Trần Đức Vinh. Luckily for them, Phuc Chau Port can’t get the win they need at home. Vinh An Dai Hoa’s fans will need to thank local rival TelcomMavi for holding Phuc Chau at 52 points. The gap is down to 1 point, making the outcome of the next match between the top 2 teams even more important.

Song Tranh FC get back at Nam Quan Steelers in the third Hammer-Sickle Battle. 1 goal is all they need to secure the win and several weeks of bragging against the Steelers. Even more important than that is Song Tranh have now caught up to the the Steelers’ position and threaten to push their rival down to the relegation zone.

MATCHDAY 27
Vĩnh An Đại Hòa 0-3 Phúc Châu Port
ALT Vĩnh Thủy 2-0 Bắc Bình FC
TelcomMavi FC 3-0 Sông Tranh FC
MCB Đại Nam 1-1 Thương Giang FC
Nam Quan Steelers 1-0 LoKa Trung Sơn

The third Clash of the Titans at the top can’t be anymore anticipated, as whoever wins this match will be in pole position going into the final quarter of the season. And this time, it is the Port that get all the points. And they do it in a convincing manner. After 2 indecisive matches, Phuc Chau Port turn in one of the best performances of the season, dominating the match despite playing away.

TelcomMavi and ALT Vinh Thuy also wrap up the third quarter with all 3 points to consolidate their position in the top 4. On the other end, Song Tranh can’t get out of the relegation zone just yet as Nam Quan Steelers beat LoKa Trung Son to restore the 3 points gap between them and Song Tranh.

M1 League Standings after the third quarter:

Pos. Team P W D L For Ag GD Pts
1 Phúc Châu Port 27 15 10 2 55 39 +16 55
2 Vĩnh An Đại Hòa 27 15 8 4 64 35 +29 53
3 ALT Vĩnh Thủy 27 13 6 8 43 35 +8 45
4 TelcomMavi FC 27 11 7 9 40 34 +6 40
5 LoKa Trung Sơn 27 8 11 8 31 26 +5 35
6 MCB Đại Nam 27 7 12 8 32 34 -2 33
7 Thương Giang FC 27 9 6 12 29 43 -14 33
8 Nam Quan Steelers 27 8 6 13 19 28 -9 30
9 Sông Tranh FC 27 7 6 14 24 39 -15 27
10 Bắc Bình FC 27 2 8 17 18 42 -24 14

The season is going into the home stretch, and the races are getting more tense. Phuc Chau Port snatch the pole at the last minute, leaving 2 points between them and Vinh An Dai Hoa. The top 4 race is also in its exciting stage, with ALT Vinh Thuy and TelcomMavi currently having the advantage. One can only wonder what happened to MCB Dai Nam and Thuong Giang FC: 5 consecutive losses left them trailing behind, standing at 6th and 7th respectively, with a lot to do to catch up to 4th place TelcomMavi, who are 7 points away.

At the bottom of the table, Bac Binh FC seem to have given up hope of staying up. Song Tranh FC still have a wide door to get through, but they need to step up their games in the last 9 matches of the season. Nam Quan Steelers are in the danger zone, and so are MCB Dai Nam and Thuong Giang FC if they are not careful.

MATCHDAY 28
Bắc Bình FC 1-4 Vĩnh An Đại Hòa
Sông Tranh FC 0-1 Phúc Châu Port
Thương Giang FC 1-1 ALT Vĩnh Thủy
LoKa Trung Sơn 2-4 TelcomMavi FC
Nam Quan Steelers 1-0 MCB Đại Nam

The homestretch is on. Vinh An Dai Hoa and Phuc Chau Port both win their matches away against two relegation candidates. Thuong Giang and MCB Dai Nam, two ex-top 4 clubs are trying to get back to where they were, but their results suggest that will be an uphill battle from now.

MATCHDAY 29
Vĩnh An Đại Hòa 5-2 Sông Tranh FC
Bắc Bình FC 0-2 Thương Giang FC
Phúc Châu Port 4-1 LoKa Trung Sơn
ALT Vĩnh Thủy 1-1 Nam Quan Steelers
TelcomMavi FC 4-1 MCB Đại Nam

The top two teams are stretching the lead against the rest of the league to 12 points, with only 7 more matches to play. Once more, they are showing their power with two convincing wins to drag the title race to as close to the final match as possible.

Thuong Giang get 3 points to keep up their chase of the top 4, but TelcomMavi make sure the gap is kept unchanged with a big win at home to another top 4 hopeful, MCB Dai Nam.

MATCHDAY 30
Thương Giang FC 2-4 Vĩnh An Đại Hòa
LoKa Trung Sơn 3-0 Sông Tranh FC
Nam Quan Steelers 1-1 Bắc Bình FC
MCB Đại Nam 2-2 Phúc Châu Port
TelcomMavi FC 2-1 ALT Vĩnh Thủy

Phuc Chau Port can’t keep up with the pressure and drop point away at MCB Dai Nam to give Vinh An Dai Hoa the perfect chance to catch up. And indeed they did that, with a 4-2 win against Thuong Giang. The score between the top 2 clubs are now equal with Phuc Chau Port on top only by head-to-head records. One more mistake and the pole will be Vinh An Dai Hoa’s.

On the other end, Bac Binh FC are officially relegated after failing to win Nam Quan Steelers. Even with a win, the chance of them staying up is extremely small. It has been a disappointing first season in the new league for the northern club, and the management board will surely look to do better in the next season.

MATCHDAY 31
Vĩnh An Đại Hòa 0-0 LoKa Trung Sơn
Thương Giang FC 1-0 Nam Quan Steelers
Sông Tranh FC 2-0 MCB Đại Nam
Bắc Bình FC 1-0 TelcomMavi FC
Phúc Châu Port 2-2 ALT Vĩnh Thủy

Vinh An Dai Hoa can’t get past Phuc Chau Port just yet, since both teams are held to draws on matchday 31. Bac Binh FC get a late upset against TelcomMavi to dent the latter’s hope of catching up with the top 2 – a result that is largely inconsequential to the current races.

Song Tranh get another 3 points against MCB Dai Nam to make the relegation race more exciting toward the end of the season. Thuong Giang FC also get 3 points to keep up the chase with the top 4. All 3 races are still on hot.

MATCHDAY 32
Nam Quan Steelers 1-2 Vĩnh An Đại Hòa
MCB Đại Nam 5-1 LoKa Trung Sơn
TelcomMavi FC 0-1 Thương Giang FC
ALT Vĩnh Thủy 1-1 Sông Tranh FC
Phúc Châu Port 2-0 Bắc Bình FC

The title race is still undecisive, with Phuc Chau Port holding on to their head-to-head advantage for yet another matchday. Vinh An Dai Hoa get their usual win over Nam Quan Steelers, while Phuc Chau easily get 3 points from an already relegated Bac Binh.

Thuong Giang FC’s Vũ Tiến Linh is pulling his team up by himself with a solo goal in the 58th minute to snatch a win for the eastern club. Thuong Giang are now 2 win away from the top 4.

MATCHDAY 33
Vĩnh An Đại Hòa 2-1 MCB Đại Nam
Nam Quan Steelers 0-3 TelcomMavi FC
LoKa Trung Sơn 1-1 ALT Vĩnh Thủy
Thương Giang FC 2-2 Phúc Châu Port
Sông Tranh FC 2-0 Bắc Bình FC

Vinh An Dai Hoa take advantage of another Phuc Chau Port’s slip-up and push their rival down to second. The Port look shaky in these last few rounds, making several defensive mistakes in crucial matches. Vinh An Dai Hoa, on the other hand, prove they are more composed going into the finale. Can Phuc Chau retake the pole in the last 3 matches? Their oppositions look easier than Vinh An Dai Hoa’s, but with the nervous end of the season approaching, it’s all down to who can stay focused for the whole 90 minutes of each match.

The top 4 race is winding down as well, with TelcomMavi and ALT Vinh Thuy look set to secure their spots in IFCF competitions next season.

At the bottom, Song Tranh FC are closing the distance with Nam Quan Steelers fast. They are now 1 point away from safety, and with Nam Quan Steelers’ abysmal form in the last 5 matches, that 1 point will not be any lifeline for them.

MATCHDAY 34
TelcomMavi FC 1-2 Vĩnh An Đại Hòa
ALT Vĩnh Thủy 2-0 MCB Đại Nam
Phúc Châu Port 1-0 Nam Quan Steelers
Bắc Bình FC 0-0 LoKa Trung Sơn
Sông Tranh FC 3-1 Thương Giang FC

Vinh An Dai Hoa win, but so do Phuc Chau Port. They are neck and neck toward the final 2 matches of the season, and it might come down to the ultimate direct confrontation between the two on matchday 36. Who is going to win it? My guess is as good as anyone’s.

The top 4 race officially ends with Thuong Giang failure to mount any last assault on the fourth position. Although TelcomMavi suffer defeat in the capital derby, Thuong Giang’s loss to relegation candidate Song Tranh FC puts an end to the mid table competition. ALT Vinh Thuy and TelcomMavi can breath a sigh of relief as their IFCF Challenger’s Cup.

One’s sorrow is another’s delight. Thuong Giang’s loss ends the top 4 race but extend the relegation race for Song Tranh, who have now passed Nam Quan Steelers on the table to sit outside of the relegation zone for the first time this season. They will need to hold on to it for another 2 matches, though, as even a draw can be fatal.

MATCHDAY 35
Vĩnh An Đại Hòa 3-0 ALT Vĩnh Thủy
TelcomMavi FC 0-0 Phúc Châu Port
MCB Đại Nam 2-1 Bắc Bình FC
Nam Quan Steelers 1-1 Sông Tranh FC
LoKa Trung Sơn 2-4 Thương Giang FC

Vinh An Dai Hoa have done it! They win the league with just one match left to play, largely thanks to Phuc Chau Port shooting themselves in the leg with a draw at TelcomMavi. Perhaps the capital rivals can share the celebration when both of them have accomplished what they set out to do at the beginning of the season. A difficult evening for Phuc Chau’s fans, but such is the emotions football can bring.

The last race is between Song Tranh FC and Nam Quan Steelers at the bottom of the table. A direct match between the two is a perfect opportunity to settle it, but perhaps ending everything before the finale is a bit disappointing, they hold each other to a draw. At least the fans will have something to look out for in the last matchday.

MATCHDAY 36
Phúc Châu Port 4-3 Vĩnh An Đại Hòa
Bắc Bình FC 0-3 ALT Vĩnh Thủy
Sông Tranh FC 1-2 TelcomMavi FC
Thương Giang FC 0-3 MCB Đại Nam
LoKa Trung Sơn 0-1 Nam Quan Steelers

With everything but the last team to be relegated already decided, the last matchday of the season is almost a friendly round. Phuc Chau Port at least can be happy that they get one last laugh after having to do the guard of honor for the bitter rival. 7 goals in a clear evening surely provide much entertainment to fans of both teams, with Vinh An Dai Hoa’s feeling more exalted seeing their team lift the cup in the first season of the new league.

Meanwhile, the only race left on the day is settled with Nam Quan Steelers winning their last-day lottery. A win at the right place and a right time see the Steelers get all 3 points while Song Tranh FC fall at home to TelcomMavi. Song Tranh will join Bac Binh FC in the M2 League next season, and Nam Quan Steelers’ fans can be relieved but not satisfied with the club’s efforts this season.

A huge upset happened in the Mavinet Cup this season when an M2 League's team defeat one of the strongest teams in the country. The journey to the Final of MavinAir Phu Xuyen is nothing short of a fairytale: They got past eventual M1 League Champions Vinh An Dai Hoa in the Round of 16, deep-pocketed ALT Vinh Thuy in the Quarterfinals and Song Tranh FC in the Semifinals. Their opponent in the final is Phuc Chau Port, a team that just missed the M1 League title by 1 point. A huge underdog, MavinAir Phu Xuyen played bravely and defended very well against Phuc Chau's onslaught. Their late goal in extra time shocked everyone in the stadium, especially their own fans, who celebrated wildly after the final whistle.

With this victory, MavinAir Phu Xuyen will represent Mavinet in the Cup Winners' Cup next season, playing the best of the cup competitions across the multiverse.
