Is this supposed to be a surprise, given how this year's going?

So if Putin is still alive in 2036, they'll change the law again.

Probably not, he'd most likely retire or linger for his successor. At that age everyone needs a rest.

Wait, didn't the amendments Putin proposed limit the terms to 2, consecutive or othervise?

Yeah, we definitely didn't see that coming. Oh wait, we did.

It's not like the referendum was held under fair conditions. They passed the constitutional changes prior to the referendum anyway so a "no" vote (already extremely implausible) wouldn't really change much.

Wait till Trump changes the constitution to keep him in power till 2046. And him dying of old age won't help because he'll make sure Jr. succeeds him. Russia brought back it's Tsar, the GOP will try to bring back it's king.

I'm also curious about what will happen when Putin passes away. Probably more corruption in Russia than ever.

Honestly, I expect something similar to what happened after Stalin died. Political backstabbing, leading to a more liberal president coming into power, and a hilarious movie coming out about it around 70 years later.

This is probably the best scenario frankly. Putin has no heir, and relying on state institutions after his death is obviously a risky gamble.

I heard he's actually looking for a heir in his governors (though that news must be rechecked again). They are still young, and the provinces are a pretty great place to test their capabilities and see how they fare. I mean, if he's going to stay until 2036, having an heir right now doesn't make any sense.

There's a reason Belorussians and Russians have turned 'Anglo' into a slur, the 'intervention' with Rasputin and Imperial politics helped in some regards. It be best if England stays a way before we have a worse outcome.

lol, Belarusians have been trying to distance themselves as much as possible from Russia for the past decade thanks to Russia's interventions/take overs of Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and Crimea/Eastern Ukraine.

...That is, if he's still there in 2036. Be it death by natural causes or a coup d'etat, it's not quite right to say he's definitively there until 2036.

Russia's economy is deep in the crapper and Putin's approval rating has been dropping little by little each year. I don't see anything threatening his grasp on power in the next several years, but let's wait and see. Russia, historically, can be a bit harsh on once popular, long-serving leaders.
