What else will happen next month? A new flu virus that night trigger a second pandemic this year? Oh wait.

TBF this is not really a 2020 thing. Nuclear fallout from Russia happened last year, 2017 and many times before that. This is not unusual.

I think the Fallout 76 launch sums up 2020 perfectly

We were promised a great year with "16 times" the technological advancement, and even including a canvas bag of excellent events.

We instead got a garbage bag (made of nylon) of a year with dumpster fire after dumpster fire, and with various bugs (Corona-Chan, anyone?) that ruin it further.

I am also turning into a Posadist.

It could be a small nuclear accident, like a crane got stuck handling a rod and it overheated.

Or it could be a damn meltdown, and the first detection of radiation just the start of a lot more. At least we'll know soon.

this feels like one of the years when seattle is about to break the record for most rainy days in a row, and everyone has seasonal affective disorder, and we've all reached a certain point where we're like "might as well break the record at this point", except with global horror, catastrophe, and devastation, instead of with rain, and with the whole world instead of seattle

in conclusion, give me all you've got, Leningrad Core 2

The isotopes detected indicate damage to a fuel element, likely it has burned and sent the isotopes into the atmosphere. The Leningrad NPP, one of the plants under suspicion as being the source of this leak, has had problems with storage building fires before, and that's likely what has happened in this instance: a storage building with new fuel or spent fuel has caught fire.

This happened at the start of June, so we would have seen it by now.

True, it very like was a small fire involving spent fuel. The issue is that they are lying and claiming nothing happened.
If they simply announced it happened, that it was dealt with and steps being taken to prevent it in the future it would not be as big a deal.

Um, first you say the source isn't known for sure. Then you say it happened at the start of June.

It was actually detected on the 22nd, while the actual release is likely to have taken place some days before that, so actually mid June. So if it was going to get worse then we would know about it by now. We can say roughly when the release took place, but not exactly where. But there are very few possible candidates, since the isotopes detected are only produced in reactors, and there are only two in the area it could have come from: Leningrad NPP and Kola NPP. It's a simple process of elimination to say it happened in one of them, and Leningrad has a far worse record of accidents than Kola.

Russian Nuclear plant Meltdown because 2020

Postby Greed and Death » Tue Jun 30, 2020 5:24 am

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/worl ... eHy-ik4lfM

Basically Scandinavia is detecting elevated levels of radiation reminiscent of Chernobyl. Russia of course denies any problems with its power plants and says Western Europe is imagining things.

Well Who ever was challenging 2020 to get worse could you please stop ?

Obviously containment is needed. I also feel the west's failure to export their safe and reliable nuclear power plants like Russia has exported and built their boom boxes leads to issues like this.

To summarise what I've said in this thread for the newcomers here because of the merge: the detected isotopes were likely caused by a fire at a storage building that stores spent fuel, rather than a core incident, and the likely locations are either Leningrad NPP or Kola NPP. I'd bet on Leningrad as it has a history of accidents, including specifically a history of fires at storage buildings.
