NSFB: New Washington Prepares for Cassie!

Postby TJUN-ia » Mon Jun 29, 2020 12:42 pm

History will be made tonight at the Gardens of New Washington, NAU Zone. Not only will we host our first ever game of Gridiron football, but the NAU will make its debut in hosting an international event. And what an event to kick us off as the 33rd-ranked Jaguars host the 11th-ranked Dagans of Cassadiagua.

We have played them before - last time out in the Free Republics when they beat us by 8 points in our third ever game. Tonight, however, they must travel to the Field of Dreams and face a crowd looking to cause chaos. The last WB saw the Jags take down the Top 2 seeds in their group and many will be hoping for more of the same tonight.

Gus McKerrin will be hoping that everyone performs to their best tonight, but especially the defence and QB1 Jake Griffin. The aims are simple: to frustrate Megan Schuster's team with good scoring while also preventing opposition QB1 Taylor Crimmins from doing the same. Talyor is 4 years the senior of Jake but if there is time to show off what you can do, it's tonight.

We don't really know what to expect from tonight. Will the Dagans simply blow us over and send us crashing back to reality? Or will the Jaguars cause a day 1 upset that could change the entire picture of the group? The road to Delaclava begins tonight, and we hope you care to join us. GO JAGS!

A Sneaky Group,
by Hannah Rafferty- SS

As we look to build on our performance from World Bowl 38, there is a lot of excitement flowing through our locker room. The majority of us are back in action, hoping to take the experience that we acquired as a building block. Sometimes, this type of campaign can be that step back period too, so we are not getting ahead of ourselves on anything. We got where we are now by working hard, something that we know is a trademark of all of our sporting programs, and we are not about to be the ones that change that. Making the playoffs will be difficult for everyone, I don’t think that there is anyone that can coast through this on past laurels alone. With 48 teams entered and only sixteen advancing, we will be talking about at least one nation that everyone thought would make it, and did not, I can guarantee you that. The organizers, based out of Delaclava, could have made it easier, but that’s not what gets the media sources talking, now is it?

We are ranked 10th in the World, and that put us into the second pot for the group draw. The team in the top pot for our group is Ko-oren, and they are certainly playing for redemption. They were the defending champions in World Bowl 38, and ranked number one in the world. However, they struggled in the group stage, and found themselves watching as the tournament moved forward. They have replaced their coaches, which goes to show you that no one is safe. Just think about it, though, Ko-oren did not make it out of the group stage last time, so if there is any exhibits to be shown to the everyone else for this World Bowl that there is nothing to be taken for granted, that is a pretty large one.

Do not make the mistake of thinking that this group will be a lock for us and the Dragonflies. This is a sneaky tough group, and a big part of that is the team from TJUN-ia. If we just go on past accolades, then they are not going to be intimidating, but I am certain that they are going to be a much team this time out. If there is an example of a team getting valuable experience, then I think they will show it. The Jovannic, an unranked side, may be very pesky, and then the known commodity of The Sarian cannot be overlooked. And if anyone loses to Nagore, they will be regretting it in a big way, but perhaps even they will be a late bloomer here as well. This is not the Group of Death, that very clearly is Group G, but D may spell disaster for a top team in this group if they are not ready for it. We have an important tilt right away against TJUN-ia, on the road. They will be ready for us, but we are also prepared for them.

THE LIONS RETURN!
The Inner AginanaUsordia Lions are returning to the American Football World Bowl in the F Group of play.

Sponsored by Iohanessan Casino Group: Bet With Faith.

Our editors have compiled an analysis of the group, presented below to influence your bets.
The schedule for your Lions is as follows:
vs #55 Bongo Johnson
@ #3 Ranoria
vs UR Lovisa
@ UR Damukuni
vs #10 Newmanistan
Off Day
@ #55 Bongo Johnson
vs #3 Ranoria
@ UR Lovisa
vs UR Damukuni
@ #10 Newmanistan

The first matchup of the XXXIX World Bowl is against Bongo Johnson, who is returning to the World Bowl after a one-tournament hiatus. This matchup will determine the momentum of the 3 and 4 seeded teams in the F Group. With a win, the Lions are likely to carry enough momentum to finish with a winning record. The next matchup, the away team against the very formidable 3rd-ranked Ranoria, pushes the solid but untested Lions far into enemy territory. If the Lions win this game, the boost in momentum will probably propel them to the second round of the tournament, but the likely event of a loss will not disturb their progress. The next games are against the F Group’s unranked teams, Lovisa and Damukuni, which are a must-win if the Lions hope to have a winning record. The fifth game poses another difficult but manageable matchup at home with the 10th ranked Newmanistan. To round out the first half of the group stage, the Lions are on the cusp of the .500 win percentage; the first and fifth games are the least predictable results. The five games are then repeated after an off day, but with the teams switching places at home and away. The Ranoria matchup becomes slightly easier with the home field advantage, but is still likely to fall. Likewise, the Newmanistan team has the hammer with the final game of the series and will be reluctant to lose it. The most important game to win is the Bongo Johnson matchup, as it determines the very important momentum factor. The chances of the Lions going worse than 3-7 are low overall, but rise tremendously in the event of losing the first three games. On the other side, the chances of doing better than 7-3 rest heavily on the 5th and 7th matchups against the two best teams in the F Group.

Here at NS Sports, we particularly love the weird. The upsets, the curses, the sentient cars or horses or Furbies, you name it. So for these cutoffs, instead of a song or poem, I'm going to try to highlight some of the RL weirdness in gridiron.

With that said, let's get down to business. This is your cutoff for Gameday 1!

Well guys, today we will be listing our first member of the World Bowl Dynatsy list. Instead of just going from 5-1 in one go, we will counting down. It is a big giant countdown machine with World Bowl Dynasties on it!

Number Five: Qazox 16-21
Qazox is an old-time World Bowl Power. They where a team that made it far in many tournaments and had a very strong team back in the days of them winning titles. They finished 3rd 3 times from World Bowls 16-19, but could not get past the hump of the Semifinals. They would finally get their chance to shine in World Bowl 21, hosted in Casaratoga. They finished second in the 2nd Group Stage, behind also world power at the time, Cassadaigua. After that, they also played a good game against West Angola, and won 13–10. Then they also beat Osarius to finally to over the hump of the Semifinals. A 12–6 win against Cassadaigua topped off their first and only title campaign.

Northwest Kalactin 0–22 Greater Nordics
Well a horrible game for the Kalactanians today. A 22-0 loss against the Greater Nordics really showed the incompetence of the defense that in the end, wasn’t able to stop a Greater Nordics team. Jack Nelson had a horrible game, throwing 2 interceptions and only throwing for 102 yards in a real shitshow for the team. Nelson is usually a guy that has a big arm, very confident touch on the ball. The Greater Nordics defense though, was an expert at making him pay for the littlest of mistakes. They didn’t force a ton of turnovers, but the Kalactanian team was unable to move the ball on them. On the other side of the ball, it was like Blake Lucas wasn’t there. Lucas wasn’t able to naturally overpower the Greater Nordics Offensive Line, which is relatively unnatural of him. Nelson had 3 sacks forced upon him, and the Offensive Line of the Kalactanian Team would not stop the best edge rushers on the team, such as Stig Burg. Herman Lang, threw for 289, which was a much stronger performance than Nelson. Lang also threw for 2 touchdowns, the first one was to Rain Alver, on a 23 yard touchdown pass that started the game off well for Greater Nordics. Catrine Abel also ran over the Kalactanian defense quite a bit. 108 yards was what he totaled in the game, a good total against a defense with below average run defense. The second touchdown of the game came on a run from Abel, in fact. Abel took the outside edge on the side of the defense that Lucas had under command, and was able to hit the edge hard. He had a lot of speed to get outside the defensive line, and took it to the house from 18 yards out. The final touchdown of the game was on a pass by Lang. Kamilla Jonasen was open in the end zone, the defense was hit with poor morale over the destruction that they had been suffering under so far. Jonasen got an easy pass from Burg, and was able to haul it in for the final touchdown. They the Greater Nordics team did something very unexpected, they went for 2. Was this a way of rubbing it in against the Kalactanian team? The lead was already very safe. It was late in the fourth quarter. Nevertheless, it was a two-point conversion, the Greater Nordics slammed the ball in with Abel, to top the game off at a 22-0 victory. This wasn’t the game the Kalactanians where looking for. They wanted a morale boosting win early, one that could really get them started on a good note. Instead, all they got a was a 22-0 blowout against the goddamn Greater Nordics.

Scoring Events
Herman Lang 23 yard Touchdown Pass to Rain Alver (Kick Good) 7-0
Catrine Abel 18 yard Touchdown Run (Kick Good) 14–0
Lang 16 yard Touchdown Pass to Kamilla Jonasen (2PT Good) 22–0

Road to the World Bowl

The Squidroidian Flyers

Episode 3 - Live on TV

Broadcast music

"Just a few years ago we were marveling at the gridiron of the Army Base, seeing legends of the military show their colors in the big game of this proud land. But now these fine soldiers are flying the flag of the Inkling for their country as they expose themselves to the challenges of the multiverse. As Colonel Tanyu would say, this isn't the Squidroidian Bowl anymore, this is the World Bowl. Hello and welcome to the blue confines of Inkopolis City Stadium, as the Squidroidian Flyers start off their World Bowl XXXIX campaign against fellow minnows Martune. I'm Duri Mochizuki, and just next to me in the commentary booth is former Squidroidian Bowl MVP Yūki Amano. Amano, what do you think about this Squidroidian team?"

"Well let me tell you this, Colonel Tanyu has put his boys through hell and back because really, this schedule is hellish in a sense. Krytenia and Martune are teams we can beat up easily, but looking at Velstrania, Geektopia and especially Main Nation Ministry, or as I would like to call them MNM, we'd be lucky to even go to Delaclava. This World Bowl is about getting to know the world, and a win against Martune would be an amazing start."

"Any predictions about what Martune will do?"

"Here's the problem. I. Don't. Know. Martune have been hush hush on their squad and as far as I know, we don't even know their head coach! All we have to do is to guess what their style is, if it's defense wins championships or a gun-ho approach to gridiron. If anything, we should get the win."

"If this were the SAF Park and not ICS, it would be. But this is a soccer stadium that can barely support football. I'm expecting some very rough action today, with Squidroidia walking away with a tight win."

"It's probably going to be more tight than the nuts and bolts keeping this stadium together, Duri."

"I love your sense of humor. We'll take a quick commercial break, when we come back, Squidroidia's national gridiron team take to the field. This is World Bowl XXXIX on SBN Sport."

Squidroidia 3-3 (3-9 OT) Martune

Box Score

Regulation

The Jovannic Show Class with defeat of Nagore

The Jovannic American Football Team made its debut in Nagore, winning with plenty of gas to spare as they cruised to a 40-13 victory. We got two touchdowns in 2 minutes, Renegad Saoer bursting past the defence to claim both. It was gentle cruising for the men in Red and Orange, with Nickel Holoway seemingly relaxed and collected. Nagore scored a few punts and touchdowns nearer to the end, but this was just a consolation as The Jovannic got their Debut Victory. "We were just stronger than them, easily. But this will not be the case for the other teams, who are experienced and have played many more games than us, but we can defeat them with just a bit of training and hard work." Head Coach Nickel Holoway said after the match. "We were solid and clinical. This is wanted for our debut, and we got the result too. Next against TJUN-ia, we must give it our all, and we might just come out with a win. Dustyie Barrows, The QB said to interviewers just yesterday.

Like he said, TJUN-ia is our next opponent. Scraping out a good win from a higher ranked team, we must give it our all and vy for every ball to defeat them. After today's result, we think that a win IS possible.
ALL HAIL THE JOVANNIC!!!

THE ROCKET REPORT

OPENER MAY PROVIDE FALSE HOPE

by Brianne Henry,

Going off of Newmanistan’s 41-10 opening day rout of the Lovisa squad on the road, there is reason to believe that the Rockets could have a competent offense for this tournament. They would find the end zone five times, something that does not happen all that much. For this moment, this feels good but then you remember that Marvin Dineen is still the head coach of this team. Furthermore, this is obviously the type of result that Dineen will point to when the team inevitably flames out at some point, in his attempt to keep his job.

Newmanistan watched as the Lovisans marched down the field on their opening drive to a high level of enthusiasm from their faithful. After all, think about it, this was the first time their international team took to the field in a very long time. The return of Lovisa was one of the biggest surprises when the signups took place, if not the biggest surprise. Can the nation get back to being the worthy competitor that they used to be? Eventually, that opening drive stalled in the red zone, something that Rockets fans are very used to seeing from their own team, and Jacek Wszół put his team on the board with a 33-yard field goal. From there, it was all Rockets. Brian Scanlon picked apart the Lovisan defense the first time the sky blue had the ball, connecting with Stephon Sutton in the end zone on a 13-yard pass play. The drive went 76 yards on 11 plays, and was typical of when the team had scored in prior World Bowls. No real highlight reel plays, but it was efficient.

The flow of the game continued well for the Rockets, scoring a second touchdown on the second possession. On this one, we would see the big play as Sutton broke free of the oddly numbered for a defensive back, Wiktor Zięba, and scored on a 66-yard reception. That was mostly all yards after the catch, but was fun to watch and an example of something we want to see from Stephon Sutton. It could not be starting any better for him, three receptions, 98 yards, and touchdowns and we were not even out of the first quarter.

Early in the second, the defense would strike as Lenny Bailey’s sack of Piotr Gołacki forced a fumble, which was recovered by Cole Whitlock. This set the sky blue up with great field position, and eventually, they would score a touchdown again, this time being a 3-yard run from Thomas Browning. With 12:15 remaining in the second quarter, Newmanistan was up 21-3, silencing the Lovisan faithful. The Rockets picked up two Michael Krizman field goals (44 and 48 yards) to finish out the second half, with a sharp looking 27-3 advantage.

Moving to half number two, the Rockets would get the ball first and looked to run down some clock to slowly put the game away. This seemed to stall out around at their own 44, and 41-year old punter Matty Gray was brought out to punt it away. However, on the punt, Jakub Halicki roughed up Gray with a needless hit, and the referee was on with the roughing the kicker penalty, and the automatic first down for Newmanistan. This also got in the minds of some of the players, and there was some pushing and shoving between the two sides at the line of scrimmage, though nothing more came from it. The play did seem to motivate the Rockets to put the ball control behind them, and on the next play, Brian Scanlon took a deep shot down the field for Lucas Jackson, which would connect from 41 yards, making 34-3. Almost immediately, it would become 41-3 when on the ensuing kick off, William Campbell forced a fumble, retrieved it, and scored. From there, the Rockets gave a lot of backups some playing time. Lovisa did get a TD in garbage time to make the final score be 41-10.

For now, be happy. It was a good game, but like I said, Marvin Dineen is still the head coach.

SURGE MASH SPUDS 24-12

by Castiel Mugabe

KYSLO - The St. Kanye Surge national gridiron team start their World Bowl XXXIX campaign on a high note as they win against the Jeckland Spuds at the latter's home arena.

Surge QB Landon Klein finished with a passer rating of 115.85 in the 24-12 win, completing 16 of 23 passes for
248 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. "It's a great win to boost both morale and momentum for the games ahead, and I thank the fans for the immense support they've shown us here", he said, referring to the fact that Kanyeans were able to fill up large sections of the Junction, as the Jeckish lair is known.

The Surge did not immediately take control of the match, though. It was the home team who would go on to a 6-nil lead in the opening quarter with a pair of Crispin Royceston field goals. The score would stay at that for much of the second period, but past the two-minute warning, the Surge would get on the board and take the lead with a Klein completion to tight end Hussein Jeffers (plus the James Rasputin extra point). The 7-6 advantage by the Yeezies would grow to 17-6 after the third quarter, with Rasputin making a field goal and Klein connecting with wideout Patrick Moore. A short run by Spuds running back Jaron Peterson reduced the Surge lead to just five, 17-12, at the start of the fourth quarter. The home team would try to go for two, but the pass by Toby Fishman intended for Huxley Travers was deflected by St. Kanye's Jasper Heath. After a few fruitless sequences, Jeckland would once again get a chance to score and potentially take the lead back. Fishman led his team deep into Kanyean territory, but Gary Bradman intercepted a throw meant for Pearce Baldwin and ran the ball back 83 yards to give us the final tally and cement a Surge victory.

Up next for the Surge (1-0) will be a home game at the Pencurve Electronics Field in Kardashia, St. Kanye. They will be facing the team from Lisander (1-0), who won at Silver Beach (0-1) 29-10. "This will be a revenge match. The boys and I are already eager at the chance to show those Lisanderians how much we've grown as a unit since last season", said Kanyean head coach Jeff Delphine, referencing Lisander's 30-20 win against his squad during the group stages of World Bowl XXXVIII. The Spuds (0-1), on the other hand, will remain at the Junction to face Xanneria (1-0), who crushed Taeshan (0-1) 21-3.

Offense Sputters in Red Zone Despite Victory
Image
Derek McNair, unsurprisingly, put up an impressive stat total in his first outing

Admittedly, Ranoria drew a relatively easy opening game against Damukuni, an unranked team. But a 36-10 victory is still something worth celebrating, with Derek McNair tossing in a pair of touchdown passes. The defense was surprisingly strong, notching two sacks and three tackles for a loss to keep Damukuni's attack at bay.

However, the offense was completely inept in the red zone, going 0 for 6 on touchdowns on red zone trips. McNair's two touchdown passes came from 41 and 33 yards out, respectively, while the team's final touchdown came in garbage time on a 22 yard scamper from Vice Jackson III. Aside from those 21 points, the team was forced to kick field goals six times, all from inside the fifteen yard line. Kicker Trevor Wheeler did manage to nail five of those six attempts, and all of his extra points, but the team left a lot of points on the table.

The first time around, McNair missed a wide open Johnny Farmer on a simple seam route, a staple of the team's offense in the past when Terry Grayson preferred his inside routes. McNair has a tendency to do better on throws outside the numbers, but that's no excuse to miss this pass. He also took a sack on 3rd and 2 at the seven yard line, knocking the team back to the 11. Three more times, the team was stopped on third and short on running plays, and in the fourth quarter McNair hit veteran Ricardo Jackson on a quick slant, with the receiver going down just inches before the first down mark.

The hope is that the team can figure out its red zone woes, and quickly, with Inner AginanaUsordia being a much tougher opponent next week. And, with McNair's generally stellar performances in the red zone (111.7 career passer rating in the red zone), and Vice Jackson III's nose for the end zone as displayed in college (14 rushing TD in the NSCF last season), that shouldn't continue to be a concern after this week. This team is loaded on offense, with plenty of players who score a lot of touchdowns.

The real question is, can this defense keep up such impressive performances in the long term? They allowed only ten points and just over 200 yards in this contest. While that itself is unsustainable, if they can keep the opposition under twenty, well, then McNair and crew will do the rest.

OOC: Anything written in quotation marks and bolded is from Saint Kanye's RP, with the following non bolded text in quotation marks from an online generator.

Technology has come a long way in recent years. Artificial Intelligence has taken over many tasks which humans used to do. But can it write like a human? Can it tell a story? Let's test that out...

I'm Ibbie Pemberton, and I'm a journalist. Except from today, I'm not the one doing the writing. In front of me I have a match report from The Kardashia Kibitzer on Saint Kanye's 24-12 win over Jeckland in the recent game at the World Bowl. But what would happen if the jouranlist had got bored, only written a few lines, and had an AI do the rest? It's the question absolutely nobody has been asking... and I'm here to answer it.

Let's start it off simple, by feeding in the first line of the match report and seeing what happens.

"KYSLO - The St. Kanye Surge national gridiron team start their World Bowl XXXIX campaign on a high note as they win against the Jeckland Spuds at the latter's home arena.

KANYE: 'I Know It's Over' - Kanye West performs a new single from his forthcoming album. Watch.

G-Eazy - G-Eazy - I Know It's Over - The St. Kanye Surge national anthem is sung by Yeezy. Watch.

St. Kanye - St. Kanye - I Know It's Over - The St. Kanye Surge national anthem is sung by Yeezy. Watch."

This has not worked at all, and in fact highly concerns me. It first appears to tell us that somebody called Kanye West is performing a new single, possibly called 'I Know It's Over', from a forthcoming album. The ominous, single sentence 'Watch.' at the end is either the name of the album, or an instruction that you should watch the performance, it's really not clear. Either way, this has nothing to do with gridiron. The only similarity to the input is the word Kanye.

The next line makes much less sense. Opening with G-Eazy twice, separated by dashes, it then repeats the phrase 'I Know It's Over'. That's nothing to do with what we put in. Is the computer trying to tell us something? Is the mutliverse doomed to an eternal fire that kills us all? Oh wait! The next part kind of makes sense. The country St Kanye is now apparently renamed after its football team, with the national anthem sung by 'Yeezy'. 'Watch.' ends the line again, becoming much more ominous the second time around. After the third line came out nearly the exact same, with G-Eazy replaced by St. Kanye, the computer appeared to be stuck in a loop of repeating the same words over and over again, always with the watch at the end. After nervously looking around me to check I was not the one being watched, I decided to feed in a more statistical line to see if it would make sense. Computers are made of numbers, right?

"Surge QB Landon Klein finished with a passer rating of 115.85 in the 24-12 win, completing 16 of 23 passes for
248 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception.
The win moved the Broncos to 6-2 on the season, and the team improved to 4-0 against teams currently under .500. The Broncos are currently ranked ninth nationally by ESPN, and ninth in the country in the Conference USA.com preseason poll, with five of their wins come on the road."

This is more like it! Sure, it's not talking about what I put in at all, but at least it knows we're on about gridiron... I think. We now have some information on a seemingly fictional team called the Broncos, who are on a 6-2 record with five wins coming away and four wins against weaker teams. This seems an impressive record for a team ranked ninth by both 'ESPN' and 'Conference USA.com''s poll, but we don't know how many teams ninth is out of. Still, seems like they're doing well. Good on you, Broncos! Now, let's try and insert the part of the report where Jeckland takes the lead, because let's face it, we'd all like to relive it.

"The Surge did not immediately take control of the match, though. It was the home team who would go on to a 6-nil lead in the opening quarter with a pair of Crispin Royceston field goals. The teams will be met at the home of the Melbourne Victory in a rematch of the 2013 Melbourne Victory-St Kilda match.

In a dramatic win for Western Sydney Wanderers, midfielder Sam Reid made the winning penalty in the second half to force overtime and send the match into extra time."

Okay, this is close enough to cohesive to be intriguing, but not close enough to come anywhere near making sense. It appears that there is some match going on between Melbourne Victory and St Kilda, but then it switches to reporting on Western Sydney Wanderers winning. Of course, I have no idea who any of these teams are and what they are playing, and the next line makes that much less clear. I cannot for the life of me think of a sport where a winning penalty does not win the game, but instead forces the match into both overtime and extra time. Both of these are different words for the same thing, and usually occur where a draw happens. I want to learn more about this sport. Let's continue...

"Ferraro's goal also put Victory over the top to win the clash.

The Victory had the ball in their own net for the first 20 minutes of the second half. Then, Wanderers goalkeeper Michael Nalder made a good stop to deny Victor striker Josh Smith in the box, but Ferraro scored a second.

The goal was the winning goal for Wanderers and they went onto win it on penalties."

Victory now appear to have won, with a goal from Ferraro. This despite having the ball (this sport has a ball) in their own net (also a net) for a whopping 20 minutes of the second half. Now in most sports I know, that is what is known as a bad play, but it seems to have worked out for them. But wait, Ferraro's second goal was the winning goal for Wanderers! But wait! They won on penalties!

This is all too much. I need to list the rules of this sport to see if I can understand it.

- Matches have two halves.
- Matches use a ball and a net, and teams have midfielders and goalkeepers. There is a box somewhere.
- You can keep the ball in your own net for a long time, and this appears to be a good idea.
- Both teams appear able to win the same game at once, with three teams possibly playing (remember St Kilda?)
- Winning goals can send the game into overtime, extra time and/or penalties. These are not mutually exclusive.

Now I don't know about you, but if this sport doesn't exist (which I'm sure it doesn't) someone should invent it. Whilst the AI may have completely failed at what it was supposed to do, it taught us about the many artists who sing the Saint Kanye national anthem, the successes of the gridiron team the Broncos, and a new, as yet unnamed sport. Thanks for reading, and don't forget...

Watch.

And welcome to another edition of the Sports With Bort blog, I'm your always humble host Bort Stevens. We're continuing our special report on Torisakia's World Bowl 39 campaign that we earlier in the week. We're going to look at Torisakia's match against Sarzonia, which kicked off World Bowl 39 last night.

Looks like I was concerned for no reason. Torisakia picked up right where they left off in World Bowl 37 despite a lengthy absence. Under the lights at Tokai Memorial, the Ice Birds cruised to a 30-20 victory over unranked Sarzonia. The score looks close, but Torisakia was in control for the mostly the entire game. It was an offensive showcase for the Ice Birds as Aaron Spady went 18/24 for 313 yards and 3 touchdowns and Michael Prickett had 24 carries for 146 yards. The defense had their moments. Some times they looked dominant and other times they looked lost. Thankfully they had enough awareness to hold Sarzonia to only 217 yards of total offense and didn't really start to bend until the second half, but by that time Torisakia had a good amount of control on the game. Matthew DeBerry was money like always, hitting 4 extra points.

Box Score1Q2Q3Q4QFinal
Torisakia (1-0)1477230
Sarzonia (0-1)3314020

Sarzonia got the ball to start the game, but unfortunately for them their drive resulted in points scored for the opposition. On 3rd down, Stars QB Joe Locklear was hit by Elijah Rose as he was throwing the ball and it was subsequently intercepted by Kyeon Wilkerson, who returned it 34 yards for the score. After a three and out by Sarzonia, Torisakia got the ball for their first offensive possession. The Ice Birds would go 75 yards on 10 plays that culminated in a 27 yard pass from Aaron Spady to Theo Shepherd to go up 14-0 early on. Sarzonia responded with a decent drive of their own, but ended up having to kick a 43 yard field goal to get on the board. This gave their defense some momentum though, as they forced Torisakia to punt on their next few possessions. Although the Stars offense stalled a bit as they ended up having to punt as well. It wasn't until late in the second quarter when Sarzonia struck again, this time on a 29 yard field goal with 3:18 remaining before the half. Their drive had some promise, going 81 yards in 12 plays, but the Ice Birds' defense stood tall in the face of adversity. Torisakia responded with a well executed drive that resulted in a 22 yard pass from Spady to Jay Abaroa to go up 21-6 at halftime. Sarzonia seemed to have made a lot of adjustments during halftime, as the they dominated most of the 3rd quarter. Things started out well though for the Ice Birds as Spady perfectly read a zone blitz and dumped a pass off to Michael Prickett who ran 72 yards for the touchdown to increase their lead. Sarzonia stormed back however, as on the ensuing possession Locklear threw a bomb to Matt Largent for a touchdown and successfully converted a two-point conversion to cut the lead to 14. Trickeration followed on the kickoff as the Stars opted for a surprise onside kick, which they recovered, to get the ball back at the Ice Birds 48 yard line. A well executed drive followed and Locklear dove over the top at the 1 yard line to bring Sarzonia to within 8 points because they made a silly mistake and botched the snap on the PAT. The Torisakia defense would eventually buckle down and the offense would work on just not turning the ball over and it resulted in no scoring in the 4th quarter, except for a safety scored by the Ice Birds when they tackled Stars RB Ty'Relle Clinton in the endzone with 6:19 remaining to all but clinch the 30-20 victory.

Torisakia's next match is against Northwest Kalactin, who was shutout by The Greater Nordics yesterday 22-0. Northwest Kalactin used to be a pretty decent team from what I've been told, but some undisclosed issues have caused them to fall in international status. They can't be overlooked however, as knowing Torisakia we make even the worst opponents look like the Jerryville Dynasty of the 70s and 80s. The Northwest Kalactin game will be played at the Vinewood Bowl in Douglas-La Pryor, where I recently camped out while undergoing one of my riveting endeavors. Pretty nice city, even though I've been there many times before. Did you know they passed an ordinance where if you're drinking a beer and plan to have sexual relationships with someone, you have to finish the beer first? Pretty crazy stuff. I thought that making it illegal to shoot peas out of your nose through a straw all because some snotty 4th grader did it in the cafeteria at an elementary school that the president was just so happening to visit and the pea hit him and the Secret Service thought he got shot was ridiculous.

Welp, that's all I have for today. I'll be back with another edition of Sports with Bort soon to discuss the Torisakia-Northwest Kalactin matchup as well as take a look at other happenings around the tournament in other groups and preview the next matchday. Take care and which would you all rather have: a gay son or a spinning gorilla? Personally I would rather have the gorilla. Nothing wrong with having a gay son, but he's nothing compared to a gorilla that can freakin' spin!

As much as Sarzonia national gridball coach Tim Gates preached the principle of one match at a time and as much as he tried to focus his efforts on Torisakia, the talk about Sarzonia hosting the top ranked team in the world at Joe Gibbs Stadium was overwhelming.

Even so, it didn't play as much of a role in Sarzonia's 30-20 defeat to Torisakia as did his own team's struggles to establish a viable passing game. The Stars got off to a terrible start on the first offensive series of the match after Ty'Relle Clinton was hit in the backfield on first down. He managed to wiggle free for a two-yard gain, but quarterback Joe Locklear audibles out of the second play in Gates's script, changing to a wide receiver screen.

Unfortunately for Locklear, linebacker Elijah Rose hit him as he threw and his pass for Clinton fluttered into the waiting hands of fellow outside linebacker Kyeon Wilkerson. He took the turnover to the house and the crowd at Tokai Memorial Stadium was in an early frenzy.

"What did you see?" Gates asked Locklear as the Stars signal caller trudged his way to the sideline. "Were they showing you a different look?" Gates expected his quarterback to tell him that he saw strong safety Rodney McFarlane creeping into the box to form an eight-man front. However, Locklear didn't mention that.

"I felt we needed to push the ball downfield or face a third and long," Locklear said. Gates rolled his eyes. "I'll call the plays, Joe," he said. "You run what I call. Capisce?"

Locklear glared back. He desperately wanted to tell Gates "If you didn't call chicken shit plays,I wouldn't have to fucking audible," but he instead stormed to the bench and slammed his helmet in frustration. He didn't see quarterbacks coach Gavin Davis walk up to Gates with a tablet computer showing the Ice Birds lining up in the eight-man front.

"That's what I hoped Joe would have pointed out," Gates said. Davis relayed the explanation to Locklear just before he had to jog onto the pitch with a new helmet. This helmet didn't have the microphone in it, so after the Stars went three and out, they equipment personnel had to hurriedly install it. During the first offensive series for the Ice Birds, they accomplished their task. However, Torisakia drove 75 yards in 10 plays and extended their lead to 14-0.

For the next offensive series, Clinton finally got a chance to show his stuff, running eight times for 47 yards and a key conversion on third and one from the Ice Birds 46. It culminated in a 43-yard field goal from Adam Novak, and the Stars were finally on the scoreboard. The drive gave the Stars defensive momentum and they held after two Ice Birds first downs, forcing a punt that pinned Sarzonia on its own 8.

Sarzonia drove 81 yards in 12 plays before the drive stalled at the 11. Novak hit from 29, and the Stars had a smidge of hope with 3:18 left before the half. However, a well executed drive by Ice Birds quarterback Aaron Spady resulted in his second touchdown pass of the half as he hit wide receiver Jay Abaroa with a 22-yard scoring strike.

With the Ice Birds getting the second half kickoff, defensive coordinator Kyle Hanley decided to opt for zone coverage, although he opted for a safety blitz on third and six from the Ice Dogs 28-yard line. Spady saw it, then checked down to running back Michael Prickett, who juked his way to a backbreaking touchdown.

Gates shook his head in frustration, knowing that he had to abandon the running game and adopt more of the downfield passing that wasn't his forte. Fortunately, it was Locklear's. He hit Matt Largent as Gates made another adjustment by rolling Locklear out. Largent scored a 67-yard touchdown on the play, then fellow wideout Steve Swain cradled the two-point conversion and Sarzonia were down two scores.

Gates saw special teams coordinator Dylan Massey give him a flirtatious look and he winked back. Anyone who didn't know better might have been confused, but that was the signal the two coaches agreed upon. Novak kicked the onside kick to perfection and the Stars had three ball at the Ice Birds 48. Locklear then hit Swain on third and nine with a 20-yard pass to preserve the drive, then hit tight end Al Langston with a 19-yard pass to set up first and goal at the one. Locklear then sneaked in on the next play and the Stars were an extra point away from only being down seven. However, punter Chaz Hunter mishandled a low snap and fell on the ball to prevent a disaster.

After the Stars held Torisakia after three first downs, punter Joseph Walck pinned the Stars on their own two. Gates decided to call for a handoff to Clinton with the running game back in play. However, the defensive line surged off the ball and Clinton was tackled for a safety that would be the final score of the match.

Now Gates knew his team was staring at 0-2 with a team and a country that didn't exactly like Sarzonia or Sarzonians. And he was going to reckon with questions he wished he didn't have to answer.

History of New England and National Information:

In 1789, representatives of the American states met to draft a new constitution, but talks broke down due to irreconcilable differences on the issue of slavery, and the states of Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island declared themselves independent from the United States. They formed a new union called the Commonwealth of New England, which also included Vermont. In 1933, Newfoundland was peacefully annexed and became the 6th state of the Commonwealth.

New England was a bastion of freedom in a world plagued by slavery, and it was a formiddable naval power, but America's hostility and Europe's dependence on American grain exports put the Commonwealth in a precarious position politically and economically. This was exacerbated by the rise of fascism in the 20th century.

By the 1970s, New England was suffering severe food shortages due to trade embargoes and overpopulation, and many people emigrated to Canada or America.

This state of affairs continued until 1988, when a team of researchers at MIT made a discovery that would completely upend the balance of power: they discovered a way to travel between parallel worlds. In other worlds, they found technologies that were unheard of in their own timeline. New England became the world's only nuclear power in a world where the concept of nuclear fission had never been conceived. The great slaveholding powers laughed when New England demanded that they free their slaves or face annihilation. A week later, with Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Baltimore reduced to smoldering craters, the United States surrendered and countries across Europe emancipated their slaves to avoid war.

It did not take long for Yankee leaders to realize that their new technology opened up more possibilities than just the opportunity to steal nuclear warheads from other worlds. They began reaching out to their counterparts in other versions of New England, attempting to unite all the Yankee people as a single nation spanning multiple worlds. In worlds that were technologically backward, they shared their knowledge to improve the people's lives and encourage them to join the Commonwealth. In worlds that were more technologically advanced, they learned everything they could and brought the new technologies home to their own world for study.

But there was one technology they were careful never to share: the ability to open portals between worlds. That was a closely-guarded secret because they knew it would be disastrous if it fell into the hands of a rival power like the Americans or the Germans.

In worlds where New England was not inhabited by English-speaking white people, they left the locals to govern themselves. Although what it means to be a Yankee can vary greatly from one world to the next, they understood that French people and Indians were separate peoples with separate histories. Where the French and Indians were friendly, trade was established, but their land was not annexed and their people were not allowed citizenship. In worlds where New England was inhabited by English-speaking white people -- regardless of whether they called themselves Yankee, American, Canadian, or British, and regardless of whether they had minority populations of other ethnic groups living in their midst -- emissaries attempted to persuade the people to join the Transmondian Commonwealth.

They never attempted to annex anything outside the traditional borders of New England. In worlds where North America had no human population, they would plunder it for natural resources, with no regard for borders -- but where there was a human population, they wanted only the alternate versions of their own country. In worlds where New England was an independent country with different borders, or where it controlled colonies, they respected the local borders and they kept the colonies. In some worlds, they found themselves governing Namibia, Australia, or the moon. In worlds where New England belonged to the United States, Canada, or some European power, they attempted to persuade the people to secede from the local government and join the Commonwealth instead.

Within a few decades, the Commonwealth expanded across dozens of worlds and established trade with hundreds more. The population ballooned from 30 million to several billion, and technology advanced at a breakneck pace that was difficult to comprehend. The Home States became a hub for trade between worlds, and the infrastructure struggled to keep up with all the people coming and going, leading to atrocious traffic congestion and overcrowded cities.

The government became unwieldy as the nation grew far faster than the bureaucratic systems were designed to handle. Juggling diplomatic relations across hundreds of worlds was an overwhelming challenge. But even as people were reeling from all the rapid changes, most people were better off. Anyone that wanted to make a new life for themselves could go to one of the uninhabited worlds and help plunder them for natural resources.

The worlds are named according to what the first Yankee visitors found notable about them. For example, the Australian Countries are a world where New England colonized Australia. The Obama Countries are a world where Barack Obama was president of the United States when the first emissaries arrived. The Dark Countries had no electric power when they were first discovered.

Delivering mail, managing trademarks, and discussing geography can be a challenge, as many names are repeated across different worlds. There are hundreds of versions of Boston, Portland, Providence, etc. and each version of Boston may have a street called Beacon Street or Commonwealth Avenue. Sports teams, colleges, and companies often have the same names from one world to the next. To clear up confusion, the name of the world is specified: The Patriots of the Home States, the Red Sox of the English Countries, the University of Vermont in Rainbow Burlington. This also applies to the names of politicians, athletes, authors, or entertainers who may be famous in multiple worlds -- though people from the Home Countries do not use a world name. The president of the Commonwealth, who is from the Home Countries, is Darren Rollins. The governor of Newfoundland in the Neon Countries is Darren Rollins Neon.

Because most worlds have their own international sporting events, the Commonwealth often fields several "national" teams in the same sport. Some recruit only from their own world; others recruit from across multiple worlds. It's very common for talented athletes from less developed worlds where there are not many international competitions to travel to more developed worlds where they have better career opportunities. The football team which represented New England in World Bowl 36 was recruited from a group of less developed worlds -- the Dark States, the Liberated Reich (a.k.a. Hitler States), the Wilderness, the Marxist States, the Noble States, the Rubble, the Coal States, the Slave States, the Roche States, the Rickshaw States, and the Puritan States -- with coaching staff, logistics, and equipment provided by sponsors from more developed parts of the Commonwealth. The World Bowl program was designed to be a chance for players from less developed worlds to broaden their horizons and experience a more modern way of life, not to mention bringing home some money for their families.

The team did well in World Bowl XXXVI and XXXVII. XXXVIII was not as successful, but the World Bowl remains popular in the Rubble States and the Liberated Reich, where it is covered by local TV stations. As the economic situation has improved in the Rubble States and the Liberated Reich, local sponsors in those worlds are now able to play a larger role in managing the team. They have taken the initiative to keep it going and return for World Bowl XXXIX, but they have the same players as last year because they were busy getting things up and running at their new headquarters and they didn't have time to recruit and develop new players.

The new management are not necessarily the most organized, especially people from the Rubble States. People from the Liberated Reich are very patriotic and proud of New England's democratic values. People from the Rubble States are very friendly and family-oriented. But these are not the first two worlds you want to visit if you are looking for slick efficient management.

NSFB: Field of Dreams? Certainly!

Postby TJUN-ia » Tue Jun 30, 2020 11:20 am

It was going to be a big night no matter the final score as the Field of Dreams, New Washington, the NAU Zone and TJUN-ia itself hosted a gridiron football game for the very first time. 87,000 people crammed into The Gardens to watch their Jaguars take on the 2nd pot, 11th-ranked Dagans of Cassadiagua. Gus McKerrin, in his first game as official Head Coach, had it all to do and knew this game wouldn't be easy at all. Megan Schuster's side are two-time champs with them known for shutting down airplay very easily. He knew that this game had to be played on the ground, but he didn't know if his team could effectively do that for 90 minutes.

The first quarter saw the Dagans score first, with Taylor Crimmins throwing to Alexa Schultz for 15 yards. Kiersten Baker kicked the extra point, 7-0 Dagans. Both defences held up to keep the score that way at the end of the quarter. The 2nd quarter saw an improved run game from the Jags and they took advantage to score their first touchdown at The Garden, QB1 Jake Griffin running it in himself for 5 yards. The extra point was converted by Chi On-Ma and the game was tied 7-7. Both defences held firm again after that and so it was 7-7 as we entered the half. TJUN-ia certainly played up to the Dagans, but it felt like they were close to breaking the Jags down enough to win this game.

And it certainly felt like that in the 3rd as, on 1st and 10 from their own 20, Taylor Crimmins found a wide-open Brooke Talley. She only had to beat Drew McAllister as she found her way to the endzone for an 80-yard TD. Kiersten Baker kicked her 2nd extra point, 14-7 Dagans. The TJUN-ian defence held on to keep the Dagan score at 14 but the offence couldn't so much either. It certainly looked bleak for the Jaguars as we entered the 4th.

But Gus knew this game was far from over. He rallied his men and TJUN-ia want on the attack. The Dagan defence held until 6 minutes remained when Griffin gave the ball Wilson Hibbert. He managed to find his way around multiple players to score a 23 yard TD. Chi kicked the extra point and the game was tied yet again. Both sides tried to get the victory but with only 4 seconds on the clock, Cassadiagua would attempt a 39-yard field goal to walk off the game on the road. Kiersten Baker went for it, but it was blocked by backup player Sven Gudjonsson. The ball was picked up by Jester Carter, who was chosen by Special Teams Coach David Stroman as simply extra pressure as a sort of H-back. Jester manoeuvred his way around multiple defenders and TJUN-ian blockers before he avoided the tackle by Baker herself to score a walk-off TD that sent the nation into jubilation. The team ran onto the field, the crowd was storming it too and the chaos many had hoped for had actually happened in game 1. Here's JBBST's reaction to the play:

Okay, here we go. Cassie has an opportunity to break the hearts of TJUN-ian kind right here. Kiersten Baker from 39-yards out, and...BLOCKED! It's blocked by Gudjonssen, I think. It's Jester Carter with the ball at the 40, past the 30! 20! One person to beat, and HE WILL SCORE! TOUCHDOWN! TOUCHDOWN! TJUN-IA WINS IT AT THE DEATH!
.
.
.
JESTER CARTER, YOU BEAUTY! THE CROWD IS STORMING THE FIELD OF DREAMS, AND THE DREAMS WILL CERTAINLY BE SWEET TONIGHT! OH MY GOODNESS!

TJUN-ia go 1-0 after the "Block 6 in The Gardens". The team will celebrate tonight before they must travel to Buile to take on The Jovannic, bit no one will forget what happened on this night in New Washington. TJUN-ian Gridiron is certainly back. GO JAGS!

Defense performs well in a surprisingly close loss

Image
OOC: Yes I'm an eagles fan, should be apparent by my discord profile. FLY EAGLES FLY!!!

A 16-13 loss to the best team in the world is nothing to shake your head at. Especially when it is your first game as a team and your unranked. The Free Republics defense completely shut us down, and Watford's statline of 17-37 241 yards, 1 td, 3 int is not very pretty. We knew it was going to be an offensive struggle but we were supposed to be an offensive team. Our defense was not supposed to shut down the speed of Dania Sandberg, and our secondary was supposed to get burnt by the speed at receiver. Chicken King Stadium was energized for the game, and Watford said after the match "If I had played better, we would have won simple as that."

I don't want to be pessimistic, as I was predicting a 30 point loss so let's look at the positives mainly the defense. Mooreville knew Sandberg was going to want to run it early and often. Our run defense anchored by Espinosa, and Firth really made Free Republics work for the win.

Let's start in the first quarter. Free Republics won the coin toss, and deferred so we got the ball to start out. Watford was intimidated we could all see it. Instead of trying to send his cannon arm deep to Bradson he would opt for a 7 yard curl route to Maggie Brown that he put into the ground. On second down Ganix Lerma got quick pressure and sacked him. On third down we failed to pick up the blitz, and Watford had to run for his life and chuck it out of bounds. That's how the game started, with an extremely quick three and out.

Our defense wasn't intimidated like the offense. Mooreville came out dialing blitzes, and exotic schemes that seemed to throw Free Republics off. Despite this they were able to pick up two first downs and make it to midfield. Fortunately, a sack on third and nine from Espinosa forced them out of field goal range.

The offense went the entire first quarter without picking up a first down. At the end of it Watford was 1-8 passing for 3 yards, Butler was averaging less than a yard per carry, and the defense had only given up a 52 yard field goal to make it 3-0 Free Republics. Sparks decided to get aggressive to start the second quarter. He dialed up a flee flicker during which Bradson sprinted deep. The free safety Nakashima, fell for it and Bradson was wide open down the sideline. Unfortunately Watford's throw was under thrown and while Bradson caught it by then Nakashima, and the corner could catch up and knocked him out of bounds. Still it was a 47 yard throw that boosted Watford's confidence. Four plays later, Billy James scored to give Kohnhead the 6-3 lead. The PAT made it 7-3.

The score stayed that way until right before the end of the second half when Wanda Parkinson made a 42 yard field goal as time expired to give us the touchdown lead 10-3. The defense led by Espinosa who had 1.5 sacks were playing lights out. Melanie Wilks, had an interception as she had come on for a total of five plays and got one. We limited the high powered rushing attack to just 59 yards in the first half, and Sandberg had 102 passing. Despite this we knew that at some point they would wake up, and our defense would get tired.

On the first drive of the second half we knew something had changed. No longer were Free Republics fooled by Mooreville's fake blitzes, and exotic coverages. Mooreville tried to adjust with Free Republics but their offense was always a step ahead of our defense. Sandberg would keep it herself on a triple option and score Free Republic's first td of the World Bowl.

Watford and the offense started to sputter, as the O-Line continued to struggle against the constant pressure, and Watford had to throw many passes out of bounds. Kenneth Bradson also had to exit the game in the second half, which is probably part of the problem, but he will most likely be okay for the next game. Unfortunately Ariel Knox will not be okay after suffering a knee injury late in the third quarter. She will be done for the tournament.

Free Republics marched down the field again at the start of the fourth quarter with Sandberg throwing it to Jonas Hetland who made a defender miss and walked in to the end zone. Free Republics missed the PAT though so it was a 16-10 game.

With 9:19 remaining on the clock, a massive pass interference call went against Free Republics with Hanna Ostrowska having grabbed Marco Polisson's shirt as he went up for it. This gave The Brains a first and goal but two straight incompletions and a six yard run to the two brought up fourth and goal. Watford wanted to go for it, but Sparks decided to send out the field goal unit. We would never get close to scoring again and 16-13 is how it ended. The analytics told Sparks to go for it, Berger told him to go for it, and after the game Sparks admitted he made a bad decision.

"Hindsight is key, I didn't know we wouldn't be able to score again. I should have trusted Jackson, he's our guy. The analytics told me to go one way, my gut went the other way, in the future you bet I'd go for it. We aren't going to win by being conservative."

Our next game is on the road against The Greater Nordics who are coming off of a 22-0 shutout of Northwest Kalactin. If luck is on our side we could pull off the upset, we certainly showed that we can compete in this game. Here are the standings:
Group G Pld W L PF PA PD

Live Blog: Delaclava 23-14 Royal Kingdom of Quebec

Good afternoon, gridiron fans - behind the live blog here are Ken Clayton, Alissa Marchetti, and Carlos Lima. While we encourage you to tune into the game on the DSGN main channel or on radio, we know that plenty of you are on the go, so we hope to provide you with some description of what's happening as you follow the scores, drop the kids off at practice, pay half attention in that meeting, pay half attention on that road - no, please keep your eyes on the road. Anyway, we've got you covered.

Pregame: It's perfect football weather in Quinniville today, and the fans are taking full advantage. There were questions about the initial level of enthusiasm from the home faithful. No need to worry - 70,000 seat Sullivan Stadium is standing room only today. The Quebecois are not so far away, but this crowd is mostly pro-Phoenixes. They're loud, cheerful, and ready to see some good action.

There's a lot at stake for these young men. Typically, there's no expectations for a group of 20-somethings entering their first international tournament. But these young men happen to come from a nation that was once regarded as a gridiron dynasty. Even if the sporting infrastructure has been lacking over the previous decades, the heritage is there. The Phoenixes have been welcomed back to the tournament with open arms - if that wasn't obvious enough from awarding hosting rights to Delaclava - as well as predictions on how closely this team can reach to their former glory. For now, though, today is just a game - one this team must go out and win.

Coin Toss: The Delaclav captains - quarterback Brian Mathis, right tackle Colton Voigt, linebacker Seth Ružička, and safety Obdulo Farukhan - meet the referees and the Quebecois captain at midfield. Both teams prominently wear red and yellow - or rather, gold for the Phoenixes - but the Quebecois blue provides a sharp contrast. It's all polite at the center, but the Delaclav captains are lasered in. Mathis is jumping up and down, ready to go. Ružička looks pumped, ripped, and ready to roll. The Quebecois team is younger - a collegiate all-star team - but they'll still have the upper hand on experience and will be quite skilled nonetheless.

The Quebecois win the coin toss and elect to receive in the second half. So we're going to start off with a look at the Delaclav offense. It'll be largely centered along DGL MVP running back Dexter George of the Coleport Jazz, but Mathis is an effective field general with a stacked receiving corps to look towards. Let's see what happens.

Delaclava* 0-0 Quebec, 15:00 1st (start of drive): Hong Seung-Yoon kicks it through the end zone, so the Phoenixes will set up shop at the 20 yard line. In the blink of an eye, the Phoenixes are past midfield, and it's all Dexter George - three outside runs and one screen pass. The last and prettiest play showcases Mathis' foot speed, rolling out to the right and getting several yards himself before pitching to George, who takes it to the Quebecois 41, with a tackle from Park Mi-Ae potentially saving a touchdown. From there, the Quebecois defense somewhat wises up to the Delaclav strategy. George can only get five more yards on the next two plays, but Mathis finds tight end Matthew Plank on a comeback route and the drive continues. That's the last first down of the drive, but the Phoenixes do make it to the 25-yard-line, well within the range of Kieran Conley. The Corcorran Hammers kicker gets his first test of the day and aces it - the 42-yard-field goal is straight through the uprights. It didn't end as well as it started, but most importantly, the Phoenixes are on the board.

Delaclava 3-0 Quebec*, 9:47 1st: Conley doesn't quite get the meat of the ball on the kickoff, and Clark Pavao Ackersley brings the ball out to the 32 yard line before being brought down. Team Quebec has a reputation for a high-powered offense, so the Phoenixes defense is also going to get an early test. They pass with flying colors. First, Dawan Lewis comes through and stuffs a run up the middle, then breaks up a screen pass. Third down, and Royce Schreiber gets around the outside to bring down Joseph Nam, who can't find his receiver in time. The Quebecois have to punt from the 28. Iliana Rasmussen Corrado gets all of it, and Frankie Wallace has to run back to track it down. He has no play on it and it bounces out around the 17 yard line. Still 3-0 for the home team.

Delaclava* 3-0 Quebec, 8:06 1st: The Phoenixes might have felt a bit too good about their early success. They pick up a couple of first downs as wideouts Roddy Carter and Kevin Alés are brought into the action with some nice short passes. But on first down from their own 45, they draw up a short passing play and send Carter downfield to clear him out. Mathis thinks he has him and airs it out. It's a bit lofty and Park had him better covered than Mathis anticipated. It's a jump ball and it's Park's. Coach Gorka Bielsa is a pretty calm sideline presence, but he makes it clear that he's not happy with the decision. Quebecois get it back at their 8 yard line.

Delaclava 3-0 Quebec*, 5:23 1st: Now the Atlantian Oceanian rivals are starting to fire a little bit. Benedict Maheux-Hwang begins to take over, clicking off runs of five, six, seven yards. The Delaclav defense is scrambling. Anticipating a play action, Jaxx Underwood pinches in a bit from the side to potentially rush. Nam makes him pay with a nice sideline pass to Tristan Berthelette-Nadon. It's a bit lofty and Farukhan is able to get over and bring Berthelette-Nadon down at the 23 yard line. On the next play, Kim Joon-Cheol challenges Tasunka Coleman with a corner route and Nam tries it. The 6-foot-1 Coleman uses all of his size and strength to get the position and bring the ball down. The defense celebrates, but a flag is on the field for pass interference. Coleman complains to no avail. Replay shows... not a bad call, but some refs are going to let that go. This one doesn't, and two plays later, Maheux-Hwang explodes up the middle for the score. Hong converts and the away team has taken the 7-3 lead.

Delaclava* 3-7 Quebec, 0:14 1st: Hong's kickoff comes to around the goal line and Javon Reid has to bring it out. He makes the most of it, plunging with speed up the middle and managing to make it to the 28. Mathis has learned his lesson from the previous drives, finding Plank and Morgan Ellison on a variety of slant and drag routes. The Phoenixes are marching steadily down the field until Mathis takes his shot again - this time with Mateus Eldridge against Anna Lambert-LeBlois. Eldridge got the jump on his marker and the pass from Mathis is nearly perfect - just pinned a bit too close to the sideline, and Eldridge stays in for the catch, but can't run it home. Instead, the Phoenixes are set up at the 6 yard line. Unfortunately, they stall again. George and fullback Rick Groves can't punch through a stacked defensive line, and it's Kieran Conley on the field again after the Phoenixes lose a yard in three plays. Conley drills the 24-yarder with ease. Delaclava now trails by one, but need to figure out how they're going to close out drives.

Delaclava 6-7 Quebec*, 9:56 2nd: Conley bangs the kickoff through the uprights - which, of course, doesn't count for anything this time. The Quebecois start at the 20, with plenty of field to work with, but get nowhere. Farukhan makes a particularly nice read to shut down a potential drive-extending catch by Kim Joon-Cheol. Rasmussen gets a nice punt off, which Frankie Wallace is able to track down and bring out to the 34.

Delaclava* 6-7 Quebec, 8:21 2nd: The Phoenixes go back to their option runs for a brief moment, and two combinations from Mathis to George yield 17 yards for a first down and positioning just past midfield. Mathis takes another downfield shot to Roddy Carter on first down, but Park is again up to the task and knocks it down. A run to the left by George yields just two yards before Milan Peric makes a dive to bring him down by the shoestrings. It's time to pass on third down, but Mathis can't find anyone. The secondary locks it down and Mathis gets flushed out by Peric, eventually stepping out at the 45 and avoids the sack. Conley is looking antsy, perhaps hoping to get a shot at the 62-yarder. Bielsa and OC Jeff Sweeney veto that idea, and Oliver Kurzmann is out for the first time of the day. He pins the Quebecois offense beautifully with a punt to the right corner that bounces out at the 3.

Delaclava 6-7* Quebec, 5:13 2nd: With the end zone just behind them, Nam plays it safe and hands off to Maheux-Hwang, who gets five yards on two rushes. The Phoenixes have timeouts but Bielsa seems to think he'll have enough time anyway. Nam then finds Connor Ankou-Ndembele for a short slant route. Ankou-Ndembele catches it and promptly gets his clock cleaned by Ružička. It's 4th and 1, but the field position is too risky for Baek Sang-Joon's taste, and Rasmussen is out to punt again. Rasmussen gets hold of another nice kick, which Wallace then brings to the Quebecois 43.

Delaclava* 6-7 Quebec, 3:50 2nd: The offense goes slow and methodical, making it clear that they're taking the last shot of the half. The Quebecois use their remaining timeouts to try to salvage something for a last gasp, but Dexter George keeps tearing forward with short to medium runs. They keep the clock and the chains moving. With under a minute to go and now at the 19 yard line, Mathis wants to try Roddy Carter one more time on a post route. Not wanting to give the ball away, he errs on the side of overthrowing and Carter doesn't have a play. The Phoenixes use two more runs from George to set up the field position, and Conley comes out for the 32-yard field goal. He calmly gives the home team the 9-7 lead as time expires.

Halftime, Delaclava 9-7 Quebec: Well, so far, so good, all things considered. This Phoenixes team has a lot of weapons, can move the ball well on the ground, and Mathis is starting to find his range in the air. The defense was caught off guard to an extent for the Quebecois squad, but largely has been in control. Delaclava has left opportunities - and points - untaken, but they hold the lead for now. It's all going to be in the halftime adjustments.

Delaclava 9-7 Quebec*, 15:00 3rd: Quebec now receives in the second half. Conley kicks it into the endzone, and Pavao chooses to bring it out, coming down at the 22. The Quebecois have the early edge in this half, with Maheux-Hwang finding a few holes. His first two rushes yield a first down, and his next two bring up 3rd and 1. Kim Joon Cheol runs a slant across the middle and gets the first down from Nam. Somehow, he got a step on Tasunka Coleman, Wendell May also misses a tackle, and in the blink of an eye, Kim is gone. DC Andy Lindsay is furious as Kim jogs it home for six. Hong's extra point is good and the Quebecois again lead, 14-9.

Delaclava* 9-14 Quebec, 12:24 3rd: Hong forces the touchback and the Phoenixes will start at the 20. Mathis makes his intentions clear - he is going to get that touchdown back, and he is going to find Roddy Carter long. On first down, Carter shows short screen before turning into a fly route. He finally has the inside track on Park and Mathis hits him in stride. It's a footrace now, and the winner is Kim Seung-Kwan, who brings down Carter at the Quebecois 27. The Phoenixes want blood now, and Mathis is urging his team forward for a quick snap. The pace got the best of the Phoenixes instead, as a completion to Plank is negated by a holding penalty on Coby Damion. No problem though, the Phoenixes get back to work, and George keeps eating away yards. At the 12-yard line, another short run will get the Phoenixes 1st and goal. Mathis is thinking bigger, and sends Eldridge on a post route. Eldridge is simply bigger and faster than Lambert-LeBlois, and it's an easy strike to answer back. Conley's extra point makes it 16-14 for the hosts.

Delaclava 16-14 Quebec*, 9:43 3rd: This game has now become a firefight, as Quebec takes over at the 25 yard line. After a few short passes, Nam is looking long, and he's had success with Kim Joon-Cheol for much of the day, so he tries it again. It's a bad read - Coleman has him well guarded and gets the jump when the ball arrives. Instead of a long Kim reception, it's Coleman's first interception. The Phoenixes defense has a pretty slick choreographed dance in celebration as Coleman runs over to the sideline, donning a large phoenix-plumed hat. The Banijan referee is giving a bit of a side-eye but doesn't do anything else.

Delaclava* 16-14 Quebec, 8:12 3rd: Mathis starts with his offense at the Delaclav 32. He won't be dissuaded by Nam's mistakes. He's feeling his range and thinks he can blow this game open. Now he's finding Carter, Eldridge, and Alés at will - across the middle, on curls, down the sideline. The final blow comes when the Phoenixes have gotten to the 23 yard line. It's five wide, the corners are preoccupied with Carter and Eldridge - and it's Alés with a long slant up the middle that Mathis chooses. Alés catches it in strides past the desperate hands of Chae Woong-Bin, side-steps around Mason Wright, and runs it home. Eight plays on the drive, and Mathis was 8-for-8 with 68 yards and his second touchdown of the day. Conley makes it 23-14 with his kick.

Delaclava 23-14 Quebec*, 5:30 3rd: It doesn't matter what level of play you're talking about - you need high-pressure reps to be able to handle high-pressure situations. Sophomore Joseph Nam has obvious talent, but was not ready for this drive. The Phoenixes had 14 unanswered points and Nam needed to bring something to the table just to keep up. He's got nothing on this occasion - overthrowing and underthrowing receivers left and right. A holding penalty from Jaxx Underwood bails him out once, an offsides penalty from Tristan Kostelecky bails him out twice, but Nam must eventually pay the piper. He waits too long on a 3rd-and-long situation, can't locate a receiver, and Allan Tolliver lights him up for the sack. A particularly rough drive for the young Quebecois team, who was leading earlier this quarter but now looks completely out of sorts. The remaining functional piece of the roster, punter Rasmussen, does well to pin the Phoenixes inside their own 20.

Delaclava* 23-14 Quebec, 3:45 3rd: Fortunately for the visitors, the Phoenixes don't seem to have a killer instinct developed yet. Two consecutive holding penalties and the Phoenixes are in deep trouble on this drive. The best they can hope for is extend and get some breathing room. George comes through once again, reeling off an 18-yard-run up the middle before Wright brings him down. That should have been good enough for a first down, but at least it gets the Delaclav backs off the wall. From here, it's clear that the Delaclav momentum has been somewhat killed, but Mathis is a smart game manager - he's going to keep the ball and the clock running, at least long enough to catch the defense off guard if he does want to take another big shot. The drive extends into Quebecois territory, into the fourth quarter. The Phoenixes finally stall at the 40 yard line. The conditions have gotten a bit windy, and while Conley is ready to go, Bielsa sends out Kurzmann instead. Kurzmann hasn't had a lot to do, only his second time out, but he executes brilliantly, with a short punt that Jaidyn Hunt runs down to stop at the 4-yard line. A long drive that amounted to nothing in the end, but it's still a nine-point lead and the Quebecois don't have much to work with.

Delaclava 23-14 Quebec*, 11:40 4th: The Quebecois start off trying to move methodically up the field, albeit with one eye on the clock. Maheux-Hwang is looking fresh and ready, and Nam keeps feeding him to march up the field. The first sign of trouble is a holding penalty from Nadia Bapkotek, which erases a run that would have put the offense past midfield. The Quebecois get that yardage back with a pass to Berthelette-Nadon, then Nam tries wide receiver Kim downfield, and it's a big gain up the middle into the red zone. Problem - another holding penalty on Bapkotek. That's a bad one too, not able to keep up with Darius Sitter and instead grabbing him by the scruff of the neck, giving Nam the time he needed to locate. The Quebecois can't recover from this second setback. Maheux-Hwang finally gets stuffed by Sitter, then by Ben Dorman. On third down, Nam's best hope is to try Kim again. Coleman knocks it down and taunts Kim on his way back to the line of scrimmage. The referee glares at Coleman in warning, but the cornerback's frustration is understandable - these two have gone back and forth all day. At this stage in the game, with this field position, the Quebecois need a score now. It's 4th down territory. OC Ghislain Maas's selection is a short slant play. DC Lindsay responds, pulling back the line and crowding the middle. Nam can't find Ankou-Ndembele, his first choice, or anyone else. He should have plenty of time, with just two defensive lineman against five O-line. But Sitter gets past Bapkotek again and brings down Nam for the sack. Victory formation may be around the corner, folks.

Delaclava* 23-14 Quebec, 6:40 4th: The ground game of the Phoenixes resumes, and Dexter George passes one hundred yards. No touchdowns to show for it, but he was nevertheless a huge part of the offensive success today. Bielsa has warned his team to keep it clean and not stop the clock. They look a little tentative and George isn't finding all the holes he usually can. Mathis chances a wheel route to Sequoyah Cooper and gets it to keep the drive alive. The Quebecois are using timeouts now to leave time on the clock for themselves. They blow through all three, but Peric and McCowan come up big to make it fourth down. Kurzmann makes his probable final trip out onto the field, punting from the Quebecois 45 and again sticking it inside the 10. It's not a glamorous stat sheet for Kurzmann, with three short punts, but Bielsa is excited with that performance today. The whisper of a chance for the comeback has grown even quieter.

Delaclava 23-14 Quebec*, 3:35 4th: The 70,000 faithful at Sullivan Stadium have gotten loud now, rooting on this defense to close the game out. Nam finds a little-used Leonardo Arcuri up the middle to get a first down and at least get off the goal line, but there's not a lot of time to work with. Nam goes to Arcuri again on a similar route, and Ružička knocks it down. Nam then goes to the well of Kim Joon-Cheol, but it's once too many as Coleman breaks up the connection with ease. He puts a finger to his lips in Kim's direction, making it clear his opinions of the hotshot college star. Third down and Nam is having trouble finding an open receiver. The secondary has shut down all options, and the only man Nam can see is Allan Tolliver, bringing him to the ground for another sack. Now it's fourth and long, clock running, no timeouts, little time to call the right play. The Phoenixes are ready, the Quebecois are not. Sitter breaks through and tackles Nam again. The Phoenixes defense celebrates as Nam lays on the ground in almost certain defeat.

Delaclava* 23-14 Quebec, 2:21 4th: Dexter George makes a heads up play on first down. Another first down is available to him but he gives himself up short of the marker as the clock winds down to the two-minute warning. After the break, George only has a yard to go - but it's actually Mathis who takes it on the sneak. He needs one and gets four. Ball game. Mathis ends up erasing those yards with the kneeling, but the job is done. The home team, the hosts, and the two-time champions are 1-0 to start World Bowl 39. Final score, Delaclava 23, Royal Kingdom of Quebec 14.

Postgame: Good news first: Delaclava won their opening game, have a wide range of talent and effective tactics to call upon, and were eventually able to handle the pressure of closing the game with a lead. This wasn't the biggest test available, in a game that turned out to be men against boys. And weaknesses showed from the home team, with momentary lapses of judgment and focus, and a tendency to play to the level of the opposition. At least the Phoenixes responded positively when needed, such as responding with two consecutive touchdowns after the Quebecois opened the second half with a score. But what happens when a better team punishes those weaknesses more severely, and plays to a level the Phoenixes can't yet match? Those questions loom - next is low-ranked Equestria, but Transmondian Commonwealth is up next and Drawkland concludes both halves of the group stage.

Ten games is not a long group stage, and each team will be jockeying for position. But for now, the Phoenixes have an inside track and will look to build on that. Bigger challenges are around the corner, but today, the Phoenixes passed the first test and gave the home fans something to smile about on the way home.

Time To Recover,
by Hannah Rafferty- SS

We are one game into World Bowl 39, and it will be a game that two nations remember for quite some time, but for very different reasons. It was tough to get on here today, I must admit, after our 20-14 loss to TJUN-ia. What we must do is remember that it was only one game, there are nine more, and we must bounce back. This game will not keep us from getting to the playoffs, failure to respond to it and overcome it will be.

Backtracking a little, it was great to be back in uniform for the national team. There is nothing like being able to represent our country with a bunch of people that you play against at a competitive level. It can be one of the most untold stories in international sports, but to play as a teammates with people that might be on your bitter rival at home is an amazing feeling. It is the chance to get to know them as a person, and then realize that they might not be as bad as you could have thought they were before being a part of the national team. In football, as a defensive back, the best people to talk to are the wide receivers that you are covering at home. There is a lot of trash talk that gets exchanged over a domestic league game, and while it is respectful far more often then it is not, getting together now provides a chance to talk about plays that happened during the season between the two of you. No one is going to give away any secrets, but that is another aspect of why this is so fun and enjoyable.

We were playing against TJUN-ia, on the road in New Washington. It is the first time that this facility had hosted a game of this magnitude, and the fans were ready to show their support. Perhaps there were some commemorative armbands given out for the game to mark the occasion, and maybe even some motivational posters around in sports. By the way, isn’t alcohol free in TJUN-ia? We weren’t ready to explore that since we had more important things to worry about but those of you who may have made the trip might have more knowledge of that. The game was competitive, and I would have preferred that our offense could have put this team away early on in the game, but we were not able to do that. In the end, it was 14-14, and we were set up to win the game.

Then, it didn’t happen. Kiersten Baker lined up for the 39-yard field goal. I was on the sideline, ready to celebrate. This is the type of kick that she is mostly always going to make, and I had full confidence in her. Everything seemed normal about the play, but the snap of Caspian Hitchcock was high. It would be corralled by Tori Flannery and put down for Baker, but that extra tenth of a second might have been costly. The kick was blocked. Then, the kick was returned for a touchdown by Jester Carter. All was great for the home team, and as the fans stormed the field, Megan Schuster was livid on the sideline.

Why? Well, at the Cassadaigua 26, as Carter is bringing the blocked the kick, the speedy Kelsey Stocker is essentially being mugged by the one of the TJUN-ia players as she tried to catch up to Carter. You can never say with certainty that she would have been able to bring down Carter, but she would have been able to have a chance at it. Instead, because of this flagrant holding, she never had the opportunity. After the game, Schuster told reporters, “I hate to make excuses, but at that point the referee sees the fans ready to storm the field, so doesn’t throw the flag, knowing there would be no way in hell to restore order. We did have our chances, however, so it should never have gotten to that point to begin with. Congratulations to TJUN-ia on the win, they have a great team, but we’ll be hoping for braver officials in the future who are ready to rightfully throw a flag in that situation when it needs to be called.” I had to put that quote from coach in, because she handled it a lot better then I would have.

(OOC: TJUN-ia’s RP is based on a dramatic ending that happened about five years ago in a college football game. On that return in that real game, as I looked into it, there was questionable holding on the return that could have had the return called back. Therefore, please don’t consider my inclusion of adding this in as sour grapes. TJUN-ia and I did briefly talk about this on discord).

Well, We Tried
Team Western Fardelshufflestein Kicks off World Bowl in Dead Last
Translated from Fardelshufflesteinian

It was a good game.

Or, more accurately, it was a spectacular game for Team Terre Septetrionale...and a wake-up call for the Brown Bears. What started off as a normal American-style football game soon turned into a bloodbath as our debuting national American football team (which sounded a lot less confusing in my head). The first quarter ended with a score of 8-0 after a successful two-point conversion.
By halftime, Terre Septetrionale had increased their lead to 11-0.

After the killer performance by Western Fardelshufflestein's marching band, all hell broke loose. Terre scored another touchdown (plus a field goal) to bring their total score to 18 not even two minutes into the second half. Following an endless string of pentalties, including an ejection for targeting (Kain Duden, #37), the Brown Bears essentially gave up hope on trying to score. The defense remained strong enough to prevent any further touchdowns in the second half.

But no one could possibly interfere with those four field goals.

Perhaps saying that the Brown Bears "tried" for the entire game is generous, especially for the offense, but perhaps not. There are five more games for them to prove themselves. And if they lose, well...let us hope the Brown Bears put forth their best effort.

Terre Septentrionale blanks Western Fardelshufflestein

Baie-Sainte-Catherine, Charlevoix - World Bowl 38 left a bad taste in our month but things were completely different for game 1 of the World Bowl 39. We received Western Fardelshufflestein at home and we beat them 30-0.

Western Fardelshufflestein won the coin toss and choose to receive the ball. On their first drive, when they were at their own 38 yards line on a 2nd and 12, Matthew Olbrich tried to pass to Dennis Nemetz but the pass was intercepted by DeShawn Lewis-Harris who ran all the way into the endzone for a pick six! Then, I don't know why but the Nordiques decided to attempt a two points conversion and Montavious McBryde ran to the endzone for the two points conversion. Terre Septentrionale added 3 more points before the end of the 1st quarter and were leading 11-0.

Early in the 2nd half, Haylie Woo was sacked by James Bond at the 44 yards line in Fardelshufflestein territory and, after the play, Mr. Bond asked Woo if she wants to sleep with him after the game and she punched him into the face. She was penalized for 15 yards. Then on a 2nd and 24, Woo threw a screen pass to Keyonte Roberts-Whitaker who caugh the ball and ran all the way to the endzone. The conversion was good and Terre Septentrionale was leading 18-0. Western Fardelshufflestein also had their share of penalties and their #37 Kain Duden was even ejected from the game. The score was 18-0 at the halftime.

Terre Septentrionale started with the ball in the 3rd quarter but the team was stopped at the 26 yards line in Fardelshufflestein territory and Nick DeLuca made a 43 yards field goal. He added another one 7 minutes later. The score was 24-0 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Early in the 4th quarter, Matthew Olbrich tried to pass to Friedrich Nowak while using a shotgun formation with 3 wide receivers but the pass was intercepted by backup safety Rashawn Haggerty who returned the ball to the 21 yards line in Fardelshufflestein territory. Terre Septentrionale had to kick a field goal on a 3rd and 4 at the 15 yards line. the 32 yards field goal was good. The Northmen added another field goal, their fourth of the game, a few minutes leter and the score was 30-0 and this is the final score! You probably notice the kicker change, Crockett Burkhead, 36 years old, is still on the team but as a backup kicker in case DeLuca gets injured.

Banija lost

Terre Septentrionale is now in 1st place in group tied with the two other teams who won: Vangaziland and, surprisingly, HUElavia. The surprise of the day in our group was HUElavia beating Banija 27-20 in overtime. And this shows Terre Septentrionale better not take their next opponent lightly. Next week, the Nordiques will travel to HUElavia and try to not pull a Banija. This HUElavia win will make our group interesting, even Vangaziland aren't sure of winning every game unless they publish their roster. Both Banija and us will push hard to win every game and HUElavia are much better than we tought, they can beat us or Vangaziland. Even Western Fardelshufflestein seems like a decent team despite they lost 30-0.

"Not a great start tonight for the Fitin' Falcons as their campaign started out on the road in Xanneria with a 21-3 loss against their hosts. The second ranked team in the Group proved much more than a willing match for the Falcons as a very young team got their first international matchup."

"Yes Bob, it was a rough game. We have to remember with this squad that a lot of them have never played an international game before. The Fitin' Falcons probably should have turned the squad over 2 years ago in the last World Bowl, while the veteran lineup proved good in the first Group Stage, they reversed that undefeated round by losing all of their next round games."

"Yep. This squad was forced to be really young, only 7 returning starters in the 24 players. A very young team pulled from the Taeshan Football League. We all kind of thought that the draw of visiting the second place team in the Group on the first matchday was a bit rough. How do you think they fair moving forward John"?

"Well it is a relatively interesting group. They should really be favored. A lot of lower ranked sides, but after 3 tournaments making the finals the last two tournaments have been less than stellar. They were hot for a while, but recently they have not in fact, been hot."

"What do you think they can learn from this game"?

"I think they kind of got punched in the mouth. They weren't expecting Xanneria to be that good and it showed. I think sometimes better teams lose games sometimes, but Taeshan was not the better team. Maybe we see them in the return matchup get a big revenge win, but right now that seems hard to believe."

"Do you think they can figure out the offense? It looked a little...well a lot lackluster tonight."

"Yeah I think so. We've got a young quarterback in only his 2nd year in the professional league, one of the best in the World, and a bunch of young linemen. IT could be a process. Luckily he has some talented Wide Receivers, some veterans as well and that could go a long way in making this team succesful."
