The Protectorate and Clanship of Mamasa

A Brief Overview of the Clanship
The Protectorate and Clanship of Mamasa is a clanship and tribal conglomeration, with a small council and High Chief Herrick as their legislature. Located deep within the Delta Quadrant of the Milky Way, the Clanship occupy the solar system of Ma, consisting of five terrestrial planets, three gas giants, two asteroid belts, an exoplanet, and a binary star in the middle of it. Hailing from the smallest of seven moons, called Mameno II, orbiting a gas giant, named Mameno. The majority of the species live within arcologies, stemming deep underground and linking together through hyper train systems, while small tribes loyal to them are birthed, live and die in the hive vessels up above them in space.

With a small population of approximately one hundred million, the Dimonicae ruling bodies, along with the ruling Council, have placed population restrictions on them as they are capable of gestating high numbers of young, developing and maturing within months, and squandering the minimal resources they have. Most of the population live modest lives of hard work, mining precious resources in the asteroid belts, gas giants, and terrestrial worlds in the system for the local cluster. They have incredibly robust, efficient, and large production facilities on the neighbouring planets producing everything from simple toys to complex technologies. The Mamasa have incredible talents for understanding science and engineering, introducing many biomechanical technologies to the cluster, along with have a great knack for being to reverse engineer foreign technology very quickly; despite these talents, the group have been going a slight technological stunting, with many of the foremost scientists and engineers going missing shortly after delivering the technology to the Dimonicae.

The people of Mamasa care very little when it comes to standards of living, having very little material possessions, preferring to spiritually and intellectual enrich themselves, passing on their knowledge through the genetic looms that they use to genetically study their young for defects and abnormalities.

A Brief History of the Clanship
The Mamasa first emerged as a society only a thousand or so years ago, with a archaeological digs providing insight that tribes and clans had been roaming for around six thousand before that. The first tribes united under a leader they called the Herrick, after the person supposedly managed to tame a rather violent and large dinosaur like lizard, similar to a pterodactyl. Herrick is still a title used to this day for both the head of state and ceremonial purposes. As Mamasa culture promoted oral history and story telling, very little of what actually happened in those six thousand years actually remains today, only through fables and fairy tales that are spread by the tribal and clan elders. Most historians and researchers believe that these few events may have occurred, only far less dramatized. An example is the story of Vol, a young Massa that did not heed their parents warning of trailing too far from the tribal camp; Vok gets lost, witnesses a meteor shower, fights off a fire and rock monster that lands from a meteorite, and finds his way home, using it as an omen not to stray from the camp. Camp elders claim the story is over a hundred or so years old, and is a small tale about listening to your elders, while scientists managed to calculate that a meteor shower did pass over where the tribe camp supposedly stayed, along with traces of meteorite activity along the area.

The race developed space faring capability while attempting to flee volcanic activity, using their small flying vessels to make short jumps along the atmosphere before attempting to develop a craft that could break orbit and hypothesise that a colony that could live in geosynchronous orbit to avoid obliteration. The vessel used to achieve that was scrapped for parts a few years later, when new biotechnology was developed to help with computing power and navigational duties. After breaking new ground with the biotechnology, living metal, or regenerative metallic polymer alloy, each clan were quick to adopt it for different uses; some began to use it for production uses, some for scientific research, and a small group using it to develop weapons. The Great Immolation occurred after the Hak’to Clan developed new ballistic weaponry and armour, allowing them to seize huge amounts of land. Tribes began to flock for protection, offering their meagre resources in a growing population of nearly three billion. The subsequent conflict devastated the moon, destroying a huge amount of the survival surface and almost driving the race to extinction. After uniting in the sacred ‘Blue Place’, the remnants of the Mamasa United under a new Herrick, Va’Joa of Clan Ta’Rae, due to her peaceful actions in the war.

The next few hundred years consisted of rebuilding; new, self sufficient arcologies were designed, biomechanical technology that helped shape space travel was discovered, and the elders wrote a new religion, pushing for a simple life, with a focus on spiritual and intellectual enlightenment. Around three hundred years after the Great Immolation, the bustling nation had started to travel through their system, and established small colonies and outposts on several celestial bodies. It wasn’t until the incident known as the ‘Haze Catastrophe’ that Mamasa would be exposed to the outer universe; a rouge Dimonicae piracy vessel attacked several transport vessels from a gas mine, destroying them and alerting the presence of the Dimonici Isolationist Imperial Regime. After a rough first contact, the Dimonicae ambassador managed to introduce the Mamasa to the other Protectorates under Dimoniquids’ influence; the Confederacy of Barva, the Roaming Legion of Muun, and the Shaknor Alliance. It toom several trips, along with several surprisingly well timed incursions from unknown forces to have the latest High Chief Herrick, Ka’Vok of Clan Ta’Sho, to formly ask the Dimonici Isolationist Imperial Regime to become a Protectorate.

A Brief Geography of the Clanship
The Ma System is home to five terrestrial planets, all having inhospitable environments for Massa to live in, resulting in the need for contained arcologies, some become military outposts for neighbouring allies, while others become science research stations, helping reverse engineer new technologies found. A few have even become religious monasteries, helping those who travel far to achieve enlightment. The terrestrial planets are named, in order of closest to the binary stars, Sho, Vae, Met, Luk and Mek. Mek stands at the largest, with a ring around it formed from the collision of its two natural satellites. Sho, Met, and Mek are considered sister planets; all are fairly close together in terms of mass, size, and atmosphere composition, but the environments are very different. Sho is a water planet, with very little in terms a raw resources, but is considered to be the best for the monasteries due to its calm weather. Met is a rocky, barren planet, with very little flora and fauna to speak of, however is home to a variety of carnivorous and aggressive species that roam the lands. The final of the sisters is Mek, being the most mysterious as most attempts to send vessels there have ended in catastrophe, with one in twenty vessels returning. Luk is home to the advanced shipyards and weapons testing facilities; being the smallest and furthest away, permission was given to the Dimonicae ruling body to use it test and build ships and weapons in the defense of the system.

The three gas giants are considered to be solar triplets, similar to the sister planets described before. Mameno is the closest to the central stars, holding seven natural satellites in its orbit; the most important being Mameno II, home to the Mamasa. Samemo is the next, being the largest, with no satellites at all, but several rings around it from the remnants of what may have been its satellites. Samemo is the primary gas mining source, with the largest array of gasses available for collection. The last is Henamo, a relatively boring and uneventful gas giant with no satellites, and no rings around it. Primarily used for mining specific hydrogen fuel for the power cells of the Roaming Legion of Muun.

The data pad you received from the Mamasa delegate was odd, to say the least. The internals scream advanced computers, the block writing floating on the black glass as you scan it through, the touch sensitive screen, even the light blue backing colour screams 'cyber'. The outside speaks slightly differently; exposing some of the internals, the greyish brown case vibrates and hums with your touch. The smooth leather, alloy or polymer seems to react depending on how to behave with it; a no-nonsense military officer, who might be more familiar with sturdy products, would find the case has hardened, whereas someone more in tune with studying xenoanthropology, gentle and delicately handling the pad like an ancient time, would find the leather begins to mould itself around your fingers, allowing a more comfortable experience. As you ponder the next step, you swipe the screen up, activating something inside.

A series of clicks, chirps, and shrieks beckon from the sides of the pad, before a small amount of computer coding appears to flash on screen, eventually presenting a small figure; small, skinny, with sunken eyes and brown skins, no nose and a small mouth peering back at you. It greets you in the same clicks, chirps, and shrieks you heard before, until the figure looks down at a small pad in his hands. The pad flickers, unveiling some sort of laser scanning device that surveys your current environment and recedes. The figure suddenly materialises before you: a four foot tall, bipedal creature, looking at you with curiosity; they cock their head before pressing the pad again.

"Hello there, new acquaintance! I'm glad to have finally met you!" The figure calls, in your native language. They give a small hand gesture, something of a welcoming wave, from what you guess. "I am your designated factbook and directory guide, Clo. I Hail from a small moon in the Ma system, called Mameno II - did you know there's seven of them?" They continued, pointing up and displaying the solar map for the Ma system, and then zooming in on the Mameno gas giant and her satellites. "I'm here to help guide your through this maze of information; but first, a little about myself."

"As a senior xenoanthropologist in my Clanship, I was chosen as the representative of my race and species, having my mind cloned and developed in an artificial intelligence, or ancilla, as my people call them. I'm not self thinking; I have all the information required to guide you through this factbook stored in my memory, along with several programs that will allow me to interact, react, and answer any questions you may have along the way." The creature began, displaying various program codes through the holographic interface. As you place the tablet down at your desk, table, or other studying area, the holographic display begins to expand; a small typing keyboard, along with a larger screen appears before you. "Where would you like to begin?"

Formation of the First Tribes

Anthropologists and biological researchers believe that life on Mameno II occurred because it was at the right distance from the gas giant and the sun, allowing it to develop water and sustain life. With its high volcanic activity, the atmosphere was drenched with methane clathrate, pushing the evolution of a set of breathing organs that use the oxygen and hydrogen as fuel, and expel the carbon as waste. Fossil records are incredibly scarce, with only few specimens available for study – Massa, thousands of years ago, were much more soft, less capable of birthing large amounts of young, and a foot taller than modern day Massa. Tests show that there is a shared common ancestor with the dual pronged stink beetle.

With the moons high volcanic activity, most fossils were found around the Na’vak Mount, a dormant volcano which is the largest on the moon. Other fossils and records of tools have been found at other volcanoes, but the sites at Na’vak provide much more insight to their history. It wasn’t until they managed to domesticated large load carrying creatures that their ability to move to other volcanoes and breed into other groups became apparent, with artefacts showing harnesses and carts attached to the remains of a large horned creature in multiple sites. Most groups, after expediting to the Na’vak Mount, formed into what is today considered the first tribe.

From the very few detailed records existing, along with painted pots and cave art, somewhere between three and six separate tribes managed to emerge, with few splinter groups emerging in between. The conflict lasted very little time, with some clans merging together to form bigger forces and exchanging new weapon technology, such as bronze and Iron swords, composite material bows, and mounted combat emerging as the main focus of battles.

It’s unknown how long it was after the conflict, or whether it was the end of the conflict itself, that the first Chief Herrick was found. Researchers believe that the “Bone Sword of Hat’nar” belonged to them, as the blades of the weapons were carbon dated and determined to be made of a pterosaur like creature that roamed the moon around the time the tribes emerged.

The Rise of the First Herrick

It’s unsure whether the end of the conflict was caused by the naming of the first Herrick, or whether the first Herrick appeared far after the end of the conflict; differing tribes present different tales as to who was there, what the challenges the candidates undertook were, or whether the story is even true. The tale states that each chief from the tribes were to undertake a feat; one for strength, one for courage, one for wisdom, and one for luck.

After many great feats were accomplished, the weakest tribes chief offered for one of their offspring to attempt the feats, as they were heavily injured, or liable to fail regardless of what they attempted. The offspring considered each feat, and decided that the only way to win the challenges was to attempt a feat so complex and grand, that the tribes would have to submit to them. From cave paintings and other proto art that was available for study, the offspring climbed a small volcano, lured a large pterasaur creature from its nest, and managed to trap it using fumes from the volcano. After spending some time gaining its trust and rearing it, they fashioned a harness from nearby trees, and flew the beast back to the tribes and presented it to them

The tribes, fully convinced that the feat met all the challenge requirements, proclaimed the offspring the Chief Herrick. The Herrick apparently took time to understand each tribe, trying to understand their needs and desires, while asking the elders for help forming a council to delegate their responsibilities.

The tribes moved from the volcanoes, as noted from various jewellery artefacts depicting several similar clan insignia found at various archaeological digs, and began to process of developing agriculture, medicine, and trade.

The Colonisation of the Western Isles

Around two thousand years later, and history has changed. History is recorded, apposed to written down; metal weaponry and armour has been developed; science has begun to become a mainstream part of Massa life, along with increased art, music, and theatre. Historians have found many diaries and records in the ‘Cartographer of Nak'rud’, a large complex built into the side of a small mountain to house documents – a library, of sorts. Other documents found revealed the planning of the initial city that became the capital, drawings and schematics of farming devices found in settlements that carbon date to around the same time. After researchers managed to unearth the Cartographer, they found that it was named so due to the architect wanting to ‘map out their entire history for future generations’.

As the capital, Samen, grew larger, trade with other clans and tribes became more frequent, with scholars developing new boats to carry larger cargo and cement to help develop roads established as trade routes. It wasn’t until a missing voyage returning after seven months of its disappearance did the Western Isles fully reveal itself. Written testimonies from the crew depicted harsh weather throughout the trip, along with sea creatures infesting the waters as well. After careful examination from modern day researchers, the historians were able to conclude that the sailors had probably encountered the previous ancestors of a cone headed giant squid, a razor backed megalodon, and a bioluminescent four winged stingray.

The crew had brought back many things; fruits, vegetables, new metals and precious stones, along with live animals. Examples of these were placed in vacuum sealed jars, which were tested and each found themselves genetically linked several types good that are grown today; the red core, which is a dense, potato like vegetable which grows a large array of environments; the green slit berry, which were considered a true delicacy due to trouble growing in the colder climate; and the blue grass root, a root vegetable which became the source of many dyes due to the dark, desirable pigment. Metals that were found and brought back were tested by metallurgical researchers and were discovered to be gold, aluminum, and tungsten. The stones, most of which had been cut down, turned out to be emeralds and rubies. From records, researchers believe the animals brought back were a variety of beetles, flying lizards, and butterflies; descendants of which have all been driven extinct due to their use in dye pigments, clothing, and food. Further voyages show to discovery of gun powder type materials and new experimental medicinal herbs.

With these new developments increasing the value of Samen and its society, historical accounts suggest that the Herrick at the type summoned a large naval and land force to invade the isles for these resources, along with capturing the indigenous people as slaves. Other historical accounts also suggest that problems occurring within Samen, including peasant revolts, food shortages and lack of work. After sending their forces west, the Herrick began to face turbulence on both sides of their Clanship. After several skirmishes with the peasants other clans sought to infiltrate their way into Samen politics, and through funding and supporting their revolt effort, managed to dispose of the Herrick and most of their clan members. The Wer’sho – Vet’ka Peace Accord details that ceasing of the invasion of the Western Isles, and protection of the Isles from further harm.
