Critics of Lord Baden Powell's reputation have long accused him posthumously of paedophilia, hating homosexuals, and atrocities during military service in Africa, although historians have argued the allegations are untrue and unfair.
Now local police in Dorset, where a statue memorialises Lord Baden-Powell, have deemed it is at extreme risk of vandalism after a mob pulled down and tossed into the harbour an unpopular statue in Bristol of a philanthropist whose fortune was made in the slave-trading East Africa Company, and the local authorities have decided to remove it 'temporarily' to protect it.
A group of local residents, much smaller than the protesters in Bristol but otherwise peaceful and orderly, gathered at the quayside to show support for the statue to remain.
I think the council's decision is based on the fact that the local police are not enabled to deal with the sort of mass, iconoclastic vandalism which blighted Bristol, and is no more than a pacifier to violent counter-cultural forces. Are the leftist people who want the statue down permanently the same people who object to the immortalisation in stone and marble of liberal icons who have actually had sexually sinister pasts?
One good example is Oscar Wilde, lionised by the Left, of whom there are several statues across the nation. The court trial whose outcome ruined his reputation revealed his sexual proclivities with under-aged boys. These acts would be defined even now as sexual crimes and reprehensible.
