To all the Pitz Fanatics hearing or watching us around the globe: Welcome to the 84rth edition of the Mulawil Halab, organized and hosted by the Mutul ! This is the Roleplay and Results threads, where you will be kept informed of the competition's situation, the results of all matches, and where you will be able to post your stories, reports, and bulletins.

Thes rules of the group stages are simple : Teams in each group play against each others in a Round-Robin, and the top two teams will advance to the Knockout phases. The ranking is determined as follow :

By the number of matches won
The rounds ratio (the number of rounds won divided by the total number of rounds lost)
The number of balls passed through Stone Circles

Schedule :

Matchday 1 will be on Wednesday, June 3rd.

“They went first before their Grandmother ; And thus they discovered the ball of their father...”

The priest sang the holy verses atop of the temporary platform that had been built in front of the Ballcourt. The Opening Ceremony of the World Court included danses, songs, and the consecration of the courts that were to host all the games of the following weeks. There was no bloodletting, because the event was organized by secular, non-ordained, people, but there were still some rituals to follow.

“They rejoiced, and went as Ballplayers to the Ballcourt…”

The priest continued while the dansers followed the slow rhythm of the music. In the crowd, the twelve Pitz teams that had come to Yu to participate in the Mulawil Halab, the World Court.

“They played alone for a long time ; sweeping the Ballcourt of their father…”

One side of the crowd was on its knees, back straight, arms crossed in front of their chest. It was the proper way to pray, to commune with the higher powers that had been summoned by the priests. The other side of the crowd was still standing up. They were not White Pilgrims and were thus bound by no rule to participate in the rituals, even if they were allowed to spectate.

“Then they heard it, the Lords of Xibalba say ; Someone started a game above our heads again…”

At the forefront of the White Pilgrim crowd was the Mutulese Pitz Team, all dressed up in their ceremonial clothes. While the managers, trainers, and other coaches wore robes and religious dresses matching their ranks in the Mutulese Clergy, the players wore outfits reminiscent of a long gone shamanistic past, made out of furs, leather, and feathers.

“Aren’t they ashamed thither ; that they stomp about hither ?”

The music accelerated, as the God Impersonators came forth. One Death. Seven Death. And all the other gods of the Underworld. And they sang their song of contempt, and summoned the Heroic Twins to play Pitz in their Realm, as they had defied their father and uncle a generation before, and killed them. Normally, there would have been two childs impersonating the Twins with each team, but only the countries with Sakbeists communities were able to bring them.

“One Death ! Seven Death !” Exclaimed the singing Priest. “Summon them Hither !” A call repeated by all the Lords of Hell.

“They must come ; Here we will play with them ; They must come ; go tell them when you arrive “

The dancers-messengers were sent, two for each team, and the procession began. The music reached its climax as the doors were opened to let the column of players and officials enter the Court, while the public was funneled into the stands to follow the rest of the ceremony from there.

“They must come ; Heed the Words of Thunder ! ; They must come ; One Death, Seven Death ; They are silent too ; For we Heed the Words of Thunder !”

And then, on the podium installed on one side of the court, the K’uhul Ajaw, Jasaw Chan K’awiil V, appeared in all of his royal regalia. Symbols and clothes that evoked, in the minds of those accustomed to Mutuleses manners, the claim to divine hood of their wearer as well as its ancestral ties to the storms, to thunder. As always, Jasaw Chan K’awiil did not depart from his stern, cold expression, even if some close enough to see or watching from their television could’ve sworn he looked more casual than usual.

The music slowed and then died down, while the Divine Monarch waited for enough silence to begin his speech. After a few second, his grave voice was amplified and reverberated in the entire stadium.

“We welcome all guests to the most legendary and holy Ballcourt of Xaktuhun, here, in Yu. We congratulate everyone gathered here today, as well as those in the many Viewing spaces around the city or watching us at home, either on their television or online. We congratulate this united Pitz community for once again showing it’s love of this time immemorial sport which has brought together people from all around the world. In its time, it even brought together mortal enemies, and miraculously brought peace when nothing else could. It’s a sport like no other, and we are sincerely proud of being relied on to once again host the Mulawil Halab, an event like no other. We can only be saddened that it couldn’t have been held as it should’ve been in the Federal States of Enyama, because of the tragic circumstances we all know.

It is our belief that Pitz is more than a game, but a dance and a prayer. A prayer for peace, a symbolic return to harmony and balance. Through Pitz, and for Pitz, our duty is to preserve this power of humanity for generations to come. It our dream to see through the development of sport the strengthening of peace and mutual understanding between people. I wish all the teams’ success and an unforgettable experience for the supporters. Welcome to Our Most Divine Realm.”

Acclamation and applause followed the speech of the Divine Monarch. As he exited the stage he was replaced by a shorter, round, man, dressed in plain clothes compared to its royal predecessor. It was the jovial President of the International Secular Pitz Rectorate, the organism in charge of organizing the World Court.

“Welcome to the World Court. For the next two weeks, the best Pitzom from around the world will face one another for the prized Mulawil K’ol. May the best team win, and may all face adversity head high. Enjoy the biggest celebration of Pitz’ International Community. Thank you, Your Holiness, thank you, the Divine Kingdom.”

With this short speech and the following applause, the Ceremony was complete. Ch’aaj Akt’un, one of the most renowned player of the previous generation of Pitzom and now retired, made the first serve of the competition, officialy starting it.

Group 1 : Messidor (MSD) v. Jhengtsang (JHG)

round 1 : 6 - 4(*)
round 2 : 13 - 11
round 3 : 9(*) - 5

An incredible performance from the Wobblies for this very first match of the competition ! Not only have they managed to held strong against the Red Terrors and win a very long, and tense, second round that kept the public on its seat until the very last moment, but they also followed it up by what can only be described as a miracle for such a young team : they finished the third round by passing the ball through a Stone Circle ! An incredible first match for the World Court, but can the Wobblies repeat such an exploit ? And was this a bad omen for the Unionite team, or just a bad night ?

Group 2 : Odarba-Halad v. Sante Reze

A clash of titans between two of the most famed teams in the competition. But despite an incredible early game for the Rezeses, winning the first round in a matter of minutes with a perfectly orchestrated pass through a Stone Circle, they ended up being punished by the Caliph's Hip for it. They ended up being barely able to score on the Haladians and were utterly dominated by their excellent score-focused game. A lesson for the rest of the competition ?

Group 3 : Mutul v. Vardana

Despite a tense first round during which the Mutuleses only managed to get up ahead on the score board during the last dozen of minutes of so, the Reds were completely powerless to stop the Court Lords from not only finishing that round with a welcome (but quite meaningless since they would've won score-wise anyway) pass through a Stone Circle, but also from opening the next round with another pass through, ending the match early. Even for the Mutuleses, famed for their Stone Circle focused style, managing to get two Stone Circles back to back is an incredible performance and we can only hope for them that it's a good omen for the rest of the World Court!

Group 4 : Ostrozava v. Belfras

total : 0 - 2

The clash between Ostrozava, a team very new to Pitz, and the Belfrasians went exactly as everyone imagined, despite the hopes the incredible Messidor v. Jhengtsang match had given to many spectators. Eliphas' Babes dominated the match and through their rapid succession of Stone Circles, it was one of the shortest confrontation of the competition, barely enough time for the Ostrozavans to show their worth. An attentive eye however would notice that the second round was pretty close score-wise, with the Belisarian team not letting themselves be distanced by the Norumbians until that decisive stone circle. Maybe a sign of things to come ?

Matchday 2

Group 1 : Jhengtsang (JHG) v. Charnea (CHR)

round 1 : 0 - 1(*)
round 2 : 7(*) - 4
round 3 : 0 - 1(*)
total : 1 - 2

First match for the Charneans and an excellent performance for them, ending two rounds in mere minutes through well coordinated efforts and a risky style that payed off. One could have said the Red Terrors had been overclassed if it wasn't for that second round, which temporary gave hope back to the Unionites supporters only to be crushed again by that quick third round. A messy business. The Unionites aren't out of the run for the qualifications, however, as if either the Charneans or the Messidorians win next day's match by crushing their opponents to the point that they can't win a single more round, then the Red Terrors may still very well win their ticket for the Knock-out phase. However, this is in the hands of the gods now, and they're not known believers.

Group 2 : Sante Reze (SR) v. Ghant (GHT)

round 2 : 1(*) - 0
total : 2 - 0

The Rezeses must have had a lot of pent-up frustration from their previous match, because they lashed out against the Ghantish team. Marking two back-to-back Pass Through, they didn't even left their opponents an occasion to mark a single point. They came, they played for a few minutes, then left. A lesson in Pitz that left spectators a bit dissapointed. World Court tickets are expensive and the Ghantish who came all the way to Yu only to see their team lose in less than a quarter of hour might be the most dissapointed of them all. Not only that, but if their team doesn't perform miracles during the next matchday, they might very well have already lost their chance to reach the Knock Out phases.

Group 3 : Vardana (VRD) v. Uluujol (ULJ)

round 1 : 6 - 9
round 2 : 9 - 7
round 3 : 5 - 9
total : 1 - 2

A long and tense match between teams of equal talent, everything remained possible until the very end. But it's the Uluujoleses who got the best out of their opponents. Maybe one of the most exciting fight of the competition yet but alas, this is the official end of the Reds participation in this World Court, as they can no longer climb upward in the rankings, nor can they hope a mistake from their other group members during the next matchday to save them.

Group 4 : Belfras (BLF) v. Pulau Keramat (PK)

round 1 : 1(*) - 0
round 2 : 2(*) - 2
total : 2 - 0

Once again an exemplar performance from the Belfrasians. Another short match that left the public wanting for more, but an impeccable prestation that grant Eliphas' Babes their place to the next phase of the competition. A bummer for the Pulaui, who will have to face the Ostrozavans with everything they got to make sure they get their place for the Knock-out. Unless they act out-of-character and underestimate the Ostrozavans ? The balance of power is not in the favour of the East-Belisarians but who knows, this is Pitz, everything is possible !

The Caliph's Hip blitzes points

YU, MUTUL - The throngs of excited crowds shook the stands as the Rezese national team orchestrated a perfect pass through the Circle just minutes into the first round. What began as a strong lead for Sante Reze, though, slowed as the Caliph's Hip took advantage of the Rezese focus on the circle, sowing confusion and finding a weak link in the team in the form of Court Tarauaze's Aldryk Myllur.

A controversial purchase by Paladino, and even moreso as a choice for the national team, Aldryk was expected to be tempered by his women's team counterpart Kinzia Cacaol and for the most part that has been true. His insistence on making attempts at the Circle despite suboptimal conditions and against the clear wishes of fellow wallman Keqeive, however, might indicate brewing trouble for the team. One thing at least is clear: Myllur does not know when he should stay in reserve.

Cacaol, however, insisted that this would not be the case when asked in the locker room. "Aldryk is a great player," Cacaol said, "And his history is history. I've been coaching him since he made the World Court team. He's a team player. It just takes time to adjust to play at the World Court level.

Team captain Jawitz and his women's counterpart Efre Mirim, however, refused to comment on Myllur's play, saying only that the Caliph's Hip was always going to be an uphill battle.

Matchday 2 Expectations

The All-Greens second game is against Ghant, a weak opponent for the level of play that Sante Reze can field. Both teams focus on the circle, and there is just no analysis which suggests Ghant can outplay the Rezese at their own game. If Ghant adjusted their approach for pure point scoring, they might be able to introduce an advantage for them, even if they can't reach the level of the Hip

Recap: All-Greens vs Magpies
Ghant Crushed by the Circle

YU, MUTUL - eleven minutes and thirty-seven seconds. Simultaneously disappointing and encouraging, the All-Greens didn't just pull together a win against Ghant, but carefully orchestrated a quick and merciless dismantling of their ability to control the ball. Was anyone in the audience particularly enthused to see it, though, having paid so much to be there with little to end up seeing? Most would likely have preferred the high-scoring excitement of Group 3's match.

Aldryk Myllur, however, acquitted himself well accomplishing both pass-throughs with the support of his senior wallman Keqeive. With luck, he establishes that this is his base level of play and not a fluke. Meanwhile, the question for the Ghantish is if protector Lagara will recover from his bruised thigh inflicted by a well-targeted attempt at taking him down from Belfrasian-born vanguard Grumio Olearius. Olearius is known for his preference of playing against opposition players rather than for points, and he shined (if one could say that) in this capacity, effectively removing Lagara from play halfway into the first round.

Matchday 3 Expectations

With a rest day for the All-Greens, most Rezese Pitz fans are cheering for the Lords. This should be a more entertaining match with the asymmetrical play styles, but a likely and rightful win for the Oxidentali. With the Lords and the Caliph's Hip likely winning their own games, though, the All-Greens are in a much more precarious position than last World Court. Myllur should expect to weather more blame despite his performance against the Magpies.

Matchday 3

Group 1 : Charnea (CHR) v. Messidor (MSD)

Round 1 : 3(*) - 3
Round 2 : 4(*) - 5
Total : 2 - 0

After the incredible fight against Jhengtsang, the Charneans had announced they would not take the Wobblies seriously, and it shows. It was an hardfought scoring battle between the two teams but the superior wallmen of Charnea made all the difference. An intense match, but with low stakes as both teams were already qualified. The only question was "who would fight the Mutuleses next round" and the answer is : Messidor. Some jokes that the Charneans should've made sure to lose the match, as the Revenants had boasted that they would repair past perceived wrongs and settle the score with the Court Lords. A bold claim of rivalry that fell in deaf ears, as so far no associate of the Mutulese team have commented on it, or seem to be aware of it really.

Group 2 : Ghant (GHT) v. Odarba Halad (OH)

Round 1 : 1 - 9
Round 2 : 1(*) - 2
Round 3 : 1 - 9
Total : 1 - 2

No miracle from the Magpies, but the honor is safe, having managed to make a Pass-Through against the Caliph' Hips, something very few teams can boast about. Beside that surprising action, the match went about as one would've expected between two teams of such different level. It was the Ghantish tragedy of this World Court, really : being placed in the same group as two of the best Pitz team currently in the Game.

Group 3 : Uluujol (ULJ) v. Mutul (MTL)

Round 1 : 3 - 2(*)
Round 2 : 9 - 6
Round 3 : 0 - 2(*)
Total : 1 - 2

Not the greatest performance of the Mutul, who really struggled during the second round against the Scarlet Strike and ultimately couldn't catch up against their Score game. The public would've to wait until the third round to see the Court Lords finally at their normal level, and scoring the final Pass-Through of the game in mere minutes, no longer allowing the Ochraneses to score a point. Some accuse the Mutuleses to have entered the match with the wrong mindset, not taking their opponent seriously. Nonetheless, both teams are qualified for the Knock-Out phase, and must now promptly get ready for their respective matches.

Group 4 : Pulau Keramat (PK) v. Ostrozava (OZV)

Round 1 : 9 - 1
Round 2 : 9 - 1
Total : 2 - 0

An excellent prestation from the Pulaui, even if it's against a team made of part-timers and ex-volleyballers. The Ostrozavans, who had shown so much potential during the qualification phases, were not given any room by the other teams in their group to show any of their worth. Meanwhile, the Pulaui go on to the Knock-Out phase to face the Charneans with a very sour taste in their mouth, as one can't say that their fanatics are really reassured after their match against Belfras. Let us hope that this Group Stage will give them the rage to surpass themselves, and everyone else !

MESSIDOR UNION REACHES WORLD COURT QUARTERFINALS

The game of pitz has until recently been relatively unheard of in the Messidor Union, especially in the Republic of Merovia where hockey, association football, and motor racing are the traditional sports. However, the Mutulese game of pitz has been growing in popularity over the past decade and received growing support within Messidorian recreational leagues.

On June 2, the 84th Mulawil Halab event opened in the city of Yu - the first event attended by a Messidorian team. The six-man team known as "The Wobblies" is comprised of the Union's top 6 Merovian and Aɣmatian players. However, despite their clear skill, they certainly underdogs compared to the might of Mutul, Tulura, Sante Reze, and our neighbour Charnea, among others. The Messidorians surprised many by winning their first match against Jhengtsang and putting up a good showing against Charnea - sufficient to qualify for the quarterfinals which is impressive for the team's first entry. The Messidorian "Wobblies" will face off against the hosts of the event Mutul in the first knockout round: a daunting opponent to be sure. Team captain Antoine Harpagon gave an interview to the press stating:

"We're really just getting the ball down over the court and scoring as much as possible so we're practicing at getting the ball down over the court and scoring and then we work on actually getting the ball down over the court and scoring."

When asked about the team's approach to the walls and the circles, Harpagon gave a blank stare for a moment before reiterating "We're really just getting the ball down over the court and scoring as much as possible" - a disconcerting answer considering Harpagon is, himself, a wallman.

Six Pitzomob stood before a hooded figure whose face was barely visible despite the powerful lights of the training facility. They were at attention, chin up, hand behind their back, like soldiers. Other hooded figures were standing still all around them. It was the Team’s staff, in their official religious clothes. They had a menacing aura to them, but that was only fitting, considering they were as much the clergy of the gathered Pitzomob as their tormentors.

The central hooded figure only slightly turned his face to look at two of the players. “Aapop. Sekan. I suppose you already know why I call you out ? Resume it.”

Both players nodded. “Our defense has been lacking against the Uluujolese. We did not manage to defend adequately our backline which ended up costing us the round.” Answered one of the two. For Sekan Ho Kab’an, Pitz was of utmost importance, both as a sport and a religion. There was no doubt in his mind that he had faulted, which was inexcusable for a creature such as him : a God of Pitz. Thus, there was no hesitation in his voice, and he was ready to face the consequences of his acts.

Aapop Sakmal, however, was a decade older than his comrade and while he was as divinized, if not more, he had other sources of concerns. “We should’ve responded more quickly to the Uluujolese threat. We lost precious minutes sticking to a plan that did not work, which ended up costing us the round.” There was no hesitation nor guilt in his voice, because he neither feared nor hoped what would come next. Since he first picked up a ball at the age of five, he had been through thousands of such “Introspectives”.

The hooded figure nodded. Then, another staff member arrived, holding a rope barbeled with maguey thorns. “Sekan. Bloodletting followed by a twenty minutes of meditation in the Fire Room. You know which Mantras to use.”

The Pitzom nodded, and took the thorny rope. He then began to pass it through his lips, his ears, his upper arms, reopening the wounds made by many previous passages of similar ropes and letting blood drips slowly from them. The second staff member collected in a bowl the precious red liquid. It would probably be immediately carried out to serve as an offering, before it coalesce. But that was only the first part of the “punishment”. Seemingly unconcerned by his wounds and always with a gracious-yet-arrogant face, Sekan Ho Kab’an, walked away from the rest of the team, followed by to staff members, to the Fire Room, where he would have to pray and meditate while suffocating. It’s only once he was gone that the hooded figure shifted his attention back to Aapop, the team captain. An honor worth many privileges, but also increasing the expectations of the staff and reducing their tolerance toward failure.

“Aapop. Visit to the Therapist for an Acupuncture session.Ten minutes. Others: dismissed. Resume physical training.”

All five nodded and Aapop Sakmal left the open area while his other team members brought out large heavy chains and weights for a small late training session under the supervision of various robed men. Contrary to what the name might implies, Mutuleses “Physical Therapists” weren’t just expected to improve physical performances by their art, but also to punish failure in a way that would not impact their patients in the long term. And as befitting of the Mutulese national Pitz team, their Therapist was unequivocally recognized as the best of his profession.

Aapop opened the door to the Therapist room without announcing himself first. After all, he was expected. The table was already ready, and so was the practitioner, wearing his odd beige uniform. No word was required and Aapop went on his own to the table and laid himself down on his stomach. First the therapist spread disinfectant on Aapop’s back, and then took a single needle.

“What is the first precept of improvement ?” Asked the therapist. A ritual question, a ritual response.

“Pass through Xibalba. Land of Suffering and Death. Spring out at the end, Reborn.” Aapop calmy recited, not even closing his eyes to remember, while the first needle was planted in an area especially painful. Automatically, he gritted his teeth, but stopped immediately. To contract was the worst thing to do in such a situation.

And then there was another needle. And another one. Each time pain increased significantly until it was barely tolerable even for someone who has been going through such punishment for more than twenty years now. The ransom of success - and failure. After ten long minute, the Therapist finally delicately removed the needles one by one, washing and disinfecting the wounds behind him. “Well then” the doctor said. “What’s the fifth precept of improvement ?”

“Think. Prepare. Act. Learn. Meditate.” Aapop answered once again without hesitation. This time, the Therapist began to massage the old captain, making sure he would leave his room in perfect condition. This was true of all the punishments the Pitzom had to face, by the end of it the only thing vivid was the memory.

“Now, I heard you were facing the Messidorian team next, hm ? Quite the surprise.” Asked the doctor, to which Aapop only nodded. “I have been told by the Trainer to put your time here to good use, and he has put an interesting selection of clips and videos he thought you would want to see.”

“Then show.” The Therapist smiled under his mask, and reached for a remote control. Then, a TV screen on the end of the room, right in front of Aapop, lit up. On it, small pictures of Pitz players began to move around a Ballcourt. One team was immediately recognizable by their uniforms : the Messidoreans. It was all the important extracts of their two previous matches in the competition, but also of their qualification phases and other previous events with their current line-up. Aapop immediately left the memories of the “acupuncture session” behind, and focused on the screen. Because from what he was seeing, the Trainer had been hard at work, digging up video files of the Messidorean team, as the Mutulese Team’s video bank probably had no file ready on such a small team. But it had paid off because from what Aapop could see, these were indeed very interesting recordings...

Matchday 4: Quarter finales, Group A

Charnea (CHR) v. Pulau Keramat (PK)

Round 1 : 2(*) - 5
Round 2 : 3 - 6(*)
Round 3 : 3(*) - 1
Total : 2 - 1

An hard fought victory for the Charneans who earn their place for the semi-finales. The Pulaui were at their best for most of the match, scoring points and Pass-Through both, but an opportunity well seized by their opponents and a mishandled start for the third round led will end up costing them the match. A sad fate for one of the best team worldwide and we hope this defeat will give them the energy and the will to do better next season !

Odarba Halad (OH) v. Uluujol (ULJ)

Total : 2 - 0

It went better than one could've expected for the Wobblies, who managed to win a round against the Mutuleses, the pay-off of their very aggressive playstyle. However, this satisfying display of Pitz happened between two very short rounds in which the Mutuleses managed to score Pass-Through without much contest by the Messidoreans. One could've thought that this second round was proof that the Belisarian team had wisened up to the Mutuleses' tactics, but it seems that it was the Court Lords who managed to find the weakness in the Wobblies defense instead. Because even if they lost the second round, their relentless playstyle made all the difference between the two teams as fatigue started to settle in much faster on the Wobblies than on their opponent and they prove unable to recover. A dangerous gamble for the Court Lords when we know that Wobblies were the team that won the longest round of this World Court. A war of attrition that mark the end of the Messidoreans time in this World Court, who nonetheless managed to stand their grounds against some of the best teams in the world today, and leave a long lasting impression on the internationale public as a whole.

Fast, furious, breathtaking, the two opposing teams were at their best today ! Incredible teamplay and exceptional actions characterized this match, which ended in the second back-to-back Pass-Through of the Competition by the All-Greens. Until the very last second, the struggle was real, and this third round may have been one of the longest of the Competition, which is saying considering there was only one set. There was a reason why tickets for this match were among the most sought after by the public, when you put two of the best world-level teams currently active against one another, what else can you expect but an exceptional display of Pitz ?

A shocking development for this sixth day of the competition ! The Charneans Revenants, against all odds and despite a very, very rough start, managed to pull it off and get two pass-through during a match in which they were, for the most part, dominated by their Odarbans counterparts. The contrast with sharp with the past performances of the Charneans in previous internationale competitions. Already people are talking of this edition of the World Court as the "Year of the Underdogs" and now we can only wonder: can the Revenants do it ? Can they win in the Finale against either the Court Lords or the All-Greens ?
