Akosa

Postby Pavirata » Tue Feb 18, 2020 8:40 pm

Artemis Application
General Information
Full Nation Name: United Free Associations of Akosa (U.F.A.)
Short Name: Akosa
Population: est. 2-3m
Brief synopsis of your nation: Akosa is a small, landlocked country of autonomous communities. It has successfully endured due to relative geographic isolation and the resilient, adaptable mountain peoples, also known as the Hill Tribes. For generations they lived in the highlands to avoid subjugation by lowland valley states, where they would be enslaved or suppressed. The current Capullist iteration, of this long tradition of self-rule, was started from revolution against the Sika Dwa Empire of the 19th Century. Akosa is considered a stateless society, based around a complex of local clan systems and participatory democracy, drawing heavily from Calpullism.
Preferred Map Location: https://i.imgur.com/EQ6CQOp.png (yellow)

Culture
What languages are spoken? Azni Twi (lingua franca)
What religions are practiced? 73% Nurab (52% Nyam Nurabi sect)
Brief description of your nation’s culture and history: The Anzi people originally settled the highlands fleeing from prosecution in the south. They became the strongest among the pre-existing Hill Tribes, forming eleven clans.

These Hill Tribes would experience profound religious influence from Nurab outcast, mostly brought by the Anzi. Forming Nyam Nurabi, a Nurab spiritualist school which syncretized indigenous with imported beliefs from the south. The Sika Dwa Empire, rising behind a Nurab helm, centralized in valleys, maintaining limited control over the mountains while forming treaties of safe passage with the Hill Tribes. Throughout the 19th century it aggressively expanded, breaking this established status quo.

Sika Dwa's reign ended with a revolution, a mix of collapse and civil war between Calpullist and Nurabi Theocrats. The Empire could not relieve recent natural disasters and the nobility had suppressed attempted popular assemblies, dissent rose. The Revolutionary Conflict lasted from 1947-1979, the land had long been divided into warring factions, but by 1979 mostly capitulated into statelessness. By 1979, Calpullist CCC-backed militia's overrun the little Nurabi and Imperialist forces left. General Akrofi, with popular support and direct aid from the powerful CCC-aligned Calpullist, was poised to install himself as a dictator, and install the Liberation Army permanently to protect the revolution.

General Akrofi, the hero of the Revolutionary Conflict, was assassinated by political opponents. Revolutionaries who opposed Akrofi's coming rule and a Calpullist state. The UFA evolved from the chaos, constructed around the ideals of mutual aid it was decentralized and officially claimed to be stateless. It expanded through its relief of the central valley, stricken with years of war, drought and isolation. Following the Akrofi era, relations with the CCC were distant and the Liberation Army was dismantled.

Government & Economy
What is the current political situation in your nation? The largest faction, the Nsase De Ho, spans the most communities across the country, wanting to maintain local clan political power and structure, striving to protect communal autonomy from state or reform advocates like the Akrofia and some Calpullist.

The Calpullist across Akosa mostly believe in a more centralized government, with close ties to CCC. They are more moderate than their god, General Akrofi, believing in more centralization to carry out Calpullist policies and organization of the country in a mass level, but not the Liberation Vanguardism of Akrofi. Among themselves the Calpullist divided into those that view a the state as a current necessity, within this view are schools that adhere to a centralized republic vs a federation. Other Calpullist believe in complete statelessness, but want to enact organizational reform, especially in regard to the clan culture.

Meanwhile there are the Akrofist, they believe in instituting a strong, technocratic state to better export 'the Revolution'.

Brief description of your nation’s government: At the lowest level there are popular assemblies, participated by the various nations and their clans/tribes. Each clan has their own dialect of Twi and holds their own land, ranging from a city(historically forming city-states) to farmland. With several clans in each, there are four regions across Akosa.

Each state is a confederacy of these clans, and the non-defined, ambiguous and mostly traditional structure of the Free Association owes to its status as a stateless society. There are central representative figures and 'celebrities' of Akosa, however they do not have prominent power.

The Executive Council is a grand coalition of all parties and specific groups(youth, ethnic minority, religious groups), the members of this participatory council are chosen by members of their party or group in their own democratic processes. The council is considered a committee for coordination merely, for the implementation of specific goals. The Executive Council also doesn't perpetually administer, only when it is called upon or necessary. (this rule is heavily bent ofc)

What is your nation’s primary industries?
What are its main exports? Imports? Mainly exports a variety of agricultural and artisanal goods, however is mostly isolated. At most a lot of machinery, appliances and pharmaceuticals are imported.
Brief description of your nation’s economic situation: A mix of a gift economy and Calpullist mutual credit system, used interchangeably by most people. The economy of Akosa is decentrally planned by cooperatives, inspired by the Calpullist as well. This lends more autonomy to the regions/states.

Military
What is the primary purpose of your armed forces? To defend the right of Free Association and Mutual Aid.
What is your military like? There is no official standing military, however efforts are organized through several local militias that cooperate in training. Together, the militia's form the Free Army. Its strategy is guerilla warfare in the instance of an invasion and making use of superior knowledge of the Akosa's rough terrain.
Brief description of your nation’s military’s capability: Very basic with second-hand, strung together equipment imported and appropriated decades ago. No airforce, or navy, just a rifle and grenade in every hand.

Diplomacy
What role do you see your nation fulfilling in the region? for now a companion to Bafeng as a fellow landlocked nation to play with. Expanded importance would be interesting, I'm open to historic interplay, as well as attempted imperialism(maybe going a graveyard of empires route).
Who are its friends and who are its rivals? Rivals: all neighbors and Pavirata most likely, Friends: CCC probably.
Brief description of your nation’s diplomatic approach: Akosa doesn't have an official posture to the world, maintaining ambiguous indifference, yet a culture of openness. Most Akosan figures are friendly to the world. Tensions may derive from economic and ideological motives, considering certain factions and groups in Akosa are also actively hostile internationally, trying to encourage a global revolution.

OOC: Hello fellows! I'm getting my own region restarted as a roleplay community, although it's open-world. Regardless, I hope we can cooperate to write some awesome stories in the future!

Artemis Application
General Information
Full Nation Name: The Free and Independent State of the Kāmohoaliʻi Islands
Short Name: Kāmohoaliʻi, the Islands
Population: 4,418,965
Brief synopsis of your nation: Angry Hawaiians (and Southern Chinese and Irish people) with a chip on their shoulder to imperial foreign powers in a gorgeous tropical island chain
Preferred Map Location: Near the equator in the western ocean -- Will post a drawing on Discord

Culture
What languages are spoken? Hawaiian, Hokkien, Mandarin, Wu, Min, Irish
What religions are practiced? The vast majority of Islanders practice an indigenous belief system syncretizing indigenous animism with religious traditions newer to the Islands, including Taoism, Buddhism, and Christianity. The degree to which each system is syncretized depends on the family history of the Islander -- some practice one religion exclusively, some two, some three, some all four.
Brief description of your nation’s culture and history: Human settlement began on the Islands roughly 1,800 years ago, with isolated fishing villages eventually evolving into complex agricultural societies. In 1307, a local chief by the name of Kailani unified the islands under her rule, styling herself as the earthly emissary of the shark god Kāmohoaliʻi. This didn't change much for the next several hundred years, with no difference in the average person's life beyond some taxes -- however, after incursions from foreign powers like Cheongmae and Keiyan, the nation was centralized in order to maintain its independence. This fierce independence evolved into isolationism, violently opposed to foreign powers and serving as refuge to those threatened by those foreign powers -- this stance was maintained until the mid-1900s, when increasing globalization threatened to leave the Islands behind. The Islanders are still very wary of most of their neighbors, choosing to stay neutral and uninvolved in most foreign affairs. This has proven to be a challenge in the past 25 years, however, as tourism has exploded and oil and metal deposits have been found on or near the Islands.

Government & Economy
What is the current political situation in your nation? Somewhat unstable but not to any great degree -- the political system tends to lead to a very blatant distinction between the ruling and lower classes, so decorum and civility are kind of jokes to most politicians, but nothing out of the normal is exacerbating tensions. The main points of disagreement are the everpresent question on how foreigners are treated, as well as to what degree and where resources like metals and oil should be extracted. Political parties tend to have nothing to do with actual political positions (e.g. Fianna Fail/Fine Gael), but most politicians are some flavor of liberal, environmentalist, right-libertarian, conservative, and anarchist.
Brief description of your nation’s government: The Godsent serves as the monarch of Kāmohoaliʻi, elected by a cabal of figures important to the nation; this generally includes government figures, with a small group of upper-class businesspeople, journalists, public figures, &c. The Godsent has a wide-ranging power, in the tradition of a standard strong presidential republic -- however, they can be recalled at any time by the People's Council, the unicameral national legislature, and replaced by a vote in the Council. Roughly half of Godsent tenures go until death, while the other half tend to end prematurely. The People's Council consists of about 800 representatives from every village and neighborhood in the nation, and can introduce its own bills and laws on a large majority, and can bypass the Godsent should the majority be big enough.
What is your nation’s primary industries? Historically whaling, agriculture, fishing and shipbuilding; currently tourism, agriculture, shipbuilding and similar heavy engineering, and limited mineral extraction and crude oil production
What are its main exports? Imports? Exports include sandalwood, sugarcane, cassava, rice, bananas, fish, shrimp, heavy equipment, and limited amounts of palladium, lithium, and crude oil; imports include everything else
Brief description of your nation’s economic situation: Stable, increased strongly in the late 1900s due to an end to isolationism; resource extraction is currently a controversial topic in local politics, with defense of local holy lands being the catalyst of several small terrorist attacks

Military
What is the primary purpose of your armed forces? The defense of the Islands and of Islanders, nothing more
What is your military like? Organized somewhat more democratically than most, with officers being elected and military college being open to anyone with at least 1 year of service, due in part to a lack of serious conflict in several centuries. Current focus is on the mitigation of internal strife and the defense of Islanders abroad. Roughly 23,000 active servicemembers, split between Navy, Air Force, Gendarmerie, Medical Corps, local militias, and an incredibly green Space Force, the former three having extensive special forces.
Brief description of your nation’s military’s capability: Limited primarily to internal peacekeeping and external special operations concerned almost solely with the safety of Islanders abroad. Known around the world for brutal special forces (comparable to Gurkhas), with some electing to act as foreign mercenaries, but a nonexistent regular military.

Diplomacy
What role do you see your nation fulfilling in the region? Nonexistent in wars not involving it or large numbers of Islanders, kind of a wildcard in actual diplomacy with an outlook stemming entirely from an anti-imperialist-to-the-point-of-xenophobic worldview. Not particularly important outside of its region.
Who are its friends and who are its rivals? Enemies are primarily large imperialist powers, notably Cheongmae in the current era, and friends are other similar anti-imperialists.
Brief description of your nation’s diplomatic approach: As stated above, mostly centering on anti-imperialism, with the only concession that would ever be given being abstention.

Out Of Character Information
What are your former/current regions? Tiandi, Ajax
What are your former/current nations? Iskail, Kaayhltaa Tlag (both Ajax)
How did you hear about Artemis? I was visiting friends at UCSD and walked to close to the Che, got jumped and woke up with this fully written
If asked to reduce the power/scope of your nation, how would you do so? My IRL mental stability relies on the power of the Islands, but I guess I could have a little more colonial influence or get rid of the resources dynamic if necessary

Yuuban

Postby GAdShAcK » Sun Apr 05, 2020 1:09 pm

Artemis Application
General Information:
Full Nation Name: Kingdom of Yuuban
Short Name: Yuuban
Population 57 million
Preferred Map Location:

Nation Information
Brief synopsis of your nation:

Yuuban means "Lords of the River" - referencing the various Ahau that originally ruled the Lakam Ha' Valley, vying for domination over one another. The Lakam Ha' [River] brings life to the remarkably arid and desertous country. Early Lakam Ha' civilizations settled along the river and within its delta, prospered greatly from their forms of agriculture; taking advantage of the rich soil along the Lakam Ha'. The current reigning "Kingdom" united in the early 20th century under K'uhul Ahau Siyah Chan Ich'ak.

Today, the monarch is titular, fallen from their former power. The current K'uhul Ahau is Bahlam Ich'ak, below him are the numerous Halach Winik, lords of the Kuchkabal(provinces), who are little more than ceremonial-religious leaders these days. Holding great power is the Chan Tah, four powerful dynastic guilds(Polum) united through a trade association. Each Polum is led by a Noh Xib'; these plutocrats comprise the de facto ruling council. Each Polum owns several conglomerates, owned by different family members. They employ the Tupil, mercenary companies, for security and defense. The Tupil themselves are divided in competing alliances of clans and though engaged in a mutual relationship with the Polum, also contest the power of the Chan Tah, the Chak Pakal is elected by this collective warrior class to represent them in the ruling council. This council is commonly known as the Sahol.

What would your nation bring to the region?

Hopefully some current interesting political and economic struggles, as well as world-building.

What are the most important aspects or focuses of your nation?

Yuuban is essentially a corpotocracy, historically it has gone through periods of fleeting unification under the K'uhul Ahau, usually ignited by that period's flavor of religious fanaticism. In the 20th century, the country unified under another powerful K'uhul Ahau, who had defeated Calpullist in a the previous War for Yuuban. Siyah engaged in extensive reform, and though a powerful figure, his death saw the collapse of the Ahau's power and uprising of the industrial capitalist class, led by the Polum.

Local lords have also lost their power and slowly, divine law gave way to a more dominant corporate law. Divided, their powered waned in the face of the growing, unified merchants. Incidentally, it's become anarcho-capitalistic, there's no regulation(outside the limits corporations set themselves) and conglomerates run the country. At the front of this, the Chan Tah, the four plutocratic dynasties derived from craft/merchant guilds, truly run the country as a 'shadow republic'.

What do you expect out of your nation, personally?

Just some interesting worldbuilding and diplomatic roleplay, some war(mostly historical).

Artemis Application
General Information:
Full Nation Name: The Tranquil State of Riena; alternatively the Riennic Isles [subject to change]
Short Name: Riena
Population: 7,525,780
Preferred Map Location: Any location deemed suitable for a humid subtropical climate, though preferably within reasonable range of active region members.

Nation Information
Brief synopsis of your nation:
Riena is an island archipelago comprising several hundred islands. Formerly a lawless haven for warring pirate warlords with individual fiefdoms, Riena underwent a period of centralisation following an attempted invasion by a foreign power, and was nominally united as a decentralised pirate federation. As the infamy of Riennii pirates grew, so too did efforts by sovereign states to crush them. Riennii warlords, threatened by the prospect of a growing international coalition, foresaw an imminent and irreversible decline in piracy and banded together to embark on a modernising drive which saw a concerted pivot towards trade, with a particular emphasis on whitewashing Riena's international reputation. This led to Riena's gradual rehabilitation as a more conventional state, and eventually its full participation as a regional player.

Modern Riena is a semi-direct democratic federal republic. It comprises seven disparate states, with each state maintaining its own devolved legislature. The Riennii federal executive is led by a seven-member Executive Council, with each state allocated a seat. Riena's economy is service-based and highly specialised, driven by regional trade as well as the information technology and tourism sectors. From a geopolitical perspective, Riena espouses a policy of broad neutrality, as is dictated by its heavy reliance on trade.

What would your nation bring to the region?
A unique nation concept that adds flavour and diversity to the region at large, and by extension, a different set of roleplay opportunities.

What are the most important aspects or focuses of your nation?
Diplomacy. By its very nature, Riena requires a network of trade and diplomatic alliances with its neighbours to survive and exert what little influence it possesses. The tarnished legacy of the Riennii pirates has the potential to add an interesting dimension to Riena's geopolitical dealings. Aside from that, I intend to take a holistic approach towards developing Riena's canon.

What do you expect out of your nation, personally?
The opportunity to write and worldbuild collaboratively within an active and dynamic region.

How did you hear about Artemis?
A quick forum search.
If asked to reduce the power/scope of your nation, how would you do so?
As conceptualised, there is very little scope for Riena's influence to be further diminished. However, I will gladly consider any representations from the region as to potential alterations; for example, if a particular niche needs to be filled.
