$52m for failing to protect moderators from 'horrors'

Facebook has agreed to pay a settlement of $52m in a court case alleging the company failed to protect workers tasked with moderating disturbing content from the grave mental health impacts of the job.

As part of the settlement, which was announced Tuesday, moderators will get a minimum of $1,000 each from Facebook with the potential for additional compensation if they have been diagnosed with mental health disorders, including PTSD.

Don't know if Max has $52M but worth a shot Mods..

There is a lot of content to moderate on FB, so it wouldn't surprise me.
Specially if you want round the clock worldwide moderation.

It'd be 52,000 mods if they all got 1,000. But it does say minimum of 1,000, so there's probably some variance in payout.

It might cover mods that have come and gone over the years, not just how many they have now.

The most reasonable way to imagine it was divvied up is $1,000 to 10,999 mods and one (un)lucky mod got $41,001,000.

Imagine if the NS Staff got all this, either due to Max diverting it from Mark, or just pure random luck.

Counting just the active staff, I counted... 24-25? That's 2 mil for each of you.

You could establish your own island with that amount. :3

True that, we only occasionally get things like gore and porn images compared to the unending torrent of that crap. But then, we're only an itty bitty, teeny tiny fraction of Facebook's size too. :lol2:

Oh there are times that brain bleach is something I desperately wanted, I just doubt it is as common here as it is on facebook.

The stuff posted here isn't that bad considering. There has been some graphic imagery that has lingered for a while in full view before being thrown into the evidence locker, but I think most Moderators have seen far worse outwith NS.

There have been a few occasions where I have seen an image posted and wished I had access to the tools to yeet it into the sun, due to there being no Mods around at the time and yet there being users browsing the thread, likely being subjected to the same image but possibly being more sensitive to them than I am.

You certainly see some weird/gory/NSFW stuff as an NS mod, but not nearly as much as Facebook mods do.
