The Pentuple Contest: Anything-But-Pandemics

Postby The Free Joy State » Fri Apr 10, 2020 11:59 pm

It's time for another issue contest!

The contest brings with it the chance of joining the team of Issue Editors. There may even be multiple winners. Everything depends on the submissions we receive.

How Do I Enter?
Enter the competition before 14th June 2020 (inclusive) by the usual method. Please tick the box marked "Issues Contest Submission" for the issues you wish to enter.

You may enter up to a maximum of three entries (that's per player, not per nation).

Please take your time over your entries. Be sure you are happy. There's no rush.

Can Anyone Enter?
Whether you've never written an issue or have written a dozen, even if you don't normally hang around in this forum, everyone's welcome to participate.

What Are You Looking For?
Broadly, an entertaining (non-pandemic related) issue that a real-world leader might face.

You can find ideas on how to do that in our guide to How to Write Issues for NationStates. You may also want to check out our Spoilers' List to see if your idea has been covered, and drop into the Writers' Block for a chat with experienced authors.

Got Issues is a valuable resource and we really recommend drafting there to improve your chances (No, it's not cheating -- just boosting the odds. And no need to worry about being plagiarised; we're very vigilant).

What Are You Not Looking For
We are not looking for any issues about pandemics. Issues about pandemics will not be entered into consideration.

We think we could probably all use something to think about other than pandemics.

Multiple Entries? That's New!
Yep. For this contest, we've decided to loosen restrictions and allow contestants multiple shots at winning.

However, a word of warning, just because you can do something doesn't mean you always should. If you can write one good issue or three so-so ones, do the good one. One well-written entry over which time is taken has a much better chance over several slapdash issues.

What Could I Win?
Winners will gain the opportunity to join the team of Issue Editors. The top ten finalists will also be revealed in a follow-up News announcement after the deadline.

What Does an Editor Do
Editors work behind the scenes to make sure the issues are the best they could be. You would learn how issues work and be expected to maintain confidentiality. It is a voluntary position, and you would work at your own pace as part of our friendly and supportive team.

What If I Win and Don't Want to be an Editor?
That's fine. We're not the 18th Century Navy. We don't press-gang people.

What Happens If I Don't Win?
If you don't win, please don't be discouraged. We are always looking for well-written issues, and even if you don't win, your issue may still make it into the game at a later date (so keep your eyes peeled).

Good luck to all entrants and Happy Issuing!

Are we allowed to revive our own drafts first published on the forum before today with the intention of submitting them in the Issues Contest, or does it not matter as long as we tick the Magic Checkbox at the end?

As long as you haven't submitted it yet, and it's not pandemic related, I don't see why not.

What if you submitted an issue already? Are you allowed to resubmit it as part of the contest?

No. Please do not duplicate an already-submitted issue.

All issues that have been submitted prior to the onset of the contest have already been processed, and some may already be in the process of being edited.

We ask that you draft and submit an entry that has not been submitted before.

Can we post drafts of our issue ideas for submission or do we have to submit them without a draft?

The News Post wrote:For drafting tips and advice, check out our issue-writing resource and the Got Issues? subforum (which is where we'd encourage you to draft your issues).

It sounds like that's a yes. And I'm pretty sure also that in the past, contest issues have been drafted here.

As said in the News post and in the OP of this thread, we'd always encourage you to draft your submission in Got Issues?.

You don't have to draft in-forum (but we'd recommend that you do draft somewhere, and take your time), but doing so could really improve your chances for success.

Are we permitted to write an issue if we have less than the required population?

That’s great! I’ve had a half-written issue laying in my drawer for a couple weeks, a fun competition is a great way to get people writing, I’m going to go finish and post on the forums now.

This is great! I've had a (somewhat sub-par) issue in the forums for a while, so I'll be able to get that in pretty quickly.

The contest last until June so you’ll be over the limit by then.

Normal issues will be reviewed as normal, if a bit slower due to greater workload due to the contest.

Same! Also hi I'm still around, just been busy with something else (a project I've been working on for six years, trying to get as much done as I can before work. Unfortunately I work in public retail and my LoA ends in a week so trying to rush to get stuff done).

I might try this, myself. I know I've got at least one I'd like to try to submit for this contest,
but even with all my other drafts up I a) can't remember most of them and b) don't know how much faith I have in those I do remember. :P

P.S. have high doubts I'll be making a brand-spanking new one anytime soon. Also hi, also this is the best birthday present.

Darn! I myself was thinking about unveiling my three-part issue chain about measles.
How could the editors allow anything other than my one truest most epic masterpiece a chance for submission?

I'm calling the contest fixed. It's a conspiracy made to oust me.

It's been less than 12 hours and we've already had 20 entries. I'm not going to comment on the quality thus far other than to say you really need to spend time properly drafting an issue before submitting it if you want to have a chance, not only to win, but get it in-game. A 5 minute rush job almost never, ever is successful (nor appreciated, and we remember names!).
