How to put on a belt?

Postby Idzequitch » Sat Mar 28, 2020 1:02 pm

Belts. They're long narrow strips of material, often made of leather, that wrap around the waist and clasp together in the front to complete the loop. When utilized correctly, belts help you keep your pants on your person, and avoid inadvertently displaying any undergarments or pieces of your anatomy that your pants normally conceal. Truly, belts are a staple of any pants-wearing society. (Some of us tried allowing our pants to start falling off, or sagging, circa 2010, but we've mostly come back to our senses as a society since then).

Now my question for you, oh wise belt wearers of NSG, stems from an encounter I had with my elderly grandfather. He, unfortunately, suffers from dementia, and he required assistance putting his belt on. My father and I both came to help, but being young and spry as I am, I arrived first. I began putting my grandfather's belt on just as I would my own belt: through the first loop to the right of the pants button, around his right hip, back behind, over to the left hip, and back to the front, essentially in a clockwise direction around his waist.

This perplexed my father greatly, who claimed that since my grandfather is right-handed, that his belt should start from his left side and loop around in a counter-clockwise direction. But I protested, because I also am right-handed, and have always gone clockwise.

So, NSG, although wearing pants is optional when posting to the forums, I come to you, trusting you to resolve this dispute between my father and I: What is the correct way to put on your belt?

It's a belt. It's a fancy leather rope meant to keep your pants up. Don't be so complicated. Just make sure that it looks sexy on you.
Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

I put mine on anticlockwise - mostly because I'm a shameless rightie.

But it definitely looks much sexier if it's put on clockwise than if it's put on the wrong way ;)

How you put on a belt will depend on what hemisphere you live on, due to the Coriolis effect.

Coriolis can't get in if you quarantine really hard.

As a cowboy who commonly makes and wears leather belts, I can confirm that the proper way to put it on if you are right handed is to start on the left and go counterclockwise.

Now that poses an interesting question: How would your belt go on if you were standing on the equator? Come to think of it, the equator is basically the Earth's belt. Does the equator wrap around in an easterly or westerly direction?

Agreed. Like I mentioned, I do make belts out of leather. And as a cowboy, I put the big cowboy belt buckles on them and stamp/stitch patterns into the belts. Any belt made by me will literally be upside down if you put it on clockwise, and it will be visibly upside down. I honestly didn’t even know putting belts on clockwise was a thing until now, and I’m seriously wondering if I’ve been discriminating towards people putting it on clockwise by not making belts for them.

Easterly. Counterclockwise. That's the direction the Earth spins and time "progresses".

How to put on a belt?

Postby East Amblewell » Sat Mar 28, 2020 1:29 pm

The best way to put on a belt is counter-clockwise but I guess anyway would work. The unacceptable way is those people who wear suspenders for the aesthetic along with their belt.

That's the main reason I made this thread. It's a topic I think probably everyone takes for granted. I certainly never thought about it until the situation with my grandfather made me consider it.

People still wear belts? Huh.

The last time I wore a belt I was, like... I don't even remember how old I was actually.
