Drinking age in your nation.

Postby Roedean » Mon Mar 23, 2020 9:26 am

What is the drinking age in your nation and why?

How strictly enforced is it?

What is the age restriction for entering bars and clubs in your nation?

What age do you have to be to sell or serve alcohol in your nation?

Is the drinking age the same as the age of majority in your nation?

Did your nation always have the drinking age it does now?

Roedean's drinking age is Twenty-One to both purchase and consume all alcoholic beverages.

It should be noted that one may enter a bar in Roedean at any age, but just not be served alcohol unless they are at least Twenty-One years of age. Also, to enter a club, one must be at least Sixteen years of age, but again, a person has to be at least Twenty-One years of age to buy alcohol.

It should also be noted that beverages containing less than 2% alcohol, as well as Chocolate Liqueurs and Industrial Ethanol are not subjected to an age restriction.

Enforcement varies depending on perceived need. Clubs and restaurants are not generally strict about carding. Bars traditionally weren't that strict either, but have started to card more in recent years. It should be noted that the requirement to card is generally waivered if the alcohol is being served with food.

Liquor stores on the other hand, are usually very strict, and will often card people no matter how old they look. The justification is that most underage drinkers will get their alcohol from liquor stores because it's where you can buy alcohol relatively cheaply and in large quantities.

It isn't illegal for a person under Twenty-One years of age to enter a liquor store just to have a look around, but of course they can't buy alcohol.

A person under Twenty-One years of age can face a fine of up to R$3,000 and/or up to twenty-eight days in jail (but no criminal record, it should be noted) if they are found to be drinking alcohol. This measure is generally only implemented when the person in question is highly intoxicated or was causing trouble while intoxicated.

Alcohol consumption by Eighteen-to-Twenty-year-olds is often tolerated in practice depending on the circumstances, although families, high schools, colleges, and employers may take action to curb underage drinking if they think it's inappropriate.

It's also against the law to knowingly furnish or supply alcohol to a person under Twenty-One years of age. This is punishable by a fine of up to R$9,000 and/or up to ninety days in jail. This penalty is seldom imposed in practice.

To sell alcohol, you have to be at least Sixteen years of age, and to serve alcohol, you have to be at least Fourteen years of age. However, to own a liquor store or other business that sells alcohol, you must be at least Eighteen years of age.

Twenty-One is the age at which you are legally considered a full adult. (Age of Majority.)

There is one important exception to the Twenty-One drinking age. According to a law that goes back centuries, a squire becomes a knight, that is, becomes a full adult, at Twenty-One years of age, or after the heroic battle. In other words, a person may be granted full adulthood early if they have served their country in battle. The modern interpretation of this law is that if a person has completed a year of military service before the age of Twenty-One, they may be granted full adulthood early, and thus be legally allowed to consume alcohol.

The drinking age was set at Twenty-One way back in about 1910 to keep drunken young men off the streets and has been largely maintained ever since.

It needs to be emphasised that our model of alcohol control is not simply a knee-jerk idea that was dreamt up in a day. Rather, it is based on decades of trial and error and experience, and has been steadily tinkered with and refined over the years. In addition to the Twenty-One drinking age, there is a total ban on the advertising of alcohol, and retail alcohol can only be sold at specialised licensed alcohol stores. This way, we can control the price and availability of alcohol.

The drinking age issue is indeed controversial, and is the topic of constant debate and scrutiny. It is generally argued that the current system should be maintained as it's effective at de-normalising alcohol, preventing drinking by teenagers, and reducing road fatalities caused by drunk driving, even though the problems of fake IDs and illicitly produced alcohol have been practically impossible to control.

The law isn't perfect, and certainly doesn't stop people under the age of Twenty-One getting hold of alcohol. It does however, make it easier for the authorities control public-order problems related to large numbers of drunken youngsters in the Fifteen-to-Twenty age range. There has also been a marked improvement in student test scores since the law was passed.

I must add that we have tended to emphasise education and indirect enforcement when it comes to the drinking age, given the practical problems and limited effectiveness of direct enforcement.

Most people study in high school until age Nineteen or Twenty, and so it's argued that people should wait until after this to start drinking alcohol as alcohol can greatly negatively impact on one's educational performance, even lead to serious addiction and personal tragedy for a young person under the age of Twenty-One. It's therefore considered to be a very bad idea to start to consume alcohol before this age. It is argued that one generally lacks the maturity to handle alcohol before the age of Twenty-One and that one's brain isn't fully developed before this age.

It should be noted that there have been many propositions over the years to lower the drinking age to Eighteen. After all, you can vote, get married, join the military, and even buy a gun at this age. However, it is feared that lowering the age to Eighteen would lead to far greater problems with public disorder caused by large numbers of drunken teenagers, and with drunken driving, which could be impossible for the authorities to control.

It is argued that with a drinking age of Twenty-One, your underage drinkers are Eighteen to Twenty years of age, but with a drinking age of Eighteen, your underage drinkers will be Fifteen to Seventeen years of age, a far more problematic age group. And so it's argued that the Twenty-One age restriction is necessary to keep alcohol out of the hands of the younger kids.

What do you think of Roedean's drinking age law? (Optional question)

What is the drinking age in your nation and why?
There are two different drinking ages in the Democratic Republic. At age 16, one can drink in private residences and at age 18, one can both drink in public and purchase alcoholic beverages.

How strictly enforced is it?
Obviously, it's rather hard to enforce the drinking age for drinking in your home home, but all businesses that sell alcoholic beverages must see some form of government ID before they can be sold to a consumer.

Also, did your nation always have the drinking age it does now?
The drinking age has been the same since 1908. Prior to this, there were no nationwide laws concerning this subject, it was dealt with on local levels.

What is the drinking age in your nation, and why?
25 because that is approximately when the brain finishes developing

How strictly enforced is it?
Strictly. Consumers are required to show an ID when purchasing alcohol, and alcohol businesses are required to own a license and register with its municipal government. Punishment for violating drinking laws includes community service and possibly time in rehabilitation. There are also extensive educational programs targetted at teens and young adults on the dangers and risks of drinking, especially when their brain isn't fully developed.

Also, did your nation always have the drinking age it does now?
No, it used to be 18 until neuroscience discovered the brain finishes developing around the age of 25.

What is the drinking age in your nation and why?
The Federation of Lillorainen doesn't have a legal drinking age. Mostly because Lillos are secretly still a wild bunch of Vikings Lillorainen and her predecessor states simply never bothered with that.

How strictly enforced is it?
Enforcing a nonexistent minimum age is kind of hard ... Lillorainen is much reliant on common sense in this regard; hardly anyone would let a cub buy booze in a shop or pub. As a kind of cultural custom, Lillorainians typically have their first beverage (usually beer) between the ages of 11 and 14, usually with their families, and the latter is usually the age going out for a drink becomes common.

What age do you have to be to sell or serve alcohol in your nation?
While there is no explicit minimum age for selling or serving alcohol, the legal working age (which would be 12 with parental permission and limited to easy work, 15 for part-time work of all sorts, and 16 without any restrictions) would be the logical threshold.

Also, did your nation always have the drinking age it does now?
Pretty much so.

Since Lillorainen's geography is currently being overhauled a 'tiny' bit, most information on it posted before December 12, 2018, is not entirely reliable anymore. Until there's a new, proper factfile, everything you might need to know can be found here. Thank you. #RetconOfDoom (Very late update, 2020/08/30 - it's still going on ...)

How strictly enforced is it? Very strictly enforced.

Also, did your nation always have the drinking age it does now? Yes, since gaining independence in 1961.

What is the drinking age in your nation and why?
16. It’s the age you are considered an adult, and as such you get the rights of an adult.
How strictly enforced is it?
Pretty strictly. About 70% of our population either has been in the military or is in the military, so the parents do most of the enforcing for us. Kids listen to their parents here, especially when their parent is a badass war veteran.
Also, did your nation always have the drinking age it does now?
Not always. There used to not be a drinking age.

18 to consume and buy on your own, 16 with parental or guardian to consume.

Those who are buying and look under 18 need to show I.D.
Also, did your nation always have the drinking age it does now?
Until 1919 there was no legal age limits on consuming or buying alcohol.

Teens have difficulty maturing their brain but we want people who experience sadness in their lives to do what they want so we have the age of 20 as a reasonable compromise the minimum to drink alcohol.

18 for the "hard" stuff (vodka, rum, whiskey, etc), 16 for wine and beer. These are the age requirements for purchasing alcohol—there's no minimum age for drinking it. In addition, drinking in public is legal, and there's no such thing as "open container laws". That said, if you're drunk and causing trouble, don't expect white-glove treatment from the cops.

Wheatonleks doesn’t have a drinking age because as our denonym pronounces, we are free men, free from statist tyranny imposing itself on individuals and the free market they make up, and children are free men as well, with an alcoholic market speicically catered to them, with flashy commercials and mascots for different brands such as “Budweiser The Beaver” or “Captain Morgan,” and children and everyone else are happier for it.

How strictly enforced is it?
None at all

Also, did your nation always have the drinking age it does now?
No, once we suffered under the yoke of statist tyranny, but no longer! We are free men now!

What is the drinking age in your nation and why?
The drinking age is 16 for beverages with an alcohol content below 15% and 18 for higher percentages. The low minimum age for weaker drinks reflects Danavaria's traditionally relaxed attitude to alcohol - people are presumed to start drinking at around that age anyway so it's seen as sensible to at least make it legal and open.
How strictly enforced is it?
It has become much stricter in recent years, though still less so than the UK or US. Shops and bars are expected to ask for the ID of anyone who looks under 20, though many still don't bother enforcing it.
Also, did your nation always have the drinking age it does now?
No. Until 1996, the legal age was 16 for all drinks. This was changed due to fears of a rise in "binge-drinking" culture.

What is the drinking age in your nation and why? The drinking age in Brilliania is 21. The age is set based off scientific evidence that alcohol consumption below that age is harmful for development. There are societal taboos against consumption of alcoholic beverages.

How strictly enforced is it? Alcoholic beverages are only allowed to be sold in state monopoly stores which have extremely strict ID checking rules as all people buying beverages must have their ID card or passport checked. They also limit the amount of beverages one can buy at one time. Entry to these stores is strictly enforced and the stores are continuously monitored. Police has the power to arrest people who drink in public, produce illegal drinks, or sell beverages clandestinely without a permit (which are hard to obtain). Bars require total adherance to strict rules in order to sell alcoholic beverages on their premises. All forms of alcoholic beverage advertisements are banned. Causing lethal harm while driving intoxicated is punished by death sentence.

Also, did your nation always have the drinking age it does now? The current drinking age was introduced in 1980. Between 1956 and 1980, the drinking age was 18, which was increased as part of the Addictive Substances Law of 1980. Prior to 1956, all consumption of alcohol was banned.

Note: The Addictive Substances Law set a 40-year term of expiration for the state monopoly store system, which may be extended by parliamentary vote for another 40 years.

What is the drinking age in your nation and why?

16 in private,18 in pubs and the like, and 21 if driving a car.

How strictly enforced is it?

Quite strict. If someone gets drunk, crashes a car, and someone dies or is permanently paralysed as a result, then the perp is executed. Pubs/clubs who give alcohol to those 17 and younger lose their alcohol license for a whole year if caught (or for just two months if there is a guilty plea.)

Also, did your nation always have the drinking age it does now?

It has had the drinking age it has now for over 40 years.

Some provinces require that a person be 18 to consume alcohol with others prohibiting adults from purchasing alcohol for those who are underage

You can drink beer, cider or wine when you are 15 if you are at home or in a restaurant with an adult (parent or responsible person).

Otherwise 18 is the legal drinking age.

Imperial society is a society of casual alcoholics. The drinking age is whenever a parent feels comfortable with providing wine to their children. On average this starts at around eight. There is a prohibition on the sale of alcoholic beverages and substances to anyone who is not of the age of majority, which is twenty-four. Consumption is not regulated.
