Is it one of your allies? Officially, Appalachia avoids alliances. However, it maintains close diplomatic ties with the United States, largely to serve as a counteracting force to the Confederacy, with which Appalachia has a very contentious relationship.
Is it an enemy? No. Appalachia seceded during the early 1970s, a very chaotic time in our timeline. Unlike the Confederacy, the remnant United States has not expressed a desire to reconquer territory lost to Appalachia.
Do you trade with it? Yes, they are our largest trading partners. Appalachia primarily exports coal, and imports a significant portion of its oil as well as a wide range of manufactured goods from the United States.

The US, at this point named "The Remnant" is also led by a monarchy with cybernetic attachments, allowing an individual to live for around 400 years. So in a way yes, but also wildly different.
