Coronavirus Thread mark II: Official Apocalyptic Edition

Postby Greater vakolicci haven » Sat Mar 21, 2020 8:49 am

Hello there everybody!
The coronavirus thread is reaching 500 glorious pages of discussion, so I thought I'd go create the new one. A link to the old one can be found here:
viewtopic.php?f=20&t=480001

As the world goes into lockdown, as politics turns truly crazy, as the stockmarket sinks and Eurovision gets cancelled (by the far the worst of the 4), Nationstates forever goes on, so we can discuss what to do about the other things. If you like live feeds that count up the dead like some morbid census, you can find a great one here:
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/
Right now, at the start of coronavirus thread 2, there were 11949 deaths. With a vaccine likely to take up to a year to develop, it isn't getting any better soon.

So now, let's chat about this years 'we're all gonna die' moment.

I really dont know how much more of this we can take. Our economy is in a recession and they're warning that we may be heading for a depression, and people are dying out there.

Why get out the locks and chains when you can get out the whips and chains?

No no don't do that. In true coronavirus response style, confuse everybody by keeping both threads open so nobody knows where they're supposed to post.

You need the locks in case the police come. Or the chains aren't secure enough.

Sir, the quarantine units are slowly making their way. We must ensure the safety of our users since it can spread through the internet :p

But I kid you not, one of my dad's girlfriend's co-workers literally asked when the Coronavirus is going to infect her computer...

And what if a “suppression” strategy of school closures, restaurant shutdowns, home quarantines, bans on gatherings of more than a few people, and other methods of social distancing lasts 18 months — the estimate of how long it might take to develop and distribute a safe and effective vaccine?

In that case, we are looking at a century-defining calamity that could bankrupt the government; wreck nearly every business in America, large or small; disrupt supply chains and create critical shortfalls of food, medicines, and other essential items; lead to dramatic increases in deaths of loneliness and despair; tempt political leaders, including the president, to disavow democratic norms in the name of public health (including by seeking to postpone elections); and create widespread, perhaps deadly, civil unrest.

The article is a lot longer, but I liked this part enough to copy it.
