[TURTLESHROOM II]

The Top Twenty Billboard ranking system comes and goes, but there is one song that stands above all others.

The song "Sixteen Tons", most famously sang by the foreign Tennessee Ernie Ford, is synonymous with the country and its working class. Every TurtleShroomer knows it. It is used to teach foreigners English. It is used to lull offspring to sleep. It is the song of working freemen and convicts in chains.

Written in 1947 AD, tbe song was first admitted into TurtleShroom in 1955 AD, with the Ford version being the first. Its approval by the Holiness Board of Censors took mere hours, both as a clean song and a political song. The Grandmaster of Decency at the time, known to be a classical progressive, at the time famously added: "to these lyrics TurtleShroom's captains of industry will burn".

This was shortly after the scandals surrounding Congressional corruption during the process of banning organized labor, and shortly after the landmark TS Supreme General Court case ruling that mere same-sex attractions cannot be criminal acts. TurtleShroom was under Fascist rule at the time, and the Fascist Servant Party delayed the release of the song for seventy-two hours in order to demand the Board review it.

His prophetic statement came true during the TurtleShroomian Civil War and the various Marxists incursions before and since. TurtleShroom's centuries of continued suppression of concessions to workers against businesses, hardline capitalist stances, elimination of striking and industrial action, and most famously, the retention of the truck system (the company store mentioned in "Sixteen Tons") have maintained the song in the mind of every creature in TurtleShroom to this day.

No song has been covered more, published so widely, accepted so uniformly, or found so many uses as "Sixteen Tons". With the conclusion of the Civil War and its use by Marxists of every stripe and general disgruntled labor rioters, movements to specifically ban its publication and distribution in the upcoming Constitution have been considered. Political dissent cannot be banned unless the Constitution itself makes a specific and explicitly defined exception. They are not expected to succeed.
