Zhouran currently has the largest television media industry in Asia and second largest in the world, behind only that of the United States. Within the nation's television industry, there are four state broadcasters along with numerous privately-owned broadcasting companies. Zhouran's massive television media industry is known for producing various very-high budget, big-rating, award-winning television shows each year such as drama shows, variety shows, and cartoon shows.

Television in Zhouran started on May 15, 1931 during the first experimental mechanical-television broadcast. Experimental all-electronic television broadcasting began on June 21, 1936 with regular all-electronic television broadcasting launched on February 13, 1937 while the last mechanical television broadcasts ended in late 1939. Regular nationwide television broadcasting was suspended on October 24, 1955 due to the Zhouranese Civil War. While local regional television broadcasting continued intermittently, regular nationwide television broadcasting was not fully-restored until December 10, 1960.
Color television broadcasts began with regular full-color transmissions being introduced on February 15, 1968, followed by the introduction of permanent full-time nationwide full-color service on August 26, 1975.
From November 3, 1967 until late 2007, Zhouran used Phase Alternating Line (PAL), which is a color encoding system used for analogue television. On September 4, 2007, the switchover from PAL to Digital Video Broadcasting — Terrestrial (DVB-T) digital television broadcast standard, which started in early 2007, was completed. As of 2020, the official terrestrial broadcasting standard in Zhouran is Digital Video Broadcasting — Second Generation Terrestrial (DVB-T2), with implementations started in early 2011 and finished on February 18, 2012.
Since the transition from analogue television to digital television, all television broadcasts in Zhouran are in digital format, following the end of analogue transmissions on December 4, 2011. Television content is delivered via terrestrial, satellite and cable, as well as Internet-streaming.
Cable television was introduced to Zhouran on April 12, 1965, and by 1975, cable television became the preferred method of receiving television in the country. Digital cable television services began on August 13, 1996 using Digital Video Broadcasting — Cable (DVB-C). As of 2020, the official cable broadcasting standard in Zhouran is Digital Video Broadcasting — Second Generation Cable (DVB-C2) since June 24, 2016. Analogue cable television services were switched off by December 4, 2011 as part of the switchover from analogue television broadcast to digital television broadcast.
Satellite television was introduced to Zhouran on June 21, 1979, and by 1981, satellite television was well established in the country. Digital satellite broadcasts in Zhouran began on November 17, 1995 using Digital Video Broadcasting — Satellite (DVB-S). As of 2020, the official satellite broadcasting standard in Zhouran is Digital Video Broadcasting — Satellite — Second Generation (DVB-S2) since July 23, 2007, along with Digital Video Broadcasting — Satellite — Second Generation — Extended (DVB-S2X) since May 9, 2016.
Digital terrestrial television was introduced to Zhouran on November 22, 1998 using Digital Video Broadcasting — Terrestrial (DVB-T). In early 2007, the country began replacing Phase Alternating Line (PAL), which was the official analogue terrestrial broadcasting standard in the country since November 3, 1967, with DVB-T as part of the switchover from analogue television broadcast to digital television broadcast. By September 4, 2007, the switchover was complete and DVB-T became the official digital terrestrial broadcasting standard while analogue terrestrial television services were switched off by December 4, 2011 as part of the switchover from analogue television broadcast to digital television broadcast. As of 2020, the official terrestrial broadcasting standard in Zhouran is Digital Video Broadcasting — Second Generation Terrestrial (DVB-T2), with implementations started in early 2011 and finished on February 18, 2012.
High-definition television (HDTV) sets became available in Zhouran in early 1999 and dedicated HDTV broadcasts began on August 21, 1999. By early 2008 to late 2009, all television networks in the country had fully-transitioned to high-definition broadcasting.
Internet-streaming digital media players were introduced to Zhouran in early 2008 and dedicated Internet-streaming television services began on October 15, 2008. Since late 2013 to early 2015, all television networks in the country provide television content for Internet-streaming television services.
Television services in the country consists of a collection of free-to-air, free-to-view and subscription services over a variety of distribution media. As of 2020, there are currently up to 2,550 television broadcast stations in the country, of which 800 are operated by state-owned broadcasters under the supervision of the National Media Administration, while 1,750 are local regional stations. Around 97.5% of households in the country own television sets with each household owning at least one television set, around 63.5% of households watch through Internet-streaming, 16.4% through terrestrial, 10.8% through satellite, and 9.3% through cable.
