After the Legends, A New Tale of the Round Table (OOC) OPEN

Postby SaintB » Sun Feb 02, 2020 12:31 am

History and Lore Thread
In Character Thread

In the year of our Lord 540, Arthur Pendragon, High King among Britons, has been gone for 20 long years. Those 20 years have not been kind to the Britons nor to the island we call our home. In the west our people have fallen into the old and bad ways, making war upon themselves and fighting for the scraps that remain of Arthur's great Britonic Empire; each of the Kings trying to take more for themselves at the expense of their kinfolk. In the east a never ending tide of Saxons pours in from the North Sea to lay siege to our once mighty kingdoms with great vigor and form new realms of their own. Across the channel to the south our people have taken to calling themselves Bretons and have become less and less interested in the affairs of their homeland.

The mighty city at Camelot is already naught but ruins. Gone is Merlin, gone is the Siege Perilous and the brotherhood of warriors that sat as equals and protected all of Briton lands, gone is the legendary sword Excalibur, gone is the bond of friendship between Briton, Gael, and Pict. But not all hope is lost. The blood of Arthur's knights still flows through the veins of worthy descendants. Warriors, farmers, traders, even princes and princesses all carry the blood of Britons valiant heroes. It is time for the old legends to end and new legends to be formed...

After the Legends is a psuedo-historical fantasy RP set in the middle of 6th Century Britain. It's an extension of the Arthurian tales and inspired by world history and Le Morte De Arthur. The world of this RP has elements of both the real world and the fantastic world of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round table blended together into a fictionalized version of Dark Age Britain full of the real dangers of war, famine, and foreign invasion, and the fantastical dangers of witches, sorcerers, faeries, and warriors carrying magical artifacts that push their prowess to near superhuman levels.

Players will fill the shoes of a descendant of a Knight of the Round Table but they don't necessarily have to be a mighty warrior the same as their father or grandfather, because after all, family fortunes change. Where their grandfather may have been the chieftan of a small town, you may be a dirt poor farmer or a refugee who was dispossessed and sent fleeing ahead of a murderous Saxon warband, you may be a merchant seeking to peddle wares and earn a fortune or at least a full belly, you could be a scholarly monk who spent much of his life, a traveling bard who sings tales in a new noble court every night, or whatever you can imagine, I leave it mostly up to you. The story will begin with a meeting of strangers; is it coincidence or is it destiny?

Rules
The Golden Rule: Fun is MANDATORY!
1. Read all of the rules here and in the character app section before making an application.
2. No godmodding. Godmodding is here defined as taking actions on behalf of other players without their prior consent, taking massive world changing actions without clearance from myself, and assuming that your attempt to affect another player will automatically succeed.
3. Treat each other with respect in the OOC. If you are obnoxious or habitually rude to other players I reserve the right to cull you from this RP and its OOC.
4. Follow all the site rules. If you are violating the site rules in my IC or OOC I will call the wrath of mod down upon you as well as erase your existence in this RP.
5. Profanity, nudity, and violence, are all perfectly fine but make sure to keep things PG13. If you think Hollywood would give it an R rating then tone things down.
6. My decisions are law.
7. In my absence the decision of my Co-OPs is law.
8. Metagaming is bad, just because a player knows something does not mean their character does. Don't fall into that trap.
9. Try to keep your post to a paragraph (3-5 sentences) long at the minimum, exceptions can apply to dialogue.
10. You are not a one man army. You character is mortal, they can die, and if they take stupid risks they can suffer stupid penalties up to and including stupid deaths.
11. Please try to be active, even if you can't be in the IC hang out in the OOC or let me know about any leave of absence you might have to take.[/blocktext}

Q & A/Announcement Board

Postby SaintB » Sun Feb 02, 2020 12:31 am

Anouncements
Feb 2, 2020 I will launch an IC for this RP on February 9th, or when I think I have sufficient players to begin. If you have Discord you can join me and others on the Discord server, send a telegram for a link.
Feb 2, 2020 So that I'm not spamming the OOC with new stuff all the time I am compiling information on history, culture, and lore in a a thread of its own located here.
Feb 5, 2020 I am finally going over applications in earnest, thank you for your patience. Kyraina will be a Co-OP in this RP and has done a lot of work to help me flesh out the overall arc for the story of this RP.
Feb 10, 2020 pictures in the Lore thread are delayed because of image hosting issues. I'm also delaying the IC while apps get sorted out.

Questions and Answers
I always add a Q & A Section to my OOCs, I find it means I don't need to answer questions over and over.

Q: Would the descendants of the knights have to be knights themselves or they could do other things? And what's the status of magic/races?
A: No, the children and grandchildren of Arthur's Knights don't need to be knights themselves, or even trained to fight. As for magic, it will be in the RP but usually in subtle and not so obvious ways aside from potentially some famous magical objects of myth. The RP isn't going to be Tolkienesque high fantasy and there will not be fantasy races like elves, gnomes, and things.

Q: I was wondering, what parts of this are "fantasy" and what parts are "history"? That is, where does this RP sit on a spectrum between King Arthur: Legend of the Sword-style "adaptation of Arthurian romance in a fictional setting that only resembles Britain" and Warlord Chronicles-style "historical fiction that attempts to tell a plausible 'real story' of King Arthur". Like I've noticed you used the historical name "Lundein" rather than London, but Merlin is called Merlin, not Myrddin.
A: Obviously all the stuff connected to Arthur is fantastical. He will have been a Brythonic King with a magical sword who ruled the Britons, defeated the Saxons severely enough to make them stay away, and had his knights and wizards and et-all. He'll have pulled The Sword of Peace from the stone to become a prophesied king, quested for the Holy Grail, and met the same fate he does in most legends. The events in the RP will also be fantasy of a lower less magical sort because real magic is on its way out after Merlin and Morgana are gone.
As for the names, Lundein was controlled by a Saxon 'kingdom' at the time the RP is taking place and I decided to go with the more anglicized and familiar names for the Arthurian characters but try to use age appropriate place names.

Q: Fae Witches and such, are we going by a fantastical sense or a more grounded sense?
A: Kind of more grounded. once Merlin, Oberron, and Morgana are gone magic as an art is pretty close to lost. Most 'magicians' are just educated people or charlatans. There are a few people who can weave a few spells, but nothing super dramatic. They'd probably be exhausted if they were to cast a DnD cantrip kind of spell. The majority of magic will come from artifacts.

Q: So we're the direct descendants of the KoRT?
A: The characters are of the bloodline of one of the knights of the Round Table. You can pick some of the famous ones, or make one up; in the RP Arthur ruled for 40 years and had hundreds of knights elevated to the round table at one point or another.

Q: Historically, Latin and Roman culture, in general, persisted in Britain until after the total subjugation by the Saxon. You mentioned that the Britons went back to their old ways, but I'm assuming Latin and the nascent British Roman language still exist?
A:
What I meant by "the old bad ways' after Arthur's death was back to individual kingdoms acting in their own self interest first as opposed to the interest of all Britons as they had done under the leadership of Arthur. Under Arthur the Britons were united under his rule and while each kingdom was separate they were united to the cause of protecting each other. After Arthur is gone that central leader figure is left void and so the kingdoms drift apart. I mention that Powys skirmishes with Dummonia from time to time over the right to get tribute from a chain of smaller kingdoms between them, and the political rivalry with Gwynned and Rheged. Those are examples of what I meant. The Latin is still widely spoken among the upper classes of Briton society but its died out among the commoners save where its become part of the Brythonic lexicon.

Q: What are the absolute limits on magical abilities? I'm not asking about being able to call fire from the heavens but is this closer to how magic works in Lord of the Rings, which is more "technology" based? You mentioned artefacts but does that exclude small conjuration?
A:
I'm still trying to decide what kind of limits I'm placing on magic... I might restrict the use of conjuring to NPCs, but I will grant the players use of magic by finding enchanted artifacts from Pre-Roman and Arthurian times when I think its appropriate. The Sword of Peace is an artifact that will show up VERY early for example, but someone would need to earn the right to be worthy of it through RP. The sword White Hilt, and Arthur's invisibility cloak are also potential artifacts.

Q: At least one character is a female warrior. What are the limits of female knights?
A:
There is no requirement for any of the characters to be a knight. Celtic society in general was rather more permissive to women than Rome was as things went and while it may be a stretch, for the sake of RP I'm allowing it permissible for a woman to be a warrior, especially if she can keep her own.

NS Name: James
Character Name: Peredur, Son of Lohengrin
Culture: Briton
Gender: Male
Biography:After the death of Arthur at the hands of Mordred, it did not take long for the Round Table to scatter from Camelot. One of the knights who stayed the longest, however, was Percival. The young knight, a man of virtue who had learnt the importance of kindness through the Fisher King, had been raised to the knighthood from relatively humble birth by Arthur. Arthur had seen in him a man of humility, and this humility is what Percival brought to the table. Even in Arthur’s death, Percival hoped that his empire would survive, to be ruled by a successor. But the power behind the throne, the knights, faltered one by one, and in the end, Percival was the last to leave the Table Round.

The knight returned to Corbenic, the keep the Fisher King had left him after his death. From Corbenic, Percival sought to recreate in small scale what Arthur had done for the whole of Britain. Percival was fair in the rule of his lands, and welcomed many refugees from the plundering of the Saxons, but he was no warrior of great renown. He managed to keep his own lands safe, but could not rise to meet any greater threat, and as such withdrew himself from British politics to care solely for his own lands, keeping a little bit of Arthurian Britain alive. This, of course, was impossible. Without the commerce and protection emanating from Camelot, the lands of Corbenic fell in disrepair, and its peasants withdrew to subsistence farming.

Long before the death of Arthur, upon first accepting the knighthood, Percival had married Blanchefleur who had given birth to a son, Lohengrin. Lohengrin had fought in the final battle and was with his father when Arthur died. Lohengrin had returned to Corbenic first, hoping Percival could keep the knights together, but he was there when his father returned soon after. Taking upon himself the title of Swan Knight, Lohengrin was charged with protecting the innocent from Saxon armies in the east, and roving pagans in the west. With time, his army whittled down, able to defend less and less, until he was defeated by a Saxon host. His body was never recovered.

Shortly after the death of Arthur, Lohengrin himself was granted a son. While his father was on campaign, the boy was raised by his grandfather, who taught him the lessons of his own childhood and adventures abroad. He told him the stories of the Knights, of the Fisher King and the quest for the Grail, and how Arthur had created an empire of conscience and peace. This young boy, Peredur, grew up amazed by the stories of Arthur. He was quick to learn to read and write, even though that skill was rapidly fading away in the general population, and read many of the old books that Percival had gathered in his library. Peredur was especially interested in theology, questions of right and wrong, and law.

While he became a knight, he never was a great warrior. He was more of a scholar and an adjudicator, and when the time came, he travelled the villages around Corbenic to speak justice in his father’s name. He collected the many ancient rules the people lived by, and wrote them down so that people could know what rules applied for certain actions. Then, one day, he bade his grandfather farewell. Inspired by what he had seen around Corbenic, he wanted to create a similar book of laws for the entirety of Britain, one that all true Britons could follow. In his mind, it would be the first step in reuniting the different kingdoms of Britain into one empire. This empire would not be an empire of a man, but an empire of laws, where the soul of Arthur would still rule from beyond the grave. Thus, he set out, leaving his ageing grandfather behind to learn the ways of the world.
RP Example: viewtopic.php?p=36657349#p36657349
Possessions: Lamellar armour, crested helm, an oval scutum with his father’s crest, a spatha and a spear, a dagger, a quill and parchment, a trusty saddle horse.

NS Name: Ubaria
Character Name: Cadeyrn, Son of Leofric
Culture: Briton
Gender: Male
Biography: The Knights of the Round Table had faded to legend. Fact to fable in a matter of decades and the lands they had once held had fallen to ruin. With the threat of invasion ever present from foreign invaders. the knights had gone their separate ways to forge a path beyond their legend and most faded into anonymity, opting to live in recluse or perhaps a more quiet life. Tristan wasn't such a Knight. Tristan had been one of Arthur's most loyal knights and had accompanied him on numerous expeditions, most notably the hunt for the Holy Grail.

Tristan's time before he had met Arthur had been wrought with hardships though, as his liege lord was King Mark of what is now known as Cornwall. Tristan was Mark's royal protector and also, his nephew, the young knight was quick with his blade and even quicker with his wit, something that would prove useful in the years to come. Mark had arranged a marriage with the Queen of Ireland's daughter, Iseult the Young and the ceremony was to take place in Cornwall, however there had been some complications. The legendary Irish Warrior, Morholt, saw this marriage as an opportunity to extort a tribute from the Cornish king and did so without hesitation. This resulted in a battle when Tristan came to the aid of his Uncle and the two dueled it out, Tristan ultimately proving victorious by driving his blade through his opponent's skull, though not before the Irish warrior wounded Tristan in the leg with a poison coated dagger.

Time was short yet Tristan wanted to uphold his knightly vow to his liege and offered to travel to Ireland to retrieve his Uncle's bride and bring her back. It just so happened that Iseult was a skilled healer, managing to reverse the effects of the deadly poison. However the cocktail of herbs and medicines would also induce a strong attraction between the two, causing them to fall madly in love with one another but still, Tristan wanted to uphold his promise and continued the journey to deliver Iseult for the wedding. Over the course of several years, the two continued to meet eachother in secret, behind the backs of noblemen, stewards and of course the King himself. This resulted in a child which Tristan named Leofric, though it was to be a short introduction as the pair knew that if Leofric were to ever be found out to be the lovechild between the two, it would mean certain death for the child and indeed, themselves. Luckily, one day a merchant caravan was passing through the keep and Tristan managed to smuggle the child over to a pottery trader, even giving the man a large sum of gold to keep the secret to himself.

Not soon after, Tristan and Iseult's adulterous affair was bought into the light after a maid found them together in Iseult's chambers. Tristan admitted the truth immediately, his Uncle however was not appreciative of his honesty and ordered Tristan to be hanged at first light and for Iseult to be locked away in her chambers for her crimes. Later that morning, Tristan managed to escape his binds and slipped the guards and instantly went to free Iseult from her prison. Both of them managed to escape into the forests, living for several weeks off berries, roots and whatever Tristan could catch with his hands though eventually, the pair were found by a hunting party and bought back to be executed. Mark however, over the weeks had a change of heart, seeing the devotion and love they had for one another he decided to spair them both, one one condition. Tristan was to leave the country and never return, he did so with honor but was drawn back several years later due to his commitments with Arthur.

Leofric however had been taken west, to the town of Durnovia where he was raised by the merchant and his family, who never told him of his real origin, fearing he would attempt to seek out his father to his own detriment. Instead, he became quite a talented merchant like his adoptive father, mainly staying in the family business of pottery and ceramics. Leofric himself sired a child with his wife Fraya. Caydern. The three lived in Durnovia and occasionally traveled to trade with the various other tribes in the area.

One night, whilst camping beside a river, their small caravan was preyed upon by a band of Saxon raiders. Leofric managed to sound the alarm and urged a young Caydern to escape, using the mask of darkness to slip away. For months, Caydern wandered the countryside, eating what he could and catching birds to eat and sleeping in ditches until a group of knight-errants came upon him in an abandoned abbey one evening. Eventually, after some persuasion, the knights agreed to take him in and educate him whilst they traveled from court to court, offering their services. Caydern learned how to wield a blade, write with a quill, hunt effectively and other various crafts of the trade.

With Saxon raids increasing, Caydern found work protecting farms and villages from attack, often moving from place to place with his group until he parted on good terms, wishing to seek out to start a life for himself. Eventually however, fate would soon decide to pay him a visit.

App is looking pretty darn good, we should elaborate on the gear a bit though. His armor, is it mail, lamellar, a gambeson? Plate mail is farther away from the people of 540 than it is from us in the modern day. How about your sword? Is it a spatha style weapon after the roman pattern, or the more modern style migration period weapon? I'm not picking just trying to make sure its all hashed out.

Walking with a more determined step than usual, he snatched his axe from the splitting block as if it were a needle from a pin cushion. The cries we’re getting closer as he rounded the giant oak tree he had marked for removal only days ago.
Further along the path Woodrow spotted a large gray wolf laying in the middle of it. He slowed down and more wolves were beginning to howl now. He saw that the wolf’s leg was badly injured and realized the large beast is what woke him. As he neared the wolf sat up a bit and growled low at him warning him. Woodrow persisted though. Opening his satchel and pulling dried meat from it. The injury came from a barbed snare wrapped around most of the wolf’s hind leg. This angered the woodsman as he had been in the forest with these wolves all his life.
The wolf showed his teeth as Woodrow extended his hand out with the dried meat, offering it to his injured neighbor. The wolf ate the meat and allowed the woodsman closer as he knew the man wouldn’t hurt him. The other wolves watched close by, the man could not see them. A few pieces of the meat later and he felt like it was time to remove the barbed snare. Woodrow reached in and the only layer it’s head on the cool earth. The wolf cried out as he unwrapped the snare. The pack circled all around now making noises and Woodrow could hear them well.
As he finished with the injury, he put some moss he had chewed up on the wound. The large animal sprang up as the woodsman sat on the ground. The wolf ran off into the trees with the others and Woodrow planned a trip to the hunters camp in the nearby area for a drink.

NS Name: Anowa
Character Name: Ser Geldwine the Arbitrator, Son of Gingalain; Son of Gawain, Prince of Powys.
Culture: Britonnic
Gender: Male
Biography: Born in the year of our Lord 512 to Gingalain and Esmeree, King and Queen of Powys respectively. His early life was far from that of the untitled commonfolk, he was an educated lad, taught in war and in academics, excelling in both, but showing a more marked interest in the academical side of things. A majority of his life was spent in Wales, where the younger man would spend most of his time sightseeing and simply taking notes on the various wildlife and flora around his home. Constantly teased by his elder brother, Gavin for spending more time as a maid than a man. Over time the two brothers would grow distant, their own wishes and destinies pulling them further apart than brothers should, eventually, they stopped speaking almost entirely, never visiting one another except when formally needed.

Gingalain would die early in Geldwine's life, a consequence of a sickness that Geldwine himself couldn't find an answer to, leaving Gavin to lead Wales as Geldwine continued his life of scholarly pursuits, taking down poultices, animals, disease and miasma, now as a man. He would make a name for himself as a fair mediator wherever he went, and regardless of what or who he was involved with, from the Picts to the Bretons, to the Franks and Saxons, the capacity he had for knowing such a variety of languages aided in such dealings where he would receive the somewhat unofficial title of 'The Arbitrator'

It wasn't until his journey to the far north of Pictish lands in 533 did he find a peculiar sight on the coast. A young girl, not aged anymore than 12, firing flaming arrows into rafts, floating away from the sight of a grisly shipwreck. Geldwine, for once, found someone who did not speak a tongue he knew. Geldwine, inspired by chivalric tales of his father and grandfather, knew his duty. For the next three days, he would aid the girl in her odd rituals with the ships's now dead crew. It seemed she was the only survivor. When the task was done, the girl seemed aimless, lost on what to do, where to go. Geldwine had been taught better than to let a child loose in the wild, much less a little girl.

For nearly three months, no one saw hide nor hair of Geldwine, many thought him dead, back home, word arrived of his supposed passing, and there was a period of mourning. His brother, now King, was greatly distraught over a lack of reconciliation, and widening distance between the brothers. However Geldwine was not dead, but still residing at the site of the shipwreck, caring for and teaching the girl the best he could, and in turn, being taught some by the girl. Eventually, the duo set out back for Geldwine's home in Wales.

News of Geldwine being alive reached Wales before the man himself did, and when King Gavin had heard of such news, he rode out for his brother himself. They would meet near to Hadrian's wall, and it was there that the brothers of Gingalain reconnected after some time apart, and now, remain as close as they did in childhood. The appearance of a strange girl with Geldwine lead to rumors through multiple courts over where exactly she had come from. Was Geldwine wedded? Was the child a witch in disguise? Was she the reason for the Arbitrator's disappearance? many questions, yet, few answers. Never officially giving an answer for fear of the uneducated thinking her a saxon, Geldwine simple lived as he had before, only this time with a charge, who, over time learned the name of: Siv.

It has been 8 years hence. And now, destiny has once again taken grasp of the duo, leading them to a chance encounter.

NS Name: Anarcho
Character Name: Yrsa Njalsdotter

Culture: Norse/Geatish
Gender: Female

Biography: In the dark days of the lastest age, there lived a northman by the name of Njal Torssen. His origins were unknown, save that the red headed giant of a man claimed to be the son of the Thunderer himself. He first emerged from the woodlands of the Daneland as early as 480, or as late as 510. He claimed to be an adventurer, a dragonslayer, and a warrior beyond equal. The Saxons he met did not see a reason to argue when he was so willing to join them in their migration and conquest of the lands across the western sea. Upon arrival in West Seaxe, he proved himself time and again, becoming a feared raider and military leader. Njal was not just these however, and proved his intellect and cunning on numerous occaisons. He even learned Brythonic from his prisoners, though his accent was notoriously hard to understand. He had knowledge of a deeper world, similar to that of Merlin and Morgana, though he was no magician.

Njal had been quite amused and even impressed with the tales of the High King Arthur Pendragon. His Saxon allies spit on his notion of respect, and yet were still shocked to find that one day the great man had disappeared without a trace. Late at night, Njal had packed his things, and made for the city of Camelot. There, he presented himself to Arthur, once more making his boasts of grandeur. Arthur was slow to believe the boasts of a shirtless and heavily tatooed giant, but allowed him to make his case in a competition. Some say that Njal outsung the best bards of Arthur's court. Others say he wrestled the entire Round Table into submission. Still others claimed that to prove his claims Njal journeyed deep into the woodlands and slew one of the last dragons. You might even find the occaisonal old coot or druid that claimed that Njal outsmarted Merlin by sacrificing his eye to Odin. What isn't contested is that the Northman proved himself several times over, and in the process lost an eye, becoming Sir Njal the Raven.

As the years went on, Njal made quite a name for himself as a defender of the common man and as one of the wiser, if not necessarily the most book smart of Arthur's Knights. His most famous achievement was the Forging of Dynja, a powerful battle axe that Njal could allegedly wield with one hand and use to summon the powers of the Gods, most notably Thor's Lightning which he used to slay the Great Wolf of Llangurig. Njal's legend was not helped though by the fact that as a pagan, he was not allowed to search for the Grail, and as such remained behind in Camelot to watch Arthur's rule collapse. Loyal to the end however, Njal eventually followed Arthur to Camlaan, where he witnessed the death of Mordred and Morgana taking Arthur to Avalon. Afterward, he gathered what men would follow him, and travelled to Eire to try and forge for himself a legacy.

Njalheim did not especially flourish as a settlement, nor did it spark a wave of Brythonic migration to Eire as Njal had initially hoped. Feeling betrayed by the people he had tried to protect and befriend for so long, Njal turned back to the ways of his youth, of his people, and became the dread Jarl, a villain in many of the inital Post-Arthurian legends. No knight-child or errant could defeat him though, and Njal began to grow old. He had taken three local women as his concubines when he had first arrived, and they had each born him a single child. His firstborn, Erik, took more to the aspect of ruling and strategy than actual combat. The second, Yrsa, inherited her father's fury and warrior strength. The third, Saga, inherited his mysticism. Each of the children bore his cold grey eyes and his fiery red hair peppered with the black of their mothers.

Yrsa in particular grew to be the pride of her father. She became acclaimed as an adventurer, a warrior, and as a storyteller across southern Eire, making up some goodwill for what her father had lost. Njal watched her grow with pride and even made special care to teach her Brythonic and his stories of the once great King Arthur. Eventually, Njal grew too old to wield Dynja, and so he gave it to Yrsa to wield, though she could not access it's power like her father. By 538, Njal knew that his time was approaching. First, he gave his blessing to Saga, who had been studying under a local druid for quite some time. Saga said her final goodbye to her mother and father, and dissappeared into the green wilds of Eire.

Next Njal entrusted the small keep and port of Njalheim to his commander and constant companion, a man by the name of Ansgar. He then took his wives and his two remaining children, and returned to the once great kingdom of Dumonia. Slowly they made their back across the land, into the land of the Saxons, and finally to a port. There Njal and his wives boarded a ship bound for his homeland. He gave Yrsa and Erik a choice, either stay in Britannia, or return to his homeland in the North. Yrsa chose to stay, while Erik sought different prospects across the cold sea. Yrsa bid her family a final farewell, watched them dissappear beyond the horizon, and once more took up adventuring, this time wandering around the lands of the Saxons and the Britons.

Possessions: Dynja: A large migration style Battleaxe made of bone steel inscribed with norse runes and fitted to an oak handle. Legendarily mystical, though Yrsa never saw her father use it's power nor has she been able to coax anything out of it herself.
Leather and cloth clothing: Yrsa wears a combination of leather and cloth clothing, as well as occasionally some tougher leather armor when she is going to fight in proper battle.
Daggers: Yrsa always carries at least two daggers on her at any given time.
Bone needles: Yrsa carries a set of bone needles on her both for sewing and repair, and for tattoos
Runestones: These small stones inscribed with the alphabet of her father's homeland can supposedly read fates. Yrsa doesn't really believe in that but she holds onto the set for good luck and for memory.
Horse: Yrsa rides Gullfaxi, a white stallion, for transportation, though she will fight on foot if she is able to.

Character Name: Cadeyrn, Son of Leofric
Culture: Briton
Gender: Male
Biography: It didn't take long for the Knights of the Round table to fade into legend, their existence turned from fact to fable in the span of a couple decades, the lands they protected once again fell toward rack and ruin under the threat of invasion from both near and far. The Men behind the legends themselves also seemingly vanished, seeking fortune and glory elsewhere or simply retiring to live in recluse and anonymity. Tristan was one of these such Knights, one of Arthur's loyal companions.

Tristan was also the nephew of the Cornish King Mark, later becoming his royal protector due to his swiftness with a blade and quick wit, his skill with the sword was put to the test when Mark was due to wed the Queen of Ireland's daughter, Iseult, however a disagreement led to conflict and Tristan was forced to battle with Morholt, a legendary Irish warrior who saw the marriage as an opportunity to extort a tribute from the Cornish King. The two did battle and ultimately, Tristan won by driving his sword through his opponents skull, but not before the Irish warrior cut Tristan's leg with a poisoned dagger. Knowing that time was short, Mark sent Tristan to find Iseult, who was also known to be a skilled healer.

The two would find one another and begin the journey back, however along the way the two consumed a potent love potion, causing the two to fall madly in love, however Tristan still kept true to his knightly vow and continued the journey to deliver Iseult to Mark for the wedding. Over the course of several years, the two continued to meet in secret behind the backs of the King and his noblemen, even managing to sire a child which they named Leofric, though the pair knew that if Leofric were to be found, it would mean certain death for the child and themselves. One day, when a merchant caravan was passing through the keep, Tristan handed Leofric over to a trader, also giving her a large sum of gold to keep it safe and a secret.

Eventually, Tristan and Iseult's adulterous affair was found out. Mark, furious, ordered Tristan to be hanged and Iseult to be locked away in the dungeons for her crimes. Though en-route to the gallows Tristan manages to write free of his binds and escapes, managing to free Iseult from her prison and the pair escape into a nearby woodland. After several weeks of living off the land and on the move from the King's men, the pair were found and bought back to be executed. However Mark, seeing the love the pair had for one another agreed to spare them both, on the condition that Tristan leave the country and vow to never return. Tristan agreed, traveling south to Brittany, living his life with another, not knowing the fate of his firstborn son.

Leofric was taken west, to the town of Durnovia where he was raised by the traders that he was bestowed upon, never knowing the secret of his lineage. Leofric became a rather proficient merchant, trading in everything from pottery to clothing and everything between, he himself sired a child, Cadeyrn, with his wife Fraya. However, his parents were killed when a Saxon raid fell upon a village they were staying in one night, Cadeyrn escaped west, linking up with a group of knight-errants who were taking up residence in an abandoned abbey one cold night. Eventually, the Knights took Cadeyrn in as one of their own, training him in the basics of written and spoken language and eventually, the arts of sword-fighting and combat. Though young, he showed vigor and daring. However, work for a knight-errant was few and far between and so Cadeyrn eventually fell upon a farm where he worked the harvest season out, though something all the while was calling out to him, like a voice from inside the earth guiding him along, leading him towards his true purpose.

Shortsword is kind of a historically meaningless term and basically just describes any kind of one handed sword. What kind of sword is it? A spatha? A seaxe? A rusty old gladius? Cornwall is known as Cerniw in 540, and is part of the Kingdom of Dumonnia. Work that out and you'll be accepted!

Hey James, just as I brought up on discord, hash out your details for your weapons and armor, and it's ok to have a mount but no warhorses. Maybe ditch the lance for a handy dandy spear?

Most of this app is great with just a couple of things needing touched up. Wales in 540 is about as politically unified as Yugoslavia is today and is full of major and minor kingdoms settled by Britons and Gaels, vying for power, and quibbling over territory and political influence. Gwent is an extant kingdom in 540 (though a client kingdom of Powys for the time being) but there is no prince of Wales or any such thing and there wasn't when Arthur ruled either. True arming swords are several centuries out so please pick something more contemporary for the period. And just out of curiosity, is your coolus just the dome piece or does it have protection for the sides of your head and such?

RP Example: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=438901&p=36239793&hilit=Henry#p36239793

I like how your character's history is as much of a tall tale as Arthur's. Approved.

There is magic in this RP, and perhaps your axe may have some magic of its own but for the time being lets keep it as just an axe.

Character Name: Woodrow Wynchell
Culture: Briton
Gender: Male
Biography: He is a descendant of Sir Gawain and raised near the Black river at the edge of the Forest Land. Woodrow Wynchell is a woodsman. Spending most of his time splitting wood and marking declining trees for removal. Woodrow makes a living selling premium wood pieces to furniture makers in the nearby lands. The locals often trade goods for fire wood. His living is simple and determined.
Woodrow was born in the year of Lord 501AD. His mother and father were woods people and fared well, both passing away by an unknown illness that swept through the land. Woodrow is known to be a hearty fellow with a good laugh! He has made friends with the animals in the woods and loves to visit the wolves in the northern parts of the Forest Land.

RP Example:

Woodrow woke to a terrible cry from the forest. He knew the sound and grave it was. He clothed his self quickly as the cries continued from outside.

Possessions: family axe, leather clothes and tunic, water flask, leather satchel, fixed blade knife,

There is promise here but there is more you can do. Where is the forestland by the Black River? There is a Lore thread that talks about several Briton Kingdoms, if you made this location up that is perfectly fine, but you should find a place for it to exist geographically. How is Woodrow related to Sir Gawain? Why is the almost 40 year old descendant of a Knight of the Round Table working as a woodcutter in a wilderness area of Britain? Put some thought into that please and if you need help feel free to ask for help in the OOC, send a telegram to me, or reach out to an RP mentor.

This is interesting, but I do have a few questions that were not entirely answered through the Q&A nor the Lore page.

1. Historically, Latin and Roman culture, in general, persisted in Britain until after the total subjugation by the Saxon. You mentioned that the Britons went back to their old ways, but I'm assuming Latin and the nascent British Roman language still exist?

2. What are the absolute limits on magical abilities? I'm not asking about being able to call fire from the heavens but is this closer to how magic works in Lord of the Rings, which is more "technology" based? You mentioned artefacts but does that exclude small conjuration?

3. At least one character is a female warrior. What are the limits of female knights?
Christus vincit; Christus regnat; Christus imperat
"All things have their season, and in their times all things pass under heaven"--Ecclesiastes 3:1
"Great Britain is a republic, with a hereditary president, while the United States is a monarchy with an elective king."
"The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected"--G. K. Chesterton
Pro: British Unionism, Catholicism, Classicism, Conservatism, High Toryism, Monarchism, Traditionalism
Anti: Consumerism, Devolution, Materialism, Modernism, Post-Modernism, Progressivism

Thanks for the questions, I'll add these answers to the Q & A as well.

3. There is no requirement for any of the characters to be a knight. Celtic society in general was rather more permissive to women than Rome was as things went and while it may be a stretch, for the sake of RP I'm allowing it permissible for a woman to be a warrior, especially if she can keep her own.

Plate mail is farther away from the people of 540 than it is from us in the modern day. How about your sword? Is it a spatha style weapon after the roman pattern, or the more modern style migration period weapon? I'm not picking just trying to make sure its all hashed out.

Hey James, just as I brought up on discord, hash out your details for your weapons and armor, and it's ok to have a mount but no warhorses. Maybe ditch the lance for a handy dandy spear?

Fixed it all!
The name's James. James Usari. Well, my name is not actually James Usari, so don't bother actually looking it up, but it'll do for now.

Ahh yes! Fixed that too, going for lamellar.
