ULAN KHOL – With just two weeks to go until the start of the 2020 Ulan Khol Invictus, the Caldish team is expected to continue its long-running streak at the forefront of the winter games. Sports commentators throughout Caldia expect the team to perform well as it has historically.

Predictions from a Sportsnet, an Estmerish company that analyzes team performances at the Invictus Games, are also favorable for Caldia. Sportsnet’s latest prediction has Caldia placing third this year, consistent with past performances. The company uses data on individual and team results from past Invictus, world championships, and national contests to generate their projections.

The biggest question mark for this year’s contest is how larger, geographically northern nations perform. Caldia frequently vies Narozalica, Cassier, Swetania, and Werania for the top spot at the Winter Invictus. There is also the powerful Gaullican and Etrurian teams, whose athletes are highly competitive.

The Caldish team is bolstered by its strong performance in skiing contests, winning hundreds of medals since the start of the Winter Invictus in 1920. Skiing is a major pastime in Caldia, with thousands skiing competitively. The country’s northern location and bountiful ski resorts provide the country with plenty of opportunity.

There are six skiing contests this year: Aventine skiing, the biathlon, cross-country skiing, freestyle skiing, ski jumping, and the skiing combined. Caldia is expected to have an edge in cross-country skiing and ski jumping this year. However, the team will remain highly competitive in all skiing contests and several others.

This year Caldish athletes will participate in every sport. 104 Caldians will compete in all 15 sports. They are expected to perform well in curling, a sport native to Caldia, along with ice hockey and figure skating. However, the latter is among the Winter Invictus’ most competitive sports, with many countries vying to for gold.

The country has hosted the Winter Invictus twice before, first in Spalgleann in 1972 and most recently in Benbaun in 1996. Caldia also hosted its first Summer Invictus in 2018, but its dominance has always been limited to the winter games.

It placed first in both winter games it hosted, along with six others over the past century. In total, Caldish athletes have won close to 300 medals at the Winter Invictus. The Caldish team is expected to maintain its place this year, bolstered by predictions from Sportsnet.

What you need to know, two weeks out

  • The Caldish faces of this year’s Winter Invictus will be Bhioctoria Nic Ghille, well-known for her performance in the 2016 biathlon, and Eoghan Ó Dubhghaill who is expected to compete for his fourth gold in the ski jump.
  • The last Invictus for some Caldish legends. Three famous athletes will compete in the winter games for the last time. Oisín Mac Carthaigh, high-performing cross-country skier, Eithne Ni Cheanndubháin, long-time figure skater, and Cathal Mag Uidhir, a member of the curling team, are among those who will retire once February’s games come to a close.
  • Who qualifies for the Caldish team? Trials for a spot on Team Caldia were held over the past year, with 118 athletes (60 men and 58 women) qualifying for a spot.
  • The games begin next Friday, 7 February, with the opening ceremony. They will run until the closing ceremony, set for Sunday 23 February.
  • Where do I watch the games? TRN has exclusive coverage of the 2020 Winter Invictus. All matches will be broadcast on TRN Spórt. The opening and closing ceremonies along with major contests will be broadcast on TRN Amháin and rebroadcast on TRN Dhá.

Cassien athletes "ready" for Ulan Khol

SHARE Image Image Image Image

As the world turns to Ulan Khol Team Cassier is widely expected to put on one of their best showings seen so far

The AHL agreed to give its players a green light to compete in the games as Team Cassier seeks to defend their gold medal in Narozalica.

ULAN KHOL - The countdown to the long awaited 2020 Winter Invictus Games in Narozalica is reaching its climax and a wide sense of excitement has not only been felt across Cassier but for the athletes heading to Ulan Khol as well. Cassier is nearly universally expected to be in contention for a top spot in medals, with Team Cassier sending its 'strongest team ever'.

  • Where to tune in on gameday
  • An interview with Selena Yevtushenkova
  • Indigenous protests against pipeline continues

Cassier is one of the giants in winter sports with a rich history with the Winter Invictus Games spanning the majority of Cassier's modern history. Traditionally Cassier places either at the forefront or within the top three spots in medals at the games, and remains one of sporting events Cassier excels in the most.

Though predictions by major sports networks and analyists have remained optimistic, most Cassien athletes and their coaches are expecting the competition in Ulan Khol to be among the most difficult seen yet. This game's men's and women's hockey in particular is expected to be especially competitive, with a total of twenty three nations competing for gold, the largest number seen in the games.

"Despite our roster we've definitely got our work cut out for us," Cassier's mens hockey coach Robert Gicquel commented in an interview Tuesday. "Of course there's the Narozalicans, Chervolesians, and Azmarans, but there are also any one of nineteen other teams we could be playing against. Despite this, I can say that our guys will be good to go when the puck drops."

Men's hockey is the most widely spectated of any sport in the winter games with a record 17.2 million Cassiens tuning in to the gold medal match in the 2016 final. As usual the men's team will be bolstered by a hand-picked roster of some of the best Cassien players in the league, a majority of whom were on the 2016 roster. Cassier holds the highest number of medals in hockey with the teams holding a total of thirteen gold and six silver finishes.

Outside of the rink the performance of Cassier's freestyle teams are also highly anticipated. Cassier has remained the medal leader in freestyle skiing since its debut in the 1992 games and has become among the most popular sports among Cassiens, especially recently as the sport, along with its counterparts in the various other downhill freestyle disciplines, have grown to reach a wider audience.

Cassier's downhill freestyle teams, similarly to the hockey, will be comprised of skiers and riders from the top level most of whom have placed on the podium in previous games.

While the freestyle teams are expected to vie for top spots in Ulan Khol disaster struck the women's Aventine ski team last month when two time gold medalist Lola Duverger was injured during a training run, breaking her right femur. Though a replacement skier has been found Duverger and her coaches were devastated by the news, as her injury will not only prevent her from competing in the games but could also see her off the slopes for the foreseeable future.

Cassier will be present in all fifteen men's and women's competitions in Ulan Khol this year, along with large number of Cassiens that are also expected to attend the games as well. The Cassien government has issued travel statements to Cassien spectators, and has advised Cassiens to exercise a "usual amount of caution" during their stay in Narozalica.

Cassier has hosted four Winter Invictus games in the past; the 1924 games in Saint Marie, Lac-Eloise in 1960, Bougainville in 1988, and most recently Barnier in 2008. Nouvelle-Rayenne made a bid to host this years games but lost out to this year's host in Ulan Khol. Cassier has also hosted two summer games; Nouvelle-Rayenne in 1938 and Saint-Marie in 1994.

The official start to the games is on February 7th, and all sports will be broadcasted on SRC/Radio-Cassier, Cascom Media, Rogier Media, and TLG.

BHIOCTORIA Nic GHILLE's BIG OPPORTUNITY AT THE ULAN KHOL GAMES

ULAN KHOL – The 2020 Winter Invictus are just two days away, with the opening ceremony this Friday. There are high expectations for the Caldish team at Ulan Khol, with the team predicted to place in one of the top spots for the medal count. Caldia stands to perform well and will seriously compete for dozens of medals, many of them gold. Bhioctoria Nic Ghille is one Caldish athlete who is expected to secure a gold medal for her team. She is the defending champion in the Women's Biathlon, clinching gold at Haussimont in 2016.

Her performance in 2016 was memorable for beating expectations. Nic Ghille was only twenty-one years old at Haussimont and was competing with seasoned veterans from across the world. The unexpected victory won her the endearment of her Caldish fans.

The biathlon has a long history in Caldish sports. It is native to Caldia, rooted in mythological traditions. In Caldish mythology, Cernunnos is the god of the hunt and is also associated with skiing. Evidence indicates that as early as the second century, hunters would ski while using a bow and arrow. During the 17th century, this practice was adapted by the Caldish military. Ski regiments were introduced and the military held its own skiing competitions. Similar traditions developed in neighboring Ordennia and spread to Narozalica, Werania, Estmere, and Gaullica in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The biathlon debuted at the first Winter Games held in 1920, first known as the Military Combined and was later renamed.

At Ulan Khol, Nic Ghille hopes to continue the long Caldish tradition of dominating the biathlon and defend her status as reigning champion.
In an interview with TRN, she said she was “excited to see what opportunities” the Ulan Khol games would offer.

“There is real potential, not just for myself but for the whole of the team. It is always an honor just to be able to compete and represent your home nation. After years of preparation, I am looking forward to competing at the Invictus again” she said.

Now twenty-five, Nic Ghille heads to Ulan Khol as one of the leading faces of the Caldish team.

DISAPPOINTING RESULTS FOR IMAGUA'S LUGE TEAM
Dambrauskas places eleventh in first heat, Dunleavy places twentieth in first heat

Brad Dambrauskas

Imagua is off to a rough start this Invictus Games, as Brad Dambrauskas and Tyra Dunleavy placed eleventh and twentieth in the first heat of the singles event.

Brad Dambrauskas' time was at 47.25 seconds, just 0.4 seconds behind Senrian TBD, placing him in eleventh place, while Tyra Dunleavy's time was at 52.094 seconds, or 0.637 seconds behind Werania's TBD, securing her twentieth place, and just 0.206 seconds from the elimination threshold.

Dambrauskas said that "we had been practicing for months, so to perform this poorly is a bit of a disappointment. However, I am confident that next heat, we will be able to secure a victory in the luge."

Dunleavy echoed these sentiments, saying that "While I am disappointed by my results in the first heat, I have high hopes that we Imaguans will progress through the luge, and even if we don't, I am confident that our biathletes will win in the Invictus Games."

Democratic Labour Party leader Douglas Egnell said that "while these results may be a bit discouraging for Imaguans, I must reassure you that the biathletes are practicing hard, and I guarantee that they will at least come home with a bronze. I also have high confidence in Mr. Dambrauskas and Miss Dunleavy, and that they will recover next heat."

IT'S ON!
Here's what you need to know on the first day of the Invictus Games.

Sunday, 9th February 2020|Ulan Khol, Narozalica

Harald Skinner is seen celebrating after the Eldmarsk team wins an exhibition last fall. He and the team will be facing stiff competition in this year's Invictus.

Ulan Khol

It's Invictus time yet again, this time in the far away nation of Narozalica. Coming off as the winners of the Coupe du Monde, Narozalica has a lot already to celebrate over, and being at the same time the host of the Winter Invictus has culminated in a festive atmosphere that is much more noticeable than usual. The Opening Ceremony, filled with nationalist zeal and pride, belonged to the host nation. However, the next day to come would all too well belong to Eldmark. Though the Eldmarsk hockey team has yet to perform on the ice, tensions are high as the AHL has cleared its professionals to play in the invictic teams of their nation, leading Cassier and Chervolesia each to pull their members, with Eldmark following suit, leading many to believe the finals will inevitably become a shootout between the three teams. Upon asking, team captain and hotshot Harald Skinner was pretty confident his team would pull off with the gold. "No doubt. No doubt. We aren't to be underestimated. We aren't even on their radar, and that's only their mistake."

Outside hockey, both singles athletes, Ivar Fromm and Lynette Norquist, performed well, each advancing to the finals at 3rd and 6th, respectively.

Fireworks display as part of the opening ceremony.

ULAN KHOL, NAROZALICA - The 12th Winter Invictus Games began this week in Narozalica with a mixed start so far for the Velzemian athletes. The opening ceremony was a large display of bright lights and Narozalic culture to give all the international attendees a flavour of the host nation. It ended with a speech by the President of the Organising Committee and a dazzling array of fireworks. The opening ceremony was praised as one of the best ever by attendees and commentators alike.

Velzemia won it's ice hockey match against Senria by a thread (S 0-1 V) yesterday but fans and commentators agreed it will need to work harder if it want's to do better in it's next games. The team captain, Taneli Heiskanen, has said that "we're training and preparing for the next game. We don't want to embarrass the nation and we are proud to be here in Ulan Khol representing Velzemia". In the other sports Velzemia has not fared so well with it's mens figure skaters coming 11th, it's womens 7th, and it's pairs in last place in the first heat.

CALDISH MEN BEAT BRUMAH 1-0, ADVANCE IN ICE HOCKEY COMPETITION

The Caldish Men's Ice Hockey team defeated Brumah 1 to 0 and have advanced in the competition.

ULAN KHOL - The Caldish Men's Ice Hockey team is celebrating their 1-0 victory over Brumah in today's match.

In what start as a tense match, Caldia was able to sail to victory over their southeast Coian rivals after star player Conor Ó Seoigh sank the puck towards the end of the second period. The Caldish team was able to hold their own for the rest of the match, with goalkeeper Mánus Mac Giolla Iosa blocking all shots all the net. The third and final period was marked by failed efforts by both teams to get points on the board.

The results were cheered on by fans throughout the country and by Caldish fans who had attended the match. Thousands of Caldish supporters have traveled to Narozalica to attend the 2020 Ulan Khol Games. Taoiseach Stiofán Mac Suibhne, an avid fan of ice hockey, tweeted his congratulations to the men's team.

TRN Coverage of Team Caldia at the 2020 Ulan Khol Games:
  • Caldia places 7th in men's first figure skating heat.
  • Caldia takes 16th spot in women's first figure skating heat.
  • Caldia narrowly escapes elimination in pair's first figure skating heat, placing 21st.
  • Disappointing 6th place finish for Caldia in Mens 500 meter speed skating.
  • Caldish men beat Brumah 1-0, advance in ice hockey competition.
Caldia will now advance to the second round, where they will face the hosts Narozalica. While the Caldish team typically makes it far in the ice hockey competition, some fans are worried about facing Narozalica so early. The team will have the host advantage and regularly dominates international ice hockey competitions. Despite this, fans and players alike remain optimistic. Even if Caldia is unlikely to secure a medal in men's ice hockey, it has a better chance in the women's competition.

Elsewhere, Etruria beat Amathia after going into overtime today. The Etrurian team will face Chervolesia, another giant in international ice hockey, in the second round. The matches for day three of the men's competition are as follows: Florena v. Xiaodong, Aimilia v. Jindao, and Gaullica v. Satucin.

ULAN KHOL: DAY FOUR SEES CALDIA CLINCH ITS FIRST MEDALS

The pack during the men's cross-country skiing competition, won by Caldia’s Oisín Mac Carthaigh.

ULAN KHOL - With the close of Day Four at Ulan Khol, Team Caldia has made advances in several key contests.

Securing its first gold medal, Caldia topped the men’s 15km freestyle competition for cross-country skiing. Caldia’s Oisín Mac Carthaigh won his third ever gold medal in the contest. He placed ahead of athletes from Zorasan and host Narozalica, who took silver and bronze respectively.

Mac Carthaigh’s gold will be his last earned at the Winter Invictus. Prior to the start of the games, the high-profile skier announced this would be his last games. In years past, he has regularly vied for the top spot in the men’s freestyle. The forty-six year-old leaves the games with a total of three gold medals, one silver medal, one bronze medals, and a number of other high placements in his twenty plus year tenure as an Invictus athlete for Team Caldia.

Mac Carthaigh’s final gold is the first earned for the Caldish team at Ulan Khol.

Day Four also saw Caldia secure its first silver medal. In the women’s cross-country 10km free-style, skier Deirdre Nic an t-Saoir clinched second place. She placed behind an athlete from Zorasan and a place ahead of Satucin.

As the skiing competitions continue, Caldia is expected to match its historical performances and rank up a number of medals. Skiing is a major pastime in Caldia, both competitively and recreationally. Team Caldia often sends multiple athletes to each skiing competition and boasts dozens of gold medals in skiing.

The medals put Caldia on the board after a lackluster start at the Ulan Khol Games, with Caldia struggling to place at the forefront of key contests. Yesterday saw Team Caldia make its first breakthroughs, something Caldish athletes hope to continue today.

Congratulations to @GelekNyima and @sangey_jigme! Their silver medals in short track speed skating were well earned, and a testament to their drive and determination. They bring pride and joy to themselves, their family and their nation. #UlanKhol2020Image
