Welcome to Land of Hope and Glory, a British political RP which enables players to explore and immerse themselves into the complicacies of the centuries old political system of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, from the bellicose exchanges within the House of Commons to the reserved scrutiny of the House of Lords and from the quiet conscientious deliverance of constituency work to the sardonic tenor of a divided political discourse.

The Government is in crisis. Over two years ago, when Diana Naismith came to power in the wake of Daniel Campion’s resignation, there was a lot of positive energy and goodwill. Labour were trailing in the polls, and Naismith was seen as a reliable, safe pair of hands, not ideologically bound to the fringes of the Party, who could shepherd the United Kingdom through the disruption of Brexit and towards the promises beyond.

Oh how times have changed.

A disastrous election result in 2017 has led to an insurgency by the Opposition, and the fabric of the constitution itself is beginning to splinter under the strain. Operating a Conservative minority government propped up by the DUP, the Prime Minister has found herself unable to move forward with her Withdrawal Agreement, despite the positive steps she has attempted to make to pass it. The DUP have been alienated, and ultra-Remainers and ultra-Brexiteers in her own Party act as a constant foil to her attempts to get the job done.

Narrowly surviving a confidence vote in December, the Prime Minister has resolved to resign come the summer, to make way for a new Conservative leader, and thus a new Prime Minister. Her legacy, no matter how positive she has tried to be, will forever be marked by her impotence in office.

The race to become the next Prime Minister, however, has already begun. Not merely in terms of the Conservative Party leadership, but also the sure expectation that - following the leadership election - the new Tory leader will be expected to seek a new mandate, a fresh general election. Parliament will be dissolved, and the country will decide… Who will be Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland?

Play as a Minister, MP, Lord or any other such politically inclined individual. Or perhaps, you are more predisposed towards standing for election? From Councillor to the Premiership, you have the opportunity to shape the United Kingdom and it's political landscape, and potentially ensure that history remembers you.

All characters within this RP are original and all political figures after Margaret Thatcher's resignation in 1990 have been replaced by ersatz politicians. However, all historical events, statistics and issues up until the RP's beginning remain the same.

However, the Prime Minister has changed, Diana Naismith is the current occupant of 10 Downing Street. Appointed after the resignation of Prime Minister Daniel Campion after the vote to leave the European Union in June, 2016, she inherited a Parliamentary majority and faced a controversial front bench in the form of the Leader of the Opposition, Alexandra Bennet. Confident that a General Election would give her a fresh mandate in order to successfully negotiate Brexit, Naismith called a General Election for June 2017, however much like in real life, Naismith's weaknesses and poor campaigning by the Conservative Party led to a hung Parliament. Forced into a supply and confidence agreement with the DUP, the position of the Prime Minister has gradually worsened over time.

I suggest that, due to rules regarding limits to RP thread numbers those who have had applications accepted post their apps on here, both for easier access to them in addition to providing information to potential applicants regarding the RP's existing characters.

I am also going to post my app on here in order to visualise a model application for potential applicants to look over in order to help shape their application, should it be required.

Main Weaknesses: Could have difficulty appealing to Remainers, controversial Ministerial career, could have limited appeal amongst Northern and Scottish voters.
Biography:
Isabel Grace Morton was born on the 22nd March 1973 in the city of Hanover, West Germany. The only daughter and 3rd child of a British Army Officer. Raised in a lower-middle class family meant that Isobel was raised in fairly comfortable conditions, even if some had it better. As a student studying at Southfield Girls School, Morton excelled at her studies, achieving 9 GCSE's before then going onto achieving A Levels in Politics, History, English Language and Sociology.

Isabel Morton then went onto study Politics and International Relations at the University of Nottingham in 1991, where she was an active member of the University Conservative Association, later becoming its President. It was during her University education that Morton met Richard Howard, a law student, whom she would shortly after begin a relationship with.

However, in 1993 Morton stood, whilst still as a student for the Moulton division of Northamptonshire County Council. Despite her relative youthfulness and inexperience, Morton was elected with 38% of the vote, down from the previous councillor. Isabel's time spent as a councillor was predominantly spent supporting rural communities, ensuring that wind turbines were not erected within her council division for which she received immense support from her constituents.

However, 4 years after being elected, Morton was selected for the newly-recreated seat of Stone, standing on a platform of Euroscepticism and a focus on the issues of law and order meant that Morton was elected as the Member of Parliament for Stone with 45% of the vote, one of the few Conservative successes that election. Soon after, Isabel Morton married Richard Howard, now a practising Immigration Lawyer.

Upon entering Parliament, Morton-Howard almost immediately began to develop her career, quickly placing herself on the Tory right. As a result of her focus on Home Affairs in both her campaigning and maiden speech, Morton-Howard was placed on the Home Affairs Select Committee. During this time, Morton-Howard made comments that were supportive of the use of capital punishment for crimes deemed severe enough. This provoked a large amount of Parliamentary backlash with Morton-Howard being the subject of criticism by the New Labour government, featuring in their campaigning during the 2001 General Election. Despite this, Morton-Howard's position was unaffected and she was appointed as an assistant opposition whip in February 2002 under (Not Iain Duncan-Smith) and was was fairly successful in that role, with the exception of when a whip was placed on adoption by unmarried couples, which weakened both (Not Iain Duncan-Smith's) position and her's due to her position as assistant whip and her support for the policy during her time as a backbencher.

Morton-Howard's tenure as an assistant whip however, ended in May 2010 with the formation of a Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition after which she was appointed Private Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of State for Immigration, a position through which she influenced the formation of the "hostile environment" policy of the Home Office, and a policy which she later was responsible for after being appointed Immigration Minister 2 years later in April 2012.

Ms Morton-Howard's tenure as Immigration Minister was rather fraught with controversy, with many placing prime responsibility on her for the adoption of the hostile environment policy which was accused of being racist, however, it also led to support for Morton-Howard amongst members of the working class and the Eurosceptic movement. In 2013, Morton-Howard published a book titled "Back to Basics: How the Conservative Party can change Britain for the better" which included within it proposals such as a withdrawal from the EU and the introduction of a points-based immigration system. The book was controversial with Morton-Howard almost being forced out of the Cabinet by the moderately Conservative Prime Minister, however public support forced him to retain her. In 2015 UKIP declined to stand a candidate against Morton-Howard in that years General Election due to her fierce Euroscepticism.

After the referendum was called on Britain's membership of the European Union, Isabel Morton-Howard, a lifelong Eurosceptic, almost immediately endorsed and joined the Vote Leave campaign, soon becoming one of the most well known figures of the campaign, to the irritation of the then Prime Minister. However, on the 24th of June it was announced that the United Kingdom had voted to leave the European Union, the reaction from Ms Morton-Howard was one of positive reflection, believing that now that Britain had voted to leave, it was morally correct to immediately start the process of leaving the EU and "Deliver upon Brexit". It was during that time that the Prime Minister resigned feeling that he could not lead the nation after the Remain campaign had been defeated.

Practically overnight, Morton-Howard began to be seen as a successor for the office. However, she announced shortly after that she would not be standing as a candidate and endorsed (Not Andrea Leadsom) for the leadership instead, who later withdrew leaving the then Home Secretary as the only candidate for the Conservative leadership and was appointed Prime Minister in July.
Soon after, Morton-Howard was appointed as the first Secretary of State for exiting the European Union, a position which allowed the government to have the support of Conservative Eurosceptics and Leave voters.

However, the result of the 2017 General Election soon led to her private resentment of the Government, in particular the Prime Minister who she previously had a good working relationship with at the Home Office, this was compounded by her view that the negotiations were tedious and obstructed the democratic will of the British electorate and feeling that the Prime Minister was appeasing the EU to too much of a degree, Isobel Morton-Howard ultimately resigned in July 2018 after the Chequers agreement was published, claiming that the Brexit envisioned by the government was "Not the one called for by the British people in the democratic referendum two years ago." This ultimately led to Morton-Howard supporting the vote of no-confidence in the Prime Minister in December 2018. However, with that having failed, the former Brexit Secretary is planning on frustrating the Prime Minister's withdrawal agreement and secure the keys to 10 Downing Street and deliver Brexit.

Character Age: 62
Character Height: 5’1”

Character Position/Role/Job: Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (2017-), Home Secretary (2010-2017), MP for Woodspring/North Somerset (1997-), Avon County Councillor (1990-1996), Bank of England consultant (1985-1992), Banker (1977-1985).
Appearance:
Image

Character Constituency of Origin: Exeter
Character Constituency of Residence: North Somerset
Character Party Affiliation: Conservative and Unionist

Main Strengths: Capacity for compromise allows for her to build a broad coalition across the One Nation and Brexiteer wings; methodical and details focused in her work, seen as a ‘safe pair of hands’; generally seen as a positive role model for women in politics.
Main Weaknesses: Capacity for compromise also causes the most liberal and most conservative Conservatives to be defiant and distrustful of her leadership; uncharismatic and weak on the campaign trail; health issues cause some questions from unsympathetic circles; Home Office record has opened her to criticism from the left.

Biography:
Diana Esmé Naismith (née Carpenter) was born in 1956, in Exeter, Devon, one of three daughters of Richard and Madeleine Carpenter. Her father was an army chaplain, whilst her mother worked as a secretary for the local Conservative MP. Receiving a modest education at first, she was an excellent student and managed to progress on first to a grammar school and from there qualified for a scholarship to Cambridge University, where she read Economics. It was at university that her own political instincts first came to the fore, with friends noting her ambition, and keenness to see more women represented in politics.

She would graduate second class in 1977, and then immediately transition into working for a major bank, and it would be whilst working for the Royal Bank of Scotland that she would meet her husband, Edward Naismith. They would enter their relationship with an understanding that it would ultimately be a childless one, with Diana’s genetic predisposition to asthma making her unwilling to bear children.

Her career would develop in 1985 when she moved into working with the Bank of England, working from their branch office in Bristol. It was at this time that she elected to move to the seaside down of Clevedon, not far from her new workplace. Further developing her understanding of economic and social issues, her political interests were revived. In 1990, she was selected in a council by-election to become a county councillor in Avon, in which she served for six years as an able and vocal member of the council.

After Avon’s dissolution in 1996, she was selected as the Conservative candidate for the Woodspring constituency in 1997, following the elevation of the prior holder to the Lords after his decision to retire. Diana would take the Conservative safe seat handily, and would hold it to the present day (it would be renamed North Somerset in 2010).

Under Hayes and Dowding-Short, she would serve in the Shadow Portfolios first for Education, and then for Transport. In 2003, she would become the first female Chairman of the Conservative Party, and it was at that year’s Conservative Party Conference that she gave her infamous speech decrying the Tory Party’s image issues and calling out those members who would not accept blame. When Howell became the Tory leader later that year, she would be shuffled back to Transport.

When Daniel Campion became Tory leader in 2005, Naismith was made Shadow Leader of the House of Commons, a role in which she served capably, and it was expected that she would continue in the Government equivalent when the Conservative Party formed a coalition with the Liberal Democrats after the 2010 election. To the astonishment of many, she was instead made Home Secretary in the new Campion Ministry.

As Home Secretary, she notably nixed Labour’s proposed ID card scheme (a hangover from the Blake government), and - with the help of junior Immigration Minister Morton-Howard - began the ‘hostile environment’ policy as part of a general frontier to bring down immigration figures. Whilst personally ambivalent on immigration, Naismith recognised the importance in confronting it as an issue for ordinary British people.

She would extend bans on narcotic substances, criminalising a number of ‘legal highs’, against the advice of some scientific bodies. With regards to policing, she also expanded police powers, and spoke with particular pride about the drop in crime during the Coalition Government, despite the cuts that had been made to the Home Office budget.

Concurrently whilst serving as Home Secretary, she also served as Minister for Women and Equalities. Whilst this was criticised due to her previous votes against expanding LGBT freedoms, she had - since the Civil Partnerships legislation in 2004 - become increasingly liberal on LGBT issues, and in fact would go on to champion them in her later Premiership.

After Campion resigned in 2016 following the Leave victory in the EU Membership Referendum, Naismith was urged by some colleagues to run - whilst she had campaigned for Remain, she had not done so enthusiastically nor gone to any lengths to belittle Leave voters, as some politicians had. Finding the majority of her support in the more liberal wing of the Party, she nonetheless achieved wide respect both on account of her long ministerial career (the Home Office had a tendency to ‘break’ politicians of any party) and her willingness to accept the referendum result and move forward on it.

Naismith’s last opponent in the leadership contest, (not-Andrea Leadsom), would withdraw on account of the vast disparity in support between them in the final ballot, allowing May to become the next Conservative Leader, and thus the next Prime Minister, without a full leadership election. She resisted initial calls to call a general election, feeling it inappropriate to do so just one year after the previous.

Upon taking office, she conducted a brutal cabinet purge, dropping several Campion Ministers including (not-George Osborne), who would appear to have a particular and continuing resentment against her for this. Her Ministry swung from strengths to weaknesses and back, moving forward expansions of civil rights whilst being assaulted by the left over matters of foreign policy, with Naismith’s willingness to do business with US President Donald Trump, and invitation for him to enjoy a state visit, were seen poorly, despite the practical matters involved.

Eventually, with Naismith’s authority stalling on account of her slender majority from the 2015 election, she would call an election in 2017. This would be a categorical disaster, losing her majority on the back of a weak manifesto that had been bodged by a mixture of her Downing Street SpAds and right wing elements of the Party, where her social care policies were denounced as a ‘dementia tax’ and the proposal for a free vote on fox-hunting never entirely left the news cycle. This forced Naismith to form a shaky confidence-and-supply arrangement with the DUP of Northern Ireland, leaving her vulnerable, lacking in authority and politically impotent to proceed with her Withdrawal Agreement, which was stalling on account of the Northern Irish backstop.

Barely surviving a leadership contest in December, on the back of a promise that she would resign after delivering Brexit, Naismith limps on, hoping to preserve her legacy and uphold good government, standing by her mantra that the Conservatives cannot afford to be seen as the Nasty Party.

Other Info: Diana is asthmatic. On account of her genetic predisposition towards asthma, she elected not to have children with her husband.

She is seen as One Nation, liberal Conservative.

Political Positions:
Abortion: Does not support change in abortion laws one way or the other, but would like to extend zones around clinics to protect women from harrassment.
Brexit: Whilst having campaigned on the basis of Remain, she kept her head low. After the result, she embraced delivering on Brexit with a comprehensive, positive deal - the hill on which her Prime Ministerial career died.
Climate Change: Has acknowledged the human causes of climate change and upheld and supported policies to make Britain greener. Has not, however, prevented her support for other energy projects (see Energy).
Defence: Has supported a strong defence stance, proud to have seen one of Britain’s new aircraft carriers launched in her premiership. Whilst wanting to expand the Forces, has lacked the political capital to do so. Joined US and France in conducting airstrikes in Syria.
Energy: Supports expanding UK energy production whilst reducing reliance on coal. Coal use has dropped radically during her two year premiership, whilst use of fracking has expanded, and nuclear projects have continued despite set-backs.
Veterans: Wants to apply ‘same standard’ to UK NI veterans as applied to former IRA to end prosecutions, but lacks political capital to do so. Has supported legislation to prioritise veterans in state employment and welfare services.
Immigration: Personally indifferent, but has grasped political impetus regarding immigration. Having acknowledged public attitudes on immigration, she endeavoured to bring raw statistics down whilst at the Home Office. Has committed to a ‘fair and equal’ system post-Brexit.
Devolution: Personally unsupportive of the devolved assemblies, politically she has remained relatively quiet on the subject, except with regards to Northern Ireland and has avoided legislating over NI to protect GFA. Vocally opposed to independence movements.
Northern Powerhouse: Supportive of northern local government initiatives and industrial expansion, has continued to support (not-Cameron) era infrastructure projects to improve northern economic potential.
NHS: Supporter of maintaining a free-at-the-point-of-use NHS through whatever means is most efficient on a case by case basis - private or public supplies. Wanted to increase contributions of the wealthy to social care but failed to do so.
Home Affairs: Highly critical of (not-Blair) period reforms, has embraced a tough on crime attitude. Has funded expansion of police and supported expansion of police powers. Has strengthened sentencing laws but has resulted in major issues with prison populations.
International Development: Remains committed to international development funding and the maintenance of a separate DfID.

Character Information Sheet

NS Nation Name: Puertollano
Character Name: Barbara Stellar
Character Gender: Female
Character Age: 60
Character Height: 1.5m
Character Weight: 60kg
Character Position/Role/Job: MP for Bolsover (1992-Current)
Appearance: Image
Character model, for personal note: Victoria Treadell
Character Constituency of Origin: Hartlepool
Character Constituency of Residence: Bolsover
Character Party Affiliation: Labour
Main Strengths: Popular local member, symbiotic with working class.
Main Weaknesses: Past criticism over treatment of staffers, tenuous relationship with National Executive Committee.
Biography: Barbara Rhiannon Fairway was born in 1959 to her parents in a small council home in Hartlepool. Her father was a labourer at the port in Hartlepool, where he would unload shipments coming into the town. Her mother was a stay-at-home wife, like many women during that period. Both of her parents were both committed labour members, and also staunch socialists. This radical upbringing helped shape her beliefs that she continues to hold today. Barbara attended the local state-funded school, where she took up an interest in nursing and medicine. Following her initial years of schooling, Barbara went off to do nursing, where she found her passion. This took her to Bolsover, where the mining communities there were in need of more nurses, Barbara accepted and transferred to a hospital in Bolsover.

Although having been a member in the union (GMB), Barbara had never been much of an activist until she really settled into Bolsover. There she took part in union campaigns in 1982 against the Tory Government. It was during this same time span that Barbara met Nicolai Stellar, a Romanian-born miner in Bolsover. She first met him when he arrived at the hospital following a mining accident, where he fell over and broke his leg. Barbara was responsible for nursing him back to health. In a later interview, Barbara admits that she fell in love with him during that period, and so did he with her. Nicolai's family had escaped Romania during World War Two and he was brought up in an immigrant, working-class family. That working class background brought them together further. Together, they married in 1985. She took on his last name.

Feeling like she wanted a change of pace, Barbara convinced Nicolai to run for Council District election as a Labour candidate. He was successfully elected as one of the Labour councilors in Bolsover North West in 1987. She campaigned fervently on his behalf and Nicolai served as a socialist-leaning Labour councilor for many more local elections to come. Convinced as to her own campaigning capabilities, Barbara believed it was time she tried to run for political office. In 1991, at the age of 32, Barbara ran for the same council seat that her husband held after he retired at the end of two terms. Based off the political clout of her last name in the local area, as well as her strong union and nurses connections, she won. But her reign as councilor did not last long. Concerned with the direction of the country as a whole, Barbara ran for the riding of Bolsover. Despite a few pundits questioning her ability to win as a woman in a more socially conservative-minded seat, she was elected comfortably on a nation-wide Labour swing in 1992.

During her time in parliament, Barbara was known as a fiercely pro-worker candidate and a traditional working-class socialist. In 1994, Barbara came under some fire for the treatment of staffers in her office and many local newspapers used this information in an attempt to discredit her. According to sources in her own office, Barbara would sometimes burst into fits of rage over issues whether they be small or large. Although nothing was specifically noted, apparently her local office would also have to purchase new office chairs because they were broken. One staffer also told the media that she was concerned of 'New Labour' infiltrators into her office during and after the 1997 General Election. This would often lead to the sacking of many staffers for supposed allegiances to the right of the party, those who strongly supported Tom Blake.

This skepticism of New Labour brought her head-to-head with the Labour National Executive Committee, people she blasted as "yuppie conservatives". She would often vote against the government on some of the more neoliberal measures of the Tony Blair government, including voting against the Iraq War. Barbara was very supportive of Bennett being elected Labour leader in 2015, often going on national television on the lead up to the vote championing her cause. Due to this, she is considered one of her closest allies in the Labour Party. Barbara campaigned to leave the European Union in 2016 and has stringently opposed a second referendum at all costs. As of late, her bullish nature granted her the nickname of the "Babushka of Bolsover", but she is still very popular among her constituents.

Biography:

Charles was born in Dover on 28 March 1967. He was the younger son of Jacob Henderson, editor of The Daily Telegraph newspaper, and Barbara Morris, daughter of a Conservative Party MP. Charles attended Ashdown House, a preparatory boarding school in East Sussex. He managed to gain a King's Scholarship to study at Eton College; he was described as an excellent student but one that was socially awkward. Charlies studied Mathematics at University of St Andrews, where he graduated with an upper second-class honours degree in 1989. Charles decided to continue his studies abroad, attending Stanford University, where he earned a Ford Dorsey Master's in International Policy. For the next two years, he attended Harvard Business School where he earned an MBA (Master Business Administration).

In 1993, he became financial analyst at the corporate finance division of Chase Bank in London. In 1996, he was hired as a consultant at McKinsey & Company in London, focusing primarily on the telecommunications and financial services industries. In 2001, he entered politics as that year's national elections, he was selected as the Conservative candidate for The Wrekin in Shropshire. He managed to gain a substantial percentage but lost to the the incumbent Labour MP by a slim margin. In his electoral campaign, though, he managed to garner media attention that was disproportional to his political size. His controversial comments allowed him to establish the reputation of a staunch fiscal and social conservative, well to the right of his party. In 2003, he criticized the then leadership of the party for it's efforts to increase representation of ethnic minorities on the party candidate list, arguing that such quotas were undemocratic and did not represent the country.

His disagreements with party line over a variety of issues, led him to eventually become a member of UKIP that same year. Charles gained notoriety as a debater in various news panels where he was called to represent his new party. He became increasingly popular among the membership, even overshadowing elected MEPs. In the 2004 European Elections, UKIP saw a large increase in support (6.5%) and Charles was elected MEP. His fiery speeches in the European Parliament and his attacks on EU officials further elevated his profile among Euroskeptic voters.

As the party leader, Roger Holmes, had to resign due to unexpected health issues in late 2006, Charles entered the leadership race and managed to overwhelmingly defeat his opponents and become the new leader of the party. He turned UKIP to the right and tried to shift its image of a singe-issue party. He gave it an ideological platform of fiscal conservatism, reducing taxes and immigration, reintroducing Grammar Schols and denying climate change. He accused the then leader of the Conservatives, Daniel Campion, of being a socialist interested in "gay marriage, foreign aid, and wind farms". In 2009 European elections, UKIP finished second with 15.6% of the vote and 13 seats, putting pressure on the Conservatives.

Charles moved the party further to the right, emphasizing the opposition to migration and 'Islamic extremism'. In the 2010 general elections, UKIP won 3.1% of the vote but failed to elect any seats. Charles managed to remain in his position as party leader after a close leadership election and turned the attention of the party to austerity instead. He argued that the 'globalist elites' wanted to place the burden of the crisis on the backs 'of the people'. The party became more populist, emulating less the Thatcherite-Reaganite right Charles used to support and instead looking more and more like continental nationalist parties. This was derided by some commentators who pointed out Charles' eccentric upper class manners and privileged background but Charles was able to successfully argue that he wasn't part of the 'liberal elites'.

In the 2013 elections, UKIP performed extremely well with an average of 23% in the wards where it stood, and increasing its number of elected councillors from 4 to 147. In the 2014 local elections, UKIP won 163 seats, an increase of 128, but did not take control of any council. In the 2014 European Parliament elections, UKIP received the greatest number of votes (27.5%) of any British party, producing 24 MEPs. Charles became a household name and his electoral success prompted the Conservatives to promise a referendum on UK membership in the EU. UKIP won 12.6% of the vote in the 2015 elections, but elected only 1 MP.

As promised, the Conservatives called a referendum on British membership in the European Union. Charles campaigned for Brexit, emphasizing the negative effects of mass migration and of EU regulations. The British voters supported Brexit. With the campaign to leave the EU a success, Charles resigned from the leadership of UKIP. Charles visited the US, where he managed to meet with US Presidential candidate [Trump] and expressed his support for him. Charles did not contest in the 2017 general elections. On 4 December 2018, he announced he was leaving UKIP and in February he announced the creation of a new political party, 'Brexit Party'. "We will make sure that the result of the referendum shall be respected and that the Conservatives shall not bring us a 'soft Brexit', essentially a 'No-Brexit' " he stated.

The Brexit Party has been molded by Charles into a right-wing libertarian-populist party. Aside from its strict support of hard Brexit, it attacks 'climate socialism', supports large-scale cuts in income and corporate taxation, abolishing the BBC fee, ending 'mass immigration and taking control of our borders' and cutting back 'regulations and red tape': it believes it can thus turn Britain into the European Singapore. It attacks the Conservatives on two fronts: that they don't want to deliver 'clear' Brexit and that they have abandoned conservative principles in favor of 'lite socialism'.

Character Constituency of Residence: York Central
Character Party Affiliation: Labour
Main Strengths: Strong experience, appeals to both socialist and centrist sides of the Labour Party, intellegent, decisive.
Main Weaknesses: Makes frequent gaffes, makes contraversial and divisive statements on occasion, overall a somewhat difficult person.
Biography:
David Myles Richardson was born on the 30th October 1960 to a middle class family in a village in East Yorkshire near Beverley, where Richardson attended the local primary school. Richardson was noted by teachers to be intellegent but boisterous and unruly. Much to his discontent, Richardson's family moved from the village to the nearby city of York in 1968 due to Richardson's father's job as a consultant psychiatrist. Richardson, however, settled in to this environment soon enough and earned several O-levels and CSEs in maths, sciences and humanities, before earning A-levels in Politics, Engineering and Economics, and then completing a bachelor's degree at Durham University in Politics and Economics.

Richardson became a member of the Labour Party Young Socialists in 1976, and took an active role in its North Yorkshire branch. He took a comparably moderate position to most of its members who supported the Militant Tendency group. This led to him eventually leaving the LPYS after he argued for Michael Foot to resign after the 1983 election result, calling him "useless" and "unelectable." He continued, however, to remain a member of the Labour Party, and strongly supported Neville Kirkbride's denunciation of the Militant Tendency at the 1985 party conference.

Starting in 1984, Richardson worked for the City of York council, collecting and analyzing data for them. He was then nominated to stand for the Heworth Ward on the council and he accepted such nomination. He was then elected in 1988 to serve as part of the City of York labour administration at the time, where he worked notably and tirelessly and was thus nominated by the party to stand for the marginal seat of the City of York in 1992, where he managed to win the seat for Labour for the first time since 1979, easily overturning the tiny conservative majority of 147 there achieved at the 1987 election.

Shortly after the election, Richardson was appointed as a Shadow Parliamentary Under-secretary for Transport, and was loyal to the party whip. Richardson spent the first two years of his time in parliament advocating for better and more energy-efficient public transport links for the United Kingdom, particularly the north of England where he held his seat. He was also sceptical of Jack Monroe's privatisation of the railways.

Richardson supported Tom Blake at the 1994 labour leadership election, and was promoted to shadow Minister of State for Transport shortly after Blake took office. He once again argued for more spending on and the electrification of rail routes in the north of England, and emphatically supported a "long overdue" proposed tram system in Leeds.

He retained his seat with a stonking mandate at the 1997 general election, acheiving a majoriy of over 20,000 in what was, less than 20 years before, a seat held with a tory majority of over 3,500. He then assumed a ministerial position and went about attempting to acheive what he had intended to achieve in opposition, and influenced the Department for Transport to increase investment in mostly northern and forgotten communities.

His pivotal role in this respect resulted in him being upgraded to Secretary of State for Transport in 1998, when he became increasingly constrained by finances and bureaucracy, so had to temporarily set aside most of his ambitious plans, but still set about increasing investment in especially historically downtrodden communities.

He was a major figure on the Labour Party campaign trail in the 2001 General Election, during which he promised "huge investment in ambitious plans for the entirity of our country when it comes to transport" if labour were elected and also stated that these investments will "affect every inch of Britain" and that "no place will be left behind for as long as I am transport minister."

Richardson retained his seat at the 2001 general election with a majority of 13,779. He set to work in his department, although after 9/11 he began to develop a rift with the Prime Minister, due to his emphatic support for (not-Bush)'s war on terror, which Richardson was sceptical of. However, at least for the time being, Richardson mostly ignored this rift as he "had more important things to focus on for [his] department, like delivering on our election promises and securing funding for the Leeds supertram scheme," which he succesfully did in 2002.

Richardson was "appalled" at plans to invade Iraq in 2002, claiming that it was "ridiculous to start a conflict that will ultimately take thousands of lives when there is a clear diplomatic alternative," and that "we should take the sensible stance of our French and German partners, we are strong allies with the USA, but that does not mean that we are their puppets."

His noticable difference in attitude to the PM on this matter led to increasing calls for him to resign, which he eventually did reluctantly in February 2003, after it being speculated that the PM was planning to fire him. His official reasoning was so he could vote against the Iraq War, and denied any claims that he had been pressured by any senior Labour figures to resign.

This led to him returning to the backbenches where he fiercely and furiously argued against the Iraq War and frequently rebelled against the government on foreign policy motions, but mostly kept in line when it came to other bills proposed by the government. He retained his seat at the 2005 General Election, with a majority of over 10,000. He attributed the labour party's majority being cut from over 150 to 66 at the election to the "catastrophe" of the Iraq War.

After the 2005 election, he published a book entitled "English Nationalism: The Superiority Complex," criticising nationalists for assuming a false sense of British superiority and power rather than engaing in sensible and logical decisions. He also began to criticise the tabloid newspapers, especially after the phone hacking scandal of 2011, calling them "corrupt" and "manipulative," and was seen ripping up a copy of the Daily Mail, with the 'enemies of the people' headline, on a live TV interview in November 2016.

Richardson hit national headlines in 2007 after he publically came out as bisexual and said that he "had a huge weight lifted from his shoulders." When questioned about the fact that this could put his marriage in jeopardy, he claimed his family had "known for years about this, and they accept me for who I am." Richardson has been a major supporter of the LGBT rights movement since his outing.

He was a major voice for the adoption of Keynesian monetary measures after the 2008 crash, claiming it had shown that "deregulation has failed us miserably" and that the world must seek a new and more interventionist economic apporach he described as "new Keynesianism."

Electoral boundary changes meant that Richardson's seat was split into York Central and York Outer for the 2010 general election, in which Richardson stood in the solidly labour York Central seat and won with a majority of 6,451. Richardson blamed labour's wider election loss on the party's "stubborn retention of the previous economic policy, which, as history has shown, is the worst possible response to an economic crash."

Richardson supported Ted Merriment for the labour leadership contest in 2010, and developed a close relationship with Merriment and supported his changes to the Labour party that shifted it away from Blakeism. Richardson's close relationship with Merriment resulted in him being appointed shadow justice minister in 2012, where he argued against "hypocritical" budget cuts to the prison system.

Richardson retained his seat at the 2015 general election with an increased majority of 6,716. He originally supported (not Burnham) at the 2015 leadership election, although pledged his "full support" to Bennett after she was elected, and was promoted to shadow secretary of state for justice after the election, where he advocated for an end to austerity in the prison sector, the complete removal and replacement of IPPs, and more community service sentences rather than prison sentences or fines.

Richardson campaigned to remain in the 2016 EU Referendum. He was emphatically passionate about the issue and allegedly criticised Bennett for her lack of enthusiasm for the matter. He described the ultimate defeat of the remain campaign as "crushing" and was accused of suggesting the leave campaign only won because they had the "establishment media" on their side, a suggestion he later denied.

Despite his emphatic support for remain prior to the referendum, Richardson almost immediately said that he would "respect the result of the referendum," and called suggestions for a second one so soon after the last one "bizzare and ridiculous." However, he rejected any proposition to leave the EU Customs Union and the EEA, claiming that Vote Leave had promised to remain in such organisations after brexit and as a result it would be undemocratic and scheming of them to "abuse" the result to "push an extremist agenda the public didn't vote for."

Despite his alleged critical comments made back during the Referendum campaign, he defended Bennett in the 2016 labour leadership challenge and stayed on as a cabinet minister.

He retained his seat at the 2017 general election, with a majority of over 18,000, the largest he had had since 1997. He described the election result as "a message that the established order is about to go, and that a new kind of politics will take over." He also declared that "we have beaten the establishment for the first time since they took a stranglehold on power in 1979." He was later questioned as to why he served in Tom Blake's cabinet when he was clearly implying Blake's vision and views were no different to that of the conservative party in this declaration.

However, by new year 2018, Richardson began to become at odds with Bennett as she took an indecisive Brexit stance and began to lean towards a second referendum, something Richardson has always been opposed to. He also privately disagreed with Bennett over "unnecessary and hypocritical" cabinet firings.

He resigned as shadow secretary of state for justice in September 2018 after the labour party conference voted to support a second referendum, stating "it is too difficult for me to work in an indecisive shadow cabinet that one minute adopts a policy and sacks shadow ministers for supporting a contrary one, and then literally weeks later decides to adopt the contrary policy it has sacked shadow ministers for and then decides it will hound out shadow ministers who still support the original policy. It is almost as if one side thinks X will happen, the other side thinks Y will happen, and Mrs Bennett decides on Z."

He has now returned to the backbenches, but remains an extremely influential labour party figure.

NHS: Supports limited privatization of certain services (arguing that they could be better provided by the private sector for the state rather than having the state provide them directly) and cooperation between state-run and private hospitals. At the same time, though, he promises greater funding for the NHS.
Home Affairs: Supports tougher sentences, wants to increase funding for the police and the number of police officers in the streets by hiring more policemen. For Islamic terrorists, he supports life sentence without parole.
Same-sex marriage: Opposed.

Merely as a suggestion, I would recommend if the app makes a light change towards a more Farage-esque character, merely as certain aspects of the character, namely their House of Commons career, are unsuited to the character. You could however then elongate the European Parliament career as a result.

I've edited his political career, so that he failed to get elected in 2001, left the Conservatives earlier and became an MEP in the 2004 EU elections.

I’d suggest changing some of the biography, particularly the first part as it follows too closely to Jacob Rees-Mogg, I’d recommend changing the birthplace and University.

I've changed some of his biography: his birthplace to Dover and University to St Andrew and also changed a bit his employment history, though I kept the part of him being son of a DT editor and the rest of his education.

EDIT: Just a bit of a personal preference of mine, but I would rather if my character kept the whole upper class/traditionalist performance rather than just being pure Farage-esque, if that is possible and acceptable to you. :)

Character Constituency of Origin: Barking
Character Constituency of Residence: Barking
Character Party Affiliation: Labour
Main Strengths: Young, diligent
Main Weaknesses: inexperienced, timid
Biography: Emma Beasley was born on July 4, 1986 in London to a middle class family. Her parents are both teachers, her father David Beasley is a history teacher, while her mother Sylvia Beasley (nee Keenan) teaches English at Riverside School in London. She has two siblings, Susan and Tim. She joined the Labour Party at the age of 16, first campaigning for the Labour Party in 2003 during that year's local elections campaign. A timid and shy teenager, Beasley proved herself to be a diligent volunteer nontheless.

Beasley graduated with a degree in journalism in 2007 before becoming a parliamentary researcher and assistant to a backbencher Labour MP in 2009. She would write a number of articles in the two years between her graduation and being hired by the aforementioned MP, mostly for smaller publications, some of them online based. In 2016, during the campaigning period that preceeded the 2016 United Kingdom European Union membership referendum she partook in the effort to support the Remain campaign. Dismayed by the results of the referendum Beasley eventually stated that "The results [of the 2016 referendum] must be respected. [...] We need to focus on delivering Brexit that benefits the working class.". A long time Labour Party member she was selected in 2017 to contest the Barking constituency after the incumbent retired. She won the safe Labour seat at the 2017 General Election, entering the House of Commons at the age of 31.

In her first two years as MP she worked closely with the Socialist Campaign Group and Momentum among others as well as [not-Denis Skinner] and [not-Jeremy Corbyn] establishing a track record of supporting left-wing policies and stances. During her maiden speech Beasley stressed the need for government action regarding wealth and income inequality as well as stressing the need for expanded public housing. Her co-operation with the two long-time MPs, particularly [not-Skinner] has led to her becoming a slightly bolder and more outspoken politician. She enjoys a decent amount of popularity among younger, more left leaning voters and is known for her social media engagements.

An advocate of environmental conservation and climate change she was appointed to the Shadow Cabinet in earky 2019 as the Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. She is a supporter of nuclear, wind and solar energy. An advocate for limiting the usage of fossil fuels Beasley supports the Green Industrial Revolution, a transformative program which aims, among other things, to provide people working with fossil fuels jobs in different sectors.

She has been engaged since 2016.

Other Info:

Brexit: Beasley is personally in favour of the United Kingdom remaining in the European Union. She campaigned for Remain in 2016, but since then stated that the "The results [of the 2016 referendum] must be respected. [...] We need to focus on delivering Brexit that benefits the working class."
Socially progressive: Beasley supports LGBT rights, descirbes herself as a feminist and pro-choice.
Helathcare: Supports more funding for the NHS, strongly opposed to privitization.
Environment: Very green, supports the idea of a European Green New Deal.
Taxation: Supports progressive taxation.
Voting reform: Supports voting reform, either in form of FPP with RCV or the abolition of FPP alltogehter.
Climate change: Supports the "Green Industrial Revolution", thinks drastic steps need to be taken to counter climate change.
