The sound of the bell of gion shoja echoes the impermanence of all things. The hue of the flowers of the teak tree declares that they who flourish must be brought low. Yea, the proud ones are but for a moment, like an evening dream in springtime. The mighty are destroyed at the last, they are but as the dust before the wind. — The Tale of the Heike

The Pokemon Nation, unified for centuries under the rule of Emperors reigning in Enju, is crumbling. The death of the last Emperor, leaving only a two-year-old son as his heir, has created a vacuum. The court at Enju led by the Empress Regent Fujitsubo no Taiga of the powerful Fujitsubo Clan of Asagi City controls the child Emperor. The Empress’ family has begun a purge of their enemies, the culmination of decades of internal fighting between the powerful clans of Johto-Kanto for control over the court and the Emperor.

This has been too much to bear for many of the Daimyo, who are now plotting against the Empress. While she still has many supporters, the stage is set for a confrontation to decide the real power behind the throne. Meanwhile, outside of the halls of the Capital, trouble is brewing. A self-proclaimed wizard and holy man has begun a social revolution and killed a Daimyo. Banners are being raised and forced assembled. The time of war is coming, a time of warlords and warriors.

Premise and Setting

Welcome to Pokemon: Warlords and Warriors! In this RP, you take the role a Pokemon trainer thrust into a setting based on early medieval Japan. The action will take place over the regions of Johto-Kanto. As this RP is based on an earlier era, Pokemon created by humans in recent eras will not be played, such as Voltorb and Electrode; Porygon and its family; Mewtwo; Castform; Grimer and Muk; and Rotom. Mega Evolutions are also not available. In addition, the majority of Pokemon would be from the regions based on the Japanese isles, so Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh. It is possible to see Pokemon native to Kalos, but anything else would be extremely rare. I'm not forbidding it, but there needs to be a very good reason for them.

Will you make a bid as the most powerful Daimyo--the Shogun—or support the Imperial Family directly, or to simply profit off of the conflict? The choice is yours.

Important Information

The biggest difference is how battles will be played out. Battles can be played in one of two ways. In a general sense, battles between forces will take place as a massed battle, not unlike double or triple battles in the games, where the opposing sides duel en masse. The other option is the traditional way, 1 v 1 between the Daimyo. Battles fought in or around cities will determine who maintains control, whether it be the local Daimyo or the attacking forces; battles fought outside have no immediate effect but the defeated army must retreat to the closest friendly city.

I've given permission for Player Characters to pretty much have free reign with what types of Pokemon you can choose (within the reasons I previously mentioned). NPC characters, however, should abide by the type-speciality of their native cities. For example, NPC warriors from Lavender or Enju would have Ghost and Psychic-types.

Deposed Daimyo may choose to serve the Lord who defeated them or they may join the services of another Daimyo

The Daimyo do not technically own the land they possess but are given the exclusive right to use it and need to pay a certain percentage back to the Imperial Court, although in practice the lands are hereditary. That means they gain a sizeable income from the land. People who have court titles get a stipend from the government, as well. So although the titles are largely ceremonial they do confer economic benefits as well as show political favour. As a last point of reference technically each Daimyo is supposed to live in the capital, although given the political climate they only spend some time each year at the court. For our purposes, most characters will likely begin the RP at the Imperial Court before returning to their homes.

Because Pokeballs have yet to be invented, using Fly or Surf to travel are not recommended, as you can only carry a single (small) Pokemon with you. However, Fly can still be used for recon or to send messages quickly.

When calculating sizes of armies we are using the in-game populations of cities and towns multiplied by 10for balancing purposes. So, for example, Ecruteak has an in-game population of 44, which means it has 440 warriors to draw upon. Obviously this doesn't reflect the city's actual population, but it is the metric we'll be using to calculate warrior counts. This makes things a lot easier to manage from an RP perspective.

Because the Pokemon Games and this RP, in particular, has a focus on movement between areas, a standard “time to reach a place” will be a feature. For our purposes, it takes a full day to move between cities, one extra day if moving through a forest, and two if moving through mountains.

In keeping with a more “traditional” feel, city and town names should reflect the Japanese originals. Ecruteak City, for example, would be called “The Capital” or “Enju City.” You can find the full list here: https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki ... _and_towns

Moreover, because this is a Pre-Modern Pokemon world, the hours of the day and years require some changes. The year will always refer to the year since the start of the Emperor’s reign. The hours of the day correspond to twelve, two hour periods, named after the animals of the Zodiac (but with a Pokemon twist):

Rattata: 11 P.M to 1 A.M
Tauros: 1 A.M to 3 A.M
Arcanine: 3 A.M to 5 A.M
Nidoran: 5 A.M to 7 A.M
Dragonair: 7 A.M to 9 A.M
Ekans: 9 A.M to 11 A.M
Rapidash: 11 A.M to 1 P.M
Mareep: 1 P.M to 3 P.M
Mankey: 3 P.M to 5 P.M
Torchic: 5 P.M to 7 P.M
Houndour: 7 P.M to 9 P.M
Piloswine: 9 P.M to 11 P.M

Most nobles have an associated Court Office, which corresponds to his or her official duties in the government. As mentioned, these are mostly ceremonial but do confer prestige and are highly coveted. Under the Emperor is a complex bureaucracy of positions and officials and if you choose to play as a Daimyo or a courtier, you may include one of these ranks or offices. In brief, the government is divided into two main groups: the Council of State and the Ministries. The Council of State functions as the Emperor's Privy Council and the primary organ of governance and made up of the Chancellor, Minister of the Left, Minister of the Right, Minister of the Centre, Major Counselor, Middle Counselor, Minor Counselor, and each of their assistants.

The Eight Ministeries, meanwhile head the vast bureaucracy under the Council of State. They are the Ministery of the Centre, Ministry of Ceremonies, Ministry of Administrations, Ministry of Popular Affairs, Ministry of War, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of the Treasury, and the Ministry of the Imperial Household.

Nation Name: Brit
Character Name: Tachibana no Kimiko
Appearance:
Age: 16
Gender/Sex: Female
Profession: Courtier
Court Rank: Assistant to the Chief Chronicler
Area of Control : N/A
Currently serving : The Imperial Court
Home: The Capital
Biography: The only daughter of Tachibana no Matsuba, the heir of the influential Tachibana clan and a relative of the Empress Regent, Kimiko grew up in the close-knit clan, where absolute loyalty to the clan was above loyalty to even the Emperor. She was born a few years after a major rebellion, and Kimiko grew up with stories of the war and she gained an aptitude for history and poetry as a result. Matsuba made sure his daughter received the best possible education and included Pokemon training and battling, foretelling the dark days ahead. From a young age, the girl was attracted to the macabre and spiritual, as was the custom and speciality of her family.

During the purges of the Fujitsubo Clan, the Tachibana supported the Empress and her family and were thus spared the destruction, and Kimiko participated as she hoped that this would centralise power and prevent any more fighting. As it were, the betrayal of the Fujitsubo Clan set into motion a series of events that Kimiko now fears will send the Nation into the abyss of war.
Personality: Kimiko is kind, polite, and gentle. A soft-spoken girl, her interest in the spiritual and dark side makes her somewhat of an enigma to the rest of the Imperial Court. She hopes that the coming conflicts will be short, but fears they may persist. The recent purges by the Imperial Family have given rise to a certain neurosis in Kimiko, as she now believes that anyone within the Capital is a prisoner. She hopes to survive the coming war and will do her best to chronicle it so future generations will have a record of it.

Nation Name:The Anarcho Syndicalist Commune
Character Name: Suke, Sage of Shion
Appearance: Image
Age: 73
Gender/Sex: Male
Profession: His position is equivalent to Daimyo
Court Rank: N/A
Area of Control: Shion, or Lavender Town
Currently serving: N/A
Home: Shion

Biography: The Sage of Shion is a mysterious figure to most of the Empire, a relative newcomer onto the political stage and considered an interloper by most. His early life is a mystery, though what is known is that he is not a native to the Empire. Most accounts place him arriving across the great sea in a boat during his early twenties. Even then however, the Sage was filled with wisdom and knowledge even at that early age. He began to wander the Empire, speaking on subjects of Willpower, Spirit, and Knowledge, and their relationship with reality. He taught men to harness their own power. Eventually, on the invitation of the Emperor, Suke made his way to Enju, where he spoke for days with the Emperor, and to the surprise of many was allowed an audience with the Tower Guardians. While the Emperor held his court once more, the Sage met with both of the Guardians, and descended from the towers once more.

Entering the Imperial Palace, the Sage delivered his next prophecy to the entire Imperial Court. The Emperor and his family had lost not only the mandate of their people, but the mandate of the land itself, as he had divined from the tower guardians. The Sage remained calm as he foretold the doom of the Empire and the Imperial Family, before he dissappeared with a flash and a bang, becoming sort of a local legend in Enju in the process. To the Imperial Court, and Johto province, the Sage was never heard of again. He retreated back to Kanto, where he began to gather followers, proclaiming the end of the Empire and the New Spiritual Age as he called it. For near 40 years Suke and his followers hid and skulked in the backwaters of the Empire, plotting and retrieving mysterious and seemingly unconnected artifacts. That changed recently, when the Sage seized Shion from it's Daimyo and proclaimed it the Capital of the new age, constructing within it a tower to rival those of Enju.

Personality: The Sage is mysterious and brooding at best, to cold and uncaring at worst. He carries about him an air of knowledge and through a variety of tricks paints himself as a powerful magician. Though he may not be a wizard as some claim, Suke is quite wise in the ways of the world and Pokemon and often knows how to bend them to his advantage. Overall, he is an enemy to be feared.

Pokemon:

Unari- Mightyena
Kiba- Houndoom
Sasa- Spiritomb
Misc. Info
N/A

Name: Unari
Species: Mightyena
Age: 41
Gender/Sex: Male
Appearance: Image
Master: Suke

Biography: Unari was found by Suke not long after he delivered his prophecy of doom to the Imperial court. Back then, the Sage was accompanied only by a Crobat, and when he stumbled upon the runty Poochyena, the Sage took him in. Under Suke's training on the road and the Sage's extensive knowledge of berry mixtures, the once runty Pokemon grew into a powerful Mightyena, who quickly became the Sage's favorite tool. Unquestionably loyal, fierce, and feared in the areas where the Sage has taken control, Unari is a Pokemon to be feared.
Personality: Unari, like all Mightyena, is completely loyal to his master. Though he shows kindness to other Mightyena, Unari is a naturally irate creature and when left to his own devices can commonly be found hunting in the streets and woodlands of Shion.
Moveset: Ice Fang
Crunch
Sucker Punch
Play Rough
Ability: Intimidate
Misc. Info

Name: Kiba
Species: Houndoom
Age: 20
Gender/Sex: Male
Appearance: Image
Master: Suke

Biography: Kiba is the result of one of Suke's experiments regarding the perfection of pokemon through breeding. Using a pack of Houndoom he and his men captured and a mysterious species he found in Cerulean cave. Kiba is his accepted end of the expirement. Born with a rare blue coat, Kiba is the strongest, the largest, and the most vicious Houndoom produced by the Sage's army and was given to the Sage himself shortly after his hatching. Under the Sage's hand, he has become a sharp guard dog and never leaves Suke's side.
Personality: A quiet and silent pokemon, Kiba is never seen away from his Master's side and will not act unless it is in defense of his master or he is commanded too.
Moveset: Inferno
Fire Fang
Bite
Smog
Ability: Early Bird
Misc. Info

Name: Sasa
Species: Spiritomb
Age: 1
Gender/Sex: Female
Appearance: Image
Master: Suke

Biography: When the Sage conquered Shion, he found in the opportunity to finally utilize a rare relic from his homeland, a strange artifact known as the Odd Keystone. When the Daimyo inevitably returned to defend her land, Suke made sure to keep her alive after the battle, and, after gathering what soldiers they had captured and a few of the towns folk of Shion, the world seemed to stop as Suke performed a long forgotten and forbidden ritual. Sacrificing his 108 prisoners to some dark entity, he bound their souls to the Daimyo's, before forcing the Daimyo and the rest into the Keystone, sealing them and creating the dreaded Pokemon known as a Spiritomb. Since then, it has been a near constant companion of the sage, forever bound to the Keystone he ties to his belt.
Personality: Bound as it is, Sasa has no discernible personality. It is a power conduit and tool of the sage. If one were to somehow unbind it and unleash it however, it would likely lash out with a passionate fury at anything that comes close.
Moveset: Hypnosis
Confuse Ray
Shadow Sneak
Ability: Infiltrator

Well considering he's the one who kicked the shitshow off, I wouldn't be shocked.

Indeed.

Is it reasonable to believe he had the former Daimyo killed?

Definitely interested in this - I've already got some vague ideas for a scholarly daimyo who controls Cinnabar Island and uses Blaziken and Rapidash - although I'm worried my lack of knowledge about medieval Japan might hurt my ability to participate in this.

That's okay, you don't need to be a scholar yourself to join. You just need really a basic understanding of how it works, which I or Google can provide.

Here we go again!

Nation Name: Miekzhemy
Character Name: Okugawa no Saki, Daimyo of Kikyō
Appearance:
Image

Age: 10
Gender/Sex: Female
Profession: Daimyo
Court Rank: Provisional Minor Captain of the Left Division of Inner Palace Guards
Area of Control: Kikyō, or Violet City
Currently serving (If Warrior or Courtier): Herself
Home: Kikyō
Biography:
Clan Okugawa of Kikyō have been prominent for generations. The clan has earned its respect through its strong grip and fair rule over much of the land around the Capital, as well as its unwavering dedication to the Emperor and the prosperity of the nation's people. The young Saki, only child of the late Daimyo Toshiharu, is the last of her family line. In the midst of purges and political intrigue, she inherited the title of Daimyo at a mere seven years old following a court rivalry that ended in tragedy. On a routine state visit to the Capital, Toshiharu and his wife were beset by unnamed assassins on the outskirts. They assaulted with deadly speed and efficiency, mercilessly slewing them before disappearing into the night, the plot never to be uncovered.

News reached the seat of their clan at Violet City in little time, sending the young Saki, the court and the people into despair over the loss of their beloved lord. Saki, being the only surviving member of the hereditary line, assumed the title of Daimyo and continued her rigorous education under regent and council. However, Saki was oblivious to the deeper and more complex intrigue that took place within her own court. In the first two years of her reign, public unrest overcame the surrounding towns and villages as Clan Okugawa's vassal lords grew corrupt and greedy. Tribute to their liege declined as they began to turn on one another. One by one, they broke off their allegiances to the Daimyo, and the once prosperous Okugawa clan grew smaller and smaller until all that remained of Saki's land was Kikyō and its surrounding villages.

Saki had become a mere puppet, and did not become aware of these schemes until it was almost too late. Her father's work was being undone, and her family name was being tarnished. Seeing the chaos and suffering that was brought to her people by the selfish desires of her subjects saddened her further. Perhaps the plot against her parents was devised and backed by these traitors? Her sadness would spiral into despair.

But it was not the end for her clan's legacy. With the help of her most loyal ministers and warriors, she gained the support of the military, and gathered all the evidence they needed for the next stage of their plan. When next the councilors were summoned, a coup was staged against them, and all their schemes were laid bare to the young Daimyo. After a moment of surprise, the realization finally dawned upon her.

Her surprise flared into anger until, in a fit of rage, she stepped up and demanded the traitorous subjects be forcefully deposed from her court. This sudden seizing of power would see her realm returned to its rightful owner. Corruption was all but snuffed out, and the will and support of her people was reinvigorated. And in the midst of Saki's triumph, her new council presented her with a plan - a plan to restore her clan to its rightful glory, and to see the Empire into a new age of prosperity.

And she thought it was a good plan indeed.
Personality:
Dutiful and surprisingly mature for her age, but a child at heart nonetheless. Her rigorous education and upbringing has led to her having a mostly professional front within the court, but her childlike impulses often cause her to slip past said front. She has also, due to her age and position as the only child of the former daimyo, grown accustomed to her rather pampered and spoiled lifestyle. Her council has taken strides to subdue potential tantrums or outbursts in the form of appeasing her every whim, which is usually effective but only in the short term. She has become a surprisingly adept pokemon duelist, but has often shown to be a sore loser in the occasions that she is bested. However, she has learned the immense responsibility that comes with her power, and the well-being of all her subjects weighs heavily on her thoughts - so long as she isn't preoccupied with other childlike activities.
Pokemon (no more than 3 to start):
Itten - Unown F
Ko - Rockruff
Banrai - Pichu
Misc. Info
The Unown is considered a rare, mysterious and widely-studied pokemon by her people, and was passed down to Saki after her father's passing. Also, she has an unending love and craving for sweets, despite trying to convince herself that it isn't appropriate.

Name: Itten
Species: Unown F
Age: Exact age unknown; presumably ancient
Gender/Sex: Genderless
Appearance:
Master: Daimyo Saki
Biography: The Unown have always been largely unlike any pokemon the Empire had seen - originating from ancient writings and hieroglyphs found carved and scribbled upon the walls of caves and ruins. In even rarer cases, these figures would come to life and mimic the behavior of any other pokemon, although unique characteristics and personalities are nigh-nonexistent. Itten in particular was one of these cases, being brought back to Kikyō to be presented to its ruling daimyo. And since then, it has yet to disobey commands or disappear, despite it being practically impossible to contain it. Because of this, it is assumed that this mysterious pokemon sees the Okugawa daimyo as its master.
Personality: Following its "taming" by Saki's ancestors, Itten essentially lacked any personality, simply resigning itself to walls and levitating by its master when called upon. However, following several generations of living in the company of humans, the little Unown has begun to display limited forms of playfulness. This is primarily in the form of hiding, and flying in and out of reach of those it "plays" with. This sudden influx of mischief has only persisted under the ownership of the young Daimyo Saki.
Moveset:
Hidden Power
Ability: Levitate
Misc. Info

Name: Ko
Species: Rockruff
Age: 8
Gender/Sex: Male
Appearance:
Master: Daimyo Saki
Biography: Ko is one of the young Daimyo's two trusted pokemon that has been in her ownership since she was little. He was gifted to Saki by her father, and has since been trained to keep her safe from harm. Saki hopes to one day see him evolve and grow in strength.
Personality: To describe Ko as docile and lazy would probably be an understatement. When not battling, training or playing, he is almost always sleeping or lounging around.
Moveset:
Sand Attack
Bite
Howl
Rock Throw
Ability: Keen Eye
Misc. Info

Name: Banrai
Species: Pichu
Age: 7
Gender/Sex: Male
Appearance:
Master: Daimyo Saki
Biography: Banrai is the second of the two pokemon gifted to Saki by her father, and has been her companion since she was very little. He has grown close to both the young Daimyo and Saki's rockruff, who he sees as lifelong friends.
Personality: In stark contrast to Ko, Banrai is headstrong and extremely energetic.
Moveset:
Thunder Shock
Tail Whip
Play Nice
Nuzzle
Ability: Static

I updated the OP a bit to include more details on Court Ranks. If there's any further confusion, looking up the historic Japanese Imperial Court could help.

Character Name: Fujitsubo no Taiga
Appearance:
Age: 21
Gender/Sex: Female
Profession: Imperial Regent
Court Rank: Empress Dowager
Area of Control: None officially, but in effect, she controls the Capital
Currently serving: Nominally her son, the Emperor. In reality, she and her clan.
Home: Originally Asagi; currently Enju
Biography: Taiga is the eldest daughter of Lord Fujitsubo no Kiyomori, one of the most powerful Daimyo in the Empire and the Chancellor. From an early age, Lord Kiyomori planned to marry Taiga off to a powerful noble. Through political manoeuvres, Kiyomori had Taiga betrothed to the heir to the throne. Educated both at home and in the court, she made a name for herself not just because of her great beauty and intellect, but by her ability to control and manipulate others made her a formidable player in court politics. She was one of many wives of the Emperor, but the first to bear him a son. Two years later, the Emperor died on his way to put down the rebellion in Shion, leaving behind a toddler on the throne. Upon the Emperor's death, the Fujitsubo Clan circumvented the other nobles in Ecruteak and cemented Taiga as the Regent for her young son. With her as Regent and Kiyomori as the Chancellor, their Clan's dreams of total control over the Nation seem complete, and now Taiga and her father are preparing to put down the last rebellions that threaten their power.
Personality: Charming, intelligent, and beautiful, Fujitsubo no Taiga also harbours ambitions and cunning that make her a worthy opponent both in the court and in Pokemon duels. Character Name: Fujitsubo no Kiyomori
Appearance:
Age: 51
Gender/Sex: Male
Profession: Daiymo of Asagi
Court Rank: Chancellor
Area of Control: Asagi
Currently serving: Himself
Home: Asagi
Biography: Lord Fujitsubo no Kiyomori did not begin life as one of the Nation's most powerful Daimyo. While his family had certainly been influential, they spent most of the preceding generations dutifully serving the Emperors in Enju as various administrators and counsellors. Kiyomori worked his way through the ranks as a young man and served in a number of bureaucratic roles. In his mid-twenties, however, a major rebellion broke out in Hoenn and through a number of events Kiyomori found himself defeating part of the uprising. The Emperor granted Kiyomori the city of Asagi, whose Daimyo has died without issue, as a fief. The ambitious noble began to build his power base. Kiyomori defeated another rebellion in Kanto that cemented his role as one of the preeminent lords in the realm and found himself appointed Chancellor. Through his political connexions, Kiyomori had his eldest daughter betrothed to Crown Prince, thus securing his power in the court. Lord Kiyomori forced the Emperor to retire and live a cloistered life of solitude and study, and with his son-in-law on the throne kept a close eye on the Emperor. A few years later, his daughter Taiga gave birth to a son and now a Fujitsubo grandson would likely be the next Emperor.

Tragedy soon struck, when the Emperor died on his way to bring justice to the so-called Sage of Shion. Kiyomori acted quickly and began a purge of his political opponents in the Capital and made sure his daughter remained as the regent for his grandson, with himself controlling the real government as Chancellor. From his fortress as Asagi, Lord Kiyomori is the true leader of the Empire.
Personality: Vain, manipulative, and utterly ruthless, Lord Kiyomori is not one to be trifled with. He has ruled the Nation either through subtle manipulation or directly for the better part of a decade, and he will stop at nothing to secure his Clan as the most powerful in the Empire.
