The Karifistan Civil War (IC) (FULL.)

Postby The Gray Devils » Tue Jan 07, 2020 12:30 pm

Under the direct orders of General Zamad al-Fajuuk, and the approval of Emir Nasser Alizai, the Karifistan Civil Guard have launched a massive offensive against the Quazir region. Two thousand Civil Guard and four armored brigades are diverging just north of Nahariim city and then branching apart into four separate offensive units once they cross the regional line into Quazir.

The KCG have verified six major guerrilla defensive points. Two of which are Walo village and Wak Sindh town in southeastern Quazir. Both settlements are still moderately populated. Despite criticism of pending action against these two settlements, many argue that a majority of the remaining population are combatants and not to be considered civilians. These “many” being supporters of the Alizai Emirate.

The other positions are three rebel encampments/outposts along the border mountain range and an isolated outpost along the western Quazir border. Humanitarians fear that the massive operation will result in heavy collateral damage. Yesterday, the Emir announced that the offensive would be within twenty-four hours, and anyone who has not evacuated the area will be detained or eliminated. Border forces have been ordered to tighten security to the maximum to avoid guerrillas slipping into Iran and Pakistan. Only to return after the operation is complete.

As the KCG mount their offensive, allies of both factions without doubt will intervene in the operation.

The UHL 100 Falcon utility helicopter soared through the skies of northeastern Karifistan. The pilot could not help but gaze across the clear blue sky as he cruised the helicopter along at a maintained speed and elevation. The helicopter had just departed from a rebel stronghold in the mountains not twenty minutes prior, and was inbound for Walo village. It was currently serving as an ACC (Aerial Command Center) for the acting commander of Gray Devil operations in Karifistan, one Magnus Walgren, codenamed Ice Wolf.

Walgren sat in the back of the helicopter, wearing headphones and in his lap sat a glistening black laptop. He was adorned in tiger stripe desert patterned fatigues, and over his shirt he wore a solid black kevlar vest. He was an older man in his early forties, but still a fine officer and tactical advisor. And a capable enough soldier. His head was shaved completely bald, and his scruffy mustache and goatee were specked with gray hair. He had been specially selected for this mission, the superiors believing he could lead the operation to a success. A duty he fully intended to fulfill.

“This is Hotel, come in CO.” came a voice over his headset.

“Hotel, status update.” Walgren said into his mouthpiece.

“The KCG offensive has just crossed the blue line and are branching apart. One armored unit and a small number of their men are moving west, presumably to the lone Mujahir outpost. The rest are making their way to the east, one of the armored units is on a direct course to Walo village while the other two are enroute to Wak Sindh.”

Walgren bit his lower lip grimly, then asked ,”Have you notified the guerrillas?”

“Affirmative,” came the reply ,”they’re massing their strength at Walo and Wak Sindh as we speak.”

“Give me a layout on their defenses, Hotel.” Walgren said.

“Anti-tank mines have been placed along the roads at half mile intervals. And small bands of guerrillas are taking up positions along the various ridges and hills that frequent the roads. The guerrillas are lacing the grounds around Walo and Wak Sindh with claymore mines and other makeshift traps as we speak; snares, hunting traps, and they’ve also made makeshift tank traps.”

“Makeshift tank traps?” Walgren asked.

“They began digging deep pits and trenches yesterday and covering them with tarps they hide with sand and branches. The traps are deep enough that any tanks or other vehicles that slide in are effectively trapped and out of actions.”

Crafty. “Any further reports, Hotel?” Walgren asked.

“Negative,” Hotel replied ,”will update as the situation unfolds. The offensive forces are roughly two hours from Walo and Wak Sindh, and the rebels will unlikely delay their approach.”

“Understood, keep me updated Hotel, over and out.” Walgren said as the utility chopper soared on towards Walo village.

Somewhere Over Karifistan

The line of 31 Mercatusian-built F-230 Vulture Multi-Role fighters were about 12 miles from Walo. The fighters were based upon the American F-22, having the same stealth capabilities and overall shape, but it had many modifications. These planes had a higher capacity for weapons and ammo, as well as more powerful engines that made it faster, and it also had VTOL capability. "Target at 12 miles and closing, open internal hardpoint hatches and be on the lookout." said Specter over the radio. The pilots responded silently, opening the hatches that would let ordinance through. The plane's afterburners were on, and rapidly approaching Walo. Their orders were to destroy any anti-aircraft weapons and infantry that were kept there. "6 miles and closing." said Specter

"5 and closing."

"4 and closing."

"3 and closing."

"2 and closing."

"1 and closing."

The fighters had arrived over Walo, and began to circle, waiting for the order to attack.

    Zakuul, Karifistan
    Arrival of Polish Troops

Morning in the coastal city of Zakuul, Karifistan. The weather was sunny, burning hot for Europeans, but just another day for the locals. After an agreement was reached in the Sejm, Polish-Lithuanian Union had agreed to send ground troops to a country some of their soldiers haven't even heard of. They were apart of the "World Restoration Policy" initiated by the Polish government since 1954. It involved the restoration of Western dominance in certain region to bring stability and peace. The first wave of troops will numbered by up to 67,000 troops, which would depart from Riga and would be put into a short but crucial training. It was designed for them to adapt to Karifistani climate. Departing Riga at 0300 AM, the first contingent of Polish troops arrived in the country by 0900 AM, and arrived by January 2020. The troops celebrate new year from their ship, while it was somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea. The arrival of Polish troops was greeted by local citizens, others had negative thoughts as these soldier was here to establish a "colony" rather than establishing peace and order. After their arrival, Polish soldiers would be transferred to the capital, where they would undergone a training before entering real combat in the north. Up in the sky, Polish air force pilots had already began several mission. An aerial bombing mission was conducted in the rebel-held town of Samazty and several rebel camps in the north. No Polish land troops had saw combat as of now but according to Major-General Maciej Kacper, the head person of the mission, Polish soldiers on ground would enter the frontlines by next week or even more depending on the current physical situation of the soldiers stationed.

Airspace over Rebel Controlled territory
Arrival of the 4th Air Assualt Company
Four C-11 Globemasters steadily decreased altitude, while men inside loaded onto the Patria AMV's loaded inside, about 4 per Globemaster. Wheels went down on the Globemaster, as they neared the soil below. The crew-chiefs made sure everyone was ready, before all but one strapped themselves into the seats on the sides. The last one pressed the button for the rear hatch to open. The Patria's on pallettes flew out of the back of the C-11s, as they hit the ground, hard. The Men quickly unloaded, severing the ties holding the APCs in place. The men formed a perimeter around the LZ, as they where the forward force for a construction battalion to make a FOB in the region. Colonel Thomas Evergarden, hopped out of the command version of his Patria, the last one to be dropped onto the LZ. There where four Mechanized Platoons, one per Globemaster, with 4 Patria's per platoon. The first and third platoon took up sentry duty in the open area, while Second and fourth unloaded their E-tools and began to fill up sandbags and dig foxholes. Once the Company was in foxholes, and the Patria's behind sandbag cover, 1st Platoon Sent 2 Fireteams to the nearby hills, these fireteams had 2 riflemen, an LMG gunner, and the Fireteam leader, a LCPL.

They set up two forward observation posts, just an expanded foxhole with a tiny interior held up by wooden planks. These would be expanded in the future, but alas, not today's issue. They Called in for the Engineer Company, along with its sister company, a Combat Engineer company with Recovery vehicles, AT and AP mines, the works. The mortar section of the Company finished their dugout where they placed the two mortars they were allowed. These Soldiers had the Ratnik Style combat gear, aside from rifles. They where equipped with FAMAS and HK416 rifles, with the Ultimax 100 as the SAW, with a 60 round drum magazine. The company had an AT section on a platoon level, equipped with Carl Gustavs, with a Company Level Javelin. Back to the events, as the soldiers lie in wait for the Engineering companies to arrive. (OOC: construction will begin in 2nd post, end in 3rd)

Kovograd

It was around 10AM in the bustling capital city of Cerinda. People were going around about their daily lives, unknowing of what the Cerindan government was plotting to do next; as the civil strife in Karifistan has caught eye of the Politburo and the communist elite. Cerinda saw a lot of opportunities in Karifistan, a chance to spread its influence in that area of the region, it was also a chance to spread the idea of the revolution against corrupt and tyrannical regimes, although it was Shiites Islamic fundamentalists and not communist revolutionaries, it did not matter for Cerinda had already had tactical alliances with the likes of Iran and Hezbollah by what they perceived to be the greater enemy, and least some factions of the rebels were socialist, something Cerinda could count in supporting without too much scold from the public. And lastly, Cerinda would seek to tap into the nation's many natural resources, specifically its oil and rare minerals which would be beneficial to Cerinda's ever stagnating economy.

The head of the intelligence agency, Yuri Sakov would brief Supreme Leader Andrei Kamirov on the situation and how to act next if the government wish to achieve its goals in the overthrow of the Emir.

"Comrade Leader."

"Comrade Sakov, what do you have for me?"

"Civil war in Karifistan sir, rebel movements have rose against the Emir in the North-eastern part of the country." He then passed Kamirov the brief.

"What do you suggest we do dear comrade?" Asked Kamriov as he skimmed through the document handed to him

"It is my proposal that we send weapons and ammunition to the rebels along with our best advisors to train, equip and teach them the art of guerrilla warfare and how successfully launch an insurgency, I also believe we should provide "volunteers" of the People's Militia to fight alongside the rebels as already capitalist nations are sending their forces to support the Emir for their own imperialist interests."

"Very good comrade." Replied Kamirov. "I shall have the foreign minister to send a telegram to the rebels immediately.

The two would then shake hands before Sakov left the Supreme Leader's office.

    Zakuul, Karifistan
Second Wave Arrival Of Polish Troops

After the arrival of the first wave of troops to Karifistan, a second wave was send to the country. Under Operation Long Road, the Polish Army is set to send at least 99,000 troops to assist the Emirate against the rebels. Further addition will include 107 tanks, 17,000 artillery pieces, 5 destroyers, 3 aircraft carriers and 157 planes (bombers and fighters included). The first wave of Polish troops is currently undergoing training, and will be completed by Saturday. The second wave would undergone much shorter training but would still contain some valuable lesson. Currently, no Polish troops had saw combat on Karifistani soil, but after a recent report issued by Major-General Maciej Kacper, Polish troops could be send to combat by the next day. A new organization was also formed for the main purpose of coordination of Polish troops in Karifistan, the Polish High Command-Karifistan Division. The new command had already drawn up plans to secure territory from the rebels in the north. Operation Sokół was planned to take place on Wednesday. The main objective was to secure the the town of Wak Sindh and open a way for an invasion up north. Expected casualties, according to the Command, would number by up to one thousand troops. Carpet bombing would be conducted before the operation to destroy defensive positions and to minimalize the casualties.

EUL Troops see first action in Karifistan

After only one day since the deployment of the 15th Mechanized Infantry Regiment as part of Operation Tempest, the deployment of 3 000 troops and an undisclosed number of aircraft and helicopters to Karifistan, the EUL Army has already begun to see combat.

Red Zone (Rebel Occupied Area), Quazir Region, Karifistan

A 15th Regiment recon squad sent on an RIF (Recon-In-Force) mission to test enemy defensive capabilities and mark possible IED areas before preparing to advance it's major units. The squad of 8 had entered a very small village (less than 15 buildings) in the middle of a hill passage, after 10 minutes of patrol throughout the village, loud cracks in the air then the sounds of wizzing bullets passed by the formation, who immediatly too cover.
A group of rebels were holed up on a cliff in the mountainside with a DhsK heavy machine gun. Knowing that they did not have the firepower to take out the position, the squad leader ordered a withdrawal from the village and back to their nearby FOB, the enemy position was marked and an EUL MQ-1 Predator hit the HMG position killing 3 rebels.

Vicinity of Yaka Oboo, Quazir Region, Karifistan

The hills in the vicinity of Yaka Oboo rose softly from the Karifistani dirt, obscuring the danger that lay within. The contours of the terrain concealed the bulk of the structures thrown up in the fortified camp that sat like a spider between the village proper, the countryside and the border. Ostensibly a militia outpost, this was the forward operations base set up by the hundred or so GUVD Spetsnaz commandos sent in to support rebel operations against the Emir. Not that they were actually Spetsnaz anymore. For reasons of deniability, all of them had been dishonourably discharged with orders to make their way to Karifistan and regroup.

From the air, the camp looked like only so much dry hill-land due to the camouflage netting strung over everything that was recognisably man-made. Obviously, anyone using advanced optics for aerial reconnaissance or flying relatively low to the ground would have an easier time of spotting the position but the best way to locate the camp would be on foot, given that the assumption was that the enemy would opt for aerial recon flights as opposed to ground patrols this far into rebel territory. In case of attack, there were several MANPADs of varying types available to repel aircraft as well as a large stock of RPG-7 launchers for ground attacks. The camp's location had been well-chosen. There was only one route that vehicles could take without climbing the hills and exposing themselves and the hills themselves were bare, the only cover being solitary rocks dotted here and there.

Captain Nikolai Korelov, formerly of GUVD Spetsgruppa Duovograd, shifted his AK-105 from his shoulder as the faint sound of engines reached his ears. As the sound grew closer, more members of the unit took up positions to repel an attack. Carbines were aimed at the passage the vehicles would be coming through, joined rapidly by several RPGs. Slowly, a truck rolled into view, followed by another, and another, ten vehicles including the battered jeep that would take the drivers back across the border. Nikolai signaled for his men to stand down. The first truck ground to a halt as Nikolai approached. 'You're late,' he growled.

The other man sniffed, adjusting his balaclava. 'Wasn't easy getting this lot in and we had to drive all the way across the border.' Stretching, he began to make his way towards the jeep. 'You can keep the trucks.'

As the jeep disappeared into the distance, Nikolai joined the others in unloading the trucks once the battered vehicles had been parked in a line underneath the camouflage nets. Climbing over the tailgate, he began to hand long wooden boxes, each containing a number of Kalashnikov derivatives, to the nearest man. The small arms would be provided to friendly rebel groups in order to increase their effectiveness. They already had almost two thousand assorted rifles, light machineguns and launchers available to give away. Nikolai frowned as he shifted a boxes of bullets away, revealing a stack of large metal crates. He gestured for one of the others to help him. Grunting with effort, the two of them managed to shift one of the containers out of the truck. The locks came undone with crisp clicks. Nikolai flipped the lid open. A collective murmur ran through the crowd of watching Svadyetskans.

'That's a fucking missile.' Nikolai's second-in-command Qadr Ismailov whistled appreciatively. With an Arabesque appearance, he had the advantage of being able to pose as a local while the others would stand out as foreigners. He had volunteered to go, eager to avenge his father's execution at the hands of the first Emir. A third-generation nationalised Svadyetskan, he had joined the military, serving first in the PRGC before being poached by the GUVD.

'Several missiles.' Nikolai barked a few orders. Men rushed to the remaining trucks, excited chatter indicating the presence of more of the metal crates. Each would probably contain similar missiles or perhaps another model. The missiles were of a rather old vintage, appearing to lack any sort of guidance system. The question was, how were they launched? A shout from one of the trucks at the end of the line indicated the answer. The canvas cover over the back of the truck was pulled away, revealing a first-generation Katyusha MRL system. A second, then a third Katyusha was uncovered. Nikolai smiled. These could help turn the tide in a battle, dated as they were. Besides, no serious military would use an antique as a war weapon, would they? The Soviet government wouldn't cop the blame if the Karifistani Emir and his allies got their hands on this piece of history.

SIX MILES EAST OF WALO VILLAGE, LOW ALTITUDE OF ONE HUNDRED FEET

“Hotel, report.”

“This is Hotel,” came the crackling voice over Walgrens’ headset ,”we have an immediate development of high concern.”

“Clarify.” demanded Walgren.

“Rebel contacts in Zakuul, Arkatesh, and Nahariim have verified heavy support from Polish-Lithuanian forces. Roughly one hundred thousand personnel plus tank, artillery, and notable naval and air units. A full military support initiative.”

Walgren swore to himself and then asked ,”Anything further, Hotel?”

“Affirmative,” came the response ,”the Socialist Republic of Cerinda have forwarded a massive shipment of weapons for use against opposing forces. Very promising.” Walgren felt some of his uneasiness slip away as he listened to the listing of weaponry forwarded by the socialists. Hotel also informed him of the one hundred or so “specialists” sent in by Svadyetsk. Another socio-communist state supporting the rebellion against the pro-western capitalist regime. The rebels had released little on this operating unit other than they were well-knit and well armed, as well as well trained.

“Foreign intervention in this insurgency is increasing on both sides,” Hotel reported, slight exasperation in his voice ,”the EUL, New Rhodesia-Zimbabwe, Thakia, and the AI Empire notably. The rebels are shoring up all their defensive efforts at Walo and the western encampment namely. Yaka Oboo will primarily act as a resupply and relay outpost, as well as troop reinforcement. The Hazara and Tajik fighters are leading the defensive.”

Walgren nodded slightly, looking out of the helicopter window across the rolling desert and cliffs below. He adjusted his headset slightly and asked ,”Any bead on the KCG offensive?”

“Affirmative, it’s looking to begin within just hours. KCG infantry units and medium armor are forming up twenty clicks southeast of Zekit. Combat is expected to be centered in Walo and the area south of Samazty.”

“Roger,” Walgren said,” have our unit remain on standby. The rebels and their allies can lead the defensive charge here. We will remain on reserve for now.”

Under Construction FOB
By now, the Engineers had arrived and constructed a HESCO fort in the middle of nowhere, 1980s barracks, and everything! A small runway was built for fighter aircraft to take off and land, with most supplies being airdropped. Multiple Mechanized Companies, forming the 5th Mechanized Battalion, had arrived in the days following, along with Rhodesian SAS "A" teams arriving, bringing in As many insurgents as they could to train them on leadership, how to train other militiamen, how to operate ATGM and MANPAD systems, and basic marksmanship. The most promising of these insurgents where given Relatively modern gear and weapons, with the rest being given old AKM and RPGs. Some of these men walked away with Stinger MANPADs and Javelin AGTMs. These men would form insurgent companies that would hopefully liaison with the Rhodesians. They were working on organizing the Rhodesian friendly militias into a simple command structure under the Rhodesians, being supplied and trained by Rhodesian soldiers, with tactical and logistical issues handled by the Rhodesians, along with sending out liaison officers to try to coordinate with isolated Militia cells, even if they didn't accept being a part of the command structure, they were welcoming to the training and equipment. By
"Under Rhodesian command" This mainly meant they had advisors with command staff in the militia forces, advising them and acting as a communication point to give airstrike positions, along with coordinating logistical demands. Other than that, Forward observer teams had been placed near the hot zones on the border, along with small recon outposts manned by some Mechanized Platoons.

The colonel had been hard at work coordinating in the first few days, but things seemed to be calming down. Supply convoys where on daily runs through isolated villages on goodwill as well as supply missions to the insurgents. They were protected by armored vehicles, realizing the threat of counter-revolutionary militias that could be lurking. Some "Gun Trucks" of the Vietnam era had been adopted, with supply trucks modified with .50 cals, armored sides, and interior seating being all too common.

Situation Room
Presidential Palace
Thermodolia City

The President of Thermodolia Jacob Zarman sat at the head of the dark mahogany table, in front of him sat the military chiefs, the Secretary of State Steven Williams, the Secretary of Defense Andrea Summers, military advisers and along the back-wall hung several large monitors.

“Mr President”, a military intelligence officer was saying, “the situation in Karifistan is grim. The rebels have been getting support from several nations including socialist nations. We believe that a military intervention is necessary to prevent damage to our trade routes and influence in the region”

“What kind of damage to trade are we talking about here?”

“Well sir, Steven Williams began, “a nation in a civil war is less likely to buy our goods which means less trade for us. Plus the rebels are Islamists and are unlikely to support buying what they might call decadent and degenerate things”

President Zarman just nodded.

“If I may sir the only real way we could halt this is by providing air support and arms to the legitimate government. That way they can do the heavy lifting so we don’t have to have much of an investment in the off chance that the rebels win” Andrea stated.

“Very well dispatch the 23rd carrier group to the area and send a few bombers into the rebel held territory to soften them up. In the meantime inform the Emirate of our support”

Operation Falling Eagle
In the Skies above Rebel Territory

The two B-11 Condors had taken off from the Thermodolian air base in Socotra just a few hours ago. The bombers where armed with 10 cluster bombs similar to the American made CBU-97 and 4 AGM-114 Hellfire each. The Condors due to their low radar cross-section and infrared signatures are easily able to reach their targets of Walo and Wak Sindh and the surrounding area before anyone else was the wiser.

For a few moments they would be visible to any radar as the opened the bomb bay doors to deliver their deadly cargo. When the command was given 20 cluster bombs and 8 Hellfires rained down on the area below. Anything unlucky enough to be caught below was surely going to have a bad day.

Once the bay doors where closed the bombers fired up the afterburners and banked hard towards Samazty before turning around towards Zekit. The plan to remain over rebel territory was so that the bombers wouldn’t penetrate Iranian or Pakistani airspace, besides it was assumed that the rebels didn’t have any missiles capable of taking the bombers out.

Once the bombers where turned around they where to increase speed to Mach 1.7 and quickly get back to base.

Operation Falling Eagle
23rd Carrier Group
Near Madagascar

Final preparations where beginning as the fleet steamed towards the zone of operations.

While the 27th Carrier Group was technically closer the 23rd was the only group in the region that had stealth navy bombers aboard. These bombers would be essential to the operation especially if the rebels had SAMs

The group was to remain just outside of the territorial waters of the Emirate so as to avoid contact with any other fleet in the area.

As you might be aware by this point bombings have been conducted over rebel territory. These where conducted by us. We would like to assist your government further by conducting air strikes and maintaining air support of your troops.

If your government would be so kind as to hand us locations to be struck by our air forces that would be wonderful. In addition the Thermodolian government will be sending your nation funds, supplies, and weapons to maintain the fight against these rebels

Sincerely,
Steven Williams, Secretary of State

    Operation Samazty
    First Polish Engagement North
Image
Polish forces departing Zekit alongside several Karifistani governmental forces

Broad daylight in the town of Zekit. Last night, a small element of the Polish 2nd Army in Karifistan had moved into the town of Zekit. They were there to launch an offensive to secure a rebel-held position near the twon of Samazty. The small force was consisted on 4 tanks, 400 troops along with additional 240 Karifistani forces on the side of the Emir. Before departure, these soldiers would prepare themselves. Medical and food supply was brought to the town to provide the men enough supply for their advance ahead. The Courland Airmen, a division within the 1st Attack Squadron mainly consisted of pilots from the province of Courland, would conduct aerial reconnaissance to monitor defenses in the region. It was conducted for about an two hours before returning back to Nahariim. An order was give from Major-General Maciej Kacper that the men in Zekit had the permission to advance towards the rebel-held position up north. From the town, Karifistani governmental forces wave goodbye to their loved ones as they would depart towards an unknown faith. Instead of using vehicles to advance, the men from Zekit, now known as the 22nd Zekit Division, would walk up north mainly to not bring to many attention along the way. It took them atleast 9 hours before arriving around the combat zones.

" Agh..finally we can rest " said Private Marek after the sergeant allow the troops to have a 10 minute break

" You're not used to this type of climate city boy? " said Sergeant Markus after looking at Marek's reaction

" I am sir, i was born in the mountains, im not used to this kind of climate " explain Marek

" Well, you got to be ready for anything. We're not in Poland now kid, this is Karifistan, you gotta remember that " explain Sergeant Markus

Marek would reach for his bag and grab some drink. A patrol team was dispatched to ensure that the area ahead were clear for advance. Two minutes later, a gunshot could be heard from the distance alerting the forces there.

" That doesn't sounds like a good thing " said Sergeant Markus
" Alright gear up, were moving out now! " shout Markus

The troops would continue to move deeper into the region. Bomb explosions and gunshots could be heard from the distance, a signal they are entering hostile grounds. After a fifty-minute walk, they reach a small village. Upon entering the village the troops would be greeted by the locals. The villagers would provide the troops valuable intel on the whereabouts of enemy position.

" Sergeant Markus, one of the villagers said that rebel forces are just 4km ahead " explain Private Abdul Harba, a Karifistani soldier in Polish "

" Alright, were gonna move over there and perhaps we could take them down and make sure these villagers would be safe " said Sergeant Markus

After receiving the intel, the troops would move to a rebel held positions north of the village, only about 56 men followed, while the rest stayed in the village to guard it from any rebel threat. The location took about a one-hour walk to get there. The region currently contested between the Emir forces and the rebels, was another village, this time, it was much bigger. The village was completely abandoned, there was nothing except dust and several bullets laying on the street.
" This is too quiet..." said Private Jakob one of the soldiers that followed Sergeant Markus

" Alright stay sharp, this could be a trap " warn Sergeant Markus as he steadly aims his gun at a window, presuming there was somebody there

Shooters would suddenly came out from multiple windows in the village, gunfire was heard and the troops on the ground was confusued about what had happened. They soon realized it was an ambush. One of the soldiers reach for his pocket and threw a grenade at one of the window. The ambush would cause disarray between the troops. Their position was suddenly scrambled.

" IT'S AN AMBUSH! " shout Private Marke as he tried to shoot one of the fighters in one of the buildings

" THEY'RE ON THE WINDOW, SHOOT THEM! " order Sergeant Markus as he attempts to back up to a shop

" SIR, I THERE'S TOO MANY OF THEM WE HAVE TO RETREAT! " suggest Private Jakob as he reloads his gun

" NO! CALL IN THE TROOPS AT THE VILLAGE, TELL THEM WE NEED BACKUP! " order Sergeant Markus to Jakob

" Alright sir! " answer Private Jakob as he reaches for his radio and contacts the troops at the village

" ALPHA-1 THIS IS ALPHA-2 REQUESTING IMMEDIATE REINFORCEMENTS AT THE NORTHERN VILLAGE, WE ARE BEING AMBUSHED WE NEED IMMEDIATE ASSITANCE! " shout Private Jakob as he speaks to the radio

" Alright Alpha-1 we are coming, hold still " answer Private First Class Mikael Ondrej

The ambush would continue as the rebels manage to overwhelm Polish forces there. Sergeant Markus was able to hit one of the fighters. Private Markus on the other hand was struggling to survive as the fighters would rain shots, messing with his mind.

" GET IT TOGETHER, PRIVATE! " shouts Sergeant Markus to Marek

" Alright, sir! I CAN DO THIS! " said Marek as he manage to shoot one of the fighters before one of the bullets hit his hand

" SIR, MY HAND..." shout Marek as he looks into his wound with panic

" Alright, backup boy...we can't let you die " said Sergeant Markus as he drags Marek into the back of the shop

The fighting continues, before eventually, the long awaited reinforcements arrive. With the support of local villagers, they were able to defeat the fighters, securing the village and saving the lives of Polish soldiers. The fighters would retreat, and set up a defensive positions up north. The ambush took the live of two rebel fighters while the Poles suffer one including one injured soldier. After the fighting had ended, the troops would rearm and rest for couple of while. They receive information afterwards regarding the arrival of 4 tanks from Zekit which from there on, would assist their campaign.

Yaka Oboo

The truck bounced as it rattled its way into the village. Roads in this part of the world were not perfect strips of asphalt, smooth as a baby's bottom. When the lurching of the vehicle's motion stopped, Nikolai climbed out, dropping to the dusty earth with a soft thud as his boots made contact. The other five men also got out, the driver and two others waiting with the truck, ever alert for the appearance of hostiles or impoverished locals looking to steal the army-surplus vehicle. Nikolai headed towards the village centre with the other two men, leaving them to buy food supplies once they had gotten there. After several conversations with locals about the latest news, he signaled the truck to move closer to the market in order to facilitate the loading of the various foodstuffs that his men had purchased. Not that they actually needed them but it was better to preserve the military-grade rations for later.

Digesting the news that he had heard, Nikolai rode back to the camp, standing on the running board of the truck and holding onto the canvas cover. Qadr was waiting for him when he got back. 'The Katyushas are ready, Niko. We're rigging up the usual truck covers to go over them. Nobody will know what we've got.' Qadr's face betrayed his excitement. Nikolai cut him off before he could say more.

'I've been talking with the locals,' Nikolai said, looking up at the skies. 'Seems the Emir has planes bombing places all over. That, or he has friends who have planes that are doing the bombing.' Qadr swore in Arabic as Nikolai continued. 'We'll need something more than the pile of handheld launchers over there if we get attacked. Also someone said that their cousin's wife's brother's friend said that they saw troops somewhere but he couldn't say where. Not KCG.'

Qadr looked at him. 'You're thinking of getting more hardware in to cover us?' Nikolai nodded. Qadr whistled appreciatively. 'That should be fun. The bosses back in 'Grad won't be happy, seeing as this is meant to be a deniable operation.'

'Start talking to the local militia commanders.' Nikolai patted down the pouches of his vest, eventually locating his satellite phone. 'I have a call to make.'

* * * * *

After about an hour of walking in a more or less straight line, Nikolai looked back. Satisfied that the camp was not in any way visible from his current position, he took out the satellite phone and took off his watch, cradling it in one hand as he punched in the number he'd memorised. Once the last digit had been entered, he paused, waiting. The seconds hand on the watch ticked around. As it swept past the twelve, Nikolai hit the button to dial the number he'd just entered. There was a soft dial tone, interrupted occasionally by static. Finally, too long in Nikolai's opinion, there was a click as someone picked up the other end.

'Talk.' The voice was distorted, several octaves lower than one would expect from a normal voice. The voice was identifiably male but nothing else could be determined through the layers of encryption masking both his location and identity.

'We may have problems.' Nikolai kept one eye on his watch as he spoke. On average, it took five minutes for someone to trace a call, or so said the boffins from GUVD Headquarters. 'Local intelligence points to the presence of some form of international intervention on the Emir's side. It looks like some sort of offensive is planned or underway, given that we don't get intel as it happens. In addition to that, we have intel that rebel areas are being heavily bombed. We may need more than just MANPADs to deal with an attack.' Nikolai spoke quickly but clearly as time inched away. 'I'd like to requisition something bigger for AA purposes. If at all possible, of course. Even just more MAPADs might be a tide turner.'

There was a pause before the voice on the other end spoke again. 'I can see what we can do but it's likely that we won't be able to get anything highly effective. If push comes to shove, we'll send some kind of antiaircraft gun. Our people in Afghanistan can see about getting something untraceable from there. After all, we don't want all of you ending up splattered all over that damned country. We will look into planned operations against the rebels. Sit tight if it's not going to affect you but be prepared to retreat over the border if necessary.' The line went dead, leaving Nikolai alone in the Karifistani countryside. He checked his watch. Three minutes, forty-two seconds. Probably untraceable. Even if it wasn't he hadn't given away the camp's location. Putting away the satellite phone, Nikolai began to make the journey back to the camp.

Based on your suggestion that voiced by my son, some of the army generals and veterans we decided to covertly help the rebels of Karifistan. We will insert the 3rd Hexagon Battalion under your leadership into the northern part of Karifistan. You will go there first with a squad of 20 Penthievrean SOF by HAHO while the remaining will follow later. However if the airspace is full of the Imperialist plane, the remaining will be send out from the northern part of Karifistan by land. Meet the locals and their fighters and earn their trust. Gather intelligence about our enemy, especially the Imperialist Emir with them and if possible do a raid to shatter the enemy's morale in addition to get some loot. Don't forget to give intelligence that you have on the enemies to us too, we might plan ahead of them. You will also teach the fighters to improve their fighting proficiency and learn them to use weapons that seems new to them. Based on your idea, your operative will dress like locals and mercenaries with falsified passport to make confusion on the enemy and they cannot figure out our involvement.

Bless upon the kingdom

Walo Village, Quazir Region, Karifistan

Lieutenant Colonel Jan Harvick sat next to a Karifistan Rebel fighter who had a smoke after an air attack by the allies of the imperialist. His weapon, a Romanian version of AK-74 was on his lap, with an Elcan SpecterDR mounted on side-mount rail. Harvick had arrived at Walo Village two days after being inserted into Karifistan with the other nineteen operative and being dressed as villagers with their help. The Hexagon operatives observed the damage caused the air attack while helping the villagers to evacuate corpses and wounded villagers from the ruins.

Harvick had asked the rebel fighter about his weapon and the latter told him that he got the weapon and the modkit from a raid on a KCG military facility during the early part of the Karifistan Civil War. The Karifistan Rebel fighter also told him that originally they use antique hunting rifles and homemade pipebombs and Molotov before taking higher grade weaponry that they got in various ways, including being supplied by the outside party. Harvick was interested on the outside party that supplied the rebels the weapon, maybe he can contact them to topple the KCG.

The remaining Hexagon Battalion operatives were either talking with the locals or training the rebels.

The Karifistan Rebel fighter with Romanian AK-74 looked at Harvick’s weapon next to the owner and asked. “So how about your weapon?” He asked in curious on Harvick’s weapon.

Harvick answered calmly on the question. “This weapon is a sleek HK417. With long barrel, high-powered scope, match grade ammunition and user skill, this weapon is very accurate.” The Rebel Fighter with Romanian AK-74 listened carefully on Harvick's word before introducing himself. "My name's Jamal. Nice to meet you." He offered a handshake which Harvick obliged as he told Jamal his own name.

Jamal liked Harvick's name as the latter smiled before asking him on the latest situation. “What’s the catch on the civil war? Who bombed this village?”

Jamal threw away the cigarette butt and told Harvick darkly, “The allies of the Karifistan Imperialist bombed out our village before you arrived here and we holding on this village in the case Karifistan attacks to capture this village. The casualty isn't good either. There’s a fight between our fighters and the wretched imperialist around the town of Zekit which ended up the latter as victors. Some of the rebels that managed to retreat saw the involvement of Polish – Lithuanian Union on the attack. It only a matter of time the imperialist will attack again.” Harvick mentally noted the threat of the Karifistan Imperialist and foreign support, especially on this attack.

One of the Hexagon Battalion operative with a modified AKMS approached Harvick and spoke up. “Sir, the Village Leader is here.” Harvick looked up at the leader of the Walo Village, who was an elder. Despite his look, The Hexagon Battalion operative with modified AKMS knew he was a seasoned fighter despite his age. “His name is Yahya, the leader of the village who is anti-imperialist. He disliked Emir Nasser who was overly westernized. When the civil war broke out, this village sides with the rebel.” Jamal told Harvick as the latter stood up.

Yahya was the elder and leader of Walo Village that keep the youths of his village from the imperialist influence even before the civil war. Many villagers respected him by his wisdom and his military skills. Some of the Hexagon Battalion operative looked at his weapon in curious, which was an old H&K G3 with modified barrel and bolt to replace the worn one. Harvik soon approach Yahya and spoke up. “Sir, I am Jonathan Harvick, the leader of the 3rd Hexagon Battalion.” Yahya shook hands with Harvick as the former introduced himself.

Harvick informed Yahya about his intention. "We have intelligence on this civil war from your villagers, from the background on this war and foreign intervention both sides of the war. For the long term plan, we will gather and share intelligence between us, earn the trust with the other village that resist Emir and topple the imperialist goverment."

Yahya nodded in respect to Harvick before telling him something. “So you have heard it from the villagers? What they said are true and we have a problem now: After the Karifistan imperialists capture Zekit and bombed this village, the imperialists plans an offensive. We don’t have any intelligence on the strength, where or when they will attack, but we must defend this village at all costs if they attack this village!” Harvick had the same intention with Yahya: Defend Walo Village if it was attacked.

One of the Hexagon operatives snickered on the news while applauded Yahya’s determination. “Which means the wretched Emir tries to recapture the territory back but we make sure he won’t,” Yahya nodded at the statement before looking at Harvick. “Plans for defending this village? I have readied my able-bodied villagers to defend their home until the last man.”

Harvick observed the surrounding before telling Yahya. “Okay, this is the plan. Half of our operatives will on the front with the rebels. The five of the remaining ten will be marksmen and snipers and the other five will use ATGMs. Evacuate women and children out of the village in the case the imperialist does attack this village.” Yahya nodded before walking away to talk with one of the villagers to evacuate the non-combatants. Harvick meanwhile joined the other nineteen Penthievrean operatives to make a plan for the defense. “May Vektrelian God blesses us…” He prayed before planning the defense for the village.

Operation Falling Eagle
23rd Carrier Group
International Waters

Rear Admiral Georg Dênæ watched from the bridge of the TNS Willson Day as last minute preparations where taking place on the deck below. He was a tall man with dark hair and dark features to match his equally dark personality. He would stop at nothing to achieve his goals, that mentality had gotten him this far in life and he wouldn’t stop now. However like his president he wasn’t a man of words but preferred action over small talk, this way he kept most of his personality hidden from view.

The fleet had arrived off the coast of Karifistan early in the morning and had kept to being just outside of the territorial waters. That way no one could accuse them of being an invading force.

The two UM-03N Blue Phoenix MALE UAVs where being fitted with Long-Range Radar module pods, 4 air to ground missiles and 2 air to air missiles for defense. The Blue Phoenixes primary mission was to obtain targets as you can’t send bombers and fighters with no targets. The first two areas where the area around Samazty and the area around Wak Sindh. If any high value high risk targets where spotted then the plan was to send one of the two UF-05 'Sniper's UAVs to the area armed with a hellfire.

Rear Admiral Dênæ also had at his disposal a collection of aircraft based on Socotra to use to for whatever means they might be necessary. The bombers stationed there would definitely be of use to this operation the admiral thought to himself. However air support wasn’t going to be his only tool in this fight as his mind was already planning the next phase of war.

Operation Falling Eagle
Above Rebel Territory

The UAVs stealthy moved in the sky above hunting for anything of value. While the Thermodolians already had spy satellites in the area drones and human intelligence always helped to fill the gaps.

Each of the two drones where armed with long range sensor pods capable of scanning at long ranges for surveillance and four air to ground hellfire missiles as well as two short range air to air missiles for defense only. As the main mission was surveillance and picking out targets for bombing runs it was deemed to be unlikely that the UAVs would have to use their weapons in a defensive capability.

But alas unlikely and impossible events do happen. Guardian-1, the UAV operating near Samazty, soon came under fire from a rebel with a MANPAD. The drone diverted from its lazy circles in the sky and preformed various emergency maneuvers as to knock the missile from its path. Then a second missile was fired. With two missiles on its tail Guardian-1 rocketed up to an altitude of 15km far above the range of the missiles. After both missiles harmlessly exploded the UAV dove down to 13km and fired two hellfire missiles back at the offending rebels. Both rebel units would be obliterated on contact.

This incident prompted the command to order the operator to send Guardian-1 to the Yaka Oboo region and maintain an altitude of 14km. While some of the surveillance packages wouldn’t be able to pick up fine details on the ground below they would be able to spot general information and outlines while remaining out of the range of any pesky rebels

The order came in from command.

Specter relayed the order over the comms, "Weapons free, weapons free! Be on the lookout for SAMs and cannon fire!" "Yes ma'am." a few pilots said. The F230s dove straight down over Walo, releasing air-to-surface missiles and white phosphorus bombs, their loads running dry in the first volley. Their guns weren't loaded either, as the jets would rely on speed to escape. They quickly made a mad dash back to base, not bothering to look at any damage the explosives may have caused to Walo. The cleanup in Walo would be done by paratroopers.

Nahariim Region Command

General Rogers watched the planes land, and turned back to his meeting with the Chief of Engineering. He still looked young despite being 54 years old.

"I'm pleased that our completed jet has arrived, good work on making haste, Colonel." said the General to Colonel Harrison Keyes. Keyes smiled, and replied, "You are most welcome, I'm sure you'll be pleased with the specifications. The SRX-700 can sustain speeds of Mach 4, and has twin 30mm cannons with each firing from a 1200 round rotary magazine, and has a generous complement of 6 external hardpoints and 4 internal, and can travel 3,000 miles before the fuel runs dry, slightly less than the SR-71 it was based off of, but very much long range for a combat craft. It can do high-altitude strike missions as well, and has incorporated stealth tech." The General smiled, and asked, "Could you show me, perhaps? I would love to examine it before our selected pilot takes it out for the first combat test." Keyes answered, "Yes, and might I ask who the pilot is?" "Specter," said Rogers, "Best pilot we have, and I can only imagine the destruction this would be capable of in her hands."

The two officers walked to the cordoned-off hangar where the SRX-700 was stored, and scanned their IDs. The plane was all black, and had a sleek, geometric shape to it, and having similar looks to the SR-71, and was the result of combining the tech of the salvaged SR-71s and Sukhoi SU-57s that the Mercatusian Air Force possessed. "It is ready for its first combat test, my engineers and mechanics have checked everything, and none of the malfunctions from the early program exist in this complete craft." Rogers walked around the somewhat lengthy plane, and then looked inside the cockpit, "Get this thing armed and ready to go, we'll see how it fairs against surface attacks over Walo." The General walked out of the hangar.

Later

"Ah, Major, it's nice to see you, have a seat." said the Rogers as Specter walked in, still clad in her black flight suit. "You wanted to see me, General?" "Yes indeed I did, Specter, and I think you'll find delight in what I've brought you here for. We received the completed, non-prototype model for what I believe to be the deadliest fighter jet to be created, and we need a pilot to test it. However, not just any pilot, someone with your merits and skill, as the speed and handling may be... too much to handle for some. You'll need to fly back over Walo and test out the weapon systems and combat effectiveness of the SRX-700." Specter replied with her usual cold voice, but perhaps with a hint of astonishment, "You, you want me to fly this Sir? I'm quite honored, and you will not be disappointed." "Dismissed." the General said.

In the Hangar

Specter was suited up to fly the SRX-700, and climbed into the cockpit. The canopy slid forward and closed with the sound of sucking air, and the controls around her lit up. The panel had camera views in all directions, a display of the plane schematic, and even ammo counters. She taxied onto the runway, and readied the plane for takeoff. The engines super disturbing noise was filtered out in the cockpit, and it was almost quiet. "Clear for takeoff, have a good flight Specter." stated flight control over the intercom. Augmented reality displays lit up her helmet, showing the distance to the next target and a plane schematic, rather simple but helpful tools. She lurched backward as the already 2G force pressed her against the seat. The runway was cleared shortly, and she climbed to 6,000 feet before accelerating to full speed, Mach 4.

Soon, she would be at Walo.

Rebel forces had engaged Polish-Lithuanian forces, meanwhile, the KCG offensive had commenced. Karifistan Civil Guard infantry and tank units converged on the small town of Walo. Hazara and Tajik rebels were now engaged with the government forces as the first blood of the civil war was spilled.

The town was hardly a defensible position. It sat within a flat area with hills to the north and south and small, rugged cliffs and rocky overlooks to the east and west. Civil Guard snipers had positioned themselves overlooking the town and had already eliminated two dozen rebel fighters on their own.

Lacking skilled sharpshooters of their own, the rebels barricade themselves within the concrete and limestone buildings, blitzing the advancing KCG forces with RPG’s, heavy machine gun fire, and assault rifle fire. Several KCG armored units had been lost to mines and tank pits, as well as rebel anti-tank weaponry, while the southern dirt road into town was already scattered by dozens of fallen KCG soldiers. Originally wishing to avoid excess collateral damage, the Civil Guard had since discarded this as heavy German model tanks began pummeling the town with tank rounds, blasting apart unmarked civilian structures and barricaded buildings alike.

Responding to the requests of the Thermodalia for coordinates of attack, General Zamad Al-Fajuuk with Emir Alizai’s permission provided coordinates to Thermodalia. Wak Sindh and the verified western forward rebel outpost were to be hammered by heavy aerial strikes. The General in fact making an adamant point that Wak Sindh was to flattened, as well as Yaka Oboo.

Operation Falling Eagle
TNS Wilson Day

There was a flurry of activity on the deck of the aircraft carrier as crews readied the A-20 Ghost naval stealth bombers for their upcoming mission over Wak Sindh. The Emir has ordered three targets to be bombed with Wak Sindh and Yaka Oboo to be leveled, something that Admiral Dênæ was all too happy to comply with.

The attacks where to bf carried out in three phases the bombing of Yaka Oboo was to take place first utilizing bombers from the Thermodolian air base in Socotra, then the missile strike on the western rebel FOB, and finally Wak Sindh would be turned into ash.

The destroyers and cruisers surrounding the aircraft carrier where to take part in this strike as they where to launch the missiles that would make up the bulk of the attacks on the western rebel FOB and on Wak Sindh. Today was going to be a day that many rebels wished that they had never been born.

When the time was right the first two naval bombers took off both fully loaded and both the first wave of the hell that was to be brought to Wak Sindh.

Operation Falling Eagle
Yaka Oboo

The UAV had been lazily circling in the sky above, taking few breaks to refuel. Yaka Oboo was far inland and not much was known about the region yet the Emir wanted it to be hit. The first targets had been selected by Guardian-1, with the first strike of phase one being the market of the town. One lone cruise missile was on its way to the market followed closely by two B-11 Condors from their base in Socotra.

The cruise missile hit the market with a deafening roar shattering the peaceful calm of the day. What would soon follow would shatter any idea of a short and bloodless war. Just a few minutes after the missile struck the town the two B-11 condors unleashed 20,000 kg of guided and anti-personal munitions on the town below.

Hell had come to earth.

Operation Falling Eagle
Rebel FOB near Samazty

The air was calm, too calm perhaps. The Samazty region hadn’t seen to much action in way of air strikes. The Thermodolians tried spying on the area with drones but the heavy rebel activity forced them northward.

However all of this peace was to change. On the order of the Emir Thermodolia was about to begin phase two of the days air strikes. However unlike the other two strikes this one was to be conducted entirely by missiles.

As the hot afternoon sun beat down on the ground six ship launched cruise missiles similar to the US tomahawks raced through the sky to their targets. The first missile that met its target caught everyone in the area unawares. Unfortunately there was no time to take cover as the next three missiles all slammed into their targets. By the time the final two missiles had hit their mark death and devastation filled the land.

Operation Falling Eagle
Wak Sindh

The third phase of the day’s bombing campaign had begun. Two A-20 Ghosts appeared over the horizon their stealth and low radar cross section keeping them undetected. Not that the rebels where capable of taking out these craft.

When they came over the town they both opened their bay doors leaving them vulnerable to detection and possible attack. However they wouldn’t be staying in one place long as they let lose 9,000 kg of deadly cargo on the people below. As the 9,000 kg of unguided, guided, and other types of munitions spread terror across the town the two bombers headed back to the carrier to refuel and reload.

They where just the beginning. As soon as the bombers left four cruise missiles slammed into the town, turning rubble into dust. This was to be the first of six waves that day and the people of Wak Sindh still had five more to go. For the next several hours the town was relentlessly bombarded by bombs and missiles. The last wave was just rearranging the rubble. By the end Wak Sindh was nothing more than a smoke husk of its former self.

The SRX-700 was now over Walo when new orders were received. "Redirect your course to Yaka Oboo, Specter, a bombing run on the town will give more accurate results. Over and out." Maintaining radio silence as ordered on her part, Specter changed directions, and when travelling at Mach 4, she would be there in minutes.

Later, Over Yaka Oboo

She had to release the air-to-surface missiles before she was directly over the town, and a skilled pilot like her even had trouble calculating when to fire. The on-board computer displayed a distance counter, which would tell Specter where and when to fire. As the plane got ever closer, the distance counter beeped more rapidly. The computer made one long beep, and Specter released six supersonic air-to-surface missiles, which wouldn't just do explosive damage, but the shockwave would also cause more structural damage. Crack! Crack! Crack! Crack! Crack! Crack! The sound of the missiles breaking the sound barrier would be deafening to those on the surface. The SRX-700 circled the town and Specter watched as the missiles struck. Buildings were pulverized within the immediate area of the shockwaves, and smoke billowed from the six impacts scattered across the town. She still had six more air-to-surface missiles, and she climbed to a higher altitude in order to dive bomb. The SRX could barely be tracked because of the monumental speed, and more supersonic missiles were released in volleys of two, and Specter took care to hit the outer areas of town too. She pulled up just in time before she would have slammed into the ground, and the sheer speed combined with low altitude created a mini-sandstorm. Yaka Oboo was devastated by the supersonic missiles, and then a cruise missile slammed into the town. Obviously someone else was after the same target. What looked to be Thermodilian aircraft dropped many bombs, further pounding the town into the ground. The SRX would be spotted speeding towards the bombers to examine them, but the plane kept a passive distance. Specter was tempted to radio them, but she couldn't, as she must maintain radio silence. She wondered how baffled the crew of the planes must be that a nearly hypersonic aircraft had joined the fight.

GUVD Spetsnaz camp, near ruins of Yaka Oboo

The explosions could be felt from kilometres away. The Svadyetskan forces were sparked into action when the blast wave from the first attack reached their camp, ruffling the camouflage netting that was strewn over everything man-made. Nikolai barked orders as Spetsnaz soldiers ran about, quickly packing sandbags against vehicles to provide limited protection from a bomb blast or taking up strategic positions with MANPADs in case their own position was attacked. The ground shook repeatedly as missile after missile hit the village of Yaka Oboo, tremors reaching out to disturb the dust in the Spetsnaz camp.

Then, as quickly as it had begun, it ceased. A deathly quiet fell upon the region.

* * * *

Nikolai and Qadr stood looking at what was left of Yaka Oboo. The village had been flattened, not a soul moved in the charred remains of what had once been a vibrant centre of life. Qadr wept openly, despairing for those who were his people, if only by blood. Nikolai stared grimly at the barren ruins, remembering the people who he had met and spoken with just that morning. The two of them had crawled, inch by agonising inch, from the camp, dressed in camouflage gear in order to see the devastation. Cursing softly, Nikolai pulled out the satellite phone.

'We need fucking AA.' Nikolai didn't waste any time, snarling his words down the line the instant the call had connected. As always, one eye was fixed on his watch. 'In case you haven't heard, the Emirate has allies and they just wasted the entirety of the village that we've been camped by. We need AA weapons NOW, or else the next time you hear from us is when some hostile nation drags our charred corpses in body bags into a negotiation and demands to know what we were doing there.'

'Calm down,' the voice on the other end advised. 'We have weapons inbound. An operative was able to buy antiaircraft guns from an arms bazaar in Afghanistan. We can have them to you within a day. Tomorrow, tops.'

Nikolai cut him off. 'Guns won't do any damn thing. We need missiles. Something that can shoot down a plane before it can get out of reach. If the damn things can't be gotten in-country without raising questions, give the order and we pull out.' He paused for breath. 'Look, we won't have a chance if we're caught with our pants down. They razed a village. That's stone and brick structures and what have we got? Tents. We'll be cut to pieces.'

'We will look into the situation.' The line went dead. Nikolai hurled the satellite phone to the ground in frustration before picking it up to make sure he hadn't broken it. Qadr looked at him, tears still in his eyes.

'We will kill him.' The other man spoke, voice steady, even as his body trembled, either from rage or grief. Nikolai couldn't tell which. 'The cowardly Emir will burn in hell for this. He will burn for the crimes he has committed against the people of Karifistan, and for the crimes of those who came before him.' Nikolai laid a hand on his arm.

'It will be alright. We will survive.' Nikolai spoke calmly, trying to soothe the raging anger that coursed through his friend's body. 'We will get weapons into the hands of the downtrodden and the people will rise up to be freed. And we will help them do this.'

'The Emir must die.' Qadr's eyes were dark, filled with rage and promising doom for anyone who crossed him. 'Cut the head from the snake and cast down the foul serpent before it strikes again.'

Nikolai looked at his friend, turning over the possibilities. If the Emir were to perish, what would happen then?

Situation Room B, Ministry of Defence, Duovograd, United Soviet States of Svadyetsk

The room was filled with grim people with grim expressions and even grimmer reports. General Yuri Mikhailov, the Minister of Defence, glared over the top of his steel-framed spectacles at Lieutenant General Valeri Korov, the head of the GUVD's Internal Security Division which was responsible for overseeing the operations of the Directorate's special forces units. Mikhailov took off his glasses and cleared his throat.

'I think it is clear that the situation is getting out of hand. The GUVD has failed to carry out any concrete action to save our comrades in spirit from the Emir in Karifistan and, if your report is anything to go by, we will probably end up scraping a crack unit of Spetsnaz commandos off of the surface of Karifistan.' The General waved a hand at the report, as well as at the requisition request for several mobile SAM units that Korov had given him at the start of the meeting. 'We can't give your team the equipment you asked for. To do so would be to admit that we are supplying the rebels and supporting their cause. Only our armed forces are capable of fielding these launcher units, especially as we don't export them.'

'I have spoken with my man on the ground. He says that the village of Yaka Oboo has been destroyed and preliminary analysis of intelligence reports and comms intercepts suggests that other sites have suffered a similar fate.' Korov spoke bluntly, his face expressionless as he laid out the facts. 'The fact of the matter is that we can do nothing against an enemy with superior firepower and air support with what we have currently. We need those missiles to protect our own and to effectively support the rebels.'

'If you're that determined for us to stay involved in the country, maybe we should just launch a full-blown military offensive,' Mikhailov remarked sarcastically.
