New flag rules

Because it's 2020 and we live in a fast-paced modern world with high-resolution devices, I have bumped up the maximum image sizes for custom flags. New rules:

Automatic Flag Resizing

Your flag will usually be resized to fit within 428x284 pixels. Both height and width must fit, so if, for example, your flag is perfectly square, it will be resized to 284x284. This process also converts animated GIFs into static images.

Exceptions: You can have a bigger flag than usual if its filesize is small enough: If it's under 150kB and the image fits within either 535x355 pixels or 321x568 pixels, it won't be resized.

Animated GIFs are possible if the filesize is under 150kB and the image fits within 321x213 pixels. So you can have a small animated GIF so long as the filesize isn't too big. In this case, the animation will only run on your nation's home page.

Custom flags are all flags which are uploaded by players. This thus excludes all flags which are already present in the game itself.

For the last bit, do you mean that the same resolution and file size constraints are present for the forum-side for GIF flags? So... If the GIF flag is too large for the forums, it will only run game-side?

I’m overall happy with these changes. However, I’ve noticed that nation flags now cover up a large chunk of the nation’s banner space. Is there anything that could be done to offset that? Perhaps moving the flag down a bit depending on size?

Hi Violet,

thanks again for this update, it's pretty great and has been a lot of fun to toy around with. My regionmates and I are a bit confused though about exactly what the new requirements are for *regional* flags since it seems to be a bit different from national ones. When uploading a flag to a region it says the limit is 150x100 pixels, but we've found it seems to be 450xsomething else. Is that accurate? Are there any exceptions for regional flags like there are for national flags?

I'm having the opposite problem: because my flag is vertical, it pushes my motto and everything else down the page on my screen and creates a big blank space. Is there a way to make that exclusion zone smaller?

I unwittingly uploaded the crazy over-sized one, actually, but it was fun. It looks like it's been replaced with a smaller one now. This brings up my question again: the text when uploading a regional flag still says the limit is 150x100 pixels, but it appears to be something more like 450 by something. What is the exact limit (both for dimension and filesize) and are there exceptions like there are for national flags?

I think we should make use of the "max-width" and "max-height" CSS property in the nation’s description page. Flags that go over the dimension limits can be resized losslessly.

Seems kind of pointless to let us upload larger dimension flags so we can have bigger flags and then change it after a few days so you can still upload the bigger flags, but the site won't display them full size.

Might as well just revert to the old size limits then.

They still show up larger for me..

No, it definitely are showing smaller again, at least on my display.

But if I right-click and select 'open image in new tab' to view the original file of my flag, I get this:
