Alright, so I'm thinking of making someone whose powers are essentially throwing baseballs at enhanced speed. Sounds weird, but here's what it is: My character can conjure two temari balls, and by winding up and throwing them like a baseball, they act like Captain America's shield. It would have telekinesis and super strength. Speed probably as well. I hope I explained that decently.

Another idea is one with puppetry revolving more around imitation. He can form needles and sewing threads, which he can then "sew" to make them look and act like a real item. Just mimicry

Character Description
    Name: Conner Vale
    Gender: Male
    Age: 16
    Appearance: Conner

Strengths and Weaknesses
Skills: History Expert, Good Runner, Good card thrower and amateur writer.
Weaknesses: Math, Can be stubborn and indecisive at times.
Phase One Power: Aura Sight - Conner is able to pear into another plane and able to see people's auras. Along with being able to see through walls. His sight is very limited with only seeing the colors of an aura. Also, his eyes started to glow a bright blue when using it so he tries to use it when no one is around.

Phase Two Powers: Aura Vision - Now Conner is able to identify people based on their auras and able can read their surface emotions. Along with being able to track down auras that he has seen like a bloodhound. The trail has to be three hours old and he can lose sight of it with too many other auras trails are close to each other. (Level 2)
Aura Manipulation - Conner is able to manipulate his aura to launch a burst of aura energy. A blast is on par with getting hit by a paintball, it will tire him out if he uses it too much in a fight. (Level 1)

Phase Three Powers: Aura Vision Expert - Conner is now able to see any anomalies in a person's auras such as mind control and other effects. Along with having a greater range on aura tracking. Being able to track an aura trail that is a day old and it's easier for him to keep track of it. (Level 3)
Aura Blast - (Level 2) - Conner is able to summon stronger aura energy attacks and can fire in a continuous beam. This tires him out more and his attacks have the strength to deal significant damage to a foe. As deadly and dangerous as getting hit with a modern broadhead hunting arrow. The beam has a range of ten feet.
Aura Shield- Conner is able to manipulate his aura to summon a circular shield around him. It covers about five feet around him and be able to withstand several hits before breaking. This uses his aura energy for as long it is up thus he uses it sparely. (Level 1)

Background:
Personality: Shy, calm, and tends to go with the flow. Conner is an introvert that likes to keep secrets about himself no matter how trivial. He tends to open up more to friends and can hold a conversation if he needs to and get excited when a topic he knows if brought up.
Backstory: The first thing you should know about Conner is that he is not from Prefeton. Having being born in Fort Wayne, Indiana and being the eldest of three. Conner had a normal life in Indiana and planned to be a writer like his father who was a notable writer. He would sometimes visit Prefeton since his father's parents live there and when Conner's grandfather died. His father wanted to Prefeton to be closer to his mother. They moved two years ago and while Connor understands why his father wanted to move. He still missed his friends and had a hard time making more in Prefeton. Conner would often spend time alone or with his siblings while on the island and liked to jog around the neighborhood. During one night while he was trying to sleep, he felt pressure building around his eyes. Getting up out of bed and started to see flashes of light, before Conner could realize what is happening. His vision changed and he started to see differently. Conner's room appeared transparent and he could see big blobs of color through the walls. He realized that the blobs of color were his family but, would later after testing his sight that he was looking at their souls or auras, he does not know which. Not sure of what to make with this new ability or figure out how he got it, Conner so far is trying to act as if everything is normal and use his power rarely.

Bit of a power change from the original concept but here we go. Lemme know if I have to restructure stuff

Character Description
    Name: Bridget Reeves
    Gender: Female
    Age: 17
    Appearance:
    Image

Strengths and Weaknesses
Skills: Though this serves as a double-edged sword, she is more or less all talent, little drive. She has the academic know-how to easily coast her way through school with decent grades, but shows little passion for it.
Weaknesses: While not exactly out of shape, her overall lifestyle is far from a healthy one. She's fond of drinking, and almost half her free time is spent with a cigarette in her hand.
    Phase One Power:
    - Rejuvenation (Level 1): Bridget's body, inside and out, heals at an alarming rate. Everything from scrapes and bruises to broken bones and damaged organs regenerates at almost three times that of an average human. Her immune system shares this effect, causing minor colds to pass in roughly a day.
    Phase Two Powers:
    - Rejuvenation (Level 2): The speed of Bridget's healing factor increases further. In addition, any organic matter or living thing coming into contact with her bare skin begins to share its effects so long as contact is maintained. This ability is ineffective against lost limbs, poisons, cancers, birth defects, brain damage, or the effects of aging. Her immune system is capable of purging even dangerous sicknesses and diseases.
    - Iron Stomach, Iron Lungs (Level 1): Bridget is capable of consuming food or breathing substances that would otherwise cause considerable harm. Eating rotten food or breathing smoke has little effect on her.
    Phase Three Powers:
    - Rejuvenation (Level 3): Bridget's own injuries and of those in her care heal with even greater speed and, given enough time, are capable of even regenerating limbs or curing diseases. It is still ineffective against cancers, birth defects, brain damage and aging.
    - Iron Stomach, Iron Lungs (Level 3): Bridget is nigh-immune to most ingested poisons or carcinogens. This cannot be shared via her healing factor, and is ineffective against neurotoxins.

Background:
Personality: Apathetic by nature, Bridget's view on life and fate is nihilistic at best. She is quite introverted, and cares little for initiating conversation or going out unless she absolutely needs to. Though she rarely goes out of her way to express or display hatred, her abrasiveness has a habit of rubbing people the wrong way.
Backstory:
Bridget is the only child of a poor working class family, and considers herself destined to stay that way for a long time. Just as she had found herself gaining friends in her birth home of NYC, she had the wonderful experience of being whisked away by her parents' job opportunities, hoping they would make more money to get by. But, surprising absolutely no one, they didn't.

Now, she lives on the island of Prefeton, knowing absolutely no one and being practically forced to get another job to help keep her and her family's life afloat. It isn't exactly anything new, however. Her parents were abhorrent when it came to the needs and desires of their child. In fact, Bridget was more or less sustaining herself in every way, save for the whole "living with your parents" part. Most everything she owned was bought with her own money - things to take with her when her parents inevitably kick her out of the house in about a year or so.

Despite this nasty relationship with her parents, however, Bridget leads a quiet life. When not at school or work, she typically spends her free time at home on the internet and keeping to herself. And honestly, this was exactly the way she liked it.

But with the start of senior year getting closer by the day, Bridget started noticing something strange happening with her body.

Accepted, looks good to me though feel free to assume she knows some people in the town. Whichever you prefer, but thought that might be easier

I further edited my app by the way. I thought five minutes lightning form was a little strange, so I changed it to be just seconds at a time through the air, and the travel time when he goes through electrical lines. Thought that would make a better drawback.

Hmm... not sure if this needs tweaking or maybe going for another power instead (not sure if OP or I've made it overly complicated), but this was what I had for reanimation/necromancy:

Phase One Power: Reanimation (level 1): Via touch, he inject a corpse with deathly/necromantic energy, and raise the dead (obviously this requires him to find a corpse in the first place). Said corpses operate on instinct, moving and reacting accordingly, and once raised, have a ingrained urge to obey the summoner, though they are not bound by this, and may cause problems for him. He can only directly control at most around 8 (any others beyond this are essentially uncontrolled undead). When directly controlling them, he shares their senses. The more summoned, the heavier a toll it takes on him. Whilst the undead feel no pain, he is affected if they are destroyed (especially the ones being directly controlled). He will feel pain and get a mental and sensory backlash from their destruction.

For them to continue to be active beyond a day and to avoid/resist decaying, they need sustenance (that is to say, lifeforce, or the flesh and blood of living creatures) otherwise they will return to being normal corpses. If necessary, he can share some of his own lifeforce with them, though this will take its toll on him. There are various methods that can be used to dispose of these corpses, but fire and dismemberment are among the most effective. When directly controlling undead, a yellow-green glow is emitted from his eyes and (if applicable) the eyes of the creatures being controlled. If he is controlling small creatures, such as mice, rats or insects, then he can directly control a larger amount equivalent to a swarm. That is assuming he would want to, since their natural instincts as undead are a bit different from normal. Insects, for instance, would, when not directly controlled, treat him as something akin to a mix between a queen and a hive itself. Rei himself doesn't exactly like insects, and would rather not have a horde of undead insects trying to infest him.

Phase Two Powers: Enhanced Reanimation (level 2): He can summon more undead, and is able to directly control more of them. They also possess more intelligence, and are stronger than before, lasting for a longer period of time (4 days) without sustenance. He can directly control around 32 at this point.

    Deathly Touch (level 1):
He can channel deathly energy via touch into enemies, gradually poisoning them, and in turn absorbing life-force from them. At this level, it has limited efficiency/potency, allowing him to increase his own vitality/heal wounds to a certain extent. A broken bone would take a week for him to recover via the energy obtained from this power. As for its effect on others (from taking their lifeforce and tainting them with deathly energy), it would take hours of absorption to begin to have any noticeable effect beyond them feeling a bit dizzy/lethargic/ill, and in combat would not have much practicality beyond perhaps lowering someone's guard or reaction speed at a critical moment. For a few days after they might feel a bit ill and weak, but the paltry amount of residual deathly energy in their body would naturally be filtered out/recovered fairly quickly, If someone was very close to death already it could finish them off, but that's about it. Like with the reanimation power, a yellow-green glow comes from his eyes when utilising this power.

Phase Three Powers: Necromancy (level 3): He can raise a greater number of undead, who last for a longer period of time (32 days). He can directly control up to around 249 undead, and they will be enhanced/mutated forms of their former selves, with deathly energy enhancing their flesh and bones, making them more resistant to damage (though fire is still a weakness). He can also borrow deathly energy from them, sacrificing them in return for increased vitality/regeneration from injuries (he can do this consciously, though if he severely injured this will activate automatically). They can also be sacrificed as undead bombs, creating a cloud of poisonous deathly energy and bone-fragments. Via touch, he can also potentially mould/reshape the corpses he commands into various forms, including weapons/armour. So he can potentially clad himself in conscious/animate clothing/armour (though it will probably be limited in what it can do). This includes stuff like making deathly-energy enhanced bone-armour for himself, or something a bit more low-key that resembles normal clothing, but offers better protection. Given a bit of time, he could fashion an amalgamated form of undead golem, that could potentially be hollowed out enough for him to use as a sort of undead equivalent of a mecha. Since controlling undead means sharing their senses, having that many can make it difficult to coordinate them and avoid sensory overload, especially if multiple undead are destroyed in quick succession.

Death Transference (level 3): Upgrading from Deathly Touch, he can extend it to a range of 20 metres. Anyone (or living thing) within that range will gradually be poisoned by deathly energy and have their life-force absorbed by him. Depending on the severity of the injuries, the energy takes time to help him recover. This recovery stems from the core of his nervous system and heart, working outwards from there. Within hours, broken bones can be healed, and within several days, limbs can be regenerated. The process can potentially be sped up if there is enough life-force, but this may lead to negative side effects. Obviously he still feels pain, so he would want to avoid injuries if possible. Repeated injuries, acid, electrocution, drugs, objects blocking the healing process, misaligned body parts, etc can interfere with healing process.

The recovery of injuries is one element of this power, but perhaps the most potent is the power it leaves him to survive otherwise fatal injuries. Unless his body is completely obliterated, he may eventually recover. The most serious injuries cause him to enter a death-like state. As soon as key/core elements of his nervous system regenerate - which is what his body will try to repair first, he'll regain awareness, at least to some extent. Though he may not have healed enough to do much more than that. Assuming all of his undead are gone and cannot be used to recover any injuries, this "emergency recovery" mode first feeds upon any potential energy in his body (leaving him essentially emaciated and too weak to move) before moving on to anything he's touching, and then anything within a 20 metre radius. If there's no energy to use and he's too injured to do anything, he'll be stuck in a dormant state until the situation changes. Said dormant state resembles a corpse, and bears no signs of life. When entering the state of "death" he will take at least a week to revive (can be increased if needed), potentially longer if depending on how drastically damaged his body is. During this time, an enemy would essentially have free rein to prepare to make things difficult for him when he reawakens.

If his nervous system/brain is targeted and damaged, then this healing would be severely impeded/disrupted, and as he regenerates he may suffer from some side effects, such as amnesia, damaged senses, body coordination/motor skill problems, temporary paralysis, headaches, issues with mental state, impaired cognitive abilities, loss of consciousness at points, etc. He'll probably eventually recover, but these side effects will undoubtedly be a problem for him for at least a bit. After healing, may be rather tired/hungry/dehydrated.

Here's my app. I went with a new character.

Character Description
    Name: Kristen Lane
    Gender: Female
    Age: 16
    Appearance:
    Image

Strengths and Weaknesses
Skills: Kristen is a starter for the high school track team. She's ok at some of the sprinting events, but has been part of the district-winning 4x400 m relay. Kristen also has participated in long jump and discus. Academically, she prefers history and reading to math and science. She has her driver's license. So far hasn't wrecked her car.
Weaknesses: Is bad at singing and hates having to take choir class.

    Phase One Power:
Jets activated - Level 1 - Kristen has an increased speed, up to 17 mph which is definitely faster than her official personal best on the track team. But her new speed comes with an unfortunate side effect that would disqualify her from most track meets. Her power manifests itself with six noticeable exhaust pipes on the back of each calf, that do give off carbon dioxide when she uses it. The exhaust pipes are linked to an internal jet propulsion system that her power develops within her. It's a blessing and a curse. She would be faster than she ever could be in meets. She just can't show anyone about it. And honestly, it's kind of freaking her out.

    Phase Two Powers:
Jets booster - Level 2 - Kristen's speed has increased, which means now she can run at 42 mph. The exhaust pipes on the backs of her calves have also been matched by a set of 4 exhaust pipes on the backs of each of her arms

Jet power - Level 1 - Kristen's power has now developed into another unusual aspect. She now has detachable arms. These arms can fire off as rockets from her forearms. Her arms fire up to 10.5 yds. away at a speed of 10 meters per second (half the speed of a bottle rocket firework). After hitting their target, her forearms attempt to come back and propel themselves by homing signal until they reattach. Kristen would not be able to launch her hands at a distance and do technical work with her fingers, like attempting to fix something or apply first aid. But she will be able to hit targets and cause blunt force damage. She also will need to get protective gear so her hands don't get mangled.

    Phase Three Powers:
Maximum Jets - Level 3 - Now Kristen can run at 170 mph. She requires extra protein to do so if she wants to run for longer than an hour.

Jet Launch - Level 2 - Now Kristen's rocket arms that detach, can shoot up to 30 yds. away, at a speed of 31.5 meters per second (1 1/2 x the speed of a bottle rocket firework).

Jet Flight - Level 1 - Kristen at this phase can fly, but only 30 mph and only in short bursts. She can't fly for more than 5 minutes at a time. She also can't fly for more than 5 city blocks at a time. She can't fly higher than half a mile tops. Kristen's flight is caused by her internal jet engine, now directed towards propelling her to the sky. However, she is capable of VTOL (vertical take off and lift), flying straight up without needing a runway in front of her.

Background:
Personality: Kristen is generally confident in herself. She is pretty well-balanced, but sometimes snarky. She's more of an extrovert, but only around people that might be in her "group". Towards others, and especially those she doesn't know well, she's more reserved, taking time to learn what people are like. Conscientious but a little selfish, Kristen lives more in the moment. A little unfocused, but that's due to her age and she is like other teens in this regard.
Backstory: Kristen is a townie. Her parents are supportive of her. They divorced four years ago, and it's taken awhile for Kristen to recover and adjust. She lives with her mom most times, and one weekend once a month and most holidays with her dad. Her dad works in construction as a contractor. Her mom worked as a tax consultant.

Kristen realized she had the new physiology with engine exhaust pipes sticking out the backs of her calves the morning the IC starts. It's been a freaky day for her. That said, she needed to get out of her mom's house and while she wasn't exactly thinking she would have fun at the party that she'd been invited to, she went. More so because she thought she might find a close friend she could confide in.

So far, she hasn't run with her internal engine going...
Since I''ve also been working on a possible alternative power set, here's my other idea (one centred around radiation):

Phase One Power: Invisibility: (level one): He can turn invisible. His molecules have photo-sensitive properties that enable them react to electromagnetic radiation in the wavelength of visible light in such a way that they render the entirety of Rei's body imperceptible to the naked eye. He needs to concentrate to become invisible or restore his visibility. Objects and clothes do not become invisible with him, though if he places small objects in his mouth/body/swallows them, they will also become invisible. He is also unable to make others invisible. Others may be able to see him leave footprints. Ultraviolet and infrared cameras will still show him. Rain and other liquids, solids, fire, etc. may show the user's shape while invisible. Whilst invisible, others can still potentially hear, smell or touch him. Stress/pain/distractions can mess with his concentration, making it more difficult to properly use this power.

Phase Two Powers: Phase-Jumping Radioactive Teleportation (phase 1): Utilising phase-jumping radiation, Rei can teleport himself within anywhere in his line of sight. Phase-jumping radiation works via disassembling matter or energy into their component particles, and reassembling them upon arrival after transport. He is limited to only teleporting himself (though if he places small objects in his mouth/body/swallows them, they will also teleport). He needs to concentrate to teleport, and teleporting into a place already occupied by another physical object or person would lead to telefragging (it's pretty much up to chance whether it's him or the thing being teleported that's going to have a bad time). It probably won't kill him, but he'd still probably be stuck and not exactly feeling very well. Before teleporting, there will be a brief wind-up period, and his eyes will emit a yellow-green glow, giving an early sign. Repeated use of teleportation in quick succession may lead to dizziness, headaches, nausea and lack of energy. Continued usage beyond that would potentially lead to temporarily impaired cognition, motor-control skills, temporary paralysis, unconsciousness, bleeding from extremities or other unpleasantness. If he can't see anything, he can't teleport. Teleportation requires sight and certain calculations to be effectively utilised, and it is necessary to concentrate in the process of working out the spatial co-ordinates of jumping between 3-dimensional and 11-dimensional space. Stress, pain and anxiety can thus render teleportation to fail/be unusable. There is also a one second lag when consecutively using his power in fights, leaving him vulnerable in that one second interval before teleporting again.

Flashing Gaze (phase 1): He can emit a blinding light from his eyes, a radioluminescent yellow-green glow that can temporarily blind onlookers, and dazzle those looking at reflections of him. Continued usage of it is fairly inefficient and has a major strain on his eyes. Best used as a brief flash. Forced continuous usage may lead to bleeding from eyes and temporary blindness (for himself). Usage of the power also involves emitting a small amount of radiation, though not enough to be harmful, along with some slight electromagnetic interference and a mild increase in surrounding temperature.

Phase Three Powers: Radiation Emission (phase 3): Essentially an evolution of flashing gaze. Within a radius of 1 inch he can emit alpha radiation, within 10 metres he can emit beta radiation, and within around 30 metres, he can emit gamma radiation from his whole body, at a dosage lethal enough to be fatal to others. At first others would suffer extreme disorientation, vomiting and nausea, before going on to receive fatal radiation poisoning. Continuous usage can take its toll on him, and he is not completely immune to the effects of this radiation, though his regenerative ability would ensure he can recover after a bit. It can be used indirectly against someone by irradiating an object, item of food or drink that would later come into their possession/contact. Gamma radiation can be blocked by lead, iron/steel and concrete, and beta radiation can be blocked by aluminium as well, while alpha radiation is blocked by an inch of air or as little as a thin layer of paper. Alpha and beta radiation have long term effects on the human body and will stay for years, whilst gamma radiation, lacking a particle that will stay within a human body, can only do damage in the immediate. As before, his eyes glow with a radioluminescent yellow-green light. When using this power, his body temperature seems unnaturally high to the point of being scalding to the touch, and those around him can feel an uncomfortable increase in temperature. Sustained usage would lead to exhaustion, bleeding from orifices, potential unconsciousness and symptoms of radiation sickness. As with the preceding version of this power, it is most efficient if used in a brief flash/high intensity burst. Within the radius of effect the gamma radiation would have a negative effect on most electrical equipment (though simple stuff, like motors, switches, incandescent lights, wiring, and solenoids, would be unaffected even after a very large radiation exposure), and radiation-resistant materials or shielding can be utilised. Most semiconductor electronic components are susceptible to radiation damage, and are likely to be fried by it. He can essentially turn himself into a human nuclear reactor, though as mentioned before, prolonged usage isn't without its side effects. The longer he uses it the brighter the glow, the hotter his temperature, and the higher the radiation emitted. If maintained for a certain period, the heat may reach temperatures enough to burn materials in direct physical contact.

Electromagnetic Regeneration (phase 1): He can convert electromagnetic radiation into energy that allows him to increase his own vitality/heal wounds to a certain extent. A broken bone would normally take a week for him to recover via the energy obtained from this power. It is passive, and is influenced by how radiation he is exposed to, and what types. Though unpleasant, he can use this energy instead of consuming food and drink, though his body would weaken, and he would feel thirst and hunger. It also allows him to substitute a need for oxygen by relying on radiation to live (though the process is very unpleasant, to say the least, and he would be unable to move his body until he could breathe once more). This recovery stems from the core of his nervous system and heart, working outwards from there. The power of the regeneration can be increased in a synergistic effect when utilised alongside radiation emission, though due to the side effects, it becomes something that is slow in the short-term (though it would take time to recover from serious injuries and requires further recovery from some negative side effects) but will increase his survivability in the long-run. In normal circumstances the healing speed is equal to the average phase 1 healing power. Obviously he still feels pain, so he would want to avoid injuries if possible. Repeated injuries, acid, electrocution, drugs, objects blocking the healing process, misaligned body parts, etc can interfere with healing process. He can potentially speed up healing, at the cost of forcefully absorbing more electromagnetic radiation, leading to some negative side effects. This form of healing allows recovery from radiation damage to his cells, DNA, and molecular structure, restoring them to optimal condition. This includes maintaining the length of telomeres, preventing them from shortening during cell division.

He is accepted.

Talchyon wrote:Here's my app. I went with a new character. WIP. (OP, comments on the powers and power level aspects are welcomed).

Character Description
    Name: Kristen Lane
    Gender: Female
    Age: 16
    Appearance:

Strengths and Weaknesses
Skills: Kristen is a starter for the high school track team. She's ok at some of the sprinting events, but has been part of the district-winning 4x400 m relay. Kristen also has participated in long jump and discus. Academically, she prefers history and reading to math and science. She has her driver's license. So far hasn't wrecked her car.
Weaknesses: Is bad at singing and hates having to take choir class.

    Phase One Power:
Jets activated - Level 1 - Kristen has an increased speed, up to 16 mph which is definitely faster than her official personal best on the track team.

Jets engaged - Level 2 - Kristen's speed has increased, which means now she can run at 40 mph.

Her arms fire up to 10 yds. away at a speed of 10 meters per second (half the speed of a bottle rocket firework).

Maximum Jets - Level 3 - Now Kristen can run at 160 mph. She requires extra protein to do so if she wants to run for longer than an hour.

Jet Launch - Level 2 - Now Kristen's rocket arms that detach, can shoot up to 30 yds. away, at a speed of 30 meters per second (1 1/2 x the speed of a bottle rocket firework).

Jet Flight - Level 1 - Kristen at this phase can fly, but only 16 mph and only in short bursts.

Background:
Personality:
Backstory:(How did you come to be here?)
Kristen is accepted as well. Feel free to tweak all the speeds up by 5%. I think that's fair given the social negatives of having bits of machinery sticking out of you.

Nea Videssos wrote:Since I''ve also been working on a possible alternative power set, here's my other idea (one centred around radiation):

Phase Two Powers: Electromagnetic Regeneration (phase 1): He can convert electromagnetic radiation into energy that allows him to increase his own vitality/heal wounds to a certain extent. A broken bone would take a week for him to recover via the energy obtained from this power. It is passive, and is influenced by how radiation he is exposed to, and what types. Usage of the power also involves emitting a small amount of radiation, though not enough to be harmful, along with some slight electromagnetic interference and a mild increase in surrounding temperature.

Phase-Jumping Radioactive Teleportation (phase 1): Utilising phase-jumping radiation, Rei can teleport himself within anywhere in his line of sight.

The longer he uses it the brighter the glow, the hotter his temperature, and the higher the radiation emitted. If maintained for a certain period, the heat may reach temperatures enough to burn materials in direct physical contact.

Enhanced Electromagnetic Regeneration (phase 2):
An improved regenerative ability allows him to absorb electromagnetic radiation to heal more effectively and efficiently than before. Depending on the severity of the injuries, the energy takes time to help him recover. Like before, he can rely on this energy instead of eating and drinking, and this enhanced version also allows him to substitute a need for oxygen by relying on radiation to live (though the process is very unpleasant, to say the least, and he would be unable to move his body until he could breathe once more). This recovery stems from the core of his nervous system and heart, working outwards from there. Within a day, broken bones can be healed, and within a week, limbs can be regenerated. With this form of electromagnetic energy absorption, he is likely to recover from things that would kill a normal person, given enough time (though if it's bad enough, he's likely to be incapacitated for the majority of that time). This can be said to be a power that offers good survivability, but would take time to recover from serious injuries. This form of healing allows recovery from radiation damage to his cells, DNA, and molecular structure, restoring them to optimal condition. This includes maintaining the length of telomeres, preventing them from shortening during cell division.

Looks grand, though you have one too many skills at lvl 2. Only thing I'd ask if why bother with the beta rays? They're easier to counter and shorter range than the gamma rays. Practically I don't imagine them being all that helpful. I feel that a lot of area of effect stuff can be overpowered... but since this would kill your friends as well that seems fine!

Nea Videssos wrote:Hmm... not sure if this needs tweaking or maybe going for another power instead (not sure if OP or I've made it overly complicated), but this was what I had for reanimation/necromancy:

Due to the difficulty in finding corpses to summon (guessing you'll always need a dead person) that looks generally okay though I'd ask you, if you want to run with it, to downscale some aspects of the necromancy. To me, it reads like it would make you significantly more powerful than a strength/speed based hero... particularly with the swarms of insects/rodents.

I guess I misread it when I looked at your comment that mentioned 3 level 1 powers at phase 2 (since that was actually including 1 power from phase 1). Juggling these things around involves maths, and that's not exactly forte. :p

Hmm... wondering how to tweak that now...

Character Description
    Name: Harper Holiday
    Gender: Male
    Age: 14
Appearance: Cute, friendly-looking guy with wavy blonde hair. He believes himself to be of average height, though he's exactly 5' and is slim in build, though a little toned thanks to the activities he partakes in. His wardrobe consists mostly of light clothing in neutral colours.

Strengths and Weaknesses
Skills: If we're talking school stuff, Harper's decent at anything that doesn't involve maths. Outside of that, he's good at swimming, fishing, taking photos, making sandcastles, and identifying certain animals that are found on the island.
Weaknesses: Socialising has always been quite difficult for him. He's not very assertive and tends to sit on the sidelines, often failing at getting involved in major activities. He's very bad at maths, keeping track of time, and being consistent.

Phase One Power: Son of Poseidon (Lv. 1) - Harper's physical endurance and durability are slightly increased.
He can remain underwater for up to 30 minutes, swims much faster, and he develops sonar and electroreceptive and capabilities which allows him to detect living things within a range of 5 meters around him. He can not do this outside of saltwater environments however.

    Phase Two Powers:
Son of Poseidon (Lv. 1) - Harper's physical endurance and durability increases greatly. He no longers suffers fatigue when in water. Outside of it, he is less prone to tiring out quickly. He can hold his breath for up to three hours long and can safely swim slightly past 50 meters underwater. His electroreception is now more refined, allowing him to detect life within a range of 10 meters around him. This ability remains useless outside of saltwater.
Hydromancy (Lv. 1) - Harper becomes able to manipulate liquid to a minimal degree. At this stage, only small quantities of water can be affected at once, and limited to being repelled, attracted, or accumulated into various forms. Using this ability requires much energy and focus, usually result in Harper becoming exhausted afterwards.
Animal Allegiance (Lv. 1) - At first, passively attracts various forms of marine life. They no longer have a fear of him. He is not able to influence their actions at this stage.

    Phase Three Powers:
Son of Poseidon (Lv. 3) - Harper's physical endurance and durability have increased exponentially. He can remain underwater for as long as he pleases, can dive to nearly any depth without suffering from the effects of underwater pressure, is more resistant to blunt trauma and slightly more resistant to penetrating trauma. His electroreceptive ability now allows him to sense living creatures within a range of 50 meters around him, but remains useless outside of saltwater.
Hydromancy (Lv. 3) - Unlike before, Harper is now able to weaponise water. He can now affect larger quantities of the liquid and can quickly propel himself through or across it without the use of extremities.
Animal Allegiance (Lv. 2) - Aquatic creatures can now be actively summoned, and from greater distances. He begins to have an empathetic connection with some of them and can no longer eat seafood.

    Background:
Personality: More often than not, quiet and without expression. Is not very well-versed when it comes to interacting with others. Has a low self-esteem and is pretty sensitive. Harper is very altruistic and polite, which are qualities he is very proud of. When it comes to friends, he can be very selective, but won't single someone out or push them away if he can't get along with them. Overall friendly and accommodating. Listens pretty well, not too much of a talker.

    Backstory:
Harper was 11 when he first set foot on Prefer Isle. But before that, he lived in New York where he was afforded a relatively happy existence with parents who were busy, but always made time to be with him. They gave him whatever he wanted and needed, and guided him accordingly. Unfortunately, it wasn't their fate to do so for long, as while driving back to New York from Philadelphia, they all got involved in a terrible accident from which only Harper survived. He vaguely remembers those moments, having been very disoriented and frightened at the time. Though definitely traumatized afterwards, Harper recovered quickly and constantly inquired as to his parents' location and health. Nobody ever told him the truth, being unable to bear the thought of breaking his heart. Back then, Harper was already a bit suspicious, but he was also hopeful that his parents were okay, and that nothing bad happened to them. Sadly, no news of them ever came to him though he badgered the hospital staff incessantly. Even after he was discharged into his grandparents' care, he heard nothing from his mother and father.

Now living in Prefeton, Harper remained hopeful that he'd see his parents again, mainly because his grandparents kept telling him they were okay and would be around soon. It was too hard for them to find a right way to convey to Harper what exactly had happened, and put it away altogether. This left Harper to mature and eventually understand on his own, impacting him negatively as he felt stupid for ever feeling he would see his parents again after so long, and forlorn of course, as it dawned on him that he was going to be without the two people who had cared for him since birth for the rest of his life.

It seemed that Harper was going down a bad path from then on, but his grandparents noticed and decided to take action on the matter. They paid more attention to his needs and helped him adjust to the new environment and routines. Harper's grandmother even sought out some of the youths she knew to guide Harper along with his recovery. Thanks to their efforts, Harper's emotional state improved greatly. He strived hard to make more friends, involve himself with others, and take risks. And though he failed often, he didn't feel as downtrodden as before and grew more resilient each time. At some point he developed an interest in conservation and joined various groups that protected Prefer Isle's endemic wildlife and environment. He also discovered that he was bi-sexual, with a distinct preference for other males and came out to his grandparents with good results (though they had some reservations about the fact).

Currently, other than school, Harper busies himself with conservation work, personal study on Prefer Isle's ecosystem, photography, and on weekends, helping his grandparents with fishing and selling to various buyers in town. When he's feeling down, he heads to his somewhat secret spot on the coast: An old, overturned boat that is surprisingly quiet on the inside, and teeming with life.

Well, I've shifted level 1 electromagnetic radiation regen to phase 3, and made it a bit more complicated (copying over many of the details from the level 2 version of the regen, whilst healing speed is essentially at level 1, but can recover from more serious stuff given time, and it depends on radiation types absorbed, with a potential temporary regenerative power-boost/synergistic effect beyond normally expected for a level 1 healing power if used in the aftermath of radiation emission, if one ignores short-term negative side effects that would also have to be recovered from, like exhaustion, unconsciousness, symptoms of radiation sickness, etc. Essentially it'd be a healing power with which one could survive more stuff, but it wouldn't be particularly rapid healing, and would be outclassed by level 2 or 3 healing powers in circumstances for which time is of the essence (since even if temporarily boosted, the side effects of continued usage of radiation emission, as well as more serious injuries inflicted by enemies, would render him unable to fight/incapacitated). Just trying to make it so that if it seems potentially more powerful than a typical level 1 healing power, it would be at an appropriate price/drawback.

Not sure if I'm trying to stick too much into a level 1 power or not to in an effort to compensate for not having enough room for a level 2 regen power, though.

Formerly Videssos. Just a femboy-obsessed degenerate. Also interested in history, mythology, fantasy, science fiction, metal and some other stuff.
A little bird told me, "Go, Go! Socialise! Talk to those fine people! And then, KILL EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM! Plunge your knife into their throats when they ain't lookin', and then burn 'em to the ground!"
Well that's silly, isn't it?

Any opinions on my powers?

Phase One Power: 3rd Pursuit Group - Sofie can summon eight members of the 3rd Pursuit Group, a World War Two special operations team. Every operator in the team is named after a letter in the military alphabet, starting from Alpha to Hotel. The operators do not have faces, and instead have smooth blank slates. Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie have special roles. Alpha is the squad gunner, who has a M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle. Bravo is an anti-tank specialist, who has an M1 Bazooka. Charlie is a sniper, who has a Springfield Model 1903. Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, and Hotel, are all rifleman with M1 Garands. The 3rd Pursuit Group is enchanted beyond human capabilities, along with their weapons. They have very high accuracy with their shots, and the stopping power of each bullet is immerse - able to blow through modern body armor or a lightly armored vehicle. Charlie, the sniper, has a longer range than everyone else because of his rifle and job. Every member can run up to 20.72 km/h without stoppage for hours. Reload speed is fast - it’ll take only a few seconds from them to switch empty magazines for a fresh one. Bravo, AT specialist, can cripple a modern armored fighting vehicle, along with modern MBTs, but significantly less.

3rd Pursuit Wing - Sofie can summon two P-51 Mustangs as air-support for the 3rd Pursuit Group. Both P-51 Mustangs are named in accordance to the military alphabet, W-Alpha and W-Bravo. Both units of attack craft have four .303 in (7.7 mm) machine guns and four 80 lbs bombs. The two pilots, like their infantry counterparts, have capabilities beyond that of a normal human. Maneuvers that would normally require the pilot to be highly skilled and fit, are done commonly by W-Alpha and W-Bravo without issue. The aim and vector attack line-up of both W-Alpha and W-Bravo are uncanny in accurate, only limited by the plane’s ability and technology. The .303 British bullets are able to destroy a moderately armored vehicle, and bombs able to destroy a modern MBT.

3rd Mortar Support Team - Sofie can summon a team of twenty-four men to man six 60mm mortars in support of the 3rd Pursuit Group. The mortars and shells are normal, but the men manning them are faster in firing speed due to their enchanted nature. There’s nothing else to say on them. Anything left out in this mortar team, just assume it’s on normal human standards

Even though she's not like that? Allison is rather kind hearted despite being in the popular group.

Maybe. I suppose it depends on whether or not Izumi actually got to know Allison. Allison would have to be the one to approach Izumi though-i can't see a reason why Izumi would approach Allison given her opinion on most other girls.

Of course. Izumi's just not that kind of girl. Allison would most definitely take the charge in making friends.

Character Description
    Name: Mukami Jemiriyah
    Gender: Female
    Age: 17
    Appearance: Image

Strengths and Weaknesses
Skills: Incredibly skilled in pitching baseballs (to the point of being the star pitcher of Prefeton's high school baseball team). Mukami can also sing the song Vivir Mi Vida. And being a baseball player, she's really healthy and fit, and also has a good understanding of velocity, ballistics, and physics overall.
Weaknesses: Her handwriting is atrocious. To get past this, she tries to write really slowly during class but falls behind on notes and often barely passes exams. With these, coupled with general anxiety, Mukami is self conscious and lacks a strong sense of pride or self esteem.

    Phase One Power:

Ballistic Barrage (Level 1): This power is among the more unique ones in the school, but also one that fits Mukami perfectly. Ballistic Barrage allows her to conjure two handballs of similiar appearance and size to the Japanese temari. Once the two temari are summoned, Mukami can throw them at an average high school pitcher's speed (75 mph), and once they're thrown, Mukami can call them back at any time. This means that the handballs act similar to Captain America's shield, which is also her favorite super hero. And due to the way Ballistic Barrage works, Mukami would have Level 1 in both Super Strength and Speed, although she may be a little higher in speed (not quite Level 2 now). The drawbacks to this power is that it takes about a minute to create the fully conjured temari, and after just two sets of throws, her arms get incredibly sore. This would cause confusion for Mukami since she can pitch in regular baseball for far longer without these side effects. Finally, when temari are called back, they maintain the speed they were thrown at. Mukami wouldn't wear any catching gloves, so her bare hands will feel the full effect of a 70+mph ball being thrown. Another side effect of BB is super strength. Mukami is already an athlete and works out constantly, but her strength has increased so that she can make dents in her home wall with her bare fists.

Phase Two Powers: (Between Levels 1 and 2?) The main extension for Ballistic Barrage would be strength and durability. At this point, the temari would now develop in speed at the same rate she can throw baseballs (so no major changes in speed). But when they return to her, she can handle them much better without significant injuries. I think low level telekinesis applies to Ballistic Barrage in this case, both in terms of the ricohet and possibly slowing the temari down a bit.

Phase Three Powers: Fully Level 2 now, Mukami's Ballistic Barrage will now eclipse speeds of 90mph and her strength will be Level 2 as well. For now, I think this is the most I can make of Ballistic Barrage without going into full telekinesis mode.

Background:
Personality: Quiet, self conscious, and generally a shy teenager, Mukami prefers to spend time alone and is more of an introvert. Even when she wins games as a pitcher, she shows no emotion and doesn't boast.
Backstory:

Mukami Jemiriyah is from Ethiopia, and her family moved to the United States when she was around 3 years old. They went to Maine first, and began to settle down in Prefeton, which is the home Mukami always knew and is the only one she remembers. From elementary school, Mukami developed a love for sports and super hero comics. This is when she joined the local baseball team and begged her parents to buy Avengers and Captain America comic books. Due to this, a lot of kids would describe her as more of a nerd and a tomboy. In middle school, she further developed her pitching abilities and became a starter, which she carried into highschool. Throughout this time, her grades were good enough to still play on the team, although she obviously prefers to perform better. She spent hours working hard and studying, resulting in getting Bs in most of her classes for the first time in her academic career.

Besides the normal teenage stuff she deals with, Mukami began to realize something was strange about her. When she was studying and blanked out, she would suddenly see temari handballs near her, with no recollection of how they got there. After playing around with them for a bit, the temari glowed yellow and disappeared. This process began recurring for months, as she began experimenting. One day, she tossed the temari at the wall while she was relaxing, and it ended up causing a great dent while returning to her. This incident not only caused issues with her parents, but also forced Mukami to miss a few weeks of baseball as her hand recovered. Now, just over 2 years later, Mukami named this power Ballistic Barrage. She also uses it to train herself for pitching at school

Kristen is accepted as well. Feel free to tweak all the speeds up by 5%. I think that's fair given the social negatives of having bits of machinery sticking out of you.

I did tweak her speeds up by 5% (thanks. It's almost neglible, but every little bit helps). I also updated Kristen's personality and backstory.

Yeah I'll figure that one out. Are there any places that some of the people in town might hang out? I haven't specified where Bridget works yet.

Character Description
Name: “Legally I’m Cecily Shauna Nevverling-Wijgaants, but my real name is Cecil Leopold Nevverling-Wijgaants. Leo works for short. I use Cecil because my parents find it easier.”
Gender: “Assignment aside, Male. He/him if you’d please.”
    Age: 17
    Appearance:
    Image
Stands at 172cm(5’7”) with a faint LCD outline, like that of an old television

Strengths and Weaknesses
    Skills:
“I would say I’m talented when it comes to learning languages. Natively I speak English, and I’m more or less fluent in Dutch and Afrikaans, though you could say that’s sort of cheating. I’ve been learning French in and out of school for some time now, and over the past year or so I’ve convinced my father to invest in online Japanese lessons for me, but I wouldn’t describe myself as fluent in either. I’m a major history buff, partially kudos to my father, and I’ve also discovered a passion for economics. I’ve taken a few computer courses in my day, and I can figure stuff out given enough time and googling, but I wouldn’t describe myself as a whiz. I’ve tried my hand at writing, and I must say I find it enjoyable enough that I’m currently working on rewriting old song lyrics to give them new, more progressive life. Though I don’t do it much anymore, I’m still quite good at calligraphy and makeup alike. The two hobbies have more in common than one would imagine. My dad’s father taught me to perform basic maintenance on cars, while I learned how to use a rifle from my stepmother’s father.”
    Weaknesses:
“I tried to learn the pipe organ, but I’m absolutely atrocious at music. My teacher commented that he’d never seen anyone struggle so much. It was a nice experience though. I tend to suffer from bad hearing, reaction time, and tunnel vision, which one can imagine makes me bad at team sports. My hands tend to shake sometimes, but I can get them under control. My worst thing still, though, is that I have, like, this motor tic. It’s a twitch or something. I’ll be sitting, and all of a sudden my body will convulse. I tend to shudder when I’m stressed too. My body could do to calm itself, I think.”
    Phase One Power:
Character Model Jailbreak(1): Cecil’s body is no longer firmly bound by certain physical restraints. This manifests in his ability to violate the integrity of his own physical form in a number of ways, albeit with imperfect control. His body may stretch as if it were elastic, although it lacks the structural integrity of someone with a truly elastic body. Likewise, by baseball sliding or tripping into physical obstacles, Cecil may clip through them and glitch out on the other side. Visible glitching occurs in tandem with these activities.
    Phase Two Powers:
Character Model Jailbreak(2): Cecil’s bodily integrity can be more readily violated with greater control. He may clip his entire body through a wall, or simply a part of himself, usually his head, through hard surfaces so long as he tries to hit them with sufficient force and has the desire to clip. His physical modification can be more readily controlled, able to actively control his stretching, as well as effecting minor appearance modifications by holding certain items(Ex: Razor for facial hair, hairbrush for hair, etc).
Commands(1): By saying “T: forward-slash summon”, Cecil can execute the /summon command, enabling him to obtain in his hands any good he is aware of, up to five before exhaustion will overtake him and he needs to rest.
    Phase Three Powers:
Character Model Jailbreak(3): Cecil’s bodily integrity is under his full control, obeying his commands over those of physics. This manifests in his ability to clip/see through walls at will. He may stretch his extremities with similar control to that of a character animated in the rubber hose style, and likewise may effect some appearance modifications through holding certain items.
Commands(3): By saying “T: forward-slash [command]”, Cecil may execute /summon and /give commands. The /summon command may give him objects that he may feasibly have access to, even if he does not own them. The /summon command may bring up to 24 smaller objects, or 3 larger ones, while the /give command may bring up to 16 smaller objects, or two larger ones, before rendering Cecil too tired to further summon.

    Background:
    Personality:
“I fancy myself rather smart, but I don’t like to rub it in. Don’t get me wrong, I like being right, but it’s in the spirit of good faith not to dominate a classroom discussion. I like to make jokes, especially dark ones, and I love a good philosophical game, but I think a casual appreciation of one’s surroundings is not to be underestimated. I used to bite my tongue too often for the sake of politeness, but as I’ve gotten into self-liberation, I think these days I’ve revived a tendency to say whatever wacky nonsense pops into my head. I try to be funny with it, though. I will say I have this capacity for cutting judgement that I still keep in check. My brain will just describe people in brutal ways sometimes, and I have to remind myself that accurate does not always imply socially acceptable. I really prefer to only hurt the feelings of those who have it coming. As far as stress management goes, I’ve come a long way, though as with other things, sometimes I wonder if I’ve overcorrected, as rather than worrying my head off, I find myself rather blasé to pressure. I suppose it’s better than having a fight or flight response to a pop quiz, though. I like to try and be helpful, but I think I still have a negative streak, and, though I try to do myself justice rather than tearing myself down, I’m still sometimes inclined to get despondent and useless.”
Backstory: “I feel like it’s best to begin my story back before I was born, all the way back in a country that no longer exists known as Rhodesia. Well, back in the time I’m talking about, it was called The Colony of South Rhodesia. My mother’s side of the family settled in Salisbury. I know it’s been Harare since before I was born, but it’s a force of habit for me, as I grew up calling it that. If you haven’t already guessed, my maternal line is chock full of aggressive Rhodies. My mother grew up in the family home in Harare with a brother and a sister, her parents, aunts, and grandparents during the post-UDI era. She went off to college at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, and soon was followed by her family with the advent of the Fast-Track Land Reform Programme in 2000. I think they sold the family home, but I don’t know how much money they got, or if it’s even true that they did. They’re very proud of their heritage, which is in large part why I still sound like a Rhodie. Old habits die hard, as they say.

My dad, meanwhile, was born and raised in Port Elizabeth, South Africa with his brother and sister. One side of his family has been there for generations, while the other side, the Nevverlings, originally left India after the Raj dissolved. In any case, I prefer them. They’re pretty socially aware all things considered; indeed, my grandfather personally opposed Apartheid. He holds a certain level of nostalgia when it comes to those things, but at the same time rejects it. He’s an interesting man, to say the least. He’s the history teacher at our high school, actually. Dr. Theodoor Nevverling-Wijgaants.

My parents originally met after my father’s brother and mother’s sister introduced them. My aunt and uncle are actually married, and had introduced their siblings while dating. They settled down in one of the whiter English-speaking neighbourhoods in Grahamstown and had me on October 30th, 2002. I was homeschooled for a lot of my early years. Honestly, I’ll say, those years of my life were quiet. Boring, even. I don’t even remember them that well. Some say it’s trauma, but who am I to say? All I really remember is that they always were ideologically very fussy. Heaven forbid I read Steven Hawking…

My dad worked years away in middle management for the Department of Labour, but never really liked his work. He decided to go back to school after the ‘08, but things went slowly until he managed to get his hands on a two-year grant to wrap up earning his doctorate in History abroad at the University of St. Andrews in Aberdeen. I visited him one summer, and I must say I can tell why he loved it so much. But there was a problem. Back home, my mother started to get nervous, or something to that effect. When I was but 10, she accused my father of cheating with Johanna Wijgaants—the woman who would go on to become my stepmother. So they got a divorce, but my mother couldn’t prove anything, and thus they ended up with de jure joint custody that only really went into effect when my father came back from college when I was 12. In that time, my mother had already remarried to an Afrikaaner man named Samuel. My younger brother and I had to make a lot of adjustments to fit his two sons into our house. They hoped we’d become closer and get to be one happy family, but that was pretty much dead on arrival.

Life with my father around was an adjustment, as we’d been apart for some time, and he still had trouble dealing with stress at first. He tried his best though, and it eventually bore fruit. The opposite occurred with my mother. I get the idea that she always had higher expectations than reality could support, and would get upset when they didn’t live up to that. Something like that, at least. I understand that she had a rough time when my dad was away, but when she remarried, though she fared better on a personal or perhaps spiritual level, she seemed to take a step back from parenting. Sam did most of the parenting from when I was in Grade 7 onward. I never got the impression that he was any good at it, even with his own two kids.

A prime example of this was how privacy was, simply put, of no value to them. They’d always rifle through my electronics and other belongings alike and harangue me about every minor detail as if I was a felon. In their eyes, I suppose I was, as right before my mother remarried, they found I’d been using the internet for purposes that were not, shall we say, approved of. I once had to shower with my grandfather because they believed that I was not shampooing my hair properly, so with all of that in mind, I would say there were certainly major boundary issues that should have been addressed. But they never were.

I suppose that brings us to a pivotal point in my life, where the person you see before you became at all recognisable. I believe I was on a youth retreat at Schoenstatt Retreat and Conference Centre for a girl’s retreat in December of 2015, though it may have been the following year. It’s hard to remember. Until the last year or so, things have been a maelstrom of pain that I’m not keen on revisiting, but I suppose I must, for the sake of an accurate history.

For some time before my weekend at the retreat centre, I’d been overcome with this profound sense of malaise, which indeed was why I’d been sent on the retreat in the first place. I had my iPad with me even though I wasn’t really supposed to, and had been browsing the internet when I happened upon an internet forum that just...awakened something in me. I saw people, real people. And I could relate to them in a way I’d rarely experienced before. The experience was something akin to what I imagine the Downers from the video game We Happy Few experience as they come off their joy. It was as if I’d finally come off of a woozy daydream back into the real world, and saw it as it really was. And that world was shit.

I don’t like framing that moment of time as an epiphany, but I do think it was a spark that set off a powder keg of years of built-up existential angst. Maybe that’s more dramatic, but whatever the case may be, my life has never been the same. I tried a few times to deftly throw off the burdens of my old identity, but everything from attempting to quietly androgynise my name to trying to get my hair cut short was thwarted. I once had long flowing locks of brown hair that went down to my legs, but now, like the weight of the past, I’ve shed them.

The next part of my life that’s important is a fateful night, one on the eve of my brother’s birthday. Some background is necessary first, though. My younger brother is about 3 years my junior, and had become the undoubted favourite on my mom’s side before this tale takes place. I was regarded as the problem child for my isolationist tendencies and lack of enthusiasm for just about anything. The invasion of privacy had teased out vague commentary on my sexuality, and had been making inroads towards deeper issues closer to my core for some time. My mom, and in particular my stepfather, had been getting more aggressive about it over the course of my freshman year.

Then it happened. It was my brother’s birthday dinner with family, a few days before his actual birthday. The Night of Burning Hair, as I call it. We’d driven up near Pretoria, where my stepfather’s parents lived. We went out to eat at the same restaurant we always did, had a toast to my younger brother, and so on. Normal things. All seemed calm for the moment. But then, during the drive home, my stepfather said we’d need to talk about something. I can remember hearing my own heart as him and my mother agreed that there would be no more secrets, and that they were going to set up some new rules. I couldn’t hold out much longer. I knew it for a fact. I would break tonight. I said I needed to go to the bathroom and change before we spoke, and was allowed. I packed a bag with all I held dear, which was luckily quite easy thanks to already having most of my things in a suitcase, went into the bathroom, and turned on the water. I wrote a hasty coming-out note, and left through the window into the night.

My original plan was to find my stepmother’s parents, as they lived in the Pretoria city centre. I tried, but alas I got lost in the unfamiliar cityscape, and ended up trudging through the cold, crisp June night. It must’ve been midnight or perhaps later when I met them. Adriaan, Rynold, and Iggy were their names. I think I owe those three men my life. They were in an alley sitting around one of those metal mobile fire pits, with a little garbage fire going.

At first I thought I was going to die by kidnapping or something when one of them walked up next to me as I sat on a bench and tried to get my bearings. He asked if I was alone. I sighed and placed my face in my hands. He introduced himself as Rynold. Patted me on a back, but in a gentle, caring way. Not pushy or predatory. I later learned around the fire that the trio of men were in a polyamorous relationship, and were down on their luck. They were so kind. Asked nothing of me but that I stayed and warmed myself by the fire, and insisted that I could talk to them. Honestly, thinking about such a pure act of human kindness still brings tears to my eyes. I was able to come out to them, and they immediately switched over, in spite of everything. Then and there, that evening, they offered to cut my hair, and that they did. It was an à la victime hairdo due to the crude knife they used, but for what it lacked in elegance, it more than made up in a euphoric freedom. We used it as kindling to warm our bodies and free my heart. I felt safer out in the cold that night than I had in months, maybe years.

That morning, when I awoke, I dug through my belongings, and gave the trio 500 Rand and a gold ring I’d been given for my 12th birthday. I still feel as if that failed to express how deeply grateful I was and still am for their aid. I set off, and made it to my stepmother’s parents’ house by noon. I think I must’ve fainted after lunch, because it all becomes hard to compute. The struggle felt like it ended, and my spirit gave out. I suppose my war ended, and my father’s began. He’d already been preparing for a custody battle, having seen the state of emotional turmoil it kept me in, not to mention my mother’s frequent breach of the agreement to divorce amicably with her frequent implicit slander in the early days. And so, despite the volatile nature of it all, I ended up thousands of kilometres away from that world in just a matter of months. I switched out of my school over the Christmas holiday, and before I even had time to think, my father, stepmother, and I had moved to America.

I suppose my father always had a plan. I wish my younger brother had come with us, but he opted to stay with my mother when we opened the custodial can of worms. I miss him, but I suppose what’s done is done.

I’ve lived in Prefeton for all of 20 months now, and I must say it’s been an adjustment. When I first arrived, I was still rather shaken from all that’d transpired. I’d already come out to my father and stepmother during the custody proceedings, but it’s only been this summer that my persistence has finally paid off. During my transitory semester, I mostly kept to myself. I think I produced a sort of uncertainty around my gender, or at least, I would have, had it not been for official legal names. I’d gotten in contact with the school administration to get it changed on my student ID and in the yearbook this last year, but it’s a rocky road still. I had to white out my ID last year because my father didn’t want to buy a new one, and that landed me in trouble, but maybe it got the point across. This year, I’m incumbent President of the GSA, and am eager to take up the honourable position in full.

As much as my life has changed over the past few months, the last few weeks have proven revolutionary. I think the next revolution in my life occurred in my bathroom, and I’m still not sure how I feel about that. It was maybe two weeks ago, during my last period, as I recall it. I’d been having a particularly rough day with regards to dysphoria, and had spent the greater part of the evening with my shirt on in the bathroom clutching my insides over the toilet as my IBS flared up alongside the dysphoric stress. When I finally mentally wrested myself off my seat, I did my traditional vertigo-induced stumble to the sink, and stood nude in front of the mirror as I always did to try and convince myself that things would turn out fine once I removed those two curséd weights from myself.

I started to shower, and sat in the tub with the drops of scalding water raining on my scalp and back as I listened to Deliver Us from the Prince of Egypt soundtrack. I closed my eyes and for a moment, just a moment, tried to imagine the bright future I always told myself I’d have. I’d come so far, and yet, in spite of all the change, my deepest needs still went unmet. I remember, I sighed into my hands, and slowly stood up again.

Vertigo hit. My vision blacked out for a second, and then, when I started to regain my physical stability, I felt a twitch come on. My back muscles tightened, and my vision slightly blurred, as was routine, but what was not routine was what came as my vision began to blur. I heard a scraping noise, like a computer error, and I felt myself enter sensory overload. It was a flash of black and then the outside of my shower curtain. I felt a shock wave go through my back as it all transpired in a split second. It disoriented me so badly that I fell in the shower, and though I luckily didn’t black out, I sat there for what felt like an hour in the shower water. The song ended, and I started to regain my bearings. My insides weren’t hurting anymore.

I started to wash my body, and noticed something else had changed about my situation. Something far less easily explained. As I began to rub the oatmeal-honey soap on my chest, I felt a distinct lack of flesh. My chest was flat. No breasts in sight. I dropped the soap bar, rinsed my hands, and rubbed my eyes. I couldn’t believe it. Surely I was dreaming. Or was I hallucinating? I felt my chest again, and patted it down with my hands. Even though I saw it in the mirror with my own two eyes and felt it with my own two hands and on my spine, I didn’t believe it until I woke up the next morning, and looked in the mirror again. I wondered for a moment what possibly could have caused it, until, as I stood before the bathroom mirror brushing my teeth that very morning, and as I began to think about how I could possibly explain the phenomenon to my father, I did it. I glitched in real life.

I think my base appearance has begun to change in other uncontrollable ways as well. Most noticeably is that when I twitch, my body visibly glitches with an accompanying sound. I think I’ve seen parts of my body jerk away from my body while the glitch occurs. I think it once even did that goat simulator modelling error. More importantly, though, in my opinion, is my voice. It sounds like it’s being broadcast through an antique radio, and is also a hint deeper than it used to be. Some sudden movements for me seem to generate static sounds or something. It’s hard to figure out a rhyme or reason to it.”
