Australian Fire/Severe Drought Thread

Postby Shrillland » Fri Jan 03, 2020 6:44 am

After two months and the fires still going on, I was genuinely surprised(and slightly disgusted and ashamed at all of us including myself, I won't lie) to find that NSG still doesn't have a thread to discuss the massive bush fires burning across Australia even as it discussed the smaller ones in the Amazon. This is that discussion thread. Anything from checking on Aussie NSGers to updates on how the fire fight is going to complaints on how Scott Morrison is the ultimate definition of the word "abdication" are welcome here.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019%E2%8 ... ire_season

22 people and as many as half a billion animals have died so far, 28 more are missing in Victoria. So far, NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian has called a second 7-day state of emergency earlier today, but Australian PM Scott Morrison still reufses to do so nationwide despite fires occurring in all states and territories.

Anyway, how has this fire affected any of you guys down in Australia? We all want to know if you're all right.

EDIT: Title's been changed as per Australian RePublic's request to include discussion on the severe drought that's engulfing the continent as much as the flames.

Right, and what should he do to magically put the fires out? Ask them to stop nicely?

Or maybe we should be looking into the 200 or so people arrested for arson surrounding the fires?

With everyone pointing fingers to climate change, which is true what the hell is ScoMo meant to do about it himself? Sure, him leaving to Hawaii for a holiday is questionable, but he can’t cure climate change with a snap of a finger either. Plus, reducing emissions is near pointless for us. Australia produces a little over 1% of global carbon emissions, estimates vary. And they’re already being reduced in a rate which is in my opinion, good enough

The only thing we can do right now is help out those communities and the firefighters financially

Aye, but it certainly looks bad when he's doing speeches telling everyone that there's no need for a state of emergency, for example. Governments can break apart over that sort of thing, just ask the Brits.

It's most definetively needing a state of emergency. All national resources have to be mobilized since this is an apocalyptic catastrophe.

He ran off to Hawaii on vacation while the largest disaster in Australian history is taking place, then lied about being there. At the same time Australia's fire fighters are unpaid and under supplied while he and the ruling Liberal Party had refused for months the idea of compensating the fire fighters. He's a piece of shit.

There’s a state of emergency now in my state of NSW, but only for 7 days

He would have more than likely booked that in advance, considering the PM isn't a job you can just up and walk away from. Although I agree he should have cancelled the holiday, the planning was really just an unfortunate coincidence. But yes, they should be paying those brave firefighters - that's something I think we should all agree on. Not sure either of those things make him a PoS, I think you're just looking for a reason to insult him because he's not of your political persuasion and he has an annoying smirk.

He lied about being in Hawaii, he refused the idea of paying the fire fighters until last week and only under intense pressure from the opposition even though this has been going on for three months, and he is doing as little as possibly when it comes to actually using the powers he can use. He's a piece of shit.

Where did he lie about going to Hawaii by the way, I don’t remember that so if someone could link me to that then that’d be nice. All I remember is that he did indeed apologise for the holiday

But Mr Morrison’s office insists that claims he is holidaying in Hawaii are “wrong” while refusing to disclose his location or for how long he is on leave.

Yes, but he has apologised since then is the point Ark is making, I believe. The rest is just as true, however, and if I were PM, I'd have made sure these volunteers were properly paid from the start, or at least from early December when it became obvious this was no ordinary bush fire season with all the record highs and the lack of rain.

Alright I see, yea that is kinda a dick move but I’m pretty sure he was just trying to protect his own privacy. It was a family holiday for his children as well, he just wanted the family to enjoy themselves too.

Although he really should have cancelled the holiday, I sympathise with his cause but I don’t agree with what he did.

I think if the holiday were scheduled for now he wouldn’t have left. The bushfires are much more horrible now than last month if I recall.

And that's just the worst ones, there are, as I've said, fires burning everywhere except Tasmania so far.

It's very fucking weird that they only mobilised the military to assist a matter of a day or two ago.

I was considering starting a thread but naturally assumed there already was one and I'd just not seen it.

It's a pretty worrying situation - I'm in New Zealand and we're actually seeing haze and in some cases smoke (I was certainly able to smell smoke yesterday) that has blown across the Tasman Sea, so I can only imagine how dire the situation is across the ditch.

And, well seeing as we're on a fairly political website, I might as well venture my opinion that the Australian Prime Minister's response has been... at best eyebrow raising. I don't follow Australian politics or claim to know anything at all about it and I'm quite happy to be corrected if my facts are incorrect but from what I'm observing he comes across as pretty damn inept.
